    Preview: Ohio State at Rutgers

    Gracenote
    Sep 27, 2017

Ninth-ranked Ohio State hopes to continue its offensive resurgence against an improving defense when the Buckeyes visit Rutgers for a Big Ten clash on Saturday afternoon. Ohio State averaged 625 yards while winning its last two games against non-conference opponents and expects a much tougher battle against a Scarlet Knights’ defense that is holding teams to 18.3 points per contest.

“You can see Chris Ash’s fundamentals on it, and also scheme,” Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said of his former defensive coordinator (2014-15), who is now the Rutgers head coach. “Most improved defense I’ve seen in the country this year.” The Scarlet Knights gave No. 6 Washington and Nebraska all they could handle in losses, but may have their toughest challenge against an Ohio State offense that is led by senior quarterback J.T. Barrett and freshman running back J.K. Dobbins. Barrett has thrown for 966 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception while Dobbins is averaging 7.5 yards per carry, 130 per game and faces a Rutgers defense that is giving up 118.8 yards per contest with just one touchdown against on the ground. The Scarlet Knights must improve offensively and should get a boost from the return of senior wide receiver Janarion Grant, who missed last week’s 27-17 loss at Nebraska with a concussion.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Ohio State -29.5

OHIO STATE (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten): Barrett completed 37-of-50 passes with seven scoring strikes and zero interceptions in victories over Army (38-7) and UNLV (54-21) the last two weeks and eight different players have caught a touchdown pass for the Buckeyes. Dobbins (520 yards, three TDs) is expected to get help from sophomore running back Mike Weber, who Meyer said is cleared to play after being bothered by a hamstring injury that has limited him to seven carries after he rushed for 1,096 yards last year. Defensive tackle Malik Barrow (knee) was lost for the season in the UNLV contest, but linebacker Chris Worley (foot) is probable for Rutgers after missing last Saturday’s contest.

RUTGERS (1-3, 0-1): The Scarlet Knights are allowing just under 300 yards per game and boast five interceptions as junior linebacker Trevor Morris leads the way with 28 tackles while senior defensive end Darnell Davis has two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. Louisville transfer Kyle Bolin has yet to throw for 200 yards in a game this year and the senior owns three touchdown passes as opposed to six interceptions, but having Grant (12 catches, 113 yards, one TD) back should help. Senior running back Gus Edwards has provided 259 yards on the ground (4.2 per carry) and junior tight end Jerome Washington (15 receptions, 135 yards) is Bolin’s top target in the early going.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Barrett is 14 shy of 10,000 yards of total offense in his career and needs 201 passing yards to move ahead of Art Schlichter (7,547) for the school record.

    2. The Buckeyes have won the first three matchups with Rutgers by a combined score of 163-24 and took the battle in Columbus 58-0 last year.

    3. Grant needs 107 all-purpose yards to move past Brian Leonard (4,643) for third on the Scarlet Knights’ all-time list.

    Preview: Clemson at Virginia Tech

    Gracenote
    Sep 28, 2017

Defending national champion Clemson has passed a few early tests already but will face their biggest one yet on Saturday. The second-ranked Tigers put their school-record 11-game road winning streak on the line when they visit No. 12 Virginia Tech in an ACC showdown between unbeaten teams.

Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente knows his team’s margin for error is next to nothing against the Tigers, who are explosive on offense and dominant on defense. "It's like defusing a bomb,” Fuente told reporters. “Like one small snip of the wire that's incorrect and, 'Boom!' You blow your hands off. That's how talented and how good they are." Clemson already has beaten two ranked opponents, holding off Auburn in a defensive struggle and routing Louisville on the road, and pulled away in the fourth quarter of a 34-7 win over Boston College last week. The Hokies survived a tough test in a 31-24 win over West Virginia to open the season but have coasted past inferior competition over the last three weeks.

    TV: 8 p.m., ABC. LINE: Clemson -7.5.

ABOUT CLEMSON (4-0, 2-0 ACC): The Tigers boast one of the nation’s best defenses, ranking third nationally in total defense (227 yards per game) and scoring defense (9.2 points) despite a challenging early schedule. The offense has been remarkably consistent as well, considering all Clemson lost at the skill positions. Quarterback Kelly Bryant has been terrific, passing for 873 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 268 yards and seven scores, and freshman running back Travis Etienne (292 yards, four TDs) averages 12.7 yards per carry.
ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (4-0): The Hokies have long been regarded for their stellar defense and special-teams work, but they’re putting up huge offensive numbers so far this season. Redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson has been superb, completing 65.2 percent of his passes for 1,127 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception, albeit against weak competition. Jackson has a tremendous weapon in receiver Cam Phillips, who has recorded 34 receptions for 523 yards and five touchdowns through four contests.

    EXTRA POINTS
    1. Clemson has won four straight over Virginia Tech following the latter's five-game winning streak in the series.
    2. Virginia Tech K Joey Slye needs 12 points to surpass Shayne Graham (371 points) as the program’s all-time leading scorer.
    3. Clemson has won 38 straight contests and is 42-1 under Dabo Swinney when rushing for at least 200 yards.

Preview: South Carolina at Texas A&M

    Gracenote
    Sep 28, 2017

Host Texas A&M and South Carolina haven’t inspired much confidence among their fanbases early in the season, but one of them will pick up a key SEC victory when they square off Saturday. The Aggies have won each of their previous three meetings, including a 24-13 victory at South Carolina last season.

The Aggies are an epic second-half collapse against UCLA away from being undefeated, but they haven’t made things easy on themselves. They were tied entering the fourth quarter against Nicholls State, trailed at halftime versus UL Lafayette and eked out a 50-43 overtime win over Arkansas last week. The optimism that arose from South Carolina’s 2-0 start has been tempered after its last two games – a 23-13 home loss to Kentucky and a 17-16 triumph over visiting Louisiana Tech. The Gamecocks can regain the positive mindset with their first win in four meetings with the Aggies, which would give them their first 4-1 start since 2013.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Texas A&M -8

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (3-1, 1-1 SEC): The Gamecocks’ offense has faltered since star receiver Deebo Samuel was lost to a fractured left leg against Kentucky as it was shut out for three quarters last week. The defense kept South Carolina in the game until quarterback Jake Bentley and running back Ty’Son Williams got the offense going. The Gamecocks also have struggled in the kicking game, but redshirt freshman walk-on kicker Parker White - who was a walk-on - made his first successful field goal count last week as he booted a 31-yarder to beat Louisiana Tech.
ABOUT TEXAS A&M (3-1, 1-0): The Aggies are prone to playing in shootouts – they average 40.8 points but give up 30.8 per contest. Freshman quarterback Kellen Mond has been solid, passing for 649 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions, but Texas A&M’s strength has been the ground game, which is led by Trayveon Williams (328 yards, four touchdowns) and Keith Ford (232, five). The Aggies also have leaned on their defense’s ball-hawking nature, as it has forced 11 turnovers thus far.

    EXTRA POINTS
    1. South Carolina is 1-4 all-time in the state of Texas, with the only win being a 27-21 triumph over Texas in 1957.
    2. Texas A&M S Armani Watts, who clinched the overtime win over Arkansas with an interception in the end zone, is the only FBS player in the nation with at least five tackles for loss, three picks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
    3. The Aggies, who lead the SEC with 3.25 sacks per game, recorded six against Arkansas.

    Preview: Washington at Oregon State

    Gracenote
    Sep 27, 2017

Sixth-ranked Washington has discovered its running game and it looks to remain unbeaten when it visits Oregon State on Saturday in Pac-12 play. Junior running back Myles Gaskin underwhelmed with 153 yards through the first three games before erupting for a career-high 202 in last Saturday's 37-10 victory over Colorado.

Gaskin rushed for over 1,300 yards in each of his first two seasons but talk about his lackluster start evaporated with the superb 27-carry outing against the Buffaloes. "Myles always gets better the more you give him the ball," Washington coach Chris Petersen said. "He'll get into a rhythm if you can give him a little bit of space. I think we took a step forward in the run game." Oregon State is coming off a bye but has been atrocious on the defensive side by allowing 485.5 yards and 47.5 points per game, the latter ranking 126th nationally out of 129 FBS teams. "I don't believe we've represented ourselves the way that we should as a football team as a whole," Beavers coach Gary Andersen said. "And that's just not the wins and the losses. That's the overall package. That is extremely frustrating to me and we've talked about that."

    TV: 8 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: Washington -26.5

ABOUT WASHINGTON (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12): Junior quarterback Jake Browning has passed for 958 yards and nine touchdowns against two interceptions and will look to expose an Oregon State defense that has already allowed 12 touchdown passes. Senior receiver Dante Pettis leads the team with 15 receptions for 263 yards and has three punt return touchdowns to match the NCAA career record of eight punt return scores -- tying Texas Tech's Wes Welker (2000-03) and Oklahoma's Antonio Perkins (2001-04). The Huskies are allowing just 100.3 rushing yards per game and are limiting foes to a stingy 2.7 yards per carry, and senior inside linebacker Azeem Victor had a season-best 10 tackles against Colorado in his top effort of the campaign.

ABOUT OREGON STATE (1-3, 0-1): Senior quarterback Darell Garretson will make his first start of the season -- and 18th of his career -- after junior Jake Luton suffered a spinal injury in the Beavers' most-recent game, Sept. 16 at Washington State. Junior running back Ryan Nall has rushed for 323 yards, topping 100 yards twice to raise his career count in that category to eight. The defense has allowed 48 or more points in each of the three defeats with freshman safety David Morris (32 tackles) and senior inside linebacker Manase Hungalu (29) rating as the top tacklers.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Washington has won the past five meetings and holds a 62-34-4 series lead.

    2. Beavers senior P Nick Porebski has punted 21 times but only four have been returned for 11 yards.

    3. Huskies junior WR Chico McClatcher (broken ankle) is likely done for the season, while redshirt freshman CB Byron Murphy (foot) will miss at least six weeks.

Preview: Oklahoma State at Texas Tech

    Gracenote
    Sep 27, 2017

No. 14 Oklahoma State was brought back down to earth last week by TCU after three impressive early-season wins had Cowboys fans dreaming of a Big 12 title and possible berth in the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma State looks to get back on track with a ninth straight win against Texas Tech when they visit the Red Raiders on Saturday.

The Cowboys whipped up on Tulsa, South Alabama and Pittsburgh by a combined 110 points during the non-conference slate, but they stumbled at home last week 44-31 to then-No. 15 TCU. Meanwhile, Texas Tech forced five turnovers in its 27-24 win over Houston last week, and are second in FBS in turnover margin (plus 2.3 per game). "That's the key to our conference. You look at the teams that have won the league the last few years and they're way up there in the turnover margin, and that's where we're trying to get to give (ourselves) a chance in every game in the Big 12", Red Raiders coach Kliff Kingsbury told the media this week. In last year’s contest, Texas Tech rallied from a second half, double-digit deficit only to lose 45-44 on a missed extra point with 1:44 left in the game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Fox. LINE: Oklahoma State -9.5

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (3-1, 0-1 Big 12): Mason Rudolph threw for 398 yards against the Horned Frogs but tossed two interceptions and lost a fumble, dashing his early-season push for the Heisman Trophy. The senior is completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,533 yards with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. Wide receiver James Washington has 19 grabs for 520 yards and four TDs, averaging 27.4 yards per catch, while running backs Justice Hill (352 yards) and J.D. King (201 yards) combine to average nearly six yards per carry.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (3-0, 0-0): The Red Raiders are ninth in scoring in FBS (45 points per game) and third in total offense (587.3), and its defense is yielding only 26.3 points – 17.2 fewer per game than last season's FBS-worst scoring defense. Quarterback Nic Shimonek has completed 92-of-125 passes for 1,248 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception; his 85.9 QBR rank via ESPN is third-best in FBS, behind Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Rudolph. Shimonek threw for 321 yards and two scores against Houston, hooking up with Keke Coutee 11 times for 161 yards.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. In last season’s game, Rudolph passed for 395 yards and two TDs while Hill gained 126 yards on the ground. In 2015, Washington scored on 75 and 73-yard pass receptions in the fourth quarter as the Cowboys rebounded from an early 17-point deficit for a 70-53 win at Texas Tech.

    2. Coutee has 28 catches for 446 yards and four scores, while WRs Dylan Cantrell and Derrick Willies have each topped 200 yards receiving with two scores apiece for the Red Raiders.

    3. Rudolph became the school's all-time leader in total offense (10,250 yards), moving ahead of Zac Robinson, and also set a school record with his fifth consecutive 300-yard passing effort last week.

    Preview: Ole Miss at Alabama

    Gracenote
    Sep 27, 2017

Top-ranked Alabama put forth a dominant effort in its last contest and looks to ride the momentum when it hosts Ole Miss on Saturday in SEC play. The Crimson Tide outgained Vanderbilt 677-76 during a 59-0 trouncing and look to remain unbeaten against the Rebels, who had a bye last weekend.

Alabama set a program record with 38 first downs against Vanderbilt but coach Nick Saban expects a tougher battle against well-rested Ole Miss. "This is a team that has beat us two out of the last three years, and we've played some shootout kind of games with them," Saban said at a press conference. "They've had two really good wins this year. They're fourth nationally in passing, and they make a lot of explosive plays." The Rebels, who are averaging 427 yards per game through the air, average 36 points per game and aim to continue the assault against an Alabama defense tied for fourth in scoring defense (10 points per game) and tied for seventh in total defense (248 yards per game). The Crimson Tide have yet to commit a turnover this season and have gone 30 consecutive quarters without one dating back to last November.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Alabama -28

ABOUT OLE MISS (2-1, 0-0 SEC): Sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson has passed for 1,281 yards and 11 touchdowns against four interceptions through the first three games with his lowest-yardage outing being a 363-yard showing in a loss to California. Sophomore A.J. Brown is the best of the receivers but the player with 16 receptions for 389 yards and four touchdowns is a game-day decision due to a sprained MCL in his left knee. Senior outside linebacker DeMarquis Gates leads the defense with 25 tackles but the unit is waiting for top-notch senior defensive end Marquis Haynes (25 career sacks) to pick up the pace -- he has just half a sack this season.

ABOUT ALABAMA (4-0, 1-0): Sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts has passed for 550 yards and four touchdowns but continues to make his biggest impact as the team's leading rusher with 360 yards. Junior running back Damien Harris has 309 yards and six touchdowns after piling up a career-best 151 against Vanderbilt, while junior receiver Calvin Ridley (20 receptions, 262 yards) is tied for third in school history on the all-time receptions list (179) with current Atlanta Falcons star Julio Jones (2008-10). Junior free safety Ronnie Harrison and senior linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton share the team tackle lead with 20 apiece.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Alabama recorded a 48-43 victory over Ole Miss last season after the Rebels prevailed in each of the previous two seasons.

    2. The Crimson Tide rolled up 496 rushing yards in the demolishment of Vanderbilt.

    3. Rebels junior C Sean Rawlings (left ankle) underwent surgery during the bye week and is unlikely to play.

Preview: Northern Illinois at San Diego State

    Gracenote
    Sep 27, 2017

At 4-0 and ranked No. 21 nationally, San Diego State owns the second-highest rank among teams outside the Power Five. The Aztecs will put that unblemished record and poll position on the line Saturday night when they host Northern Illinois, which will be looking for its second marquee road win after knocking off Nebraska 21-17 two weeks ago in Lincoln.

San Diego State has won 25 of its last 28 games overall, including back-to-back wins over the Pac-12’s Arizona State (30-20) and then-No. 19 Stanford (20-17) earlier this month. And after opening Mountain West play last Saturday with a 28-24 victory at Air Force, the Aztecs are now set for their first home game as a nationally ranked team since 1995. “(Being ranked in the) top 25 is recognition, but at the same time, it’s a target,” San Diego State safety Parker Baldwin said Tuesday. “It’s like a warrant for your arrest – everybody is coming for you – and Northern Illinois is definitely going to want to knock us off, especially after they knocked off Nebraska two weeks ago.” In between, the Mid-American Conference team had a bye week so the Huskies are sure to be rested and ready for their non-conference finale Saturday.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, CBS SportsNet. LINE: San Diego State -11

ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS (2-1): The Huskies opened the season with a narrow 23-20 loss at Boston College but have since followed with a home blowout of FCS foe Eastern Illinois (38-10) and the 21-17 win at Nebraska, in which Northern Illinois returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns in the opening quarter and then scored the winning TD in the fourth after the Cornhuskers had taken a 17-14 lead. Including a win over Kent State last season, sophomore Daniel Santacaterina is 3-0 as the starting quarterback and has completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 380 yards, three scores and an interception since taking over for injured starter Ryan Graham during the loss to Boston College. Defensively, the Huskies have allowed only 50 points, have intercepted six passes and feature the FBS leader in tackles for loss in defensive end Sutton Smith, who has 9.5, including three sacks.
ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (4-0): Senior running back Rashaad Penny notched his fourth straight 100-yard rushing game with 128 yards and a career high-matching three TDs against Air Force and ranks second nationally in rushing yards per game (179.0), all-purpose yards (230.0) and total TDs (nine). Penny’s presence has opened passing windows for quarterback Christian Chapman, who has completed 66.7 percent of his attempts for 660 yards, five scores and one interception. Baldwin (28) and fellow safety Trey Lomax (25) are the leading tacklers for a defense, which ranks in the top 35 nationally in points (19.5), passing (167.3) and total yards (291) allowed while standing 15th with a plus-1.25 average turnover margin.

    EXTRA POINTS
    1. San Diego State has won all five games in the series, including a 42-28 road victory last season in which Donnel Pumphrey ran for 220 yards and three TDs.
    2. The Aztecs are 4-0 for the first time since 1981 and only the second time in the program’s last 42 seasons.
    3. San Diego has won 34 straight games when rushing for 200 or more yards and will be up against a Huskies defense ranked 24th in the FBS at 97.7 yards per game.

    Preview: California at Oregon

    Gracenote
    Sep 27, 2017

Two teams looking to bounce back from Pac-12 opening losses meet Saturday as Oregon faces visiting California, which has played well under new coach Justin Wilcox, a former Ducks player. Cal was tied with USC entering the fourth quarter last Saturday before losing 30-20, while Oregon was 1-for-11 on third-down conversions in a 37-35 loss at Arizona State.

Senior linebacker Devante Downs has recorded 14 tackles in back-to-back games to lead a rejuvenated Cal defense, which has forced 11 turnovers, including six interceptions. “Very impressed,” USC coach Clay Helton told reporters after last week’s game. “The thing that just jumps off the page is their effort and the way they play. They are really becoming a physical football team. You can see that team is developing an identity.” The Bears opened the season with an impressive road win at North Carolina and will be tested again at Oregon, where the Ducks have won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the teams. The Bears will need to slow down an Oregon team that ranks first in the Pac-12 in scoring offense (50.8) behind star Royce Freeman’s 10 rushing touchdowns.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Oregon -13.5

ABOUT CAL (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12): After three sharp performances against North Carolina, Weber State and Ole Miss, sophomore quarterback Ross Bowers took a step back against USC, going 22-for-50 for 303 yards with one touchdown, four interceptions and two lost fumbles. Running back Tre Watson is out for the season with a knee injury, but junior Patrick Laird has been a capable replacement with three consecutive games of 78 or more yards rushing. Downs ranks fifth nationally with 11.5 tackles per game to lead a defense that is allowing 24 points per game after giving up an average of 42.6 points last season.

ABOUT OREGON (3-1, 0-1): The Ducks combined for more penalties (14) and punts (7) than first downs (20) against Arizona State, resulting in the first loss at Oregon for new coach Willie Taggart. Jalen Jelks had nine tackles, three sacks and five tackles for loss against the Sun Devils, but the Ducks’ secondary struggled to contain wide receiver N'Keal Harry, who caught seven passes for 170 yards and a score. Quarterback Justin Herbert engineered last week’s comeback effort by throwing for 281 yards and three scores despite missing one of his favorite targets in wide receiver Charles Nelson, who remains questionable with a sprained ankle.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Oregon’s seven-game winning streak over Cal was snapped with last season’s 52-49 loss.

    2. The Bears are 10-of-13 on 4th-down conversions.

    3. Oregon is averaging 10.5 penalties, which ranks 126th out of 129 Football Bowl Subdivision teams.

    PREDICTION: Oregon 45, Cal 38
