Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, asked about the challenges presented by a 13-man pitching staff, suggested that the team might reconsider its roster balance after Friday's game if starting pitcher Josh Beckett's right thumb is healthy. That said, Valentine made it sound as if he is not taking such an outcome for granted.
"After today’s game, [the 13-man pitching staff] could be more of a resolvable situation, but I’m still holding my breath making sure Josh is fine," said Valentine.
