    Preview: Nationals at Cubs

    Gracenote
    Oct 10, 2017

The Chicago Cubs gave Jake Arrieta a few extra days to rest his tender hamstring, and now he’s in a position to help get the team back to the National League Championship Series. Arrieta gets the ball in Game 4 of the NL Division Series on Tuesday as the Cubs look to close out the visiting Washington Nationals.

Anthony Rizzo’s bloop single in the eighth inning plated the go-ahead run Monday as the Cubs posted a 2-1 victory in Game 3 to regain the series lead. Arrieta can close it out as he makes his first start since Sept. 26, and the 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner says his nagging right hamstring injury is a “non-issue.” He hopes to follow the rest of Chicago's starting rotation, which has allowed two runs - one earned - in 18 2/3 innings over the first three games of the series. Tanner Roark, who grew up about an hour’s drive from Wrigley Field, makes the start for the Nationals as they trail in the series despite permitting only eight runs.
    TV: 5:30 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Tanner Roark (13-11, 4.67 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (14-10, 3.53)
Roark made two relief appearances in the 2014 NLDS and received his first postseason start in last year’s NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing two runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision. The 31-year-old had a solid second half but finished the regular season on a sour note, losing his last two turns before giving up two runs in one inning of relief on Oct. 1. Roark is 4-2 with a 4.06 ERA in seven career games (six starts) against the Cubs.
Arrieta is 4-2 with a 3.64 ERA in seven starts over the last two postseasons, including a pair of wins in last year’s World Series. The 31-year-old has been outstanding at home throughout his tenure with the Cubs, going 30-14 with a 2.31 ERA in 59 outings. He hasn’t fared as well against the Nationals, however, as he owns a 1-2 record and 5.48 ERA in nine career meetings.

    WALK-OFFS
    1. Rizzo has hit safely in nine straight postseason games, going 13-for-33 during the streak.
    2. Washington 1B Ryan Zimmerman has driven in four of the Nationals’ seven runs in the series.
    3. Cubs RHP Wade Davis improved to 6-for-6 in save opportunities in the postseason with Monday’s save and has posted a 0.79 ERA in 25 career playoff games.

    PREDICTION: Cubs 4, Nationals 3

    Preview: Blues at Rangers

    Gracenote
    Oct 10, 2017

The New York Rangers shook off two rough performances to post their first victory of the season and hope to make it two straight when they host the unbeaten St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. The Rangers suffered a season-opening home loss to Colorado - the league's worst team last campaign, surrendered eight goals in a setback at Toronto and needed two goals by Montreal to be overturned on Sunday before skating to a 2-0 win.

Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 34 shots for his 62nd career shutout in a game he was not even scheduled to start after being pulled against Toronto, which scored five goals against him in the first period the previous night. “The first two games were pretty much back and forth against two teams that try to go for it all the time, and that’s a little risky,” Lundqvist told reporters. “(On Sunday), I felt like we played more our style. We were more in control and used our speed when there’s an opportunity for it.” The Rangers will have to be just as sharp against the Blues, who defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 in a shootout on Monday as Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice and added another tally in the bonus format. St. Louis, which has started 3-0-0 for the third time in five seasons, has been ravaged by injuries but received balanced scoring and solid defense to beat Pittsburgh and Dallas as well in the early going.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE BLUES (3-0-0): Tarasenko now has a team-high three goals on the season after his performance on Monday, while defenseman Alex Pietrangelo and Jaden Schwartz each notched an assist and top St. Louis with five points apiece. Paul Stastny also helped set up a goal, closing within three points of 600 in his career, and fellow center Ivan Barbashev registered one shot over 9 minutes, 34 seconds of ice time in his season debut. Jake Allen has played all three games, turning aside 107-of-115 shots - including 40-of-42 to beat the Islanders, but backup Carter Hutton (2-0-0, .945 save percentage against the Rangers) is slated to start on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (1-2-0): Mika Zibanejad is warming to the challenge of even more responsibility as the No. 1 center by recording at least one goal in every game and four overall in the early going. “I just am trying to place myself in a good spot out there and the guys are finding me and the puck seems to be going in,” Zibanejad told reporters. “That’s just the mentality. You just have to keep shooting when you are hot.” Mats Zuccarello leads the team with four assists and five points while the veteran Rick Nash has yet to record a point but is second on the team with 13 shots.

    OVERTIME

    1. St. Louis RW Scottie Upshall, who was re-signed as a free agent just before the season began, is one away from 700 games in his career.

    2. The Rangers have converted four of their 12 opportunities with the man advantage but allowed four power-play goals in three games.

    3. New York, which is 4-1-1 in its last six meetings with the Blues, claimed RW Adam Cracknell off waivers from Dallas on Monday.

    PREDICTION: Rangers 3, Blues 2

    Preview: Blue Jackets at Hurricanes

    Gracenote
    Oct 9, 2017

The Columbus Blue Jackets were quickly brought back to earth following an impressive season-opening victory. The Carolina Hurricanes hope to avoid a similar fate in their second game of the season when they host the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night in a matchup of Metropolitan Division rivals.

Columbus blanked the New York Islanders 5-0 in its season debut but was promptly flattened in a 5-1 loss at the Chicago Blackhawks 24 hours later, which had coach John Tortorella mulling lineup changes at Monday's practice. "Well, we need to have the puck so we got to try and find someone who's going to grab the puck," Tortorella said. "It's determination. ... We have added skill but we're going to need determination too." There was no shortage of determination in the opener for Carolina, which overcame a two-game deficit and withstood a last-second tying goal before squeezing out a 5-4 shootout win over Minnesota. "There is a new feel, a lot of excitement, a lot of energy in the room and it showed out there on the ice," said Hurricanes forward Jaccob Slavin, who scored the decisive goal in the shootout.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Columbus), FSN Carolina

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (1-1-0): There will be one change for certain in the lineup for Columbus with the recall of forward Josh Anderson, who missed the entire preseason due to a contract squabble and was sent to the AHL for a conditioning assignment. “I wanted to get in game mode there,” Anderson said. “I felt like as soon as I got into that game mode there I felt pretty comfortable and ready to go." Anderson, who had 17 goals last season, was on a line with Brandon Dubinsky and Matt Calvert at practice Monday.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (1-0-0): Giving up the tying goal with three-tenths of a second left dredged up negative memories for Carolina, which suffered 31 overtime/shootout losses over the past two seasons -- the most in the league. “Confidence is a big part of any sport, and I think this will give us confidence,” Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. “There’s a whole different feel to our group.” Scott Darling required IV treatments following his victorious debut with Carolina but will be back in net against Columbus.

    OVERTIME

    1. Carolina and Columbus split four meetings last season, with the home team prevailing each time.

    2. Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky, who posted his 20th career shutout in the opener, is 8-5-0 with a 2.21 GAA versus Carolina.

    3. Hurricanes F Artemi Panarin had four goals and three assists in four games against Columbus while he was with Chicago.

PREDICTION: Hurricanes 2, Blue Jackets 1

    Preview: Blackhawks at Canadiens

    Gracenote
    Oct 10, 2017

The Montreal Canadiens hope to get their offense in gear Tuesday as they face off against the Chicago Blackhawks in their home opener. Montreal scored a total of three goals during its season-opening three-game road trip, which concluded Sunday with a 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers.

Brendan Gallagher is the only member of the Canadiens with multiple points while he and Phillip Danault each have scored a short-handed goal. Chicago was on the way to its third straight win to start the season Monday before squandering a two-goal lead in the latter half of the third period and dropping a 4-3 decision in overtime at Toronto. Defenseman Jan Rutta and Richard Panik recorded a goal and an assist apiece, with the latter's tally being just the second of the Blackhawks' 18 this season scored on the power play. Panik, who recorded a career-high 22 goals last campaign, is one off the team lead in both tallies (three) and points (five).

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, TSN2, NBCSN Chicago, RDS (Montreal)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (2-0-1): Rutta's NHL career has gotten off to a strong start as the 27-year-old Czech has notched at least one point in each of his first three games. He also has posted a plus-7 rating, which ties him with captain Jonathan Toews for first on the team. Brandon Saad, who tops the club with four goals, notched an assist Monday to pull even with Ryan Hartman and Patrick Kane for the team lead of six points.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (1-2-0): Scoring on Sunday just wasn't in the cards for Montreal, which had a pair of apparent goals waved off after video reviews in the first period. Andrew Shaw was ruled to have used a kicking motion to score on the first, while captain Max Pacioretty's goal was overturned due to goaltender interference. Defenseman Shea Weber, who leads the team with 12 hits and seven blocked shots, is the only member of the club with a positive plus/minus rating (plus-1).

    OVERTIME

    1. The Canadiens entered Monday one of six teams yet to score a power-play goal.

    2. Only three of the 19 skaters Chicago has dressed over its first three games have not landed on the scoresheet.

    3. Montreal has registered at least 34 shots in each of its first three contests.

    PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Canadiens 2

    Preview: Red Wings at Stars

    Gracenote
    Oct 9, 2017

The Detroit Red Wings were among the league's worst teams last season but they were perfect in one area -- the shootout. Fresh off a 2-1 win at Ottawa in the bonus format, the Red Wings look to continue their surprising start when they kick off a three-game road trip at the struggling Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.

Detroit has been projected to finish last in the Atlantic Division but it owns a pair of victories over playoff clubs from last season, following up a 4-2 win over Minnesota by edging the Senators. Frans Nielsen scored the decisive tally againt Ottawa, giving the Red Wings 11 straight shootout wins and tying him with Radim Vrbata for the most goals (45) in the extra format. The Stars have been a trendy pick to win the Central Division but lost at home to expansion Vegas 2-1 before dropping a 4-2 decision in St. Louis despite unleashing 86 shots on goal. "We're getting lots of shots on goal," Dallas coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We've got some things we really like and we've got some things we really don't like. ... We've got to bear down and be better in our own end. If we can do that then we can build something good."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (2-0-0): Defenseman Trevor Daley spent his first 11 seasons with the Stars and the past two with Chicago and two-time Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh, but Tuesday will mark his first game in Dallas since leaving the franchise. “He’s done a great job,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “He is confident. He’s got poise under pressure – game gets tied, he doesn’t panic. And he gives us another guy that can play minutes.” Center Martin Hanzal is expected back in the lineup after exiting Saturday's game with a lower-body injury.

ABOUT THE STARTS (0-2-0): Not only is Dallas leading the league in shots on goal, it also is allowing the fewest (25.5), so the team is confident it is on the right track. "You've just got to keep everyone composed and sticking to the game plan," defenseman Marc Methot told the Dallas Morning News. "You know Hitch has been here before and he knows what to do. You have to just trust the system and roll with it." Ben Bishop, who was forced out of the opener by a cut over his eye, has not allowed a goal as he prepares to make his second start in net.

    OVERTIME

    1. Red Wings G Jimmy Howard has stopped 74 of 77 shots and will get the start again Tuesday.

    2. F Adam Cracknell, placed on waivers by the Stars on Sunday, was claimed by the New York Rangers on Monday.

    3. Nielsen is 45 of 91 in the shootout, including a league-best 20 game-deciding goals.

PREDICTION: Stars 4, Red Wings 2

    Preview: Senators at Canucks

    Gracenote
    Oct 9, 2017

While captain Erik Karlsson continues to recover from offseason surgery on his ankle, the Ottawa Senators hit the road to open a three-game swing through western Canada that begins at the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. The Senators are in search of their first victory, having opened the season with a pair of shootout losses.

Karlsson, Ottawa's do-everything defenseman who led the team in scoring and helped it to the Eastern Conference finals last season, did not accompany the Senators on the trek but could join up with them over the weekend. “We have everything (at home) to take care of him,” coach Guy Boucher told the Ottawa Citizen. “We have everything in the gym, the equipment and he can do things two or three times a day.” First-year coach Travis Green was victorious in his NHL debut as Vancouver topped Connor McDavid and Edmonton 3-2 on Saturday night. I thought we had a hell of a game against a really good hockey team," said Green, who spent the previous four seasons coaching the franchise's American Hockey League affiliate in Utica.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN5 (Ottawa), Sportsnet Vancouver

ABOUT THE SENATORS (0-0-2): Karlsson isn't the only issue on the blue line -- Ottawa also is without veteran defenseman Johnny Oduya and Ben Harpur, who was injured in Saturday's loss after he was called up to replace Oduya. The Senators need to get untracked on the power play after going 0-for-12 in the first two games. “We're missing one of our big pieces with (Karlsson) and we’ve got to try to get a few more pucks through, get a few more shots and try to create havoc down low,” forward Mike Hoffman said.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (1-0-0): Forward Bo Horvat led Vancouver with a career-best 20 goals last season -- and that's after the former first-round draft pick ended the year on a 17-game drought. That's why it was so encouraging for the Canucks to see Horvat score twice in the season opener against the Oilers. "You always want to start off hot, you always want to start off strong," Horvat said. "You look (around the league) all these guys scoring lots of goals already. "It definitely helps my confidence."

    OVERTIME

    1. F Alex Burrows, who played 12 seasons with Vancouver before he was traded to Ottawa in February, needs one goal to reach 200 for his career.

    2. The Canucks, who ranked 29th in the league on the power play last season, were 1-for-7 against Edmonton.

    3. Ottawa recalled Ds Thomas Chabot and Christian Jaros from Belleville of the AHL.

    PREDICTION: Canucks 3, Senators 2

    Mountaineer Park - Race #9 - Post: 9:56pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $6,300 Class Rating: 66

    Rating: 3

    #3 JOE HARDOON (ML=20/1)
    #4 ON THE ZIP (ML=9/2)
    #2 MY NICKY (ML=20/1)

JOE HARDOON - Don't often see a beneficial ROI like +378. This jockey/handler twosome has done well together over the last year. The August 16th affair at Presque Isle Downs was at a class level of (76). Dropping to a lower level a significant amount, so he should be in a good place. ON THE ZIP - Good return on investment for this jockey and handler pair. Look at this gelding's PP lines. With each affair he keeps getting closer. The fact that this gelding is entered right back into a race so quickly means he's fit and ready. Demczyk drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more from the horse's history to think this animal will be tough to beat at this level. Have to give this gelding a chance. Ran a nice effort last race out within the last month. MY NICKY - Trainer Cox moves this thoroughbred to a lower class level to face a lower class of horses. Look for a strong race racing against these lower level horses. Past performance data show this thoroughbred with 3 improving speed ratings. Rivera should be on a live horse right here in this race.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #10 TOOMANYFORBENNY (ML=6/5), #5 PRECIOUS ENERGY (ML=7/2),

TOOMANYFORBENNY - Hasn't been on the Mountaineer Park oval in the last few weeks. Cause for some concern. PRECIOUS ENERGY - If you keep choosing these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be disappointed frequently. Pace makes the race. Hard for this speedball to be able to handle the pace pressure from the rest of this field.

    STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #3 JOE HARDOON on top if we're getting at least 4/1 odds

    EXACTA WAGERS:

    Rating: 4

    #7 MOON CHANT (ML=8/1)
    #2 MRS. REMBRANDT (ML=10/1)

MOON CHANT - Houghton brings her right back. I propose you stick with this hot filly. MRS. REMBRANDT - Rider jumped on this filly's back for the 1st ride on September 17th. Should be in touch with the equine even better in this race. Can't help but like the second time addition of Lasix by the trainer today. What that tells me is Vega thinks she can win.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 ULTIMATE CHALLENGE (ML=2/1), #3 SWEET CANDY DANCE (ML=3/1), #1 LISA LIMON (ML=5/1),

ULTIMATE CHALLENGE - This probable favorite may be out of condition without any recent morning activity. SWEET CANDY DANCE - Didn't show much run last time. Probably won't make an impact today. Finished eighth in her most recent performance with a quite unimpressive fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this group. LISA LIMON - Most unsatisfactory speed rating last time around the track at Laurel at 1 1/16 miles. Don't feel this mount will improve too much in today's event.

    STRAIGHT WAGERS:
#7 MOON CHANT to win at post-time odds of 2/1 or better

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    The Walker Group Picks

    # 2 SR. QUISQUEYANO 5/2

    # 1 PALTARREVENGE 3/1

    # 3 GATEWAY ARCH 6/1

I've got to go with SR. QUISQUEYANO. Radosevich has one of the best winning percentages in this group of horses with entries running at this distance and surface. Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a strong handicapping key. This horse ranks at the top in this lot. Should keep the strong string of finish positions intact this time out. PALTARREVENGE - Has run very well when racing a dirt route race. Ran a sharp last race. GATEWAY ARCH - It's a good sign that Hamm is using Rosendo on this horse. Hamm has a strong win percentage with horses racing in dirt route races.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    The Walker Group Picks

    # 4 STORMIN THE JEWELS 3/2

    # 6 D E LOVER 3/1

    # 8 E BAR GOLD 15/1

STORMIN THE JEWELS looks very good to best this field. He has to be given consideration given the competitive speed figs. Must be carefully examined based on the decent speed rating posted in the last contest. He has earned respectable figures under today's conditions and will most likely fare well versus this group. D E LOVER - Reason to like this gelding as he has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. The average class figure alone makes this one a solid contender.
