Wednesday comp play is the Dallas Mavericks as the home favorite over the Atlanta Hawks.

Neither team looks like they will be making much noise this season, but at least the Mavericks core is similar to last season's team. Atlanta on the other hand is going through a total rebuild, as Dennis Schroder and Kent Bazemore are really the only mainstays back from last year's team that saw significant minutes.

The time is right for Dallas to end a 7-game series losing streak, that is for sure.

Atlanta is also on a 6-1 against the spread role during their 7-game recent series domination. Look for that to change tonight.

Dallas gets the new season off on the right foot as they pick up the win and the cover.

    1* DALLAS

    (721) PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS VS (722) PHOENIX SUNS

    Take: OVER

Reason: Your free play for Wednesday, October 18, 2017 is in the NBA contest between the Portland Trailblazers and the Phoenix Suns. Portland had a very good preseason, going 5-1 and scoring a league high 115.2 ppg. The Blazers will be without guard C.J. McCollum (Suspension) here on Wednesday as he serves his one-game suspension. The Blazers are led by Damian Lillard, who averaged 25 points per game each of the last two years. Portland has stated they intend to start the season fast after recent years where they got off to terrible starts. The Suns finished the preseason with a 2-3 record an averaged 107 points and allowed 110. Both of these clubs scored big in the preseason and I don't see that changing as they each start the regular season. Play the OVER.

    Pelicans+2½

I'm recommending a play on the New Orleans Pelicans plus the points on Wednesday. We like the inside/outside potential for the Pelicans this season. DeMarcus Cousins joined Anthony Davis inside during last season, but the two will now have had time to develop chemistry with each other and the rest of the squad. New Orleans won't have Rajon Rondo (hernia) to start the season, but we have no problem with Jrue Holiday running the show in his absence. Memphis isn't the same team we have grown used to over the last several seasons. Mike Conley and Marc Gasol are still around, but HC David Fizdale will look to open up the offense a little more than recent editions and I do believe it'll take a couple regular season games before things come together. The Grizzlies whipped the Pelicans in the final game of the preseason, but I expect different results now that it counts. The underdog has been the way to go in this series of late and we'll look for the dog to cash again. We're recommending a play on the Pelicans plus the points on Wednesday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

    Wolves vs. Spurs
    Wolves +1.5

This play just missed out on our premium card. The Wolves and the Spurs kick off their season on Wednesday night, and with the Wolves as underdogs they have value.
The Wolves added Jimmy Butler this off season to along with Wiggins and Karl Anthony-Towns and most are expecting big things out of them this year.
I expect they will be fired up to prove a point early in the season, and on national television there is no better way to do it.
The Spurs will be shorthanded this game without Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard. I think they will really miss Leonard's defense in this game and it will cause struggles for the Spurs.
I think the Wolves will win this game.

Some trends to note. Road team is 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

Preview: Red Wings at Maple Leafs

    Gracenote
    Oct 18, 2017

The Toronto Maple Leafs hope to avoid a letdown just 24 hours after a confidence-building road victory when they host the improving Detroit Red Wings in an Atlantic Division tussle on Wednesday. Veteran forward Patrick Marleau, who has recorded three goals and five points with his new team, is slated to play the 1,500th game of his career as Toronto completes its first back-to-back set of the campaign.

The Maple Leafs posted their first shutout of the season on Tuesday, topping Washington 2-0 as Frederik Andersen turned aside 30 shots and defenseman Morgan Rielly notched a pair of assists for the league’s top-scoring team. The Red Wings suffered their first home defeat of the campaign on Monday as they went 0-for-6 on the power play, dropping to 4-for-24 on the season, and gave up a short-handed goal in a 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay. “I thought we were the better team 5-on-5,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill told reporters. "Our power play had looks, for sure, but we didn’t score and we gave up a shorty. That’s a hard combination. There were a lot of things process-wise we were really good at, but we certainly didn’t get the result we wanted.” Defenseman Mike Green continues to lead the Red Wings with nine points after scoring his first goal in Monday’s setback.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit Plus, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet 360, TVA (Toronto)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (4-2-0): Gustav Nyquist has landed on the scoresheet in just one of the first six games but registered a season-high six shots to match Green in the loss to the Lightning. While Anthony Mantha, captain Henrik Zetterberg and rookie Martin Frk have scored three goals apiece, Detroit still is looking for the first tallies from Tomas Tatar (13 shots) and Darren Helm. Danny DeKeyser (lower body) has missed three consecutive games and is expected to be out at least another week, but fellow defenseman Niklas Kronwall has posted a plus-3 rating in three games after missing three with a groin injury.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (5-1-0): Toronto showed it can win without receiving a big performance from reigning Calder Trophy winner Auston Matthews, as the 20-year-old center was held to one shot and no points on Tuesday. Rielly has notched five assists, pulling within one of 100 in his career, to lead the team in that category and Matthews has collected a club-best eight points while Nazem Kadri netted his third goal of the season against Washington. Andersen has played in all six games, but backup Curtis McElhinney is expected to see his first action of the season Wednesday after going 6-7-0 with a .914 save percentage with the Maple Leafs in 2016-17.

    OVERTIME

    1. Toronto LW James van Riemsdyk leads the team with 24 shots while recording four goals - second-most on the team.

    2. Detroit G Jimmy Howard is off to a strong start (3-1-0, .197 goals-against average, .942 save percentage) and is 5-3-2 lifetime versus Toronto.

    3. The Maple Leafs swept the four-game season series in 2016-17, outscoring the Red Wings 17-10.

PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 4, Red Wings 1

    Preview: Blackhawks at Blues

    Gracenote
    Oct 17, 2017

A trip to the Sunshine State cast a dark cloud on began as a positive start to the season for the St. Louis Blues. The potential return of Alex Steen could provide just the jolt needed to shock the Blues from their doldrums on Wednesday when they return for a brief pit stop at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.

"He looked good," St. Louis coach Mike Yeo said of Steen, who has been sidelined since breaking his hand in the preseason. "He's obviously a big part of our group, a big part of the leadership and then you think about all the intangibles that he brings, special teams, leadership, offensively, defensively, he's a key guy for us, so we're anxious to get him back." Yeo will decide on Steen's availability following Wednesday's morning skate for the Blues, who have mustered just three goals in back-to-back losses to Florida and Tampa Bay. Chicago expects to welcome the return of forward Nick Schmaltz from a four-game absence due to a head injury, much to the delight of Patrick Kane. "With us, we were playing together for about a month there, so you really get used to playing with certain guys and certain linemates," Kane said. "While he was gone I wasn't very good, so it'll be nice to have him back."

    TV: 8 p.m. ET, NHL.TV, NBCSN

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (4-1-1): Brandon Saad has welcomed his second stint in the Windy City with open arms, following up his season-opening hat trick with five more points - including his team-leading sixth goal in Saturday's 2-1 overtime win over Nashville. The 24-year-old has netted the game-winning tally in all four Chicago victories this season and looks to build off a two-assist performance in his last encounter versus St. Louis. Corey Crawford hasn't needed much offense this season as the veteran netminder has allowed just one goal in four of his five starts this season to improve his save percentage to a sterling .960.

ABOUT THE BLUES (4-2-0): Vladimir Tarasenko scored his team-leading fourth goal in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Lightning, giving him 14 tallies in his last 20 career meetings (regular season and playoffs) versus the Blackhawks. The Russian joins fellow 25-year-old Jaden Schwartz with points in five of six games this season, with the latter recording multi-point performances in three of those outings. Captain Alex Pietrangelo has matched Schwartz with a team-leading eight points (two goals, six assists) in six games this season, but the former has 14 (four goals, 10 assists) in his last 10 dating to 2016-17.

    OVERTIME

    1. Chicago LW Ryan Hartman is tied for the team lead with eight points (two goals, six assists), but has just two (one goal, one assist) in six career encounters with St. Louis.

    2. The Blues recorded at least a point in four of six games (3-2-1) last season versus the Blackhawks and thwarted 15 of 17 short-handed attempts.

    3. Analyst Ed Olczyk, who is six weeks into a 24-week chemotherapy regimen as he battles colon cancer, will make his return to the NBCSN broadcast.

    PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Blues 2

    Preview: Canadiens at Kings

    Gracenote
    Oct 18, 2017

The Montreal Canadiens seek their first victory since the season opener when they continue their California trip Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings. Montreal began 2017-18 with a shootout victory in Buffalo but is 0-4-1 since, including a 5-2 setback at San Jose in the first contest of its three-game trek.

One good sign for the Canadiens has been the recent play of Jonathan Drouin, who has recorded a goal and an assist in each of his last two games to reach 100 career points. Los Angeles, which has begun the season with a five-game point streak, is wrapping up a four-game homestand during which it improved to 2-0-1 with a 3-2 triumph over the New York Islanders on Sunday. Captain Anze Kopitar and defenseman Drew Doughty each recorded a goal and an assist in the win, with the latter's tally coming while short-handed early in the third period and proving to be the winner - his second in as many games. Kopitar leads the Kings with eight points and has recorded at least a goal and an assist in three of his last four contests.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN2, RDS (Montreal)

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (1-4-1): Tuesday's contest was Montreal's first since parting ways with Mark Streit, who mutually agreed with the team a day earlier to have his contract terminated following a failed attempt to assign him to the minors. The 39-year-old Streit, who spent his first three NHL seasons with the Canadiens, posted a minus-2 rating in two games after signing a one-year contract in July. Defenseman Joe Morrow, who signed with Montreal in July after three campaigns in Boston, made his team debut Tuesday and posted a minus-1 rating in 10 minutes, 22 seconds of ice time.

ABOUT THE KINGS (4-0-1): Kopitar shares the team goal-scoring lead of four with Dustin Brown, who is off to a strong start. The 32-year-old Brown, who served as Los Angeles' captain from 2008-16, has recorded four tallies in five games after scoring 15 or fewer in 79 or more contests in each of the last four seasons. Defenseman Jake Muzzin has become something of a power-play specialist as five of his 10 goals since the beginning of 2016-17 have come with the man advantage.

    OVERTIME

    1. Kings C Jeff Carter, who led the club with 32 goals last season, has yet to tally in 2017-18.

    2. Montreal has registered more than two goals only once this campaign, scoring three in an overtime loss to Toronto on Saturday.

    3. Los Angeles recalled RW Justin Auger from Ontario of the American Hockey League and assigned C Jonny Brodzinski to the Reign.

    PREDICTION: Kings 4, Canadiens 2
