I know several guys that run gyms. MMA gyms don't make money... Judo and bjj gyms make money, but not a lot. Guys that can afford to pay month in and month out usually don't want to fight in a cage. It is a lot of 23 year old guys with shitty jobs. In judo and bjj gyms, your crowd is typically a little older, guys with jobs and guys that just want to stay in shape and learn something new, with a few badasses mixed in.

Even then, a really successful gym is not going to rake in tons of cash. The big MMA gym in my town is shutting down and we are being inundated with spazzes.

Who said tons of cash? I said running a gym could make you 50-60k a year even in a small town. My old kickboxing instructor runs a gym in a town of 30,000 people and has made a good living off it for the past 15 years. He teaches Kung Fu ,Kickboxing ,Sanshou and has a BJJ instructor and also trains some local MMA fighters

If he can make a living doing it there's no excuse why someone as well known as Pulver shouldnt be able to

That's the thing, teaching inidvidual styles, even if they are not very effective, seems to be the way to go. Because you get guys that can pay. You can get kids whose parents can pay. I can't really see Jens teaching kung fu though. My experience with gyms is that you have to be a very succesful mma gym with famous fighters, or you have to cater to the people that can pay with slightly watered down arts, that is all I am saying. I just don't see Jens going the community martial arts route, its not his training. I think being who he is, he is going to attract the MMA crowd, which will inevitably make it hard for him to make money.

Not saying it can't be done, but you have to have a good business plan.
