    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    The Walker Group Picks

    # 10 BROOKSIDE 2/1

    # 6 VOLCOM BAY 7/2

    # 9 SR ESMERALDA 10/1

BROOKSIDE gets the edge as the bet in here. Has run quite well when racing a short race. Bard has shown excellent profits (+35 return on investment ) with horses in short events. With a strong 90 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, will surely be a factor in this affair. VOLCOM BAY - Could best this group here, showing respectable numbers of late. I like the rider on this filly - respectable chance to win the contest. SR ESMERALDA - Morin and Villatoro have won 24 percent of their races giving this racer a very good chance. Have to wager on this money-making jockey and handler duo.

    # 1 MARK TWELVE THIRTY 5/2

    # 5 COLOUR MY WORLD 7/2

    # 9 OSIOTTO 6/1

MARK TWELVE THIRTY looks very good to best this field. Is a solid contender based on numbers put up recently under today's conditions. He should definitely be given consideration given the quite good speed figs. Could beat this field given the 67 speed fig posted in his last outing. COLOUR MY WORLD - Has been running soundly lately and will most likely be close to the lead early on. Ought to be given consideration in this competition if only for the formidable speed figure posted in the last contest. OSIOTTO - Has to be given a shot - I like the numbers from the last contest. Is tough not to look at based on speed figures which have been solid - 57 avg - of late.

    TOMMY BRUNSON

Friday's comp play release will be the Kansas City Royals over the Chicago White Sox.

KC did win at Toronto 1-0 yesterday as they look to stay relevant in the A.L. Wild Card race. Problem is, the Royals are still 3 1/2 games behind Minnesota, and there are only 10 games left in which to track down the Twins.

The Royals have gone 29-14 their last 43 games played on the White Sox diamond, and they catch Chicago on a 2-4 slide their last 6 games played.

Jason Hammel and Reynaldo Lopez will be your Friday night starters, and Hammel has not been on top of his game of late, dropping his last pair of starts in ugly fashion.

Lopez makes his 7th start this season, and his third against Kansas City. Reynaldo has had KC's number, and has won his last pair of starts heading into this weekend set.

Still, I look for the Royals to make one last push at catching Minnesota for the last Wild Card spot, and I will back them tonight.

    1* KANSAS CITY

    RAY MONOHAN

    Oakland -127

AL West foes battle and Oakland here has value at this low juice.
Nick Martinez gets the ball for the Rangers and he enters play with a 5.47 ERA. Martinez has bounced from the bullpen to the starting rotation here in the month of September, which is not the most ideal situation. Martinez has let up 4 runs in each of his last 2 outings, one of which was just 0.2 innings out of the pen.
This Athletics team has been playing hard all season long and they put up 4.6 runs per game. This team is anything but a pushover and should have a lot of success here against Martinez given how aggressive they are.
Some trends to note. Rangers are 0-4 in Martinezs last 4 starts vs. American League West. Rangers are 0-5 in Martinezs last 5 starts.
Texas has struggled when Martinez is on the mound, plain and simple.
    Back Oakland.
    Good Luck, Razor Ray.

    Utah vs. Arizona
    Utah-3½ -105

Utah/Arizona 10:30: Utah's strong run-stop-unit (allowing 49.3 YPG) will be tested against the explosive Arizona run game led by versatile QB Brandon Dawkins. We'll look for Utah's defense to be up for the challenge. They're allowing 245 YPG on a stingy 3.8 YPP. Not sure can say the same about Arizona's defense which allows 401 YPG on 5.7 YPP. Arizona has lost the recruiting battle for the last few years and the quality of star athlete has diminished. Utah the better team here with QB Tyler Huntley running the show with go-to WR Carrington. Utah's a sweet 14-3 ATS on the road against teams with winning records. And they've covered the last 4 road games. Arizona a mere 7-15 ATS in their last 22 home tilts and just 5-11 ATS in September. Tread lightly though: Arizona has covered 4 of the last 5 in this series.

    Friday, September 22

Friday's NCAAF Game of the Day: Virginia at Boise State

Virginia Cavaliers at Boise State Broncos (-13, 51.5)

Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert seeks an encore performance after a record-setting effort last week when he leads the Cavaliers into a Friday night matchup at Boise State, which trounced Virginia two seasons ago in Charlottesville. Benkert threw for a school-record 455 yards in a 38-18 win against Connecticut last Saturday, displaying an aggressive approach the team will need to succeed under the lights in Boise.

"The (blue) turf is one thing, but the style of play," Cavaliers coach Bronco Mendenhall told reporters. "Boise is always really aggressive at the beginning of the game. ... You have to start fast, and you have to be really resilient, especially early, to play well there." Mendenhall lost twice at Albertsons Stadium while coaching at BYU and he's seen footage of the Broncos' 56-14 rout in Virginia on Sept. 25, 2015. The current unit in Boise State rebounded from a triple-overtime loss to Washington State by producing a 28-14 win over New Mexico in its Mountain West Conference opener Sept. 14. Senior Montell Cozart stepped into the starting role in place of Brett Rypien and threw for two touchdowns while running for another as the Broncos survived an uncharacteristically sluggish effort that produced just 264 total yards.

    TV:
    8 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

    LINE HISTORY:
Boise State opened as 13-point home favorites and the total hit the betting board at 51.5. Neither number has moved as of Thursday night.

    INJURY REPORT:

Virginia - WR J. Reed (Probable, Undisclosed), CB T. Harris (Out For Season, Wrist), WR C. Blackman (Out For Season, Leg).

Boise State - TE C. Blakley (Questionable, Leg), NT D. Moa (Questionable, Personal), DE A. Silsby (Questionable, Undisclosed), QB B. Rypien (Questionable, Head), WR A. Bulter (Out For Season, Knee), LB B. Whitlock (Out For Season, Shoulder), S E. Tyler (Out For Season, Knee).

    ABOUT VIRGINIA (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS, 1-2 O/U):
Three different receivers had at least 122 yards and a touchdown last week, led by Doni Dowling (136 yards). Benkert completed 30-of-40 passes and enters this week's action fourth among ACC quarterbacks in completion percentage (66.2) while sitting third in both yards per game (325.3) and TD passes (seven). Junior running back Jordan Ellis had a season-high 95 yards on the ground and found the end zone for the third straight game.

    ABOUT BOISE STATE (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS, 1-2 O/U):
Rypien (undisclosed injury) had a streak of 25 consecutive starts snapped last week, a run that started when he threw for 321 yards and three TDs at Virginia two season ago. "He's practicing, he'll practice today and we'll see where he's at through practice," Broncos coach Bryan Harsin told reporters Monday. "He's back out there, threw some last week." Both Rypien and Cozart have leaned heavily on senior wideout Cedrick Wilson (16 catches, 276 yards), while senior tight end Jake Roh matched his career total with three touchdowns (one rushing) against New Mexico.

    TRENDS:

    * Cavaliers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
    * Broncos are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 home games.
    * Under is 10-4-1 in Cavaliers last 15 road games.
    * Under is 12-3 in Broncos last 15 home games.

    CONSENSUS:
The road underdog Cavaliers are getting 58 percent of the action from users and the Over is picking up 53 percent of the totals wagers.

Two National League central teams will start a weekend series live From the City of Steel. The last time these two teams played it was the Cardinals sweeping the series at home, September 8th through the 10th, but this game will be different.

Pitching could be a problem for the Cardinals in this game as Wacha struggled in his last outing against the Cubs and doesn't seem to be able to pitch well at PNC Park.

Pirates steal this one at home.

My free play for Friday night is on the Kansas City Royals laying a cheap price on the road against the Chicago White Sox. And in this game I want you listing both scheduled starting pitchers: Jason Hammel and Reynaldo Lopez.

I know Lopez is looking to make it three straight starts with a victory, when he makes his seventh start of the year, but I think he gets hit hard tonight. The 23-year-old right-hander earned a win against these same Royals on Sept. 11, when he allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings in Kansas City.

This is a revenge game, as Hammel is looking to bounce back from a pair of tough outings against these White Sox and the Cleveland Indians. Spanning a combined 9.1 innings, Hammel was tagged for 12 runs - 11 of them earned - on 21 hits. With the Royals' playoff hopes dwindling, and wins a necessity more than ever, I think the right-hander is going to get his revenge.

    4* ROYALS (Hammel over Lopez)

CFL Betting Notes - Week 14
    David Schwab

The Saskatchewan Roughriders got back to their winning ways last Friday with 27-19 victory against Hamilton as three-point road favorites to kickoff action in Week 13 of the CFL season.

In the first of two games on Saturday, Toronto successfully defended its home turf as a four-point underdog in a 34-26 win over Edmonton. It was the Eskimos fifth straight-up loss in a row.

Calgary extended its current SU winning streak to eight games with Saturday’s 27-13 victory against British Columbia as a nine-point home favorite. The weekend’s betting action came to a close on Sunday with Ottawa hammering Montreal 29-11 in a game that closed as a PICK.

    Friday, Sept. 22

Ottawa RedBlacks (5-7-1 SU, 9-4 ATS) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-3 SU, 8-3 ATS)

    Point-spread: Winnipeg -6.5
    Total: 56

    Game Overview

The RedBlacks lost a tough one to Winnipeg at home in early August 33-30 in a game they were favored to win by 3 ½ points. Ottawa is a perfect 4-0 against the spread when closing as an underdog as opposed to a 2-4 record ATS when closing as a favorite. Drew Tate got the start at quarterback on Sunday for an injured Trevor Harris and he ended the game completing 21 of his 29 passing attempts for 185 yards and a score. Ryan Lindley also saw action when Tate was injured towards the end of the first half.

The well-rested Blue Bombers are coming off a bye following a home-and-home split against Saskatchewan in their previous two games. Going back to 33-25 victory against Toronto on July 13, Winnipeg has been able to score at least 33 points in eight of its last nine games. Matt Nichols has led the way in the passing game with 3,287 yards and 22 touchdown throws and Andrew Harris has the third-most rushing yards in the CFL with 656.

    Betting Trends

-- The road team in this inter-division clash has won the last four meetings both SU and ATS. The total went OVER 57 ½ points in the first meeting after staying UNDER in three of the previous four meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-9 SU, 4-7 ATS) vs. British Columbia Lions (6-6 SU, 5-6-1 ATS)
    Point-spread: BC -11.5
    Total: 51.5

    Game Overview

Hamilton’s brief two-game winning streak (SU and ATS) came to an end last week. Jeremiah Masoli put the ball up 48 times against Saskatchewan and he completed 28 passes for 328 yards and a score, but he was also picked off twice. He added another 62 yards on the ground to average 6.9 yards a carry. The Tiger-Cats’ defense gave up more than 22 points for the first time in three games.

The Lions have just one SU victory in their last five games while going 1-3-1 ATS during that same span. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of the five games. BC’s offense struggled against Calgary last week with just 167 yards through the air and 77 yards on the ground. Jonathon Jennings was back under center last week after losing his starting role to an injured Travis Lulay, who is out for the season with a knee injury.

    Betting Trends

-- BC brings a four-game winning streak both SU and ATS in this inter-division series after knocking off Hamilton 41-26 on July 15 as a 3 ½-point road favorite. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings.

    Virginia at Boise St
    Play: Under 51.5

Do you think Virginia remembers their throttling against Boise State the last time they played in 2015 by a score of 14-56? It was ugly. Note, Virginia's strength is their defense, which is ranked 45th in the nation in total yards and top 30 in passing yards allowed. They struggle in containing the run, which means that Boise State likely will do just that and chew up clock. This is the reason why this total is so low because Virginia is going to play quality defense likely here as they do not want to be embarrassed again and defense will be the strongest element of their gameplan here in containing Boise State. Note that Boise State also gave up more than 40 points to Washington State, their last quality opponent, and they understand they have to contain Virginia's top 30 passing attack. This means Boise State will probably allow Virginia to run the ball more and eat up clock as well. And, Boise State is aware that if they have any chance in this game that they need to play quality defense unlike what they did against their last quality opponent. This is also a great public fade as well as the public is on the Over on the late game, which typically bodes trouble. The Under is 10-4-1 for the Cavs in their last 15 road games and the Under is 12-3 for the Broncos in their last 15 home games.
