    T-Wolves at Spurs 10/18/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

    by Adam

    Latest Odds : SA -1 Total 205.5

The Minnesota Timberwolves (0 - 0, 0 - 0 Away) are opening up their season on the road with a game against the San Antonio Spurs (0 - 0, 0 - 0 Away). Minnesota underwent one of the most dramatic roster change-ups in the entire NBA this off season. San Antonio just resigned LaMarcus Aldridge to a huge deal and they'll be anxious to see the star forward go out and earn it. San Antonio will be hosting this game at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, tx.

Minnesota has potentially one of the deepest rosters in the NBA right now thanks in large part to their star-studded starting five. Jimmy Butler comes over from Chicago to add an elite defensive wing to an already stacked line up. Minnesota also dealt starting guard Ricky Rubio in order to give time to newcomer Jeff Teague. Last year Minnesota was 13th in the NBA in scoring and 18th in points allowed. We expect both of those rankings to go up this year.

San Antonio is a team that is always prepared. The Spurs were 7th in the NBA in assists last year and 2nd in points allowed. San Antonio will once again be among the best teams in the NBA thanks to their defense and coaching. San Antonio will follow Kawhi Leonard if the star forward is able to take the court to start the season.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Timberwolves are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
Spurs are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. Western Conference.
Over is 8-3 in Timberwolves last 11 road games.
Over is 16-5 in Spurs last 21 overall.

Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves +1

Love all the moves that Minnesota made in the off season - add that with the injuries to Spurs Leonard and Parker and San Antonio goes down in opener. Coach Popovich magic keeps this close thru first three quarters but the injuries catch up to San Antonio late. Final Score Prediction, Minnesota wins and covers ATS 101-96.

Nuggets at Jazz 10/18/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

    by Mike

    Latest Odds : UTAH -1.5 Total 206

The Denver Nuggets (0 - 0, 0 - 0 Away) are opening up the NBA season on the road against one of the toughest teams in the Western Conference, the Utah Jazz (0 - 0, 0 - 0 Away). Utah comes into this year looking to maintain last season's momentum despite losing star forward Gordon Hayward. Denver has been on the rise over the last couple of years and new star Nikola Jokic will try to lead the charge. Utah will be hosting this game at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, UT.

Last year the Denver Nuggets were among the league leaders in points scored and rebounding. Leading the way was Nikola Jokic, the big center who has probably the best passing skills out of his position in the NBA. Denver averaged 112 PPG last year while dominating the boards and the passing lanes. Denver matches up well against Utah's defensive-first team.

The Utah Jazz last season turned into one of the biggest surprises out of the Northwest. The rise of Rudy Gobert into superstar defensive force helped to catapult Utah up the rankings. Utah is the best defensive team in the NBA, or they were last season, and the Jazz will try to maintain that mark. Utah will struggle, however, to contain all of Denver's numerous scoring options. Utah will lean on newcomer Ricky Rubio to orchestrate a more efficient offense.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Nuggets are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games.
Jazz are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
Under is 5-0 in Nuggets last 5 overall.
Over is 5-2 in Jazz last 7 home games.

Free Betting Pick: Denver Nuggets +1.5

This young Nuggets team turns the corner this season and it starts early in first game. Jazz losing their young superstar Heyard in free agency makes this franchise take a step back this season. Denver can score with the best of them but it's the attention to defense that is difference in this one. Final Score Prediction, Denver Nuggets win outright as underdog 107-100.

Hawks at Mavericks 10/18/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

    by Adam

    Latest Odds : DAL -6.5 Total 198

The Atlanta Hawks (0 - 0, 0 - 0 Away) are on the road to open their year with a game against the home town Dallas Mavericks (0 - 0, 0 - 0 Home). Atlanta is in the first season of what is a true, from the ground up, rebuild. Dallas has never conceded defeat before and we don't expect them to try and rebuild this year either. Dallas will be hosting at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX.

Last year the Atlanta Hawks proved that their format wasn't working and now the Hawks are ready to completely rebuild from the ground up. Last season Atlanta was ranked 22nd in the NBA in points scored and 10th in points allowed. Atlanta will look to young guys like Dennis Schroder and Taurean Prince to lead the rebuild on what should be one of the worst young teams in the NBA.

The Dallas Mavericks struggled to score last season and their inability to rebound made things even worse. Dallas has another year with Dirk Nowitzki so you know Coach Carlisle will try to make it worth it for the Hall of Fame stretch forward. Dallas made sure to retain Nerlens Noel for another year and he'll be an important force in the drive to improve the interior game for Dallas. Dallas doesn't have much scoring talent in their roster so this could be a slow paced game for both teams.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Hawks are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
Mavericks are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Under is 14-6-1 in Hawks last 21 games following a ATS loss.
Under is 13-4-1 in Mavericks last 18 vs. Eastern Conference.

Free Betting Pick: Atlanta Hawks +6.5

Two teams in full on rebuilding mode and can't see laying this many points with either of these teams. Dallas might still have their hall of fame forward Dirk Notwizki but with limited minutes and aging body - he won't be enough to win by more than few points. Final Score Prediction, Dallas Mavericks win but fall short ATS 97-95

Pelicans at Grizzlies 10/18/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

    by Mike

    Latest Odds : MEM -3.5 Total 204

The Memphis Grizzlies beat the New Orleans Pelicans 142-101 last week, but that was the preseason. It will be for real this week when they open the regular season against each other in Memphis.

New Orleans brought DeMacus Cousins to the team late last year, and it will be interesting to see how he and Anthony Davis team up as twin towers. Those two should give New Orleans an intimidating presence inside, and it could open up the outside as teams try to contain the two big guys.

Memphis has also had some changes for this year that they hope will make them more competitive. Wayne Selden was added to the team late last year and played against his former team, the Pelicans in his first start for Memphis last year. Selden has since worked himself into a starting role. While a lot of teams made major changes, the Grizzlies changed more with role players. New players like Selden, Ben McLemore and rookie Ivan Rabb will determine how far Memphis goes this year.

These teams were 2-2 against each other last year. New Orleans won the last two meetings after Cousins was added to the team.

Memphis has made the playoffs eight straight seasons, but prognosticators are predicting they may not make it this year. The Grizzlies are in a period of change as some faces are changing. The Pelicans seem to be on an upward trend with some interesting trades and new players on the team this year.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Pelicans are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
Grizzlies are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Under is 6-2 in Pelicans last 8 vs. NBA Southwest.
Over is 3-0-1 in Grizzlies last 4 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

Free Betting Pick: New Orleans Pelicans +3.5

The aging Grizzlies have started to rebuild their roster but still think Memphis is not athletic enough to deal with young talented teams like New Orleans. Pelicans just need to stay healthy and will show why with big road win to start season. Final Score Prediction, New Orleans Pelicans win outright as underdog 103-100.

Heat at Magic 10/18/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

    by Jim

    Latest Odds : MIA -3 Total 205.5

Miami may be without Dwayne Wade, but many view the Heat as a team that could still return to the playoffs under the guidance of head coach Erik Spoelstra. He's put together some good teams in the post-LeBron James era in Miami and has a growing reputation as one of the best tacticians in the NBA.

Veteran point guard Goran Dragic quietly had an impressive scoring season last year. For the first time since the 13-14 season in Phoenix, he averaged better than 20 points per game at 20.3. He also dished out 5.8 assists per game and had a field goal percentage of .475.

The Heat drafted a first-round project in center Bam Adebayo. The 20 year old out of Kentucky has great raw skills and size. He's gone for 13 and 15 points in the last two preseason games and could join Hassan Whiteside to form one of the deepest center rotations in the NBA.

Orlando was terrible down the stretch last season en route to just 29 wins. The reward was draft pick Jonathan Isaac, a forward out of Florida State. He's been averaging around 20 minutes per game in the preseason and shouldn't be expected to play a huge role right away.

Center and 7-footer Nikola Vucevic out of Switzerland averaged a double-double last season with 14.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Without a lot of offensive support in Orlando, it was his weakest NBA season in terms of field goal percentage.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Heat are 14-2 ATS in their last 16 Wednesday games.
Magic are 12-26-1 ATS in their last 39 home games.
Over is 4-1 in Heat last 5 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
Over is 3-1-1 in Magic last 5 games following a ATS loss.

Free Betting Pick: Miami Heat -3

Last year when healthy this Miami team was very good and think Heat pick up right where they left off. Heat biggest key in off-season was keeping Dion Waiters as free agent and he will prove why in big opening night. Magic are just no match for talented Heat team - Final Score Prediction, Miami Heat win and cover ATS 105-96.

    76ers at Wizards 10/18/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

    by Eddie

    Latest Odds : WAS -7 Total 215.5

In the first game of a Wednesday night NBA doubleheader on ESPN, the Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards will open up their season from the Verizon Center. After years of asking fans to trust the process, Philadelphia might be ready to become a playoff contender. For that to happen, talented C Joel Embiid and F Ben Simmons to play more than the 31 combined games that they appeared in a year ago.

Philadelphia selected G Markelle Fultz with the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft and is expected to come off the bench in this contest. Sharpshooter J.J. Redick was brought in to improve an offense that ranked last in the NBA in efficiency last year.

The Washington Wizards won 49 games last season and won the NBA Southeast Division title for the first time in almost 40 years. Head coach Scott Brooks brings back the young, talented core of John Wall, Bradley Beal, and Otto Porter Jr. The Wizards fell in Game seven of the Conference Semifinals versus Boston last year and figure to make another deep run in this postseason.

Washington counts on 33-year old center Martin Gortat to anchor the middle and F Markieff Morris rounds out the starting five. The Wizards’ biggest move in the offseason was signing John Wall to an extension and matching Brooklyn’s offer sheet to Otto Porter Jr.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Philadelphia is 13-4 ATS in its last 17 games on the road.
Washington is 11-3 SU in its last 14 games when playing Philadelphia.
Washington is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games when playing at home against Philadelphia.
The total has gone OVER in 8 of Philadelphia's last 9 games.
The total has gone OVER in 6 of Washington's last 8 games.

Free Betting Pick: Washington Wizards -7

Philadelphia C Joel Embiid (ankle) will be on a minutes restriction early in the season and expects to play about 16 minutes against Washington. The 76ers finished last season as one of the best covering teams in the league and will be as the season progresses. However, I expect the Wizards to flex their muscle and cover on opening night. Final Score Prediction, Washington Wizards win and cover ATS 112-99.

Hornets at Pistons 10/18/17 - NBA Picks & Predictions

    by Eddie

    Latest Odds : DET -3.5 Total 204

The NBA regular season will tip-off for the Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons when they meet at the brand new Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday night. The Hornets expected to be a playoff team last year, but several key injuries caused them to fade down the stretch and miss the postseason. Charlotte’s roster depth was exposed and the team was just 3-17 during the 20 games missed by big man Cody Zeller.

All-Star G Kemba Walker averaged 23.2 ppg and 5 apg last season and is the unquestioned leader of the Hornets. Charlotte traded for enigmatic big man Dwight Howard and he will be counted on to be a double-double machine.

The Detroit Pistons finished eight games below .500 overall and missed the playoffs for Head Coach Stan Van Gundy. It was a disappointing result for a Detroit team that was expected to take a step forward after reaching the postseason the year before. C Andre Drummond can be a dominant force at times, but remains too inconsistent and a liability at the free throw line.

Detroit PG Reggie Jackson missed the start of last season with an injury and never reached his potential upon his return. Avery Bradley was acquired from the Celtics and will provide the Pistons with a top-level two way player.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Brooklyn is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games on the road.
Indiana is 8-1-1 ATS in its last 10 games.
Indiana is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Brooklyn.
The total has gone OVER in 7 of Brooklyn's last 8 games when playing on the road against Indiana.
The total has gone OVER in 13 of Indiana's last 18 games.

Free Betting Pick: Detroit Pistons -3.5

Charlotte F Nicolas Batum (elbow) will be out until Thanksgiving and F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (personal) will miss this contest. It will be interesting to see how these two squads come out of the gates after disappointing season. On opening night, I like Detroit to win and cover in their new downtown arena. Final Score Prediction, Detroit Pistons win and cover ATS 105-97.

Red Wings at Maple Leafs 10/18/17 - NHL Picks & Predictions

    by Jim

    Latest Odds : TOR -140 O/U 5.5

After hanging the first loss of the season on the Golden Knights, the Red Wings were not able to bounce back and maintain a winning form as they lost on Monday night to the Lightning. However, the Red Wings did make the game every interesting as they only lost by a single goal.

Mike Green has shown some great flashes of brilliance on the season so far. Green has managed to get the puck fed to the shooters at least 8 times on the year and leads the team in overall points at 9.

The Maple Leafs are a great offensive team on the season and it is easy to see why with the talent packed roster they have. The Maple Leafs lead the league in scoring at 5.2 goals a game. However, the defense is not doing its job as well as they are only giving up 3.8 goals a game on the season.

Auston Matthews is the player who has been leading the Maple Leafs on the season as he has been able to score 5 goals and has put in 3 assist on the season.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Red Wings are 0-4 in their last 4 Wednesday games.
Maple Leafs are 4-1 in their last 5 overall.
Under is 4-0 in Red Wings last 4 vs. Atlantic.
Over is 5-0 in Maple Leafs last 5 overall.

Free Betting Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs -140

The Red Wings have had quite a bit of problems on the season and it mainly stems from the lack of getting anything going offensively on a consistent basis. With this being the case and the Maple Leafs excellent offense the Red Wings will struggle and lose. Look for the Maple Leafs to win 4-2.

Blackhawks at Blues 10/18/17 - NHL Picks & Predictions

    by Adam

    Latest Odds : STL -120 Total 5.5

The Chicago Blackhawks (4 - 1 - 1, 9pts) are on the road this week in order to take on the equally hot St Louis Blues (4 - 2 - 0, 8pts). Chicago has easily been one of the most dominant teams in the NHL so far this season but they'll be tested by a feisty home team in the St Louis Blues. Both Chicago and St Louis figure to battle it out all season long for control of the Central.

The Chicago Blackhawks have been every bit the best offensive team in the NHL so far this season. Patrick Kane (2 goals, 6 assists) has been in refined form all season long and he has been one heck of a playmaker through the early week of the season. Chicago has also been dominant on the defensive end of the ice, holding opponents to just 2 goals per game. Chicago should be able to control the puck and the clock as a result in this contest.

The St Louis Blues are coming off of a heartbreakign loss to Tampa Bay but we expect a quick rebound. St Louis is led by Alex Pietrangelo (2 goals, 6 assists) and the Blues should be able to use his physicality to stay competitive. St louis is 10th in the NHL in goals against and 17th in goals scored. St Louis matches up well against Chicago.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Blackhawks are 22-9 in their last 31 games following a win.
Blues are 11-3 in their last 14 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game.
Over is 4-0 in Blackhawks last 4 games following a win.
Under is 14-4-3 in Blues last 21 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game.

Free Betting Pick: Chicago Blackhawks +110

The Blackhawks offense is definitely a strong point and the Blackhawks have been dominating on the season. Look for the leadership of Kane to really help the Blackhawks out as the Blues will struggle with the defense against a great offensive strike force the Blackhawks have. We like Chicago Blackhawks to win 4 - 2.

Canadiens at Kings 10/18/17 - NHL Picks & Predictions

    by Thomas
    Latest Odds : LAK -195 O/U 5.5

The LA Kings won their second straight game on Sunday when they beat the Islanders 3-2. The Kings get set to host the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday. LA is 4-0-1 on the season and 3-0-1 on their home ice. The Kings average 3.20 goals per game which ranks 11th in the NHL.

Jonathan Quick will make his 5th start of the season. Quick is 3-0-1 on the season and has allowed 7 goals. Quick carries a 1.74 goals against average and a .943 save percentage. The home team has won five of their last seven games in this series.

The Montreal Canadiens are in a tough scheduling spot. The Canadiens play in San Jose on Tuesday and then have to travel to LA to take on a tough Kings team. Montreal is 1-3-1 on the season heading into San Jose and have lost four straight games. Montreal is 1-2 on the road this season.

Al Montoya will make his 1st start of the season for Montreal. Montoya played in one game this season and allowed two goals on nine shots against the Capitals. The Canadiens lost their last game 4-3 on Saturday in overtime at home. Montreal averages just 1.40 goals per game which ranks 31st in the NHL.

    Recent Betting Trends:
Canadiens are 0-4 in their last 4 overall.
Kings are 4-1 in their last 5 overall.
Under is 5-1-2 in Canadiens last 8 vs. Western Conference.
Over is 5-2 in Kings last 7 games playing on 2 days rest.

Free Betting Pick: LA Kings -1.5 (-105)

The Kings are playing good hockey in the early parts of this season. Quick has looked sharp and LA has been able to score goals. Montreal on the other hand has been just awful. Montoya gets his first start in a tough spot. Final Score Prediction, LA Kings win and cover the puck line 4-1.

Capital One Arena, Washington, District of Columbia

    Preview: 76ers at Wizards

    Gracenote
    Oct 17, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers are about to add two No. 1 overall draft picks to a team already flooding with young talent as "the process" continues to move forward. The 76ers are expected to give Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz their NBA debuts when they open the 2017-18 campaign by visiting the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.

Philadelphia bottomed out with 10 wins in 2015-16 but started to see the turnaround take shape last season as Joel Embiid finally took the court following two seasons lost to injury and Dario Saric came over from Europe after originally being drafted by the team in 2014. Embiid, Saric and the rest of the young roster are now joined by the 2016 No. 1 overall pick Simmons, who sat out 2016-17 with a broken right foot, and the 2017 No. 1 overall pick Fultz, who will come off the bench to start but could see time on the first unit as a shooting guard while the 6-10 Simmons runs the point. The Wizards are poised to take a leap forward as well after bowing out of the playoffs in the conference semifinals last spring for the third time in four years. Washington brought back its core by signing Otto Porter Jr. to a $106 million extension and locking in star point guard John Wall with a four-year, $170 million extension.

    TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE 76ERS (2016-17: 28-54): Seeing a team on the verge of making a playoff run with all the young talent, the Philadelphia front office finally went out in the offseason and brought back veterans like shooting guard J.J. Redick and power forward Amir Johnson. "Everybody's gonna see him make 3s and do this," 76ers coach Brett Brown told reporters of Redick. "What I see is an incredible leader in the locker room. I see him being amazingly professional with his work ethic and his detail and his preparation to his body. An incredibly prideful pro." Johnson, 30, signed a one-year deal after spending the last two seasons with the Boston Celtics and will provide toughness in the frontcourt.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (2016-17: 49-33): Washington made it a point to focus on defense in training camp after finishing 24th in the league in defensive field-goal percentage last season, allowing opponents to shoot 46.6 percent. “I’m sure most teams start off trying to tackle all the fundamentals of the defensive concepts that you’re trying to implement, but we are going through all of them and hopefully we take some pride in it more,” coach Scott Brooks told the Washington Post. “We can score the ball with anybody in the league. ... If we can stay the same offensively, I’ll be extremely happy. But if we stay the same defensively, I don’t think that’s going to be good for us." The Wizards defense will be without one big man to start the season in forward Markieff Morris, who is expected to miss a month recovering from hernia surgery.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Wizards G/F Sheldon Mac could miss the entire season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn left Achilles tendon.

    2. Embiid (ankle) will have his minutes monitored to start the season.

    3. SG Carrick Felix earned Washington's final roster spot over G Donald Sloan.

    PREDICTION: Wizards 121, 76ers 109

    Preview: Nets at Pacers

    Gracenote
    Oct 17, 2017

The Indiana Pacers are trying to find a new face of the franchise after sending disgruntled forward Paul George to Oklahoma City in a trade over the summer. The Pacers welcome back only five players from last season's opening night roster when they host the Brooklyn Nets in the 2017-18 opener on Wednesday.

George helped drag Indiana to the playoffs last season but made it clear he had no interest in re-signing when his contract was up, leading the team to send him to the Thunder for a package that included former Indiana University star Victor Oladipo, who will start in the backcourt alongside point guard Darren Collison as two of the team's three new starters. "With a new team it takes a while," Collison told reporters. "Only time can tell. Even the best teams, it takes them awhile to jell. I don't expect to come right out of the gates playing together right away." The Nets are in a similar spot with three new starters and highlighted their offseason with a big trade as well, sending franchise cornerstone Brook Lopez to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that brought back former No. 2 overall pick D'Angelo Russell. Brooklyn could be in line for an even bigger upheaval for the franchise with owner Mikhail Prokhorov reportedly trying to sell the team.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), FS Indiana

ABOUT THE NETS (2016-17: 20-62): Brooklyn finished with the worst record in the NBA last season, and Prokhorov is reportedly trying to fetch a sale price of $2 billion. "We cross that bridge when the time comes," general manager Sean Marks told the New York Post of a prospective sale. "For the time being its business as usual, and until I’m informed otherwise I’m going about the vision we started out trying to get to, and the necessary strategic steps along the way. That’s the way we’re going to conduct business here from the coaching staff, the front office and so forth. Mikhail and I have open conversations about this, so there’s no sort of surprises and so forth." Business as usual for Marks over the summer included bringing in veteran forward DeMarre Carroll and swingman Allen Crabbe to a roster he hopes will make the Nets competitive.

ABOUT THE PACERS (2016-17: 42-40): Indiana is changing the offense with George, Jeff Teague and Monta Ellis gone, and 21-year-old center Myles Turner figures to take on a bigger role. "The ball stopped a lot last year," Turner told the team's website. "We had some guys who could take (defenders) off the dribble, and I thought we relied on that too much. Too much one-on-one play. This year I feel we're moving the ball a little better so far. The offense isn't going to be as stagnant this year. There's not going to be too much isolation basketball." Turner will be joined in the frontcourt by another 21-year-old, Domantas Sabonis, who came over with Oladipo in the George trade and is a skilled passer.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Pacers SF Glenn Robinson will miss three-to-four months after undergoing ankle surgery last week.

    2. C Timofey Mozgov will take Lopez's place as Brooklyn's starter in the middle.

    3. Indiana SG Damien Wilkins, 37, made the team out of training camp after being out of the NBA for the last four seasons.

    PREDICTION: Pacers 111, Nets 99

    Preview: Heat at Magic

    Gracenote
    Oct 17, 2017

The Miami Heat won 30 of their last 41 games last season, but still missed the playoffs due to a brutal start and hope to avoid the same scenario this time around as they visit the Orlando Magic on Wednesday to open the campaign. The Heat bring back virtually the same lineup they ended 2016-17 with and will enjoy a six-game homestand after the brief road trip north to play the rebuilding Magic.

“Everybody wants to get off to a great start. That’s going to be one of our biggest things,” Miami guard Josh Richardson told the Sun-Sentinel. “We can’t dig ourselves a hole again this year. We dug ourselves a huge hole last year and we spent the whole second half trying to climb out of it.” Guard Goran Dragic and center Hassan Whiteside lead the way for the Heat as they take on Orlando, which disappointed last season after starting their journey with serious playoff asperations. The Magic return guard Evan Fournier and center Nikola Vucevic, while additions such as first-round pick Jonathan Isaac along with veterans Arron Afflalo, Shelvin Mack, Marreese Speights and Jonathon Simmons can help. “I feel better and better, honestly, about the competitiveness,” Orlando center Bismack Biyombo told the Orlando Sentinel. “The chemistry is much better as well. The spirits of the guys and the coaches are in the right place.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Miami), FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE HEAT (2016-17: 41-41): Dragic averaged 20.3 points and 5.8 assists while Whiteside scored 17 and pulled down an NBA-best 14.1 rebounds per game a season ago to give the Heat a solid inside-outside threat. The key for Miami may be staying healthy as Dion Waiters (14.6 points) missed 36 games and Justise Winslow (10.9) was out for all but 18 contests in 2016-17. Kelly Olynyk, who averaged nine points with Boston last season, is the biggest addition and first-round pick Bam Adebayo could help inside down the road while Tyler Johnson (13.7 points) and Richardson (10.2) are key on the perimeter.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (2016-17: 29-53): Orlando did not get off to an awful start last season at 10-12, but never could find a consistent rhythm on both sides of the court and hope they learned lessons from it. Fournier, who is probable with an ankle injury, averaged 17.2 points in 2016-17 and Vucevic (14.6 points, 10.4 rebounds) is a consistent force inside and outside to build around. Terrence Ross added a spark after coming from Toronto in a trade-deadline deal, averaging 12.5 points, but has been hampered with a hamstring injury and may miss opener while point guard Elfrid Payton (12.8 points, 6.5 assists) has his moments.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Magic were last in the Eastern Conference in scoring (101.1) and field goal percentage (44.0) last season.

    2. Miami SF Rodney McGruder will miss at least three months after surgery to correct a stress fracture in his left leg.

    3. The Heat have won six straight season openers, including last year at Orlando, but the Magic won three of four meetings in 2016-17.

    PREDICTION: Magic 104, Heat 100

    Preview: Hornets at Pistons

    Gracenote
    Oct 17, 2017

The Eastern Conference looks very top-loaded, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards again expected to leave the rest of the teams in the dust. The Detroit Pistons and the Charlotte Hornets, who open their respective seasons against each other in the inaugural NBA regular season game at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit on Wednesday, are trying to join the party after both missing out on the postseason last spring.

The Pistons looked like playoff contenders at times in 2016-17 but were hurt by injuries to point guard Reggie Jackson and some growing pains from star center Andre Drummond, who is taking on a bigger role in the offense. "That's a role (coach) Stan (Van Gundy) kind of gave me a couple of weeks ago," Drummond told reporters. "He wanted to start running the offense through me because I’m able to move the ball and able to find an open guy and get them open shots. It takes their bigger guy away from the rim, too, when I do dribble handoffs and gives me a chance to offensive rebound and attack." The Hornets are hoping to return to the playoffs as well and made one major move by bringing in former All-NBA center Dwight Howard to man the middle. Howard is expected to anchor a defense-focused front line that also includes forwards Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Marvin Williams.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE HORNETS (2016-17: 36-46): Charlotte is led by point guard Kemba Walker, who is coming off a 2016-17 campaign in which he averaged career highs of 23.2 points, 44.4 percent shooting from the field and 39.9 percent shooting from 3-point range. Walker will have to get used to a new starting backcourt mate with Nicolas Batum expected to miss six-to-eight weeks with an elbow injury, and Jeremy Lamb will get first crack at the job while rookie Malik Monk comes off the bench. “[I’m] just trying to get ready," Lamb told the team's website. "An opportunity has come that I’m ready to take advantage of. Hopefully, Nic has a speedy recovery and we can get him back out there as soon as possible.”

ABOUT THE PISTONS (2016-17: 37-45): Jackson's 2016-17 campaign was a dud from the start as he missed the first 21 games with left knee issues and ended up playing just 52 games and averaging 14.5 points on 41.9 percent shooting. Jackson, who is owed $51.1 million over the next three seasons, made it through training camp healthy and will not have any restrictions on his playing time. "I’m confident, but the beginning of the season is kind of ugly for all teams," Jackson told the team's website. "We're going to have little missteps, a few of 'em here and there. I’m going to try to keep my turnovers down, but I’ve still got to be on the attack. I feel like my timing is good. Wednesday will be the first test and then keep trying to progress after that."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Pistons brought in SG Avery Bradley in a trade from Boston over the summer and will start him in the backcourt.

    2. Charlotte C Cody Zeller, who averaged 10.3 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, is expected to come off the bench behind Howard.

    3. The Pistons took three of the four meetings last season, including both in Detroit.

    PREDICTION: Pistons 108, Hornets 105

    Preview: Pelicans at Grizzlies

    Gracenote
    Oct 17, 2017

Star big men Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins begin a season together for the first time when they lead the New Orleans Pelicans into the opener Wednesday at the Memphis Grizzlies. The Pelicans were 11-14 after acquiring Cousins from Sacramento at the All-Star break last season while finishing short of the playoffs for the fifth time in six years, but with a clean slate the duo is primed to take a step forward together.

"Everybody wants to be the man, but just being the man by yourself is not going to help you win games in this league," Cousins recently told reporters. "The league is way too talented, way too competitive. Just having a talent like (Davis) on our side, it definitely helps with carrying the burden." New Orleans also hopes for big things from new point guard Rajon Rondo but he is sidelined four to six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a hernia. The Grizzlies have made the postseason seven straight times but were knocked out in the first round in each of their last two trips and said goodbye to stalwarts Zach Randolph and Tony Allen this offseason. Point guard Mike Conley and center Marc Gasol remain to lead a squad that ranked as one of the top defensive teams in the NBA during its seven straight winning seasons and ended the preseason with a 41-point win over the Pelicans.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS New Orleans, FS Southeast (Memphis)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (2016-17: 34-48): Guard Jrue Holiday will take on a more crucial role with Rondo out, and figures to be the primary offensive complement to the big men all season. The 27-year-old saw his scoring average dip to 15.4 from 16.8 a season earlier but shot a career-high 45.4 percent from the floor in 2016-17. With Davis often dominating underneath, Cousins attempted nearly six 3-pointers a game after arriving in New Orleans and hit an impressive 37.5 percent of those tries.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (2016-17: 43-39): Without Randolph and Allen and with coach David Fizdale now in his second season and freed up to utilize some of the team's youth and athleticism, the style of play should look a bit different in Memphis. "Obviously, we have a different team now," Fizdale recently told reporters. "We have a team that I think has more skill and more speed, and that obviously is something that I've talked about that I'd like to have a team that can do that." Former Pelican Tyreke Evans adds a scoring option off the bench and the team is hoping that oft-injured, high-priced forward Chandler Parsons - who shot 33.8 percent from the field in 34 games last season - has a bounce-back effort.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Allen - who signed with the Pelicans in the offseason after seven seasons in Memphis - will eventually have his number retired, the Grizzlies announced last week.

    2. Gasol made 104 3-pointers last season after hitting a total of 12 over his first eight campaigns.

    3. Davis recorded career highs in scoring (28.0), rebounding (11.8) and games (75) last season.

    PREDICTION: Grizzlies 104, Pelicans 102
