The major league-best Los Angeles Dodgers were unable to complete a weekend sweep but look to get back to their winning ways when they begin a four-game series Monday against the last-place Philadelphia Phillies. Los Angeles had won four straight following an 11-game losing streak before falling 7-1 in Washington on Sunday.

The Dodgers, who already have clinched a playoff berth, managed to record only five hits in the setback as their magic number for securing a fifth consecutive National League West title remained at four. Justin Turner and Corey Seager each went 1-for-3 and have hit safely in eight of nine games for Los Angeles. Philadelphia fell to 4-2 on its 10-game homestand after dropping a 6-3 decision to Oakland on Sunday. Phillies rookie sensation Rhys Hoskins had a rough series against the Athletics, going 0-for-11 with six strikeouts after a three-game performance versus Miami in which he went 5-for-10 with five walks, four home runs and seven RBIs.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (17-3, 2.12 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (5-10, 6.75)

Kershaw put an end to Los Angeles' lengthy slide on Tuesday, when he earned the win at San Francisco after allowing two runs - one earned - over six innings. The 29-year-old Texan has gone 9-0 in 10 road outings after losing at Colorado in his first turn away from home on April 8. Philadelphia is one of only three teams against which Kershaw owns a losing record, as he is 3-4 in 11 career starts but has posted a 2.92 ERA and one shutout.

Pivetta escaped with a no-decision versus Miami on Tuesday after being tagged for seven runs and eight hits over five innings. It marked the second straight outing in which the 24-year-old Canadian rookie struggled, as he surrendered six runs and 10 hits over five frames in a setback against the Mets in New York on Sept. 6. Pivetta made his major-league debut versus the Dodgers in Los Angeles on April 30 and pitched well, allowing two runs over five innings in a hard-luck loss.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Dodgers 2B Logan Forsythe drove in the team's lone run on Sunday, giving him an RBI in four of his last seven games.

    2. Philadelphia needs to win five of its final 13 contests to avoid its first 100-loss season since 1961, when it went 47-107.

    3. Los Angeles rookie 1B Cody Bellinger went 0-for-4 on Sunday to end a five-game hitting streak during which he went 8-for-16 with two homers and five RBIs.

    PREDICTION: Dodgers 8, Phillies 2

The Miami Marlins return home for the first time since Hurricane Irma to open a three-game series against the New York Mets on Monday. Miami followed a seven-game road trip by playing a three-game “home” series at Milwaukee following the storm.

It’s a brief stop at home for the Marlins, who begin a six-game trek at Arizona on Friday. "We get home and leave again Wednesday," Marlins manager Don Mattingly told reporters. "You are home for two days and repack. … But it is always good to get back home and assess the situation." The situation hasn’t been great for the Marlins of late, as they’ve lost 17 of their last 20 games, but they occupy second place in the National League East - 21 games behind division champion Washington. The Mets have won two straight following a five-game skid and are coming off their first series win on the road since taking three of four at Philadelphia from Aug. 10-13.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (5-5, 6.14 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (9-9, 4.24)
Harvey’s disappointing campaign continued when he was tagged for five runs and seven hits over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. The 28-year-old issued four free passes and has walked 40 in 80 2/3 frames this season. Harvey is 2-3 with a 3.56 ERA in 10 career starts against the Marlins.
Straily has been a steady contributor to the Marlins’ rotation all season, but he is coming off his worst start of the year. The 28-year-old journeyman was shelled for eight runs and 13 hits over six innings in a loss at Philadelphia on Wednesday. Straily is 0-1 with a 4.02 ERA in three career starts against the Mets.

    WALK-OFFS
    1. Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton (fatigue) was limited to pinch-hitting duty on Sunday and has not homered since belting his 54th of the season on Sept. 9.
    2. Mets INF Asdrubal Cabrera is batting .449 with eight doubles, three homers, and 10 RBIs in 15 games this month.
    3. Miami 2B Dee Gordon has reached base in 19 of his last 20 games, batting .384 with 12 multi-hit performances during that stretch.

GAME: Oakland Athletics (66-83) at Detroit Tigers (62-87)
    DATE/TIME: Monday, September 18 - 7:10 PM EST
    WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
    Preview: Athletics at Tigers

    Gracenote
    Sep 17, 2017

A pair of teams that have been looking toward next year for several weeks meet Monday in Detroit, where the Tigers host the Oakland Athletics in the first of three games. The Tigers have been seeking positive signs for their future as they play out the string and they received several Sunday in a 12-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Lefty Matt Boyd came within an out of a no-hitter before settling for a one-hit shutout and Jeimer Candelario and Nick Castellanos - two of the team's young bats - had four RBIs apiece. Detroit split the four-game series and remains two games up on the White Sox as they battle it out for the consolation prize of not finishing last in the American League Central. The Athletics are all but assured of that fate in the West, although they've won eight of 11 after a 6-3 win in Philadelphia on Sunday. Oakland gives the ball to Jharel Cotton in the opener at Comerica Park opposite fellow right-hander Buck Farmer.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Jharel Cotton (8-10, 5.81 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Buck Farmer (4-3, 6.62)

Cotton is 3-0 with a 5.74 ERA in his last five starts after defeating the Boston Red Sox with five innings of three-run ball his last time out. That outing left the 25-year-old with a 3.94 mark in 11 road outings, nearly half his ERA at home (7.52). Cotton will be facing the Tigers for the first time.

Farmer gave up four runs and four hits with three walks in four innings at Cleveland on Wednesday but he did manage seven strikeouts and has 38 in 35 1/3 innings on the season. The Georgia Tech product has struggled mightily at Comerica Park with 18 runs allowed over 7 2/3 innings in his last three home starts. Matt Joyce is 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk against Farmer, who is making his first career start versus Oakland.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Oakland 1B Matt Olson has homered in three straight games and in six of the last eight.

    2. Castellanos has hit safely in 14 straight games and driven in four runs three times during the streak.

    3. Athletics LF Khris Davis (paternity leave) has missed the last four games but is expected to rejoin the team Monday.

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (87-63) at San Diego Padres (66-83)

    Preview: Diamondbacks at Padres

    Gracenote
    Sep 17, 2017

One day after having their four-game winning streak halted, the Arizona Diamondbacks attempt to further solidify their hold on the top wild-card spot in the National League when they visit the San Diego Padres on Monday for the opener of their three-game series. Arizona, which owns a five-game lead over Colorado, managed only six hits in Sunday's 7-2 loss at San Francisco.

Chris Iannetta recorded half of the Diamondbacks' hits while J.D. Martinez notched a pair, including his career-high 40th home run of year. The 30-year-old outfielder has gone deep 11 times in 14 games this month and is the fifth player in major-league history to total 40 blasts with multiple teams in a season. San Diego helped Arizona's quest for the top wild card on Sunday, posting a 4-3 victory at Colorado to end its five-game losing streak. Austin Hedges executed a successful squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth inning to snap a tie for the Padres, who took two of three at Arizona from Sept. 8-10.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (14-12, 4.06 ERA) vs. Padres RH Luis Perdomo (7-10, 4.61)

Corbin seeks revenge for a loss to San Diego on Sept. 8 in which he was battered for eight runs and 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings. The setback dropped the 28-year-old New Yorker to 5-6 with a 4.29 ERA in 15 career appearances (10 starts) against the Padres. Corbin recorded his career high-tying 14th victory on Wednesday, when he limited Colorado to one run and four hits over 6 2/3 frames for his sixth win in seven turns.

Perdomo also is looking to redeem himself as he took the loss at Arizona on Sept. 10 after giving up three runs - all solo homers - over six innings. The loss dropped the 24-year-old Dominican to 0-3 versus the Diamondbacks this season and 3-4 with a 5.40 ERA in 10 career meetings (six starts). Perdomo has won only once in six outings but has worked at least six frames in each of his last 10 turns.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Padres 1B Wil Myers was back in the lineup Sunday after exiting the night before with a right knee contusion and went 0-for-2 with two walks.

    2. Martinez has collected 22 RBIs this month and registered six multi-hit performances in his last eight contests.

    3. San Diego OF Jabari Blash is day-to-day due to an infection in his mouth.

    PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 6, Padres 2

    Now about this complimentary winner

Short and sweet freebie: take the Over in the N.L. Central showdown between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Look this one is about the pitchers, as both won't last past the fifth, with the toal nearing the prescribed number by then.

Since every MLB wager on a run line or total auto-lists pitchers, I want you to be sure the two pitchers on your ticket, when making this play, are Brent Suter and Jameson Taillon. If they are not the pitchers of record when making your play, disregard this play.

Let's start with Suter, who is getting closer to a full workload after throwing 50 pitches in his last outing, his second abbreviated start and third appearance since returning from a rotator cuff injury. The southpaw should be up to 70-75 pitches for this game, but it's a work in progress, and he will struggle against this lineup.

Taillon allowed six runs over 4.2 innings against the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 7, his most recent start before taking an extended period of rest. While I'm sure the Pirates are hoping that time off will benefit him, as he's posted a 7.17 ERA in 11 second-half starts.

I like this one to soar.

2* OVER Brewers-Pirates (Suter and Taillon)

Monday night comp play will be the runs to add up in the Mets-Marlins game.

The Mets have played Over the total in 5 of their last 7 games, and starter Matt Harvey has not been at all impressive since returning from the disabled list, as he has been shellacked for 14 September runs in his 10-plus innings pitched!

The Over has gone 2-0-1 in those 3 starts since rejoining the rotation.

The Marlins are 6-0-2 Over the total in their last 8 games played, and starter Dan Straily sports an ERA over 8 for his last 3 starts, the Over also going 2-0-1 in those 3 efforts.

Nothing more needs be said....Mets-Marlins Over.

    5* N.Y. METS-MIAMI OVER
