    Preview: Utah at USC
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

Five of the six teams in the Pac-12 South Division have one loss and two will meet up Saturday when No. 13 USC hosts No. 23 Utah at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Stanford moved to No. 25 in the coaches' poll after handing the Utes their first loss of the season last weekend, while the Trojans bounced back from their only defeat two weeks ago against No. 9 Washington State by defeating Oregon State on Saturday.

Troy Williams led Utah to nine wins last season, including a 31-27 victory against visiting USC, but the Los Angeles-area native lost the starting quarterback job this season to sophomore Tyler Huntley, who hasn't played since suffering a shoulder injury against Arizona on Sept. 22. Williams was back in the starting lineup last weekend against Stanford, but was intercepted twice late in the game to spoil the comeback, and coach Kyle Whittingham wasn't ready to commit to a starter against the Trojans earlier this week. USC has also been dinged by injuries, particularly at wide receiver and the offensive line, but starters are beginning to filter back and the Trojans still have their best two offensive weapons in quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Ronald Jones II. Darnold, who made his first career start against the Utes last season, has been steady but not as spectacular as many envisioned heading into this season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: USC -13.

ABOUT UTAH (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12): The Utes have a difference maker on defense in linebacker Sunia Tauteoli, who recorded 11 tackles in last week's loss to Stanford, including 3 1/2 for losses. He's not only big, fast and athletic, but the 26-year-old is more mature physically and mentally than most of his opponents. Stanford running back Bryce Love rushed for 152 yards against Utah last week, averaging 7.6 yards a carry, but even those were seasons lows, and Love told reporters after the game, “No. 10 was flying around from sideline to sideline,” in reference to Tauteoli.

ABOUT USC (5-1, 3-1): Leading receiver Deontay Burnett is among the injured Trojans they hope to get back on the field this week. He practiced lightly on Tuesday after leaving the game Saturday with a toe injury, the second time this season he has been slowed by injury. Second-leading receiver Stephen Mitchell Jr. returned Saturday after missing two games with a groin injury, but Jalen Greene has remained sidelined the past two games with a concussion, another reason USC burned the redshirt year of freshmen wide receiver Randal Grimes against Oregon State.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Utah leads the nation with 16 field goals and an average of 44.75 net punting yards.

    2. Darnold has been intercepted at least once in every game this season, and the Utes have nine interceptions, tied with USC for sixth in the nation.

    3. The Trojans have won seven in a row at home against the Utes since its last loss in 1916.

    PREDICTION: USC 31, Utah 24

    Preview: UCLA at Arizona
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

Two quarterbacks who prefer to move the ball in different ways will meet Saturday when Arizona hosts UCLA in a Pac-12 South Division game. UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen has passed for at least 350 yards in five straight games, and Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate is coming off a 327-yard rushing effort that broke the FBS record by a quarterback.

Both teams are coming off close wins against Colorado and each are among five teams in the South Division with one conference loss. Tate didn't start against the Buffaloes last Saturday, entering the game after starter Brandon Dawkins was injured by a late hit on the opening drive and then leading the Wildcats to a 45-42 victory by contributing touchdown runs of 58, 28, 47 and 75 yards, and throwing for 142 yards and a score. The Bruins had a week off after defeating Colorado 27-23 on Sept. 30, giving them a chance to get healthy and work on a run defense that ranks second-to-last in the FBS at 284.2 rushing yards allowed per game, 85 more than the next-closest Pac-12 team. Arizona's offense is ranked fourth in the FBS at 319.4 rushing yards per game, which is also tops in the conference.

    TV: 9 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: UCLA -1

ABOUT UCLA (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12): The Bruins' ground game is better than it was last season, when it finished last in the FBS at 84.3 rushing yards per game, but there's still plenty of room for improvement and Arizona might provide that opportunity. Although it still ranks 10th in the Pac-12 at 115 rushing yards a game, UCLA seems to have found a reliable ball carrier in junior Soso Jamabo, who has combined for 170 rushing yards the past two games and two touchdowns. Jamabo, who missed the second and third games this season with an undisclosed injury, also gives Rosen a solid option out of the backfield, evident by his five catches in the past two games.

ABOUT ARIZONA (3-2, 1-1): Tate made his college debut against the Bruins last season on the second possession of the second half, and his first two drives resulted in 10 points in the 45-24 loss at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. That experience, playing UCLA at home and what he accomplished last week should give Tate plenty of confidence, but he'll likely need help to beat the improving Bruins. Nick Wilson will be facing UCLA for the fourth time in his career and the former 1,300-yard rusher who has battled injuries the past two seasons should be eager to take advantage of the Bruins' weak run defense.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Rosen's streak of seven straight 300-yard passing games is the longest active streak in the nation.

    2. Arizona's defense has 21 three-and-outs through the first five games after having 30 in 12 games last season.

    3. The Wildcats have converted five of six fourth-down tries (83.3 percent), which is tied for sixth in the nation.

    PREDICTION: UCLA 38, Arizona 35

Preview: Boise State at San Diego State
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

Off to its best start since 1975 and armed with its highest ranking since 1978, unbeaten San Diego State has its sights set on a New Year's Six bowl. The 18th-ranked Aztecs face perhaps their biggest obstacle in that regard when they host Boise State in Mountain West play on Saturday night.

The Aztecs, led by Heisman Trophy contender Rashaad Penny, have won back-to-back Mountain West championships, but head coach Rocky Long says most people east of the Rocky Mountains "know who Boise State is and they don't know who the rest of us are. ... Those people associate our league with Boise because of history." Never mind, as Long is quick to point out, that the Broncos, also known for their home blue "Smurf Turf", have reached the Mountain West title game just once in the past four years and have lost five league games over the last two years. "I don't think anybody in our league sees (Boise's mystique) anymore, but everybody past the Rocky Mountains sees that," Long said. Added Penny: "We know what this atmosphere is like and we know these coaches and the Boise coaches probably don't get along. And that's something we like. We like playing with that edge and like having that type of rival."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: San Diego State -7

ABOUT BOISE STATE (3-2, 1-0 Mountain West): The Broncos blew a 31-10 fourth quarter lead at No. 9 Washington State on Sept. 9 and eventually lost in triple overtime, 47-44, or they very well could be ranked as well. Running back Alexander Mattison rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries and quarterback Brett Rypien passed for 125 yards and a touchdown in a 24-7 victory at BYU last Friday -- a game in which the Boise State defense held the Cougars to just 238 total yards and 12 first downs. After holding BYU to just 66 yards rushing on 23 attempts, an average of 2.9 yards per carry, the Broncos will now try and slow down Penny, who is second in the nation rushing yards with 993.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (6-0, 2-0): The 5-foot-11, 220-pound Penny leads the FBS in all-purpose yards (220.8) and lit up Twitter last week with a 36-yard run in a 41-10 win at UNLV during which he steamrolled cornerback Tim Hough and sent him flying backward several yards. Quarterback Christian Chapman offers balance to the offense, completing 80-of-127 passes (63 percent) for 968 yards, seven touchdowns with just one interception. Long's famed 3-3-5 blitz-from-all-angles defense, led by linebacker Ronley Lakalaka (33 tackles, two sacks), is allowing just 310.7 yards per game, has forced 12 turnovers and also produced 17 sacks.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Boise State has registered 158 wins since the start of the 2003 season, the most of any FBS team. Ohio State is second (157).

    2. San Diego State has won 35 straight games when rushing for at least 200 yards.

    3. Penny has a streak of six consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

    Preview: Washington at Arizona State
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

Fifth-ranked Washington is halfway through an undefeated regular season and looks to maintain its unblemished record when it visits Arizona State in Saturday's Pac-12 contest. The Huskies are looking to make the College Football Playoff for the second straight season and know they can't afford a slip-up against the Sun Devils.

Washington won its first three Pac-12 games by an average of 31 points but coach Chris Petersen sees challenges ahead with UCLA, Stanford, Utah and Washington State among the remaining opponents on the slate. "Each week I think the kids have really responded," Petersen said in a press conference. "But I think as we move forward here, I think we're going to be tested like we haven't been tested." The Huskies haven't won in Tempe since 2001 but the Sun Devils may have issues keeping that streak alive due to a leaky defense that allows an average of 36.4 points. Arizona State has given up 30 or more points in all five of its games and gave up 301 rushing yards to Stanford star Bryce Love in its most recent game, when it fell 34-24 on Sept. 30.

TV: 10:45 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Washington -17.5

ABOUT WASHINGTON (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12): Junior quarterback Jake Browning has passed for 1,466 yards and 14 touchdowns this season and his career TD count sits at 73, two behind school record-holder Keith Price (2010-13). Senior Dante Pettis excels at catching passes (37 for 416 yards and six touchdowns) and returning punts (three scores to tie the NCAA mark of eight career touchdowns) and now looks to be getting help from freshman tight end Hunter Bryant, who had nine catches for 121 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday's rout of California. Junior outside linebacker Tevis Bartlett (team-best 7.5 tackles for loss) is one of many key players for a defense that is also receiving strong play from redshirt freshman defensive end Ryan Bowman (team-leading 3.5 sacks).

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (2-3, 1-1): Senior running back Demario Richard is only averaging 3.3 yards with a long run of 14 in four games this season but the dangerous performer has 3,019 career all-purpose yards and 25 total touchdowns. Junior quarterback Manny Wilkins has passed for 1,452 yards and eight touchdowns against just two interceptions and he set a school mark with 192 consecutive attempts without being picked off prior to throwing two in the loss to Stanford. Senior middle linebacker DJ Calhoun (48) and junior weakside linebacker Sam Christian (47) rack up the tackles as ball carriers routinely break past the defensive line with the Sun Devils allowing 190.6 rushing yards per game and a porous average of 5.8 yards per carry.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Washington cruised to a 44-18 win over Arizona State last season to halt a 10-game losing streak in a series that the Sun Devils lead 18-16.

    2. Sun Devils sophomore WR N'Keal Harry (476 receiving yards) has outputs of 170 and 148 this season.

    3. Huskies junior RB Myles Gaskin (559 rushing yards) sits fourth in school history in career rushing yardage (3,234) and is tied for third with Joe Steele (1976-79) with 32 rushing scores.

    Preview: Oregon at Stanford
    Gracenote
    Oct 11, 2017

Two of the top running backs in the Pac-12 square off Saturday as Oregon visits No. 25 Stanford, which has won three in a row following a two-game skid. Stanford’s Bryce Love ranks first nationally with 206.7 rushing yards per game while Royce Freeman has run for 10 touchdowns to lead Oregon's injury-plagued offense.

Love contributed a 68-yard touchdown while finishing with a season-low 152 yards on 20 carries in last Saturday’s 23-20 win over Utah as Stanford remained one loss behind Washington and Washington State in the Pac-12 North. Love has made 20 runs of 20-plus yards this season to pace the Cardinal, which rotated quarterbacks Keller Chryst and K.J. Costello against the Utes and could do so again this week. While Love has carried Stanford's offense, the team ranks eighth in the conference in pass defense (251.8 yards per game), ninth in rushing defense (182) and eighth in total defense (433.8). The unit faces another test against Freeman and an Oregon offense that expects to have top wide receivers Charles Nelson and Dillon Mitchell back from injury for Saturday’s contest.

    TV: 11 p.m. ET, FS1. LINE: Stanford -10.5

ABOUT OREGON (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12): True freshman quarterback Braxton Burmeister made his first career start in place of Justin Herbert (broken collarbone) in last Saturday’s 33-10 loss to Washington State, throwing for 145 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. Burmeister was hurt by the absence of several injured playmakers - including Nelson, who leads the team with 243 receiving yards despite not playing since hurting his ankle against Wyoming on Sept. 16. The Ducks lead the nation with 24 sacks but will need strong efforts from linebacker Troy Dye (team-high 52 tackles) and defensive end Jalen Jelks to limit Love’s impact.

ABOUT STANFORD (4-2, 3-1): The Cardinal have struggled defensively despite solid performances by lineman Harrison Phillips (team-leading 47 tackles, four tackles for loss) and safety Justin Reid, who recorded a team-high seven tackles and his fifth interception in the victory over Utah. “I don’t know if there’s another safety playing at his level in America right now,” coach David Shaw told reporters. The uncertainty at quarterback figures to continue for at least another week after Chryst and Costello combined for 188 yards on 13-of-24 passing and 42 yards on six carries with no turnovers against the Utes.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Stanford avoided a three-game losing streak against Oregon with last season’s 52-27 victory.

    2. Oregon is 22-3 in its last 25 Pac-12 road games when allowing fewer than 40 points.

    3. Stanford has not allowed a sack over its last three games.

    TCU vs. Kansas State

    UNDER 54

The Horned Frogs come into Manhattan with a 5-0 record, and a vastly improved defense since losing 30-6 here in Kansas last year. The Wildcats are always tough defensively at home at Bill Snyder Stadium, especially in October in bad weather. The forecast is calling for rain and wind this Saturday, and that might force both teams to lean heavily on the ground game. TCU has failed to reach the total in each of it's last four games during the month of October, and the under is 4-1 in their last five versus BIG12 teams. Last week the Horned Frogs allowed just three points in the first half versus West Virginia, and I expect another solid effort from the TCU defense this week.

    Take UNDER.
