    Preview: Ole Miss at California
    Gracenote
    Sep 13, 2017

The scoreboard operator figures to be busy Saturday as California faces visiting Ole Miss in a matchup of two explosive offensive units. Cal has averaged 34 points in victories over North Carolina and Weber State while Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson has thrown for 918 yards and nine touchdowns in wins over South Alabama and UT-Martin.

Patterson was 32-of-43 passing for five touchdowns and a single-game school record of 489 yards in last Saturday’s 45-23 win over UT-Martin as the Rebels scored on five consecutive drives between the second and third quarters. Patterson could be in line for another big game against Cal, which defeated Weber State 33-20 but allowed Wildcats quarterback Stefan Cantwell to throw for 431 yards. The Bears played without three injured regulars on defense and also lost senior tailback Tre Watson for the season with an unspecified leg injury in the second quarter. Watson entered the season as the Bears’ active leader in career total yards and will be replaced by former walk-on Patrick Laird, who caught a 54-yard touchdown pass in the season-opening win over North Carolina and ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns against Weber State.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Ole Miss -3.5

ABOUT OLE MISS (2-0): After UT-Martin rushed for 219 yards and averaged five yards per attempt, the Rebels are focusing on stopping Laird and the Cal running attack this week. Linebacker DeMarquis Gates had a team-high nine tackles against UT-Martin while fellow linebacker Detric Bing-Dukes made a case for increased playing time with five tackles off the bench. The Rebels have the weapons to keep pace with Cal, led by Patterson and receivers DaMarkus Lodge, D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown, an emerging star who has 16 catches for 389 yards and two TDs.

ABOUT CAL (2-0): Quarterback Ross Bowers threw four scoring passes in his first career start at North Carolina but was a quiet 20-for-28 for 200 yards and no TDs last week against Weber State. Bowers has a plethora of solid options in the receiving game, including junior Vic Wharton III, who has 10 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown. The defense has enjoyed mixed results early this season, but senior linebackers Raymond Davison III and Devante Downs have impressed with a combined total of 35 tackles and four forced fumbles.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Cal owns a 4-10 all-time record against SEC schools, with the last matchup coming in 2007 against Tennessee.

    2. Ole Miss is 115-39-6 all-time against non-conference foes in the month of September.

    3. The Bears are tied for third in the nation in turnovers gained with six.

PREDICTION: Ole Miss 41, Cal 35

Preview: Stanford at San Diego State
    Gracenote
    Sep 13, 2017

All eyes will be on the running game Saturday as San Diego State hosts No. 19 Stanford in a matchup of two of the top backs in the country. San Diego State junior Rashaad Penny had 353 all-purpose yards in last Saturday’s 30-20 win over Arizona State, while Stanford junior Bryce Love has averaged 11.3 yards per carry in games against Rice and USC.

After cruising to a 62-7 win over Rice in Australia, Stanford struggled to pressure USC quarterback Sam Darnold and allowed 623 total yards in last Saturday’s 42-24 loss to the Trojans. Cardinal quarterback Keller Chryst relied on the short passing game and finished 15-of-28 for 172 yards with two touchdowns against USC, while Love gained 141 of his 160 yards in the first half, including a 75-yard touchdown run. The Cardinal struggled to contain USC running backs Ronald Jones and Stephen Carr and face another tough assignment against Penny, who is averaging 206.5 rushing yards per game and leads the nation in all-purpose yards at 284 per contest. “You’re seeing what we knew all along, that he’s one of the best running backs in the country,” Aztecs coach Rocky Long told reporters.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: Stanford -9.5

ABOUT STANFORD (1-1): Chryst has targeted his tight ends early and often during the first two games, with freshman Colby Parkinson and preseason All-Pac-12 selection Dalton Schultz combining for seven catches and three touchdowns. Love figures to receive another heavy workload against the Aztecs, but Chryst also has a pair of solid wide receivers in J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Connor Wedington, who has a team-high nine catches for 111 yards. The defensive line struggled against USC’s size last week and will be looking to bounce back behind senior tackle Harrison Phillips, who leads the team with 16 tackles.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (2-0): The Aztecs are aiming for back-to-back wins over Pac-12 opponents after ending Arizona State's 17-game non-conference home winning streak Saturday. Defensive end Noble Hall was named Mountain West defensive player of the week after recording five solo tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and two forced fumbles, while safety Trey Lomax leads the team with 11 tackles. The offense revolves around the 5-11, 220-pound Penny, who had a career-high 216 rushing yards against Arizona State and scored three touchdowns on a 95-yard rush, 99-yard kickoff return and 33-yard pass reception.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. The teams are meeting for the first time since Sept. 17, 1988, when the Cardinal rolled to a 31-10 victory at Stanford Stadium.

    2. The Aztecs are 20-3 in their last 23 home games dating back to Nov. 2, 2013.

    3. Stanford has won the time-of-possession battle in 28 of its past 35 games.

PREDICTION: Stanford 31, San Diego State 27

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (95-52) at Washington Nationals (89-58)
    DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 16 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

    Preview: Dodgers at Nationals
    Gracenote
    Sep 16, 2017

Prior to the start of a three-game weekend set against the Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters it was more important for his team to play good baseball than it was to make a statement against the team chasing it for the best record in the National League. The Dodgers ended up doing both in the opener, and hope for more of the same Saturday when they continue their series in Washington against the Nationals.

Justin Turner, Yasiel Puig and Corey Seager all homered in the first two innings to back a dominant pitching performance from Alex Wood in Friday's 7-0 victory, sending Los Angeles to its third straight win after dropping 16 of 17 from Aug. 26-Sept. 11. The Dodgers (95-52) also lowered their magic number to clinch the NL West to six games pending the result of a late encounter between Arizona and San Francisco, and opened up a six-game lead over Washington (89-58) for the best record in the NL. The Nationals mustered only four hits against Wood and two relievers while falling to defeat for the third time in four outings. The offense has been lacking for the NL East champions over that stretch, totaling seven runs while getting shut out twice.

    TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, Fox

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Rich Hill (9-8, 3.67 ERA) vs. Nationals RH A.J. Cole (2-4, 4.30)

Hill was saddled with his fourth loss in as many starts Sunday against Colorado, giving up at least one homer for the eighth consecutive outing among the two runs he allowed over five innings. Since barely missing out on a perfect game in Pittsburgh on Aug. 23, the 37-year-old has posted a 6.14 ERA over his next three turns. Ryan Zimmerman is 6-for-9 with two home runs against Hill, who last faced Washington twice in the 2016 NL Divisional Series and permitted five runs across seven innings over two starts.

Cole will be making his first start for the Nationals since getting the win at Miami on Sept. 4, having pitched twice in relief over that span. The 25-year-old rookie worked two scoreless frames against Philadelphia last Saturday but was roughed up for three runs on five hits across two innings versus Atlanta on Tuesday. Cole is limiting right-handed hitters to a .229 average (.301 against left-handers) as he enters his first career start against the Dodgers.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. With one more victory, the Dodgers will post their most wins in a season since going 98-64 in 1977.

    2. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy fanned three times against Wood on Friday, marking the first time since May 20, 2014 - a span of 504 games - he struck out three times in a contest.

    3. Los Angeles OF Andre Ethier went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the opener and remains one homer shy of tying Shawn Green (162) for eighth place on the Dodgers all-time list.

The Houston Astros are on the verge of clinching the American League West when they host the Seattle Mariners on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Houston posted a 5-2 victory in Friday's opener and arrives to the ballpark with a magic number of two for clinching its first division title since 2001.

The Astros are a scintillating 12-5 against Seattle this season, and ace Dallas Keuchel will look to stymie the Mariners for the third time this season. All-Star Carlos Correa went 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double on Friday but has no homers and two RBIs in 48 at-bats this month. The defeat was a painful one for the Mariners, who sit 3 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the AL's second wild-card spot with just 14 games remaining. Kyle Seager was hitless in four at-bats on Friday, ending an 11-game hitting streak during which he belted six homers.

    TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Erasmo Ramirez (5-5, 4.25 ERA) vs. Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (12-4, 3.03)

Ramirez is winless in his last four outings, including a no-decision against the Astros on Sept. 4 in which he gave up two runs and four hits over six innings. The 27-year-old is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA over his last six starts, allowing fewer than three runs five times during the stretch. Ramirez is 3-1 with a 3.31 ERA in eight career appearances (five starts) against Houston and easily has handled Josh Reddick (2-for-19) and Carlos Beltran (1-for-10).

Keuchel has won just one of his last three starts, and the victory came when matched against Ramirez 12 days ago as he allowed two runs and seven hits over 7 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old is limiting opposing batters to a .182 average in nine home starts while going 5-2 with a 2.26 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. Keuchel is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two starts against the Mariners this year and 7-5 with a 2.78 ERA in 14 career appearances (13 starts) as he struggles with Nelson Cruz (10-for-27, three homers).

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Astros 2B Jose Altuve is batting just .261 in 46 at-bats this month, allowing his major league-best average to drop to .347.

    2. Seattle 2B Robinson Cano is mired in an 11-game home-run drought despite batting .333 during the stretch.

    3. Houston RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (arm fatigue) is slated to throw a bullpen session on Saturday and could rejoin the rotation next week.

The surging New York Yankees can clinch a fifth straight series victory when they host the Baltimore Orioles in the third of a four-game series Saturday afternoon. Didi Gregorius homered and drove in four runs in the Yankees' 8-2 rout of the sinking Orioles on Friday, which came on the heels of New York's 13-5 cakewalk in the series opener.

The Yankees are averaging 6.9 runs during a 10-3 burst that has kept them within striking distance in the American League East and solidly atop the heap in the AL wild-card race. Aaron Judge was held hitless Friday but drew a pair of walks and scored twice, giving him 29 runs in 17 games against Baltimore this year. Chase Headley had three hits and an RBI for New York and is hitting .365 during a season-high 13-game hitting streak. The Orioles have lost eight of their last nine to fall 5 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot with 14 to play.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Jeremy Hellickson (8-9, 5.23 ERA) vs. Yankees LH Jordan Montgomery (7-7, 4.24)

Hellickson lasted just 2 1/3 innings against the Yankees at home two turns ago, giving up three earned runs and two hits with four walks. He rebounded to post a quality start at Cleveland on Sunday but still lost to fall to 2-4 since joining the Orioles at the trade deadline. The 30-year-old is 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA in 10 career games (eight starts) against New York.

Montgomery has failed to get through five innings in three consecutive starts, during which he has posted a 6.75 ERA. Included in the rocky stretch was a 4 2/3-inning outing at Camden Yards on Sept. 4, when the South Carolina native let up a pair of earned runs. Montgomery has a 3.43 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 21 innings over four starts versus Baltimore this year.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Yankees were fined an undisclosed amount for improper use of a dugout phone prior to this season as part of MLB's investigation into recent accusations of sign stealing made by both Boston and New York.

    2. Baltimore has been held to two or fewer runs seven times during its 1-8 slide.

    3. New York manager Joe Girardi on Friday became the sixth skipper in franchise history to win 900 games.

The first-place Chicago Cubs are off to a good start in distancing themselves from one of the two teams nipping at their heels as they host the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon in the middle contest of a three-game series. Chicago overcame a slow start before riding a seven-run sixth inning to an 8-2 victory Friday, increasing their lead in the National League Central over St. Louis to four games.

Also pursuing the Cubs are the Milwaukee Brewers, who remained three back after defeating the Marlins 10-2 in Miami on Friday. The Cardinals, who have six games remaining with Chicago - including four in St. Louis from Sept. 25-28, are 3 1/2 behind Colorado for the second NL wild card spot after the Rockies defeated San Diego 6-1 on Friday. The Cubs' Kris Bryant delivered his second three-hit game in his last three contests Thursday with a solo home run and an RBI single, making him 8-for-16 with nine runs scored and eight RBIs in his last four games. The Cardinals' Michael Wacha has won his last three starts and opposes Kyle Hendricks, who had a six-game unbeaten streak (2-0) halted in his last outing.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), CSN Chicago Plus

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (12-7, 3.99 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (6-5, 3.35)

Wacha allowed five hits and struck out seven in eight innings of a 7-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday. The 26-year-old Iowa native has allowed five runs (four earned) over 20 innings during his winning streak, which also represents the first time he's pitched six or more innings in three straight starts since July. Anthony Rizzo is 15-for-34 with three home runs and Bryant 8-for-22 with a homer and seven strikeouts versus Wacha, who is 4-5 with a 6.45 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) versus Chicago - 0-1, 9.58 in two turns this season.

Hendricks allowed three runs, four hits and two walks while striking out seven in six innings of a 3-1 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday. The 27-year-old Californian is 2-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break. Hendricks is 1-2 with a 4.02 ERA in eight starts versus St. Louis, including a no-decision this season when he allowed four runs in four innings opposing Wacha on June 4 in the Cubs' 7-6 victory.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Cardinals CF Dexter Fowler missed his fifth straight game Friday after injuring his knee crashing into the wall trying to make a catch last Saturday.

    2. Chicago soon could be without C Willson Conteras, who was ejected Friday. He threw his mask to the ground in disgust and it bounced off the ground, inadvertently hitting home plate umpire Jordan Baker in the leg - a result that could lead to a suspension.

    3. St. Louis 2B Kolten Wong left Friday's game with lower back tightness.

The Cincinnati Reds might be a little short on wins as they sit in the basement of the National League Central, but their lineup is long on power. The Reds will try to use the long ball to draw one game closer to getting out of the basement when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

Cincinnati (64-84) pounded out four solo home runs in a 4-2 win in Friday's series opener, which pulled it within four games of the Pirates (68-80) for fourth place in the Central. The Reds, who got a pair of home runs from Zack Cozart and one each from Joey Votto and Scott Schebler, are up to 204 home runs on the season - led by Votto's 35. The Pirates were postseason contenders a month ago but are in a deep fade as the season winds down and dropped three straight and eight of their last nine. Pittsburgh, which failed to score more than three runs in any of those last eight losses, will try to generate some offense against Reds rookie Sal Romano and support right-hander Ivan Nova on Saturday.

    TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ivan Nova (11-13, 4.25 ERA) vs. Reds RH Sal Romano (4-6, 4.54)

Nova is struggling through the second half and is 2-7 with a 6.62 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break. The Dominican Republic native was ripped for five runs in as many innings in a loss at St. Louis on Sunday - the sixth time in the last nine starts that he yielded at least four earned runs. Nova was knocked around for seven runs - five earned - on eight hits and three walks over five innings in a loss at Cincinnati on Aug. 25.

Romano allowed eight hits in five innings at the New York Mets on Sunday but limited the damage to two runs while striking out six in a no-decision. The 23-year-old rookie surrendered three or fewer runs in each of his last five outings, with the lone loss in that span coming at Pittsburgh on Sep. 3. Two of Romano’s losses have come at Pittsburgh, with the Pirates knocking him around for a total of six runs - five earned - in 11 2/3 innings.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Votto needs three home runs to surpass his career high of 37 set in 2010.

    2. Pittsburgh 3B David Freese recorded 14 strikeouts in his last seven games.

    3. Cincinnati closer Raisel Iglesias worked multiple innings in each of his last three appearances, totaling 5 2/3 frames.

The Cleveland Indians must begin another winning streak Saturday, one day after their American League-record run came to a close, as they host the Kansas City Royals in the third of a four-game set. The Indians saw their 22-game streak end Friday night with a 4-3 setback, losing for the first time since Aug. 23 and falling four short of the major-league mark set by the 1916 New York Giants.

Cleveland has already secured a playoff spot and its magic number to clinch the AL Central is two, but there is still plenty of work to be done as it holds a 1 1/2-game lead over Houston for the best record in the AL. Francisco Lindor will try to extend his hitting streak to 10 games for the Indians, who send Carlos Carrasco to the mound against Kansas City right-hander Jason Hammel. The Royals won for just the second time in five contests Friday to pull within four games of Minnesota for the second wild-card spot in the AL, but All-Star catcher Salvador Perez is day-to-day with an intercostal injury. Former Indian Brandon Moss is 9-for-21 during a six-game hitting streak for the Royals, while teammate Alcides Escobar is 7-for-15 over the last four contests.

    TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Jason Hammel (8-11, 4.91 ERA) vs. Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (15-6, 3.41)

Hammel gave up five runs and 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings to lose Monday versus the Chicago White Sox after winning three of his previous four outings. The 35-year-old pitched 5 1/3 perfect innings in his last meeting with the Indians before allowing four runs and six hits in the next 1 1/3 frames to take his first loss against them in 2017. Edwin Encarnacion is 9-for-30 with five homers against Hammel, who is 3-1 with a 3.91 ERA versus Cleveland this year.

Carrasco, who is 5-1 in his last seven starts with 59 strikeouts and five walks, has permitted one or zero runs in six of those outings. The 30-year-old Venezuelan limited Detroit to seven hits over six scoreless innings Monday and spun seven scoreless frames in a victory over Kansas City on Aug. 27. Melky Cabrera is 11-for-36 with a pair of homers versus Carrasco, who is 8-6 with a 3.46 ERA in 21 career meetings with the Royals (16 starts).

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Kansas City 1B Eric Hosmer is 21-for-57 with seven RBIs against the Indians this year, although the Royals have dropped 10 of 17 in the season series.

    2. Cleveland 2B/3B Jose Ramirez is 9-for-16 with a pair of homers and five RBIs over his last five contests.

    3. The Royals have the least errors in the AL with 68 and the Indians are just behind them with 69 after committing one Friday.

The Boston Red Sox needed 15 innings to dispatch the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, but the effort was important to their position atop the American League East. The Red Sox will try to clinch a series win when they visit the Rays for the middle contest of their three-game set on Saturday.

Dustin Pedroia stranded 10 baserunners while going hitless in his first seven at-bats before coming up with two on in the 15th and sending a grounder to the right side that Rays second baseman Brad Miller could not field cleanly, pushing across the go-ahead run on the error and opening up the floodgates. The 13-6 win left the Red Sox three games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East and improved the team to 7-3 during a stretch of 21 straight contests against teams with losing records. Tampa Bay's boom-or-bust offensive attack broke out the boom with two home runs off Boston ace Chris Sale and a total of four in the contest, including a solo shot by Kevin Kiermaier in the 14th inning that kept the game going after Boston had taken a lead. The Rays will take aim at a pitcher that has been susceptible to the long ball on Saturday in Boston's Rick Porcello, who opposes Alex Cobb.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (9-17, 4.64 ERA) vs. Rays RH Alex Cobb (11-9, 3.59)

Porcello needed 95 pitches to get through five innings against the Rays on Sunday and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while suffering his 17th defeat - 13 more than last season. The New Jersey native did manage to get through that start without surrendering a home run but remains tied for the major-league lead with 35 blasts allowed. Porcello served up a pair of solo shots at Tampa Bay on Aug. 9 but limited the damage to those two runs over six innings to record a win.

Cobb threw 93 pitches to get through five frames at Fenway Park on Sunday but outdueled Porcello by yielding one run and four hits en route to the win. The 29-year-old has allowed fewer than two runs in four of his last five outings but has completed six innings just twice in that span. Cobb had no trouble cutting through Boston's lineup at home on July 8, when he scattered two hits over 7 2/3 scoreless frames to pick up a victory.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Red Sox were fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball for using a device to steal signs against the Yankees.

    2. Tampa Bay RHP Tommy Hunter has not allowed a hit or a walk in any of his last six appearances, totaling six innings.

    3. Boston INF Eduardo Nunez (knee) and DH Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) are both day-to-day.

The Chicago White Sox are prepared for some inconsistency with their young team, and extremes from one game to the next are not uncommon. The White Sox will try to swing back to the extreme that saw them dominate the first game of the series when they visit the Detroit Tigers for the third of a four-game set on Saturday.

Chicago pounded out 25 hits in a 17-7 thrashing in Thursday's opener but was held to eight hits in a 3-2, walk-off setback on Friday. The White Sox are just looking for small signs of improvement to show that the young players are moving in the right direction, and potential franchise cornerstone Yoan Moncada provided the game's first run with a solo homer on Saturday after scoring five runs in the series opener. The Tigers are just happy to get a win after dropping six in a row and improved to 3-12 since hitting the reset button with the trades of Justin Upton and Justin Verlander at the end of last month when their own young players got together on the winning run with Mikie Mahtook driving in Jeimer Candelario. Both teams will feature a young pitcher looking to prove he belongs in the majors when Chicago sends Reynaldo Lopez up against Detroit's Myles Jaye.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Reynaldo Lopez (1-3, 4.76 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Myles Jaye (1-1, 6.75)

Lopez earned his first win for Chicago last time out, when he scattered three runs and eight hits over six innings at Kansas City. The Dominican Republic native struck out a season-low one in that turn but finally got some run support in the 11-3 triumph to escape with the win. Lopez turned in quality starts in three of his first four turns but could not get enough help from his offense.

Jaye made his first two appearances out of the bullpen before getting a turn in the rotation and struggling in a loss at Cleveland on Monday. The 25-year-old was ripped for seven runs on seven hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Jaye was just 4-13 despite a 3.96 ERA in 25 minor league starts split between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo before being recalled.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Tigers acquired 19-year-old RHP Elvin Rodriguez from the Los Angeles Angels to complete the Justin Upton trade.

    2. Chicago RF Avisail Garcia is 15-for-27 with 10 RBIs in his last six games.

    3. Detroit RF Nick Castellanos hit safely in each of the last 12 games.

Rhys Hoskins' impressive power display has generated enormous buzz for a Philadelphia Phillies team that has owned the league's worst record for much of the season. With 18 homers in 35 contests since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Hoskins looks to add to his historic total as the Phillies continue their 10-game homestand with the opener of a three-game interleague set against the Oakland Athletics on Friday.

Hopkins has been the talk of baseball after clubbing 18 homers in his first 34 games before he was shut down in Philadelphia's 4-0 loss to Oakland in the series opener. Matt Olson provided the Athletics with the only runs they would need with a two-run shot for his 19th of the year, coming in 51 games. Matt Joyce also had a two-run blast -- his career-best 24th -- as Oakland won for only the 23rd time in 72 road games. The Phillies, who had scored 27 runs in winning their previous three games, turn to a promising rookie pitcher in Ben Lively while Oakland counters with Kendall Graveman.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (5-4, 4.48 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Ben Lively (3-6, 3.86)

Graveman bounced back from a pair of mediocre efforts against the Los Angeles Angels -- both no-decisions -- by picking up the win with six innings of one-run ball against Houston on Sunday. He had allowed nine runs in 10 innings in the two outings versus the Angels to end a streak of three straight quality starts. Graveman is unbeaten at home but 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA in seven road starts.

Lively was a hard-luck loser against Stephen Strasburg and Washington on Sunday, giving up three runs and six hits while striking out seven over a season-high eight innings. It was his fourth quality start in five turns since he was recalled from Lehigh Valley on Aug. 20. Lively is seeking his first victory at Citizens Bank Park since winning his major league debut on June 3.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Phillies SS J.P. Crawford had both his team's hits Friday to extend his hitting streak to five games.

    2. Olson has belted 11 homers in his last 17 games.

    3. Phillies rookie RF Nick Williams had his 12-game hitting streak halted in the series opener.

The Toronto Blue Jays' hopes of making the playoffs are remote at best, but they are getting plenty of practice playing in pressure-packed games. With 10 of their 14 games in September having been decided by one run, the Blue Jays continue their four-game series Saturday at the Minnesota Twins, who are holding down the second wild card.

Toronto bounced back from a 10th-inning loss in the series opener by rallying for a 4-3 victory Friday night. Josh Donaldson homered as part of a three-hit night, capping it by driving in the tiebreaking run for the American League's lowest-scoring team. Twins center field Byron Buxton, who had a walk-off homer Thursday, continued to torment the Blue Jays with a pair of hits Friday and is 11-for-21 with four homers and eight RBIs in the last five meetings. Minnesota is four games behind wild-card leader New York and two games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for the second wild card.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (8-8, 4.96 ERA) vs. Twins LH Adalberto MejÃ*a (4-5, 4.47)

Estrada lasted only five innings but extended his unbeaten streak to five starts against Baltimore on Monday, permitting two runs on four hits while striking out seven. He has surrendered three runs or fewer in eight of his last 10 outings, including six innings of three-run ball in a win over Minnesota on Aug. 26. Joe Mauer is 6-for-18 against Estrada, who has established a career best with 166 strikeouts.

Mejia, sidelined for more than a month with a biceps strain, will come off the disabled list to make his first start since Aug. 8 after tossing five scoreless innings in his last rehab outing. Since winning three consecutive starts from June 23 to July 3, he is 0-2 over his last six turns and failed to pitch beyond 5 1/3 innings in his last five. His home ERA (5.40) is more than double the mark on the road (2.54).

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Blue Jays CF Kevin Pillar is 11-for-26 over the past seven games.

    2. Buxton has 21 straight stolen bases, one shy of tying Matt Lawton and Chuck Knoblauch for the team's all-time mark.

    3. Blue Jays OF Steve Pearce (back) has been sidelined for seven straight games.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 5, Twins 4

Although they are officially listed as the visiting team due to the damage inflicted in Florida by Hurricane Irma, the Milwaukee Brewers took advantage of the cozy confines of Miller Park to stay on a roll. The Brewers have won three in a row and six of seven entering the second of a three-game set against the reeling Miami Marlins.

First baseman Eric Thames has homered in three straight games for Milwaukee, which remained three games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and 2 1/2 behind Colorado for the second wild-card. Neil Walker highlighted an eight-run eighth inning with a grand slam -- one of four homers hit by the Brewers -- in Friday's series-opening 10-2 victory. Forced to shift the series to Milwaukee because or Irma, the Marlins have lost six in a row and 16 of 18. Miami's pitching staff has unraveled over the past week, surrendering 53 runs during the six-game skid.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (17-8, 3.67 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Adam Conley (6-7, 5.23)

Davies has posted nine quality starts in his last 11 appearances and is coming off another impressive performance, earning his third win over his last four turns after holding the reigning world champion Cubs to one run over seven innings Sunday. The 24-year-old has allowed only five earned runs over his last six starts, going 4-2 in that span, and hasn't permitted a home run since July 30. Justin Bour is 5-for-11 with a home run and six RBIs against Davies.

Conley escaped with a no-decision last Saturday at Atlanta despite getting tagged for four runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings, running his winless streak to four starts. He has struggled to keep the ball in the park over the past seven weeks, yielding 11 of his 15 homers over his last nine starts. Ryan Braun is 5-for-9 against Conley, who has 25 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings versus the Brewers.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Marlins 2B Dee Gordon is in the midst of a career-high 17-game hitting streak.

    2. Thames is riding a five-game hitting streak, while 3B Travis Shaw ended a seven-game hitless drought at Miller Park with a 1-for-4 effort on Friday.

    3. Marlins SS Miguel Rojas has hit safely in four straight games, going 7-for-16.

GAME: New York Mets (63-84) at Atlanta Braves (67-79)

Jacob deGrom makes his 30th start of the season for the New York Mets on Saturday night against the host Atlanta Braves, and they can only wonder what could have been if the rest of the starting rotation had remained as healthy. The Mets hoped to contend for the National League East title in 2017 until their season crumbled due to a rash of injuries, and they enter the middle contest of this weekend’s series against the Braves 21 games under .500 with losses in five straight.

One positive for the Mets is the play of infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, who extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 3-for-3 performance in Friday’s 3-2 loss in the series opener. Braves rookie second baseman Ozzie Albies extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double in the first inning to help Atlanta open its nine-game homestand with a victory. Center fielder Ender Inciarte recorded his 188th hit of the season - the most by an Atlanta player since Jeff Francoeur in 2007 - and he is 12 shy of becoming the first Brave to reach 200 since Marquis Grissom in 1996. Atlanta has won seven of its past nine games but lost left fielder Matt Kemp to a strained left hamstring after four innings Friday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (14-9, 3.63 ERA) vs. Braves RH R.A. Dickey (9-9, 4.28)

DeGrom’s streak of 20 consecutive starts with a decision ended Sunday against Cincinnati, as he gave up two runs across six innings while fanning 10 for his 10th double-digit strikeout game of the season. The 29-year-old started the weekend second in the NL with a career-best 221 strikeouts but has surrendered five runs or more in three of his past six outings. DeGrom is 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA in two starts against the Braves this season and is 4-3 in 10 career starts against Atlanta with a 2.29 ERA.

Dickey has won just once in his past five starts as the 42-year-old looks to reach double-figures in victories for the sixth consecutive season. He has struggled in his first two September starts, posting a 10.61 ERA with 12 runs on 14 hits allowed in just 9 1/3 innings, after going 3-1 with a 3.55 ERA in five August outings. Dickey, who won 39 games with the Mets from 2010-12, has won both starts this season against his former team with a 4.09 ERA.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Atlanta rookie 3B Rio Ruiz, who hit .175 in 31 games in May and June, is batting .293 in September after recording two hits Friday.

    2. New York SS Amed Rosario did not play with a right hip flexor injury suffered Thursday in Chicago that may sideline him for the rest of the series.

    3. Atlanta C Tyler Flowers (bruised left hand) likely will miss the weekend after being hit with a pitch Wednesday at Washington.

    PREDICTION: Mets 5, Braves 2

The Colorado Rockies are playing solid baseball as they attempt to claim a National League wild-card spot. Colorado aims for its 10th victory in 13 games when it hosts the San Diego Padres on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set.

The Rockies won the series opener 6-1 to remain 2 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee and move 3 1/2 in front of St. Louis for the second NL wild card. Colorado is looking to defeat San Diego for the seventh straight time and holds a 9-4 advantage in the season series. Nolan Arenado clubbed his 34th homer for the Rockies on Friday and raised his major league-leading RBI count to 124, nine shy of the career high he set last season. The Padres have dropped four consecutive games, getting outscored 28-4 during the slide.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Jordan Lyles (1-2, 6.75 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (4-5, 5.75)

Lyles beat Arizona in his second start as a member of the Padres, allowing four runs and six hits in five innings. He made 33 relief appearances for the Rockies this season before being released, ending a stint of more than 3 1/2 seasons in the Mile High City. Lyles is 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA in four career appearances (two starts) versus Colorado and is 7-6 with a 5.48 ERA in 56 games (19 starts) at Coors Field.

Anderson is replacing the struggling Kyle Freeland in the rotation after pitching four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win against Arizona on Monday. The appearance was Anderson's first since June 25 due to knee surgery, and manager Bud Black termed his performance "outstanding." Anderson made his major-league debut against the Padres last season, allowing one run and six hits over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Rockies (81-67) are one victory away from recording their first winning campaign since 2010.

    2. San Diego 1B Wil Myers hit his 28th homer on Friday to match the career high he set last season.

    3. Colorado 2B DJ LeMahieu contributed a two-run triple in the opener, his third of the month and fourth of the season.

    PREDICTION: Rockies 13, Padres 3
