GAME: Chicago Cubs (84-66) at Tampa Bay Rays (73-78)
    DATE/TIME: Wednesday, September 20 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
    Preview: Cubs at Rays

    Gracenote
    Sep 20, 2017

The Chicago Cubs hope they’re getting hot at the right time. The Cubs have won seven straight contests and are closing in on another National League Central title as they wrap up a two-game interleague series against the host Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

Chicago reduced its magic number to clinch the division to nine with a 2-1 win over the Rays on Tuesday, as Mike Montgomery and three relievers combined on a one-hitter. Left-hander Jon Lester will try to keep the Rays’ offense on its heels as he returns to one of his former American League East haunts for the first time since 2014. Brad Miller’s solo homer was the only hit Tuesday for the Rays, who have lost eight of their last 11 and scored two or fewer runs in seven of their last 12 contests. The Cubs lead the NL Central by 3 1/2 games over Milwaukee, while the Rays are nearing elimination from the American League playoff race - sitting five games behind Minnesota for the second wild card.
TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (11-7, 4.30 ERA) vs. Rays LH Blake Snell (3-6, 4.25)
Lester has won three straight outings and recorded quality starts in his last two. The 33-year-old has struggled with his command somewhat in his last two starts, walking four each time out, but has limited the damage to three runs over 12 innings. Lester is 13-10 with a 4.22 ERA in 29 starts against the Rays, a frequent foe during his time in Boston.
Snell has won his last three decisions, and the Rays have won six of his last eight starts. The 24-year-old didn’t get a decision in his last outing Sept. 12 against the New York Yankees, allowing one run and two hits over five-plus innings. Snell faced the Cubs on July 5 at Wrigley Field and threw five scoreless innings in a no-decision.

    WALK-OFFS
    1. Chicago RHP Wade Davis converted his 32nd save in as many opportunities Tuesday, extending his franchise record.
    2. Rays 3B Evan Longoria has struck out 20 times in 66 plate appearances against Lester.
    3. Cubs RHP Jake Arrieta told reporters he plans to start Thursday against Milwaukee in his first action since straining his right hamstring on Sept. 4.

    PREDICTION: Cubs 5, Rays 3

National League East action as the Nationals go up against the Braves in game 2 of their 3 game series from Atlanta, Georgia.

When we take a look inside the numbers we see that Washington is damn good against bad teams, they currently stand at 8-3 in their last 11 vs. a team with a losing record. In addition when Gonzalez is rested he's flawless, 7-0 in his last seven starts with seven or more days of rest

In the other dugout we see that Atlanta does not play well in game 2's, they are 1-4 in their last five game 2's of a series. And most importantly they do not play well at home against the Nationals, 5-11 their last 16 home games in this series

The Nationals are coming off a tough home series against the Dodgers and they will look to straighten the ship today. Gonzalez will dominate and the Nationals will get an easy win.

My Wednesday comp play release is the Red Sox on the Run Line over the Orioles.

Baltimore is a demoralized team. Another extra-inning loss last night to Boston, as the O's have now dropped 11 of their last 13 games to all but eliminate themselves from any October baseball.

Boston has now won 5 of their last 6 games, and they do have Cy Young candidate Chris Sale on the hill.

Sale has had some struggles of late, but nothing like the struggles his counterpart Wade Miley has been going through, as Miley is winless over his last 3 starts with an ERA of 9.

Not a whole lot more I need to spout on about, as it is clear who the play is on here tonight at Camden Yards.

Red Sox on the Run Line.

    MLB | Rockies vs Giants
Play on: Rockies -120 at betonline

10* FREE MLB PICK (Rockies -120)

I'm jumping on the Rockies in what feels like a must-win game for them now that their lead for the final Wild Card spot in the NL is now just 1-game. Good news for Colorado is they are sending out Tyler Chatwood against the Giants. Chatwood has absolutely owned San Francisco both in his career and this season. He's 7-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 16 career games against the Giants, which includes a 2.25 ERA in 4 starts against them this season. All of which have resulted in Rockies wins. San Francisco counters with Matt Moore, who is just 5-14 with a 5.46 ERA on the season and owns a 6.19 ERA over his last 3 outings. Not to mention Moore has faced Colorado 3 times this season and allowed 19 runs on 30 hits and 6 walks in just 12 2/3 innings of work. Give me the Rockies -120!

My free winner for tonight is on the Philadelphia Phillies, catching big money against the Los Angeles Dodgers

I don't know what's going on with the Dodgers, who appeared ready to hoist the World Series trophy about six weeks ago, but now looks like it'll be lucky to escape the divisional series.

Traveling to Philly mired in a three-game losing streak, I'm taking a shot with the home underdog, while the Dodgers struggle at the plate.

    Play Philly.

    2* PHILLIES (straight action)

    MLB | Mets vs Marlins
Play on: Marlins -1½ +140 at BMaker

I think there is some good value here on the RL as I believe the Marlins will sweep the Mets here today. Urena takes the mound here and he has had a very good season for Miami with a 13-6 redcord and 3.75 ERA on the season. He enters the game in great form as well with a 2.00 ERA his last three starts.

The Mets counter with Montero who brings in a 5-7 overall record with a 4.73 ERA. His last 3 starts he has faced some easier teams in the Braves Reds and Phillies and has an ERA of 4.80 against them.

    MLB | Cardinals vs Reds
Play on: Cardinals -1½ -110 at betonline

Jack's Free Pick Wednesday: St. Louis Cardinals -1.5 (-110)

The St. Louis Cardinals are still alive in the wild card race at 3.5 games behind the Rockies. They won't quit until they're eliminated, and they pulled off a gutsy 9-8 win at Cincinnati yesterday. Look for them to cruise to victory by multiple runs Wednesday night thanks to their huge edge on the mound.

Luke Weaver looks to be the next great starter in St. Louis. Weaver has gone 6-1 with a 2.11 ERA and 0.984 WHIP in seven starts this season while striking out 55 batters in 42 2/3 innings. He is 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA and 0.803 WHIP in his last three starts as well.

Things have not gone nearly as smoothly for Cincinnati starter Rookie Davis in limited action. He is 1-2 with a 7.58 ERA and 2.211 WHIP in five starts this season, including 1-2 with an 8.25 ERA and 2.417 WHIP in his last three starts.

St. Louis is 6-0 in Weaver's last six starts. The Cardinals are 9-2 in their last 11 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Cincinnati is 4-17 in home games after a game where their bullpen blew a save over the last two seasons. Bet the Cardinals Wednesday.

MLB | Royals vs Blue Jays
Play on: Royals +107 at BMaker

The Royals are 4.5 back of the wild card so they still have plenty to play for here. I think they respond after dropping game 1 last night. Junis has been a bright spot in 13 games with a 5-2 record. He brings in a 3.18 ERA his last 3 starts and the last start was against the Indians only giving up 1 run. Anderson brings in a 8.59 ERA in home starts.

    MLB | Mets vs Marlins
Play on: Marlins -150 at BMaker

    Marlins

The Miami Marlins are hoping to produce a few more memorable moments to end another disappointing season and can finish off a three-game sweep of the visiting New York Mets when the National League East rivals meet Wednesday afternoon. While Giancarlo Stanton remained at 55 homers after going 0-for-1 with four walks Tuesday, teammate J.T. Realmuto hit a walk-off blast in the 10th inning to give Miami a 5-4 victory.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Rafael Montero (5-10, 5.08 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Urena (13-6, 3.62)

Montero saw his three-game winning streak come to an end last time out when he allowed three runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings at Atlanta last Friday. The 26-year-old Dominican Republic native found a way to limit opponents to five runs despite giving up 12 hits and 14 walks during his win streak. Marcell Ozuna is 6-for-11 and Miguel Rojas 4-for-6 versus Montero, who is 1-0 with a 5.02 ERA in six games (two starts) against Miami this year.

Urena has permitted two runs or fewer in six of his last nine outings, including each of the last three in which he went 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA. The 26-year-old Dominican earned nine of his wins on the road, but he owns a better ERA at Marlins Park (3.17) in 15 games (12 starts) than on the road (4.08). Urena, who has struggled with the home run ball while giving up 22 in 31 games, is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four appearances (two starts) against the Mets this year.

Mets are 2-10 in their last 12 road games. Marlins are 8-1 in Urenas last 9 starts vs. a team with a losing record.

    Now about this complimentary winner

I don't know what it is about San Diego, and Petco Park, but good teams go there to lose.

May 29-31, the Cubs got swept.

Sept. 1-3, the Dodgers won the lid-lifter and lost the last three.

Now, the Diamondbacks are on the brink of being swept.

There are other series I could mention, with teams that were good at the moment, or contending at that time, but are only in the wild card race now.

But San Diego has found a knack for beating playoff-bound teams. Period.

I'll take a shot with the Friars, who have won three in a row, catching money from a Diamondbacks team that has lost three straight.

My free winner is on the Houston Astros Run Line, over the Chicago White Sox. Normally I may not lay this big of a price with a run line, but this is a free play, and outside of my total tonight, it's the best option I've got in terms of an opinion.

IMPORTANT: As you know every single Run Line play and Total wager will automatically list the scheduled starting pitchers at the time of the wager. But with this game I am not concerned with who is pitching for either team tonight and want you playing this game on the Run Line regardless. That said, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be sure you have action even if one of the pitchers scheduled to start is scratched, by betting the game over again in the event that takes place.

Fact is, we have an Astros team that is in pursuit of the American League's best record, and they're hosting a wickedly dismal Chicago squad that can't seem to get out of its own way at times.

The Astros are 1 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Indians for the AL's top record, and could very well catch this team with so much motivation behind them.

Houston is playing for so much more than a title, after the devastation of Harvey, and I think this team's spirit has been lifted to carry the burden of lifting the city.

Look for the Astros to keep rolling toward the best record on the junior circuit.

    3* ASTROS RUN LINE
