    Preview: Penn State at Iowa

    Gracenote
    Sep 20, 2017

No. 4 Penn State faces a major test in its first road game of the season when it visits fellow unbeaten Iowa on Saturday night in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The Nittany Lions steamrolled through their first three opponents at home by a combined score of 141-14, and their bevy of offensive stars shined brightly in last week's rout of Georgia State.

Trace McSorley threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns while running back Saquon Barkley amassed 226 total yards - including a career-high 142 through the air - and the defense pitched its second shutout. Barkley is averaging 8.1 yards per carry, 21.9 per catch and 26.8 per kickoff return, presenting the Hawkeyes with a unique challenge that has coach Kirk Ferentz scrambling for superlatives. "I'm trying to think of the last time we played a back like this," Ferentz told reporters. "I'm thinking of the backs I've seen in my time in the conference. ... He just does so many things well. He's a powerful, strong, fast athlete. He's a really good football player. Run, pass, you name it, he's a threat. He's just a really impressive football player." The Hawkeyes also have a workhorse at running back in Akrum Wadley (60 carries, second in the Big Ten) and Nathan Stanley's 10 TD passes are first in the league, one ahead of McSorley.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Penn State -12.5

ABOUT PENN STATE (3-0): McSorley is 10th in the country in passing efficiency (184.1), has increased his completion percentage (67.1) nearly 10 points from last season, is gaining six yards a carry and now has even more support in the form of versatile backup Tommy Stevens, who has passing, running and receiving scores through the first three games. "What's nice about [Stevens] is he can play like a receiver, he can play like a running back, he can play like a quarterback, and we've used him in almost all of those ways," coach James Franklin told reporters. "I don't think there's any doubt that it creates stress on a defense." Franklin also has to be pleased with the emergence of big-play receiver Saeed Blacknall, who was held without a catch in the first two games but had 64 receiving yards and a score against Georgia State.

ABOUT IOWA (3-0): Since throwing an interception on the Hawkeyes' second drive of the season, Stanley has thrown his 10 TDs without a pick and is completing 61.4 percent of his passes. Wadley, who had 234 yards through the first two games before sitting out much of last week's 31-14 win over North Texas with an ankle injury, has been practicing and is expected to play Saturday. Iowa ranks 12th among Big Ten teams with 3.8 yards a rush, a troubling trend given the fact that it was outgained 359-30 on the ground in last year's 41-14 loss at Penn State.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Hawkeyes WR Nick Easley is tied for third in the Big Ten with 16 receptions while Wadley ranks second with 25.3 yards per catch.

    2. Nittany Lions WR DaeSean Hamilton has 170 career receptions, nine shy of the school's all-time leader (Deon Butler, 2005-08).

    3. Penn State has won three straight meetings after losing eight of the previous nine.

    Preview: Florida at Kentucky

    Gracenote
    Sep 20, 2017

Fresh off their dramatic last-second 26-20 triumph over Tennessee, 22nd-ranked Florida heads to Kentucky on Saturday for their first SEC road game of the season. The Wildcats come off their fourth straight victory over South Carolina, but they are on the wrong end of the streak this time around as the Gators have won the last 30 meetings with Kentucky, the longest active win streak in the NCAA.

For Kentucky, toppling Florida would more than end 30 years of futility, it would be the beginning of earning respect in the SEC. "There's always the steps that we need to take to push forward," Wildcats coach Mark Stoops said at his weekly press conference. "We don't dodge those. We embrace those challenges and we'll do the very best we can." But while Kentucky may be playing with a chip on its shoulder, Florida has something to prove as well after two very flawed performances this season. The Gators have high hopes that Feleipe Franks' 63-yard game-winning touchdown pass to Tyrie Cleveland as time expired against Tennessee will give the team momentum and jumpstart an offense that has had its up and downs with a redshirt freshman quarterback at the helm. Both teams may be missing key defenders as Florida cornerback Duke Dawson and Kentucky linebacker Jordan Jones appear unlikely to suit up.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Florida -3

ABOUT FLORIDA (1-1, 1-0 SEC): Before connecting with Cleveland for the play of the game against Tennessee, Franks (18-for-28, 212 yards, two touchdowns, one interception) was not having a day to remember, missing "six critical plays," according to coach Jim McElwain. Franks was held in check most of the afternoon with short play calls but he will likely have to go downfield more this week unless the Gators -- already hampered by the absence of their top runner Jordan Scarlett, one of nine Gators still under suspension -- can find holes in a Wildcats' defense that doesn't give up much on the ground. The Gators defense wore down in the fourth quarter against Tennessee, giving up 231 yards (10.5 yards per play) after allowing just 211 yards and three points in the first three quarters.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (3-0, 1-0): Dual-threat quarterback Stephen Johnson will give a Gators' defense that has had problems with shoddy tackling something to think about, as he threw for 169 yards and ran for another 74 against South Carolina, including a 54-yard scramble. Kentucky wound up amassing 219 yards rushing, although starting tailback Benny Snell Jr., averaged just 3.2 yards on his 32 carries (102 yards). The Wildcats' staunch run defense has made opponents one-dimensional this season, limiting them to an SEC-low 57 yards rushing per game.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Florida hasn't rushed for a touchdown since its victory over Georgia last Oct. 29, a stretch of eight games.

    2. Kentucky is looking to go 4-0 for the first time since 2008.

    3. Kentucky is 10-4 since its 45-7 loss at Florida in Week 2 last season.

    Preview: Auburn at Missouri

    Gracenote
    Sep 20, 2017

Auburn has had a tough time getting things clicking on offense the past two games, but a trip to face a struggling Missouri defense on Saturday might provide just the remedy. No. 16 Auburn aims to open conference play with a road victory when the two Tigers tangle for the first time since the 2013 SEC Championship game.

Auburn suffered a bit of a hangover last Saturday after a disappointing 14-6 loss to No. 2 Clemson the previous week, as the Tigers had a tough time putting away Mercer for a 24-10 win. Auburn has a perfect opportunity to get things right on offense against a Missouri team that ranks last in the SEC in total defense (442.7 yards per game) and has surrendered at least 30 points in each of its first three contests. "Obviously, we're about to go on a long run with all the SEC teams, so it's going to be a challenge each week,” Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham told reporters. “Our defense, they're playing lights out. Hats off to them. They're truly a great defense. I know offensively, we just want to help a little bit more.” Missouri fired defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross after two games but continued to struggle in every facet of the game in a 35-3 loss to visiting Purdue last week.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU. LINE: Auburn -19.5

ABOUT AUBURN (2-1, 0-0 SEC): Auburn moved the ball at will against Mercer, outgaining the Bears 510-246, but five turnovers kept the Tigers from pulling away. Stidham picked apart Mercer’s secondary, going 32-for-37 for 364 yards, and should have similar success against a struggling Missouri defense. Auburn has had no such troubles on defense, allowing only 3.18 yards per play - best in the nation - and a total of 605 yards through three games.
ABOUT MISSOURI (1-2, 0-1): Missouri’s defense has been dismal, and the offense followed suit against Purdue. The Tigers gained only 203 total yards against the Boilermakers, and they’ve totaled 16 points in the past two games after a 72-43 win over Missouri State in their opener. Quarterback Drew Lock passed for 521 yards and seven touchdowns against Missouri State, but has totaled just 378 yards and one touchdown with four interceptions over the past two contests.

    EXTRA POINTS
    1. Auburn RB Kerryon Johnson is expected to play after missing the past two games with a hamstring injury.
    2. Missouri has allowed 2.67 tackles for loss per game (fourth-fewest nationally) and 0.67 sacks per game (tied for ninth-fewest in the nation).
    3. Auburn is the only team in the nation ranked in the top 12 in total defense (second), scoring defense (11th), and passing defense (ninth).

Preview: Notre Dame at Michigan State

    Gracenote
    Sep 21, 2017

Michigan State looks to return from a week off and resume the momentum of a 2-0 start when it hosts long-time rival Notre Dame on Saturday night. The Spartans earned home victories over Bowling Green and Western Michigan prior to a bye week, while the Irish are coming off a victory over Boston College last weekend.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio would love to see his running game have the kind of dominant performance it had against the Irish last year, when the Spartans held the ball for 37:57 in the contest and amassed 260 yards on 52 carries. To do that, running back LJ Scott (125 yards, one TD) needs to improve on his early performance this season, as the Spartans are currently led in rushing by quarterback Brian Lewerke (151). The Michigan State offensive front will also have to handle an improving Notre Dame defense, which has held opponents to 151.7 rushing yards a contest and has notched six sacks this season, compared to 14 for all of last season. Offensively, the Irish like the ground game as well, with running back Josh Adams (443 yards, two TDs, 7.9 yards per carry) and quarterback Brandon Wimbush (314, six, 6.4) both averaging more than 100 yards a game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET. FOX. LINE: Notre Dame -4

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (2-1): Wimbush was expected to be a strong quarterback for coach Brian Kelly in his first season as the starter under center, but even Kelly likely didn't predict how good the junior could be so early. Wimbush became the first QB in Notre Dame history to put together a 200-yard rushing performance with his 207 against Boston College, and he was the first Irish player to score four rushing touchdowns since October 1994 and the first quarterback to accomplish the feat. But Kelly still thinks of Wimbush as a passer first, and he's expecting to put WImbush in more of a position to use his arm than his legs in the next few weeks.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (2-0): The Michigan State defense has been outstanding to start the season, not allowing a single offensive touchdown in the first two games and leading FBS schools in third-down defense (10.7-percent conversion rate). But Wimbush provides a new challenge for the Spartans in that he is a QB who can run as well, if not better, than he passes. Because of that, Michigan State defensive players have talked about needing to play more containment and keep Wimbush in the pocket rather than taking shots at him that might miss, allowing him to get out into the open field.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Michigan State ranks second among opponents in all-time victories (29) over Notre Dame, trailing only USC (37).

    2. Notre Dame is 15-of-15 in scoring in the red zone this season, tied with 19 other teams in the FBS, but has the most red-zone opportunities of those teams.

    3. Lewerke ranks fourth in the Big Ten in total offense, averaging 280.5 yards a contest.

    Preview: Southern Illinois at Memphis

    Gracenote
    Sep 21, 2017

Memphis looks to build on its big win over then-nationally ranked UCLA when it hosts FCS school Southern Illinois in a Saturday-night matchup. The Tigers won a 48-45 shootout last Saturday with the Bruins 48-45 to improve to start 2-0 for the third straight season.

Quarterback Riley Ferguson has been garnering national headlines after his performance against the Bruins, when he threw for 398 yards and six touchdowns. The passing game of the Tigers is augmented by a running game that is powered by sophomore running backs Darrell Henderson (274 rushing yards) and Patrick Taylor Jr. (177) and has nearly half of the team’s offensive yards this season (495 passing-481 rushing). What has been the down side so far for Memphis has been the defense, which allows 37 points and 371 passing yards per game. The Salukis are 2-0 thanks to a balanced offense that is averaging 45 points and a defense that has allowed a total of 20 points on the season.

    TV: 8 p.m. ET. ESPN3

ABOUT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (2-0): Defense has been the name of the game for the Salukis, as the team has gone from allowing 30.7 points and 433.1 yards per game in 2016 to 10 and 289, respectively, this season. Senior safety Ryan Neal was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week after recording an interception, recovering a fumble and tying for the team lead with eight tackles in a win over Southeast Missouri State last weekend. Southern Illinois ranks 12th in FCS in both total turnovers forced (7) and turnovers forced per game (3.5) -- something they’ll definitely need when facing the high-powered Memphis offense.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (2-0): Turnovers have been a big part of the Tigers’ early success, with Memphis forcing seven in the first two contests. Coach Mike Norvell’s club finished fifth in the nation with 29 takeaways a year ago, and the opportunistic defense has forced two or more turnovers in nine of 15 games under the second-year coach. Linebacker Tim Hart returned his first career interception for a touchdown against UCLA, continuing a trend that saw the Tigers tie for 10th in the country with three interception returns for a score a year ago.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Henderson ranks second in the nation with his 10.5 yards per carry.

    2. Five different players have caught the six touchdown passes thrown by Ferguson, with leading receiver Anthony Miller (11 catches, 208 yards) the only one with two.

    3. Memphis TE Joey Magnifico tripled his career best in catches with six against UCLA and more than tripled his previous high in receiving yards with 83.

PREDICTION: Memphis 42, Southern Illinois 20

    Preview: Oregon at Arizona State

    Gracenote
    Sep 20, 2017

Arizona State has lost two of its first three games for the first time since 1999, and the schedule won't get any easier when the Sun Devils host No. 24 Oregon in the Pac-12 opener for both teams on Saturday night. The Ducks have won 10 straight games against the Sun Devils and are 3-0 this season, though their best win against Nebraska was watered down when the Cornhuskers lost at home to Northern Illinois the following week.

Arizona State's defense needs to develop methods to get off the field quicker. The Sun Devils are last among 129 FBS teams in third down efficiency with opposing offenses converting 24-of-44 opportunities this season for a 54.5-percent success rate. Oregon lost one of its top third down targets when wide receiver Charles Nelson left with a right ankle injury in the first half against Wyoming on Saturday. Nelson, who has shined at offense, defense and special teams in his four-year career with the Ducks, was the team's top pass catcher last season with 52 grabs for 554 yards and four touchdowns.

    TV: 10 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: Oregon -16.

ABOUT OREGON (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12): The Ducks still have one of the top running backs in the conference to lean on, so look for Royce Freeman to set the tone early in the ground game. He has rushed 150 yards or better, averaged at least 5.2 yards a carry in all three games this season and scored nine touchdowns, putting him well on course for a third 1,000-yard season. Oregon can rest Freeman at times without fearing a quick three-and-out, as senior Kani Benoit is averaging 10 yards on his 16 carries and has already scored six touchdowns.
ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (1-2, 0-0): The Sun Devils might have an extra tough time stopping Oregon, as their top pass rusher, Koron Crump, left last week's loss at Texas Tech with a knee injury and is doubtful to play this week. If this game turns into another shootout, as it did in the 52-45 loss to Texas Tech, quarterback Manny Wilkins will need to perform even better than he did last week when he completed 27-of-41 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Wilkins has seven touchdown passes this season and no interceptions, so he's done his part to avoid giving the opposing team a short field.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Arizona State is averaging 3.3 penalties per game, third-lowest in the nation.

    2. The Sun Devils are giving up an average of 338 passing yards a game, seventh-most in the nation.

    3. Oregon QB Justin Herbert owns the sixth-best quarterback rating in the nation at 88.5, nearly 12 points better than preseason All-American Sam Darnold of USC.

    Preview: Washington at Colorado

    Gracenote
    Sep 20, 2017

Sixth-ranked Washington finally gets to measure itself against a strong opponent when it visits Colorado on Saturday in the Pac-12 opener for both schools. The Huskies weren't tested while opening with victories over Rutgers, Montana and Fresno State while the Buffaloes are looking for their first 4-0 start since 1998.

Washington routed Colorado 41-10 in last season's Pac-12 title game and Huskies coach Chris Petersen insists that doesn't matter. "It's not that I want them to remember or forget, has nothing to do with that," Petersen said. "I've said this many times: The lessons that we've learned, good and bad, from last year's season, we always want that to carry over so we can learn. But this is a completely new season, early in the year, completely different energies and rhythms." The Buffaloes are looking to keep Washington senior Dante Pettis (three punt return scores) in check after he matched the NCAA career record of eight punt return touchdowns -- tying Texas Tech's Wes Welker (2000-03) and Oklahoma's Antonio Perkins (2001-04) -- and tied the record of scores in three consecutive games (Kansas State's David Allen in 1998 and North Carolina's Ryan Switzer in 2013) with a 77-yard touchdown return in last Saturday's victory over Fresno State. "He's a guy we have to know where he is on the field, offensively and punt returns," said Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre, who recalled Pettis' 87-yard scoring return in 2014 against his team. "We're working hard at that and hopefully we can corral him."

    TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS1. LINE: Washington -11.

ABOUT WASHINGTON (3-0): Junior quarterback Jake Browning has completed 74.4 percent of his passes this season for 798 yards and eight touchdowns against one interception but was shut down by the Buffaloes in last season's Pac-12 title game, when he went 9-of-24 passing for 118 yards, though he did throw two touchdown passes. "I played awful against them last year in the Pac-12 championship," Browning told reporters. "That's something that I remember but I don't think it motivates me more. If you always need stuff to motivate you, you won't play well in all the games." Senior inside linebacker Kieshawn Bierria has seven career fumble recoveries, one shy of the school mark shared by three players.

ABOUT COLORADO (3-0): Sophomore quarterback Steven Montez (858 yards, six touchdowns) is developing fast as a first-year starter and passed for 357 yards and four touchdowns in last Saturday's 41-21 victory over Northern Colorado. Senior wideout Shay Fields (19 receptions for 257 yards) ranks fourth in school history with 163 career receptions while senior tailback Phillip Lindsay (378 rushing yards, three scores) became the ninth player in school history to reach 25 career rushing touchdowns. Junior inside linebacker Drew Lewis (team-best 35 tackles) is the first Colorado player with 10 or more tackles in each of his first three career starts since former standout Greg Biekert did it four straight times in 1990.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Washington leads the series 10-5-1 and has won the past seven meetings.

    2. Buffaloes junior P Alex Kinney has punted 15 times and only two have been returned -- for nine total yards.

    3. Huskies junior RB Myles Gaskin has just 153 rushing yards after topping 1,300 in each of his first two seasons.
