    Preview: South Carolina at Tennessee
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

South Carolina’s defense is coming off an impressive performance and hopes to produce another when it visits struggling Tennessee on Saturday. The Volunteers are trying to avoid an 0-3 start to SEC play, with a trip to top-ranked Alabama looming next week.

The Gamecocks scored a school-record three defensive touchdowns in the second half of a 48-22 home victory over Arkansas last week, and they should be licking their chops at the thought of facing a Tennessee offense that hasn’t scored a touchdown in six quarters. Coach Butch Jones announced redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano will take over as the starting quarterback after Quinten Dormady went 5-of-16 for 64 yards with two interceptions in a 41-0 loss to Georgia in Tennessee's most recent game on Sept. 30. “You’re always looking for what you feel gives you the best opportunity to win the football game,” Jones told reporters. “You need to score points in this conference.” The Vols have dominated the all-time series, but the last five meetings have been decided by three points or fewer.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN. LINE: Tennessee -2.5

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (4-2, 2-2 SEC): The Gamecocks’ defense has taken a big step forward this season, holding all six opponents below their season scoring averages. South Carolina has forced 13 turnovers – tied for the most in the SEC — after recording four takeaways against the Razorbacks. Quarterback Jake Bentley has thrown five touchdown passes and no interceptions over the last two games despite the absence of star receiver Deebo Samuel, but the Gamecocks will need their inconsistent ground game to be effective against the Vols.

ABOUT TENNESSEE (3-2, 0-2): Despite the recent offensive struggles, the team has a solid running back in John Kelly, whose 494 rushing yards are the most by a Tennessee player through five games since Montario Hardesty gained 575 in 2009. Tennessee also possesses the best pass defense in the SEC and the third-best in the nation, allowing just 129.2 yards per game. That’s due at least in part to the fact the Vols have had a tough time stopping the run, as opponents have piled up an average of 252.6 yards on the ground.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. South Carolina coach Will Muschamp is 5-0 against Tennessee, including a 4-0 mark while at Florida and a win with the Gamecocks last season.

    2. Tennessee P Trevor Daniel ranks second in the nation in punting average (47.3 yards) and leads the SEC with 13 punts inside the 20.

    3. Gamecocks TE Hayden Hurst has 75 career receptions and needs four to overtake Danny Smith for the program’s all-time lead at the position.

    Preview: Kansas at Iowa State
    Gracenote
    Oct 12, 2017

One week after posting one of the biggest wins in school history, Iowa State tries to avoid an epic letdown Saturday against Kansas. The Cyclones went on the road to defeat No. 3 Oklahoma last weekend and now return home to face lowly Kansas, which hasn't won in its last 42 road contests.

Iowa State was a 28-point underdog against Oklahoma and trailed by two touchdowns in the first half before stunning the nation with a 38-31 victory. "We came in telling our whole team you have to believe for four quarters," quarterback/linebacker Joel Lanning told reporters. "Believe you can beat a top-five team in the country. That's what we did today." Iowa State now is in the opposite position as a big favorite this weekend against a Jayhawks squad that has allowed an average of 52 points during a four-game slide. Kansas coach David Beaty told reporters he's going to use Iowa State's upset win as motivation for his team. “I think there is a lot more parity in college football maybe than there has been over the last 10, 15 years," he said. "And the thing about it is, it’s still going to come down to who executes the best. Who executes at the highest level, the best, for the longest.”

TV: Noon ET, FSN. LINE: Iowa State -21.5

ABOUT KANSAS (1-4, 0-2 Big 12): The Jayhawks are facing a bit of a quarterback dilemma, as Peyton Bender and Carter Stanley both saw action - with limited success - in last week's 65-19 loss to Texas Tech. Bender has thrown as many interceptions as touchdowns (eight), while Stanley threw a pick as part of a forgettable 19-pass performance. “It’s one of those deals where we’re evaluating them every day anyway,” Beaty told reporters. “You’re only as good as your next. It doesn’t matter who you are. You’d like to have some consistency there, but hey, listen, the truth is, you’ve got to go with who you see in practice and how they’re progressing.”

ABOUT IOWA STATE (3-2, 1-1): The Cyclones had lost two of their previous three games - both at home - before dismantling the Sooners last weekend. Kyle Kempt passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start, caused by Jacob Park's leave of absence for an undisclosed medical reason. David Montgomery scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the season, although his yards per carry is down over the last two games after three strong outings to begin the campaign.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Iowa State has won six of the last seven matchups.

    2. Under coach Matt Campbell, the Cyclones are 0-9 when losing the turnover battle.

    3. Kansas K Gabriel Rui is 8-for-9 on field-goal attempts and has not missed on 16 extra-point tries.

    Preview: TCU at Kansas State
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

TCU knocked off a pair of top-25 teams in its last two games and suddenly has the inside track at the Big 12 regular-season title if it can manage the minefield at the back half of the schedule. That begins on Saturday, when the seventh-ranked Horned Frogs visit a Kansas State squad that has yet to lose at home.

TCU is the only undefeated team left in the Big 12 after winning at Oklahoma State and escaping with a 31-24 win over West Virginia despite giving up 508 yards of offense last week. "I would bet that every game is going to be like this," Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson told reporters after the win. "If you are going to win a championship, there is a general rule, every year I have been here for 17 years as a head coach, you win about three or four of them that are going to be ugly." TCU lost an ugly one last season at home against the Wildcats, who blasted the Horned Frogs 30-6 in the 2016 regular-season finale. "The way I look at it, (Big 12 teams) are all top-25 teams to me," Kansas State coach Bill Snyder told reporters. "I guess it is hard for people to understand that, but that is what makes college football so great. ... It is all about the same thing – who prepares the best, who plays the best and who coaches the best. That will never change."

TV: Noon, ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: TCU -6

ABOUT TCU (5-0, 2-0 Big 12): Horned Frogs quarterback Kenny Hill struggled mightily in the loss to the Wildcats last season, completing just 5-of-11 passes for 52 yards while the team was held without a touchdown for the first time since 2006. Hill is much stronger in 2017 while completing 69 percent of his passes and is coming off a performance against West Virginia in which he threw a TD pass, ran for a score and caught a TD pass. Hill has some offensive help in the form of running back Kyle Hicks, who returned last week from an undisclosed injury that kept him out of the Oklahoma State game and delivered 71 yards on 11 carries.

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (3-2, 1-1): Wildcats quarterback Jesse Ertz ran for 170 yards and a score in addition to his 159 passing yards and a TD in last season's demolition of Kansas State and again leads his team in passing (930) and rushing (336) yards. The senior threw for 224 yards and two scores in last week's 40-34 double-overtime loss at Texas before missing the fourth quarter with a knee injury but is expected to start on Saturday. Sophomore Alex Delton is the backup and he ran for 79 yards and two TDs in relief of Ertz last week.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. TCU is 2-3 against Kansas State since joining the Big 12 in 2012.

    2. The Wildcats own a plus-six turnover differential.

    3. Horned Frogs P Adam Nunez was named the Big 12's Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 43 yards on seven punts last week.

Preview: Texas Tech at West Virginia
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

Two big offenses will collide Saturday when Texas Tech visits West Virginia in a Big 12 matchup. The teams - two of the six tied at 1-1 early in conference play - have two of the top offenses in the country thanks to solid quarterback play.

Nic Shimonek and the visiting Red Raiders are second nationally with 46.8 points while ranked fourth in passing offense. Will Grier and the Mountaineers are ninth in scoring (43.8) and third in total offense. The big difference could be on defense, where the Red Raiders are much improved and lead the Big 12 with a plus-9 turnover margin. "We've been on the plus-side of things this year and that's really helped swing some games, put some momentum on our side," Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury told the media Monday. "And hopefully that continues."

TV: Noon ET, ESPNU. LINE: West Virginia -3

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (4-1, 1-1 Big 12): Shimonek (1,811 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, three interceptions) has connected with Keke Coutee (39 catches, 586 yards, five TDs) for three touchdowns of at least 40 yards. Justin Stockton (385 rushing yards, four TDs) and Desmond Nisby (197 rushing yards, six TDs) helped Texas Tech establish a ground game last week at Kansas, combining for 254 yards and five scores in the 65-19 win. Linebacker Dakota Allen has two interceptions and 39 tackles while lineman Tony Jones has two fumble recoveries to lead Texas Tech, which has lost three straight to West Virginia.

ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (3-2, 1-1): Grier (1,740 yards, four INTs) is tied for third nationally with 16 touchdown passes while quarterback-turned-receiver David Sills (33 catches, 512 yards) leads the country with nine TD catches. Justin Crawford leads the Big 12 in rushing with 562 yards and six touchdowns and Grier adds 140 yards and two scores on the ground. Linebacker Al-Rasheed Benton leads a solid defense - allowing 26.4 points and 227.2 passing yards - with 44 stops, seven tackles for loss and an interception.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Texas Tech's 14 turnovers gained - seven interceptions and seven fumbles - is one more than it collected during the 2016 season.

    2. West Virginia is 23-4 under coach Dana Holgorsen when scoring at least 40 points.

    3. Holgorsen spent seven seasons (2000-07) on Mike Leach's staff at Texas Tech, including three seasons with Kingsbury (2000-02) as their quarterback.

    Oct 10, 2017

While Lamar Jackson has done a reasonable job of maintaining the production that helped him earn the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore in 2016, Louisville has struggled to maintain the pace that had it in the running for a College Football Playoff spot throughout most of last season. The Cardinals attempt to brush off another loss to an ACC foe Saturday when they host Boston College.

Louisville's early aspirations to unseat Clemson as the top team in the conference were dashed with a 47-21 loss to the Tigers on Sept. 16, and whatever hopes the Cardinals had of challenging for an Atlantic Division title likely came to an end with last Thursday's 39-25 loss at North Carolina State. "We're not playing well enough defensively - certainly. … Offensively, we're doing a lot of good things, but we're not consistent enough. … It's almost like … you've got to go score every single time right now, and that's hard to do," coach Bobby Petrino said. The opposite has mostly been true for the Eagles, who have held Clemson and Virginia Tech below their season scoring averages but managed only 27 total points in three conference games - all losses. "They're going to get better, and they're going to grow. Sometimes it's never on exactly the timetable we want it on, but ... it'll come together, and it'll be beautiful," BC coach Steve Addazio told reporters after last weekend's 23-10 loss versus the Hokies.

TV: 12:20 p.m. ET, ACC Network. LINE: Louisville -22.

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (2-4, 0-3 ACC): The Eagles boast a wealth of talent on defense, including 2016 FBS sack leader Harold Landry, who has five sacks and became only the third player nationally since 2014 to record three in a game three times after reaching the benchmark again last weekend. Fellow defensive end Zach Allen has four sacks, is tied with Landry for the team lead in tackles for loss (eight) and paces BC with 55 tackles after setting a career high with 14 versus Virginia Tech, while safety Lukas Dennis is tied for the FBS lead with five interceptions. Michael Walker is among four Eagles with at least 15 receptions and leads the nation in combined kick-return yardage with 626.

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (4-2, 1-2): Jackson ran for two touchdowns versus the Wolfpack to set the conference mark for most career rushing scores by a quarterback (39) - a mark that also moved him into a tie with Michael Bush for the second-highest total in school history regardless of position. Dez Fitzpatrick finished with career highs of 10 catches - matching Ibn Green’s freshman school record set in 1996 - and 134 receiving yards - the highest mark by a Louisville freshman since Mario Urrutia had 138 in 2005 and the fourth-highest tally by a freshman in school history. Sophomore receiver Seth Dawkins also tallied career highs with five receptions - extending his streak of catching at least three passes to six games - and 134 yards in the loss.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. With 73 yards rushing last week, Jackson became only the sixth player in FBS history to run for 3,000 yards and pass for over 7,000 passing yards in a career.

    2. Opposing quarterbacks have combined for an ACC-low 101.57 pass-efficiency rate against the Eagles (11th nationally), who have allowed four passing touchdowns and recorded eight interceptions.

    3. The Cardinals have created a FBS-high 138 plays of at least 10 yards this season, 21 more than second-place Colorado State and nearly twice as many as the Eagles (72).

    Preview: Georgia Tech at Miami
    Gracenote
    Oct 12, 2017

Miami got a huge monkey off its back last Saturday, snapping its seven-game losing streak to rival Florida State with a last-second 24-20 victory. Now the 10th-ranked Hurricanes look to keep their undefeated record intact with Georgia Tech, fresh off a bye, coming to town in an early battle for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division.

The celebration following Miami's big triumph over Florida State was tempered by the disappointing news a day later that star running back Mark Walton would need season-ending ankle surgery. The Hurricanes are thin at running back -- quarterback Malik Rosier ranks second on the team with 37 carries -- but sophomore Travis Homer has shown flashes when given the opportunity, averaging 8.3 yards on his 25 carries (207 yards) this season. "I just know that I have to come out here and work as hard as I can," Homer said. "I hope I have showed the coaches that I am ready to come out here and do what he did." Georgia Tech's defense, ranked sixth in the nation in total yards allowed (260 per game), dodges a bullet with the absence of Walton, but the Yellow Jackets, who have yet to play a true road game this season, have lost their last four at Miami.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Miami -5.5

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (3-1, 2-0 ACC): Offensively, the Yellow Jackets' spread-option attack ranks among the nation's top 10 in eight different statistical categories and first in the ACC in seven of them, including rushing (second, 396 yards per game), time of possession (first, 36:39) and third-down conversion percentage (fourth, 53.3). Running the show is junior quarterback TaQuon Marshall, who has emerged as a dynamic threat in his four career starts this season, leading the nation in scoring (13.5 points per game) although he is far more dangerous as a runner (team-high 523 yards, nine TDs) than a passer (333 yards, four TDs). The defense has done its part to get the ball in Marshall's hands more often, as Georgia Tech has forced 26 three-and-outs on its 49 defensive series this season (53.1 percent).

ABOUT MIAMI (4-0, 2-0): With Walton out and unproven Homer in at running back, the Hurricanes figure to open things up more through the air, where Rosier has stepped up over the last few weeks, making big plays when needed in wins over Florida State and Duke. His top target, senior Braxton Berrios, has become a playmaker, earning ACC Receiver of the Week honors for his performance against the Seminoles, when he hauled in a career-high eight passes for 90 yards and two scores to become the first Hurricane since Reggie Wayne (2000) to catch a TD pass in each of his first four games of the season and the first Hurricane with a touchdown grab in five consecutive games (dating to 2016) since Leonard Hankerson in 2010. The defense won't have to worry as much about Georgia Tech's passing game as the Yellow Jackets have thrown the ball just 33 times for 333 yards, but Miami has been vulnerable against the run (148 yards per game) and the unit will pay dearly for missed tackles against Tech's explosive ground attack.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. The Yellow Jackets are the only team in the nation that hasn't played a true road game as it opened the season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game against Tennessee in nearby Atlanta, just 1.5 miles from Georgia Tech, then played three straight at home (a matchup at Central Florida on Sept. 16 was canceled due to Hurricane Irma).

    2. Walton is third in the ACC in rushing yards per game (107.0), ranked behind only Marshall (130.8 YPG) and Georgia Tech RB KirVonte Benson (119.0 YPG).

    3. The Yellow Jackets and Hurricanes have split the first 22 games in the all-time series (11-11) although Georgia Tech is just 2-7 under coach Paul Johnson, including a 35-21 loss to Miami a year ago in Mark Richt's first ACC game as the Hurricanes coach.

    Preview: Oklahoma vs. Texas
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

With an impressive road win at Ohio State and a 14-game winning streak in its hip pocket, No. 12 Oklahoma looked well on its way to a berth in the College Football Playoff before a stunning 38-31 home loss last Saturday to 31 1/2 -point underdog Iowa State. Now the Sooners have to quickly refocus for Saturday's annual Red River Showdown with Texas at the Cotton Bowl.

The Longhorns, not the Sooners, come into this one atop the Big 12 standings along with TCU at 2-0 following a wild 40-34 double overtime victory over Kansas State. But Oklahoma needs only to look back to 2015 when it was, ironically, upset by the Longhorns (24-17) to know that there is still a lot of football left to be played before the four teams for the College Football Playoff are selected. Oklahoma rebounded to win seven straight before falling to Clemson in the CFP that season. "If you look at the big picture, we're still in it," quarterback Baker Mayfield said. "We have 2015 to show for that. For us, it's not even about that right now. We've got to take care of business and win the Big 12."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Oklahoma -7.5

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (4-1, 1-1 Big 12): Mayfield, who leads the nation in completion percentage (74.6), passing efficiency rating (214.1) and passing yards per attempt (12.2), will be making a rare fourth start in the Red River Showdown. He's 1-2, leading the Sooners to a 45-40 victory last year, but he has put up very pedestrian numbers (66-of-103, 838 yards, 4 TDs, 3 interceptions) in those three starts and he could be without top big-play threat, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who injured his left shoulder diving for a touchdown against Iowa State. The big question is can defensive coordinator Mike Stoops find a way to fix a defense that has allowed an average of 486 yards and 39.5 points over its last two games against Baylor and Iowa State?

ABOUT TEXAS (3-2, 2-0): The Longhorns have bounced back from an embarrassing 51-41 season-opening home loss to Maryland to win three of their last four games with the lone defeat coming at No. 13 USC, 27-24, in double overtime. Head coach Tom Herman was coy about who his starting quarterback would be after sophomore starter Shane Buechele missed the Kansas State victory with a sprained ankle but freshman Sam Ehlinger, who passed for 380 yards and rushed for 107 more Saturday, has proven to be a valuable backup. After allowing 51 points in the opening loss, the Longhorn defense has tightened up and allowed an average of 17 points over the last four games with junior safety DeShon Elliott (nation-best five interceptions) and linebacker Malik Jefferson (43 tackles) leading the way.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Herman and Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley will be making their head coaching debuts in the Red River Showdown, marking the first time since 1947 -- when Blair Cherry's Longhorns beat Bud Wilkinson's Sooners, 34-14 -- that the rivalry has featured new coaches on both sidelines.

    2. Texas holds a 61-45-5 lead in the series, which began in 1900 and has been played at the Texas State Fair annually since 1929.

    3. Oklahoma has scored at least 30 points in a school-record 15 consecutive games.

    PREDICTION: Texas 27, Oklahoma 24
