    Preview: Red Sox at Orioles

    Gracenote
    Sep 19, 2017

Drew Pomeranz has emerged victorious in back-to-back starts and 10 of his last 11 decisions to reside one win shy of Cleveland's Corey Kluber for the most in the American League. Pomeranz looks to continue his career year on Tuesday as the visiting Boston Red Sox aim to strengthen their hold atop the AL East in the second contest of a three-game series versus the Baltimore Orioles.

Pitching wasn't the name of the game in the series opener, as the Red Sox overcame an early five-run deficit and Andrew Benintendi capped the uprising with a two-run single in the 11th inning of a 10-8 victory. The 23-year-old has 16 hits, 12 RBIs and seven runs scored in his last nine contests for AL East-leading Boston, which has won nine of their last 12 and resides three games ahead of the New York Yankees. Baltimore's Manny Machado slowly is putting a woeful 0-for-16 stretch in his rear-view mirror with a hit in each of his last two games, but is just 2-for-11 in his career versus Pomeranz. The Orioles' faint playoff aspirations have taken a significant hit as the team has dropped 10 of 12 to sit 5 1/2 games in back of Minnesota for the second wild-card spot.

The 28-year-old faced Baltimore three times in his first five starts of the season, posting a 2-1 mark while surrendering just five runs while striking out 17 in 16 2/3 innings. Pomeranz has flustered Jonathan Schoop (1-for-9, four strikeouts), Mark Trumbo (2-for-10) and Adam Jones (3-for-14), although Welington Castillo (3-for-8, one homer) has found some success versus the hurler.

Gausman recorded his third strong performance in his last four outings on Wednesday, yielding one run on six hits over seven innings in a 2-1 win over Toronto. The 26-year-old began that stretch by scattering four hits over 7 2/3 frames in a 7-0 rout at Boston on Aug. 26. Gausman, who has allowed one or no earned runs in seven of his past 11 starts, owns a 1-2 mark in three turns versus the Red Sox this seasondespite limiting the club to a .226 batting average.

The Milwaukee Brewers are a hot team entering Tuesday's road contest against the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates as they attempt to chase down a playoff spot. The Brewers recorded a 3-0 victory in Monday's opener of the three-game set and have tallied 60 runs while winning eight of their past 10 games.

The latest triumph moved the Brewers 3 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and two games in back of the Colorado Rockies for the second wild-card spot. Milwaukee left fielder Ryan Braun went 2-for-3 with a homer on Monday and is 7-for-16 with two homers, two doubles and three walks over the past four games. While the Brewers are touching home plate with high frequency, Pittsburgh is on the other spectrum by scoring two or fewer runs in seven of the past eight games. The setback in the opener of an eight-game homestand was the Pirates' sixth in a row and 11th in the last 12 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Chase Anderson (10-3, 2.88 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Trevor Williams (6-8, 4.26)

Anderson has won back-to-back starts as well as three consecutive decisions. The 29-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.43 ERA in 12 road starts, compared to a perfect 5-0 home mark. Anderson is 5-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 10 career starts against Pittsburgh -- and 2-0 with a 2.43 ERA in two 2017 starts, including a victory in his last turn when he gave up two runs (one earned) and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Williams lost to St. Louis in his last outing and has dropped four of its past five decisions. The 25-year-old gave up four runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Cardinals, marking the third time in his last five outings that he pitched five or fewer innings. Williams allowed three runs and six hits in six innings during a no-decision on June 21 in his lone career start against Milwaukee.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Monday's victory was only the Brewers' second in eight games at PNC Park this season.

    2. Pittsburgh C Francisco Cervelli (quadriceps) was shut down for the rest of the season - he last played on Aug. 25.

    3. Milwaukee OF Domingo Santana (back), who has eight RBIs in his past four games, sat out the opener but should return Tuesday.

Aaron Judge has given the Yankee Stadium faithful plenty of thrills by launching 28 of his American League-leading 44 homers at home this season. The 25-year-old rookie aims to continue the power surge and reach base for the 15th straight game on Tuesday as the New York Yankees vie for a series victory over the visiting Minnesota Twins.

Judge belted his fifth homer in eight contests in Monday's 2-1 victory for New York, which has won 13 of its last 18 games and resides three games behind AL East-leading Boston. Brett Gardner, who is 7-for-15 against Minnesota this season, collected three singles in the series opener and carries a nine-game hitting streak into Tuesday's tilt versus right-hander Jose Berrios. The Twins, who have dropped three of their last four contests after winning six of their previous eight, sit 1 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for the second wild-card spot. Eddie Rosario scored Minnesota's lone run in the series opener and is 5-for-12 with three solo homers in the last three games.
TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN North (Minnesota), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jose Berrios (12-7, 3.84 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (11-5, 3.85)

Berrios has settled for a pair of no-decisions in his last two starts despite allowing three runs in 12 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old also fared well and picked up the win in his last encounter with New York, permitting one run on six hits in 6 2/3 frames of a 6-1 triumph on July 19. Berrios has struggled away from home this season, however, posting a 4-6 mark on the road with a 5.14 ERA as opposed to an 8-1 record with a 2.45 ERA at Target Field.

Like Berrios, Sabathia also has notched a pair of no-decisions in his last two encounters - although his scheduled start on Sunday was pushed back to prevent the veteran from pitching on artificial turf in Toronto. The 37-year-old, who lasted just 4 1/3 innings in his last outing at Tampa Bay on Sept. 11, owns a 2-0 mark with a 3.14 ERA since returning from disabled list in mid-August. Sabathia is 18-9 with a 3.16 ERA in his career against Minnesota and has kept Joe Mauer (7-for-43, 17 strikeouts) and Robbie Grossman (0-for-5) under wraps, although Chris Gimenez has gotten his licks in by going 5-for-12.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. New York RHP Aroldis Chapman, who recorded a five-out save in the opener, has surrendered just one hit and struck out nine in his last five appearances (six scoreless innings).

    2. Mauer is 5-for-13 with three extra-base hits (two double, homer) and five RBIs in his last three games.

    3. New York C Gary Sanchez is 0-for-8 with three strikeouts after collecting three straight two-hit performances.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (73-76) at Toronto Blue Jays (70-80)
    DATE/TIME: Tuesday, September 19 - 7:07 PM EST
    WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
    Preview: Royals at Blue Jays

    Gracenote
    Sep 18, 2017

Not only did the Kansas City Royals have to watch the Cleveland Indians celebrate an American League Central title over the weekend, but the latest loss served as a reminder how far a postseason berth is from their grasp. Losers of four of five, Kansas City resumes its 11-game road trip by opening a three-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Kansas City's chances of making up a 4 1/2-game deficit on Minnesota for the second wild card appears bleak - especially with as many as six other teams contending for the same slot - with only 13 contests remaining on the season overall and the next seven on the road. The Royals also are a physical mess, forcing manager Ned Yost to sit regulars Salvador Perez, Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas for the series finale at Cleveland. Sunday's loss dropped the Royals three games under .500 for the first time since June 17 as they prepare to face Toronto, which has won six of nine but is relegated to playing spoiler. Right-hander Marcus Stroman will get the nod for the Blue Jays in the series opener while Yost remains still undecided on his starter.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (4-11, 5.45 ERA) or RH Sam Gaviglio (4-5, 4.35) vs. Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (11-8, 3.08)

Kennedy is winless since July 26 and was held out of his last start due to shoulder tightness, but Yost is holding out hope he can go - otherwise, Gaviglio will get the call. "We just got to see how Ian feels," Yost told reporters Sunday. "We're leaving it open at this point. He's getting better. But if not, we've got Sam." Kennedy is 0-5 in his last eight starts, while Gaviglio has yielded three runs in his last two starts.

Stroman lost his second straight start last time out, giving up two unearned runs over six innings while dealing with tightness in his forearm, but he pronounced himself good to go. He is seeking what would be a career-best 12th win and, despite a sub-.500 home record, he owns a 2.60 ERA in 16 starts at Rogers Centre this season. Melky Cabrera has been a nemesis for Stroman with five hits in nine at-bats.

GAME: New York Mets (65-85) at Miami Marlins (70-80)

Giancarlo Stanton was given a day off on Sunday after telling manager Don Mattingly he was feeling fatigued, but all he and his Miami Marlins' teammates did one day later was wear out the New York Mets. Coming off a rout of the Mets in the opener of their three-game set in Miami, the Marlins try to make it two in a row Tuesday when they continue their series with their National League East rival.

Miami held on to its slim postseason hopes for one more day as Stanton belted his major-league leading 55th home run, while Dee Gordon and Marcell Ozuna each had four hits apiece in Monday's 13-1 win over New York. The Marlins, who spent the weekend in Milwaukee playing a "home" series against the Brewers due to the effects of Hurricane Irma, won for only the fourth time in their last 21 contests, and will be eliminated from wild-card consideration with one more loss or Colorado's next victory. The Mets entered Miami coming off a series victory in Atlanta, but the NL's most homer-happy squad failed to hit one out of the park for the third time in four contests. Nori Aoki continued to swing a hot bat, however, and is 8-for-14 at the plate over the last three games after going 3-for-5 on Monday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Seth Lugo (6-5, 5.21 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Odrisamer Despaigne (0-3, 4.35)

Lugo, who is pitching through a partially torn elbow ligament, is coming off the worst start of the season Thursday in Chicago after surrendering eight runs (seven earned) and nine hits in three frames in a loss to the Cubs. The 27-year-old Centenary alum has struggled for the most part in 11 road outings (10 starts), allowing opponents to bat .330 while posting a 6.59 ERA. Lugo was sharper in his one start this season against the Marlins, earning the win after yielding three runs (two earned) over six innings on June 29.

Despaigne threw 15 pitches in relief Sunday in Baltimore, seven days after settling for a no-decision in Atlanta after giving up five runs on four hits and six walks in 3 2/3 frames. The 30-year-old Cuban is winless since Aug. 1, 2015 - a span of 47 appearances (seven starts) - and is 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA in five turns this season. Despaigne lost his only start versus the Mets this season on May 6 and has surrendered a total of 11 runs (six earned) across five innings in two games against them in 2017.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Marlins improved to 10-7 against New York this season, guaranteeing themselves their first season series victory against the Mets since 2013.

    2. New York SS Asdrubal Cabrera went hitless in the opener to snap an 11-game hitting streak, but he is still batting .488 with eight doubles, two homers, eight RBI and seven runs scored over his last 12 contests.

    3. With his four-hit effort Monday, Gordon tied Cabrera (.400) for the best batting average for a NL player since Aug. 25.

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (77-72) at Cincinnati Reds (66-84)
    DATE/TIME: Tuesday, September 19 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
    Preview: Cardinals at Reds

    Gracenote
    Sep 18, 2017

With their postseason hopes dealt a serious setback following a sweep by a bitter rival, the St. Louis Cardinals try to pick up the pieces when they continue a nine-game road trip Tuesday night with the first of three against the Cincinnati Reds. St. Louis was swept by first-place Chicago to fall six games behind the Cubs in the National League Central.

Going from the first-place Cubs to the last-place Reds isn't necessarily a panacea for the Cardinals, who are 7-9 against Cincinnati this season and sit 4 1/2 games in back of Colorado for the NL's second wild card with 13 to play. "We didn't give away games, we got beat," St. Louis right-hander Lance Lynn told reporters after Sunday's loss in Chicago. "So we've got to win the next one and the next and the next one and the next one and hope that these guys don't do that and the wild-card teams don't do that." St. Louis also has to overtake division rival Milwaukee but can't afford a misstep against the Reds, who have won three straight after sweeping Pittsburgh over the weekend. Cincinnati has won seven straight overall at Great American Ball Park and is 5-2 at home against the Cardinals this season.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Jack Flaherty (0-1, 6.08 ERA) vs. Reds RH Jackson Stephens (2-0, 2.38 ERA)

Flaherty, promoted to the rotation when rosters were expanded on Sept. 1, remains in search of his first victory as he prepares to make his fourth major league start. A first-round draft pick in 2014, the 21-year-old took the loss last time out against Cincinnati after allowing three runs and four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Flaherty permitted one run in a season-high five innings at San Diego on Sept. 6.

Stephens won his only career start when he beat the Chicago Cubs on July 1 in his major league debut, striking out eight and allowing three runs and six hits over five innings. He was sent back to the minors after that start and was brought back earlier this month, pitching in relief while recording three scoreless outings. Stephens faced St. Louis in his last appearance and surrendered two hits over three innings.

    EXTRA BASES

    1. Cardinals LF Tommy Pham is 12-for-37 with a homer and eight RBIs against the Reds in 2017.

    2. Cincinnati 2B Scooter Gennett became the fifth player on the team to reach 25 homers, only the second time in club history that's happened.

    3. Cardinals CF Dexter Fowler was 4-for-8 against the Cubs over the weekend, but is only 6-for-29 versus Cincinnati this season.

GAME: Oakland Athletics (67-83) at Detroit Tigers (62-88)

Matt Olson is displaying that the Oakland Athletics have a powerful first baseman in the fold for next season. The rookie enters Tuesday's road game against the Detroit Tigers with homers in four consecutive games and 11 in September after going deep in Monday's 8-3 victory in the opener of the three-game set.

Olson is the first Oakland player to homer in four consecutive games since Coco Crisp in 2013 and has slugged 14 blasts in his past 20 games. "You can't expect something like this to happen," Olson told reporters. "I know I'm capable of it. Just kind of sit back and be in the moment and approach it the same way as the day before." Olson's hot stretch has helped the Athletics win nine of their past 12 contests while the Tigers have lost eight of their last 10 and are just 4-14 in September. Third baseman Nicholas Castellanos is playing well and had three hits in the opener and is 25-for-58 with four homers and 16 RBIs during a career-long 15-game hitting streak.

    TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (Oakland), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Daniel Gossett (4-9, 5.02 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Chad Bell (0-3, 6.42)

Gossett lost to the Boston Red Sox in his last turn when he gave up three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old rookie has dropped three of his last four decisions, with the win during the span occurring when he held the Houston Astros to one run and five hits over six innings. Gossett is the third pitcher in Oakland franchise history to lose at least nine games in his first 15 major-league appearances.

GAME: Chicago Cubs (83-66) at Tampa Bay Rays (73-77)
    DATE/TIME: Tuesday, September 19 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
    Preview: Cubs at Rays

    Gracenote
    Sep 18, 2017

The Chicago Cubs have never won at Tropicana Field, but their manager has a nice history there. Joe Maddon returns to his former home stadium as his Cubs play a two-game interleague series against the Tampa Bay Rays beginning Tuesday.

Maddon managed the Rays for nine seasons and claimed the American League pennant in 2008 - the year the Cubs made their first visit to Tampa Bay and were swept in a three-game set. The games loom large for both teams, as the Cubs lead the National League Central by 3 1/2 games over Milwaukee and the Rays are trying to preserve their slim hopes in the American League wild card race. Tampa Bay has lost seven of its last 10 to fall five games behind Minnesota for the second wild card and is close to being eliminated from consideration with just 12 contests remaining. The Cubs have won six straight to reduce their magic number to clinch the NL Central to 10.
TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Mike Montgomery (6-8, 3.57 ERA) vs. Rays RH Chris Archer (9-10, 4.06)
Montgomery rejoins the rotation after one stint out of the bullpen in which he threw two scoreless innings to earn the win against the New York Mets on Thursday. The 28-year-old struggled in his last two starts but was dominant in the previous two, allowing one run over 13 innings. Montgomery is 0-3 with a 3.60 ERA in four games (one start) against the Rays.
Archer is having an rough September, as he has posted a 14.14 ERA while losing all three of his starts this month. The 28-year-old showed signs of getting back on track Wednesday against the New York Yankees, but he allowed three runs and six hits over four-plus innings and failed to record an out in the fifth. Archer, a former Cubs farmhand, is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts against Chicago.

    WALK-OFFS
    1. Cubs C Willson Contreras will be back in the lineup after serving a one-game suspension in Sunday’s contest.
    2. Rays CF Kevin Kiermaier is 10-for-36 with three homers during an eight-game hitting streak.
    3. Cubs 3B Kris Bryant is 10-for-26 with two homers and eight RBIs during a six-game hitting streak.

GAME: Washington Nationals (90-59) at Atlanta Braves (67-81)

    WHERE: SunTrust Park, Cumberland, Georgia
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
    Preview: Nationals at Braves

    Gracenote
    Sep 18, 2017

Injuries have derailed the past three years for Ryan Zimmerman, but the Washington Nationals first baseman continues to enjoy a rebound season entering Tuesday’s series opener at the Atlanta Braves. Zimmerman, who missed 215 games from 2014-16 with a variety of injuries, matched a career high in homers in Washington’s 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Zimmerman’s two homers in Sunday’s victory gives him 33 on the season, and the 32-year-old is hitting .301 with 99 RBIs and 29 doubles in 135 games for the NL East champions. “He doesn’t alibi or complain about anything,” Nationals manager Dusty Baker told reporters Sunday when Washington broke loose offensively after scoring just nine runs in its previous five games. The Braves lost two of three against the New York Mets at home last weekend and also have struggled on offense recently, hitting just .214 as a team while scoring nine runs in dropping three of their past four contests. Center fielder Ender Inciarte started the week third in the majors with 190 hits, 10 away from becoming the first Atlanta player since Marquis Grissom in 1996 to record 200 in a season.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (14-6, 2.59 ERA) vs. Braves LH Luiz Gohara (1-1, 6.30)

Scherzer began the week third in the majors in ERA and strikeouts (246), but looks to bounce back from a difficult outing in his last start against the Braves. He walked a season-high six hitters and allowed a season-high seven runs in an 8-2 home loss Wednesday - his first defeat since June 21. Scherzer, who has surrendered 11 runs in his past two starts after giving up only seven in his previous six outings, is 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in four starts against Atlanta this season.

Gohara benefited from the Braves hitting Scherzer hard Wednesday, earning his first victory in his second major-league start. The 21-year-old outpitched the Washington ace, not walking a batter and needing just 71 pitches to cover six innings while allowing only one earned run with six strikeouts. Gohara walked four and allowed six runs in his big-league debut Sept. 6 against Texas.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Atlanta hopes LF Matt Kemp (left hamstring tightness) and C Tyler Flowers (left hand bruise) are expected to return at some point in the series.

    2. Washington CF Michael Taylor has six extra-base hits in September, including four homers.

    3. Braves rookie LHP A.J. Minter has not walked a hitter in 10 innings across his first 10 major-league appearances, with 15 strikeouts and three runs allowed.

    PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Braves 2
