I'm thinking more and more of taking Vera. Somebody talk me out of it.

I can't. I am taking Vera for .5 unit.Originally Posted by zY|

As per my rule, I only bet the underdogs when I actually think they will win the fight. I know the Jon Jones hype train is off the tracks right now, which is why we can get this price on Vera.
Vera has not looked too sharp since coming down in weight, but in my opinion, his only real legit loss was to Werdum. He beat Randy, IMO. The Jardine fight could have went either way. He broke his hand in the first minute of the Sylvia fight. I don't recall him every really being hurt in a fight.
Vera is basically custom-built to beat Jones. Witness:
Exhibit A:
Jones likes to stand out at kicking range, and leap in with his freakishly long arms to attack. The almost-as-fast Vera is one of the best kickers in the division. Jones is gonna get battered by kicks at range. While he is quick with his punches, Jones hasn't really shown a lot of power. Vera does have power in his kicks and knees. Vera is also more disciplined and technical in his strikes. With all of that backing out and coming back in to attack, this is going to give Vera a lot of chances to land his knees and kicks. I would put thier hands at about even, but Jones has never faced a muy thai striker, and Vera might clinch him up when he comes in, then wail on him when he tries to back out. I think he will win the standup.
Exhibit B:
Jones likes to use his greco skills to hit awesome looking throws. Vera also has a greco background, A D1 wrestler at Old Dominion and Air Force, then working out for the Olympic trials in Greco. He has faced stiffer competition and at a heavier weight. Jones will not be throwing Vera.
Exhibit C:
Vera is very hard to take down. Couture leaned on him for 3 rounds and couldn't really corral him. Even if you get him down, he has show a good guard, and good ability to stand up. He is a Lloyd Irvin Blackbelt in BJJ. He will not be getting ground and pounded. He will not be getting submitted.
All told Jones has to beat Vera at Vera's game. I think Vera will win. This fight is a long way off and I fully admit I have no idea what the odds will do. But if you click the odds above you can see a history, and it has already come down from +215. I am shooting for full disclosure on my bets. When I make the bet, I post it.

Scientist, are you going to update your blog tonight? I like reading your thoughts on fights, and with all of these opening lines coming out tonight I would like some input.
Good read, Scientist. I forget you have a blog.
I agree, Vera is a very solid fighter in all areas, who only seems to fight up to his competition. I don't even consider the Werdum loss to be legit. It was a terrible stoppage, with Vera taking minimal damage and the round was about to end. Dumb.

No way would I ever put money down on Vera unless he was fighting a complete bum,he so inconsistent . I think Jones is going to destroy Vera . Vera got muscled around by Couture what do you think Jones is going to do?
Jones isnt just going to stand there and let Vera strike him which is the only way i think Vera can win

I agree with you, Luke.
Vera is good, but Jones is the future. He's still green and I do think his inexperience may cost him a W, but in terms of pure skill I think he's already surpassed Vera. I jumped on Jones for 2u @ -200.
I heart cock
Jones has passed Vera in terms of pure skill? Crack kills, my friend.

I like Jones also. But im not sure I like the current odds. I think he can take Vera down, but I am worried about Vera picking him apart with kicks. Jones has a big reach too. Jones is my pick, but at -240, not sure yet if I want to pull the trigger.

I think Kongo is a lock. @ -225 that was a steal. I will take him even @ -350. I don't see how he loses this fight, great matchup for him stylistically.
I have bets on Roy Nelson and Florian...
I will be bet on Kongo and Maia (though won't recommend that one).
I will probably also bet on Palhares. I think Linhares hs value.
I will definately bet On Koscheck to beat Daley, and maybe Lil Nog to beat Forrest.
You are right, I need to update. I can't keep up with all these fights.

No way I'd bet on Koscheck at the current line. In fact, I already have .75u on Daley at +260. The chance that he catches Koscheck and sends him to la-la land is a lot better than the line indicates, especially in Kos tries to stand with him which, though stupid, would not be all that suprising.Originally Posted by MMA_scientist

Completely agree. I hate this shit. There should always be something at least every 2 weeks.
