Cowboy vs Alvares rumored for september.

    FOTN potential for real

A loaded UFC 178 lineup could get even more interesting, as a bout between streaking lightweight Donald Cerrone and Bellator MMA 155-pound kingpin Eddie Alvarez has been targeted for the Sept. 27 event.

Sources close to the bout who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matchup had not yet been finalized confirmed the news to Sherdog.com. The bout is contingent on the UFC acquiring Alvarez’s services from Bellator. Negotiations are ongoing because Alvarez currently remains under Bellator contract at the time of this writing.

UFC 178 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sept. 27 and is headlined by a light heavyweight title clash between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. The card also includes a key featherweight tilt pitting Conor McGregor against Dustin Poirier.

Alvarez has spent the last four years competing for Bellator MMA. He captured the promotion’s lightweight title for a second time in his most recent outing with a split-decision triumph over Michael Chandler at Bellator 106 this past November. The 30-year-old Blackzilians representative had major contract issues with Bellator last year, as the two parties went to court to settle a dispute that began when Alvarez’s deal expired in October 2012.

After approximately eight months, Alvarez reached a settlement and signed a new deal with the promotion, which cleared the way for his rematch with Chandler last year. The Philadelphia native was to have met Chandler for a third time at Bellator’s inaugural pay-per-view event in May but had to withdraw after suffering a concussion in training.

Cerrone, meanwhile, is one of the hottest fighters in the lightweight division. The Jackson-Wink MMA standout has won four straight fights since December 2013, posting finishes against Evan Dunham, Adriano Martins, Edson Barboza and Jim Miller.

IDK. Cerrone always loses to top 5 guys and I think Eddie is one of them. Of course, he's been in Bellator with shitty competition, so you never know how good he actually is

    looks like its set now:

Just a few hours after his previous employer announced his unconditional release, Eddie Alvarez already has a new gig lined up -- and it might sound just a little bit familiar.

The UFC announced on Tuesday that Alvarez will square off with Donald Cerrone in the UFC 178 co-main event on Sept. 27. Sherdog.com first reported on July 30 that Cerrone-Alvarez was in the works for that card. However, last week the promotion announced that Cerrone would face Bobby Green, not Alvarez, at UFC 178.

With Alvarez officially given his release from Bellator, the rumored bout became a reality. Green, meanwhile, is expected to receive a fight on an upcoming November card, according to the UFC.

Alvarez compiled a 9-1 record during his four years with Bellator.

Cerrone, meanwhile, has posted four consecutive finishes inside the Octagon. Most recently, he dispatched Jim Miller with a second-round head kick at UFC Fight Night on July 16 in Atlantic City, N.J.

UFC 178 takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a flyweight title tilt between Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso. The card also includes a featherweight showdown between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier as well as a middleweight matchup pitting Tim Kennedy against Yoel Romero.

One of those fights I would never feel comfortable betting on. Alvarez is a huge x-factor on account of the fact that we still aren't sure just how well Bellator guys will do in the ufc. Also, with his history of getting dropped in every fight and his concussion issues, it's just a matter of time before he's over the hill. Is this the fight where it happens? Even if he isn't over the hill, did he just look good beating on subpar competition in Bellator? A lot of that would make you think betting on Donald would be a good idea, but then at the same time maybe Bellator's competition was legit, and maybe this isn't the fight where he ends up getting his clock cleaned.

So yeah, I'm not touching this one.

Throw in the fact that Cerrones guard is very good and Alvarez could very well end up taking him down to avoid having to kickbox with him.

Im thinking that time is now. Cerrone is a good finisher. If/when he drops alvarez, I think cowboy will finish him quickly after.

    BTW, welcome to the forum!
