Heart Of Dallas Bowl: What Bettors Need to Know
Purdue Boilermakers vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys (-17, 70)
WHEN: 12:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 1, 2013
WHERE: Cotton Bowl Stadium, Dallas, Texas
HEART OF DALLAS BOWL STORYLINES
1. Having survived the coaching carousel with Mike Gundy still at the helm, Oklahoma State will be looking for its third straight bowl win and fifth in the last seven seasons. Purdue was not quite as lucky when it came to the coaching turnover and will be led by interim Patrick Higgins after coach Danny Hope was let go. Former Kent State coach Darrell Hazell will take over the program after the contest.
2. The Cowboys suffered four of their five losses on the road this season but will be playing close enough to home in Dallas that they should be able to get the crowd behind them. Either way, the game will likely turn into a shootout. Oklahoma State was fourth in the nation in scoring (44.7 points) during the regular season while the Boilermakers averaged a shade less than 30 points and blasted Indiana 56-35 in their final game to become bowl eligible.
3. Purdue senior quarterback Robert Marve passed for seven touchdowns and one interception during the three-game winning streak that closed the regular season and will be getting a chance to shred a Cowboys' secondary that allowed 285.7 yards in the regular season. The Boilermakers’ bigger deficiency is against the run, where Oklahoma State running back Joseph Randle could do some damage.
TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPNU.
LINE: Oklahoma State opened as high as -17.5 and was bet down to -16.5 before going back to -17. The total has moved from 69.5 to as high as 70.5.
WEATHER: The forecast in Dallas is calling for cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 40s. Winds are expected to blow NW at 10 mph.
TRENDS:
* Boilermakers are 1-4 ATS in their last five bowl games.
* Cowboys are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
* Over is 7-3 in Boilermakers' last 10 games overall.
* Over is 4-0 in Cowboys' last four non-conference games.
ABOUT PURDUE (6-6, 3-5 Big Ten, 6-6 ATS): Hope compiled a 22-27 record over four seasons but the Boilermakers struggled against quality competition this season and won only three games in the Big Ten - against teams with a combined conference record of 4-20. Fortunately those three games came in the last three weeks of the season, allowing Marve and the offense to build a little momentum heading into bowl season. The defense was better than only Indiana in the Big Ten but Marve, who missed three games and was limited to a total of 17 passes in two others, won his job back in the final month and went for 348 yards and four touchdowns in the final win.
ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (7-5, 5-4 Big 12, 6-5 ATS): The Cowboys were rebuilding after waving goodbye to first-round NFL draft picks Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon, but Gundy and company were able to keep the offense rolling right along. Junior quarterback Clint Chelf wrestled away the starting job over the last month but could not keep up with the deficiencies on defense in losses at Oklahoma 51-48 and Baylor 41-34 to close the season. While the quarterback position has been the subject of some debate, Randle’s place in secure. The junior rushed for four scores in the loss to Oklahoma and finished the regular season with 1,351 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Nebraska vs Georgia (-10)
5* Georgia (-10)
It’s hard to believe that teams could be less than excited about playing a January 1st Bowl game. But with the expanded 35 game slate, that is exactly the position in which each of these teams finds themselves. The Cornhuskers had dreams of the Rose Bowl in just their second season of Big Ten play. Those were quickly doused in a 70-31 loss to Wisconsin. In that game, they allowed the Badgers to rush for 539 yards. It was a continuation of their failure against quality offenses on the road. Nebraska lost 36-30 at UCLA, allowing 344 RY and 63-38 at OSU allowing 371 RY. As a result, they are playing at the same site as last year, where they lost 30-13 to S. Carolina. Unless there have been dramatic changes in the last 31 days, the Huskers could well take the worst of it at the line of scrimmage once again. Georgia is playing old school football under HC Richt. Though the Bulldogs have the ability to stretch the field with QB Murray, a veteran signal caller, it was the Georgia ground game that provided balance and allowed them to stay in the game against a top-ranked Alabama defense in their 32-28 SEC Championship game loss. If Murray has his head on straight after the nightmarish final play of that Championship game, Georgia could put up some big offensive numbers. And though NE is a potent offensive force, 35/462, behind QB Martinez and RB Burkhead, they will be greatly challenged by an SEC type Georgia defense that played its best ball down the stretch in the regular season, allowing 14 or less points to its last five opponents. Fundamentals speak loudly to SEC rep Georgia providing there is no worse than equal motivation come kickoff time.

No major knock against respected Stanford. But the 8-5 Badgers are one of the toughest teams in the nation to beat by any significant margin. Wisconsin’s losses this season have been by the margins of 3, 3, 3, 7 (in OT), and 3 (in OT). Last year’s three losses were by 6, 4, and 7 points. You get the idea. Moreover, Stanford is lowvariance, power-oriented team seeking to keep RS frosh QB Kevin Hogan out of dangerous situations. The underrated UW defense allowed more than 21 points only three times in 13 games, one of those a 70-31 Badger victory. Barry Alvarez’ one-game return to the sidelines might be just enough to get hard-hitting Wiscy over the hump.

Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Florida State Seminoles (-13, 58.5)
WHEN: 8:30 PM ET, Tuesday, January 1, 2013
WHERE: Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
DISCOVER ORANGE BOWL GAME STORYLINES
1. Northern Illinois gets a chance to prove the pundits wrong when the 16th-ranked Huskies face No. 12 Florida State, which earned its ticket to the Orange Bowl by holding off Georgia Tech 21-15 in the ACC championship game. The BCS-busting Huskies are riding a 12-game winning streak, highlighted by their 44-37 double-overtime victory over Kent State in the MAC title game.
2. Florida State ranks second in the country in total defense while holding opponents to less than 10 points five times this season. They’ll be tested by a Northern Illinois squad that ranks ninth in scoring offense and rushing offense. The teams are meeting for the first time, and it’s also the first bowl meeting between the ACC and MAC.
3. Northern Illinois’ Rod Carey will make his head coaching debut after replacing Dave Doeren, who accepted the top job at North Carolina State after the MAC title game. The 41-year old Carey previously served as the Huskies offensive coordinator. Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, defensive ends coach D.J. Eliot and special teams coordinator Eddie Gran are all leaving for other jobs, and it’s unclear whether they’ll be staying with the Seminoles for the Orange Bowl.
TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.
LINE: Florida State opened as a 14-point favorite and has been bet down to -13. The total opened at 58 and has climbed to 58.5.
WEATHER: The forecast in Miami is calling for partialy cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 70s. Winds are expected to blow SSE at 6 mph.
TRENDS:
* Huskies are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
* Seminoles are 7-0-1 ATS in their last eight bowl games.
* Under is 4-1 in Huskies last five bowl games.
* Under is 8-1 in Seminoles last nine non-conference games.
ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (11-2, 7-1 ACC, 3-9 ATS): Quarterback EJ Manuel threw for 3,101 yards and running back James Wilder, Jr. scored two touchdowns in the ACC title game, but the Seminoles are defined by their defense. They’ve given up only 22 touchdowns while allowing 15.1 points per game. Florida State, which is 3-5 all-time in the Orange Bowl, ranked third in the country in pass defense (160.8 yards) and fourth in rushing defense (93 yards). The impressive secondary is led by Xavier Rhodes, Lamarcus Joyner and Ronald Darby, who was named the ACC’s top defensive freshman. Bjoern Werner, a 6-4, 255-pound defensive end, was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year after recording 13 sacks.
ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS (12-1, 8-0 MAC, 9-2-2 ATS): The Huskies’ only loss came in their season opener when Iowa escaped with an 18-17 victory. Quarterback Jordan Lynch is a dual threat who leads the nation in total yards (4,733) and ranks third in total yards per game (364.08). In his last nine games, he owns a touchdown to interception ratio of 17-to-2, and he rushed for at least 100 yards in 12 games this season. Junior Akeem Daniels became a key part of the offense in the last two games, when he had 29 carries for 240 yards and five touchdowns. Alan Baxter collected a team-high 11 sacks for the Huskies’ defense, which held opponents to 19 points per game

Obviously I disagree with the move for a variety of reasons. First of all, Mississippi State is much better than its record, with its losses coming at Mississippi (6-6), 41-24, at LSU (10-3), 37-17, at home to Texas A&M (10-2), 38-13, and at Alabama (12-1), 38-7. This is not to denigrate Northwestern but it is of major concern the Wildcats are 0-9 in their past nine bowl games and have not won one since they beat California in the 1949 Rose Bowl. In most of those losses, Northwestern just found ways to lose, as it did this season. The Wildcats are prone to running out of gas and blew double-digit second-half leads this year and lost to Penn State, Nebraska and Michigan. It also must be noted Mississippi State has won five straight bowl games, the longest streak in the country.
Partly cloudy. Winds blowing from the Southwest at 5-15 m.p.h. (Everbank Field, Jacksonville, FL) Game-time temperature: Around 65.

Outback Bowl Played at Raymond James Stadium (65,890), Grass, in Tampa, Florida College Bowl Game Of The Year 200 Units South Carolina (10-2) -5 over Michigan (8-4) Prediction: South Carolina by 13-14 Starting Time: 1:05 TV: ESPN Comments: There is no question in my mind this game will be all about defense. Michigan allows just 311.7 yards (ranked 10th of 120 teams) and 18.75 points (16th) per game. South Carolina gives up 312.25 yards (12th) and 17.42 points (12th) per game. Of equal importance to these dominating defensive numbers is the matchup of South Carolina’s defensive front vs. Michigan’s offensive line, and therein lays the factor that will win this one for the Gamecocks. There is no better defensive front in the country than that of South Carolina. It is led by the country’s best down lineman, sophomore defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who is ranked second in the nation in sacks (13) and tackles for loss (21.5), and he is just the beginning. Eight Gamecocks players have at least two sacks this season and 11 have two or more tackles for losses. To say the defensive front is outstanding is an under-statement. It is about as good as it gets and it will be facing a Michigan offensive line that is not as talented, athletic or quick and has been quite inconsistent all season. Now, factor into the equation the Wolverines very predictable vanilla offense and everything points to a long afternoon for Michigan. Few defenses are as fast to the ball as that of South Carolina. You can look for South Carolina to come with the same ball-control plan it used in its last game of the season, a 27-17 win at Clemson. In that one, the Gamecocks held the ball for almost 40 of the 60 minutes of playing time and that included all but six minutes and 31 seconds of the second half. For the record, USC had 4.5 sacks in that one. Connor Shaw, who missed the Clemson game with a foot injury that has haunted him all season, will again start at quarterback. If he has problems and can’t go the distance, it is of note his backup, Dylan Thompson completed 23-of-41 passes and three touchdowns against Clemson. As I said, everything points to a long afternoon for Michigan.

Capital One Bowl Played at Citrus Bowl Stadium (70,229), Artificial Turf, in Orlando, Florida 10 Units Georgia (11-2) -8 ½ over Nebraska (10-3) Prediction: Georgia by 14-17 Starting Time: 1:05 TV: ABC Comments: Georgia came within 5 yards of possibly playing for the national championship but ran out of time and lost the SEC title game to 2nd-ranked Alabama, 32-28, with the game ending with the former on the Crimson Tide 5-yard line. Other than that, the only team to beat Georgia this season was 6th-ranked South Carolina, 35-7, in Columbia. Nebraska, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde team, closed out its season with a 70-31 loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game and, in the process blew a chance to play in the Rose Bowl, had its choice of several bowl games but chose to meet Georgia in this one. Coach Bo Pelini said he wanted the Cornhuskers to have the opportunity to redeem themselves against the best. They will have that opportunity today but they face a tremendous challenge against a Georgia team that has an explosive offense (it set a school record for points scored in a single season with 484) and a lock-down defense that gave up an average of just 18.8 points per game. Nebraska played one team with the collective ability of Georgia this season—Ohio State (12-0)—and lost 63-38 as a 3-point underdog. Georgia comes into this game with almost every edge, especially at all the skill positions and has the ability to control the pace of the game and dominate the Cornhuskers. As talented as Nebraska is at quarterback and running back, they are trumped by Georgia signal-caller Aaron Murray, a junior who has thrown for 3,466 yards and 31 touchdowns, with just eight interceptions this season, and the freshman duo of Todd Gurley (1,260 yards) and Keith Marshall (723) at running back. It is honorable Nebraska wanted to meet Georgia but it appears to be a decision it will regret.

Rose Bowl Played at Rose Bowl (91,136), Grass, in Pasadena, California 10 Units Wisconsin (8-5) +5 ½ over Stanford (11-2) Prediction: Wisconsin by 3-4 Starting Time: 5:05 TV: Comments: Wisconsin must be respected for beating Nebraska, 70-31, in the Big Ten championship game to get to the Rose Bowl while at the same time acknowledging the Badgers were the third best team in their division of the Big Ten and played for the title only because Ohio State (12-0) and Penn State (8-4) were ineligible for the post season. But, with that said, Wisconsin could easily be undefeated this season. Four of the five games it lost were by 3 points and the fifth by a touchdown. A break here or there and it’s 13-0. In analyzing the talent of both schools, there is not much that separates them and in the end the game handicaps as a dead-even affair. This means taking the points is a must and I do think Wisconsin will pull off the upset.
