Preview: North Carolina at Virginia Tech
    Gracenote
    Oct 18, 2017

Teams heading in opposite directions meet Saturday when North Carolina visits No. 14 Virginia Tech during homecoming weekend. The Hokies are 5-1 with their lone loss against defending champion Clemson and coming off a bye week after dropping Boston College 23-10 on Oct. 7, while the Tar Heels are trying to avoid a fifth consecutive loss in one season for the first time since 2006.

With a record-setting quarterback and a stingy defense, Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente needs to make sure his surging team doesn’t overlook its struggling opponent. “Well, you don’t have to look at the film very long to realize that they have good players, they’re very well-coached,” Fuente told the media earlier this week. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for coach (Larry) Fedora and the program, the history and the talent that they have on that roster.” The Tar Heels have averaged just 12 points per outing during their skid after last week’s 20-14 defeat against Virginia, and their only win has come against FCS foe Old Dominion. Virginia Tech will have a decided advantage at the quarterback spot, as Josh Jackson leads all FBS freshmen with 1,700 passing yards and 13 touchdowns and is second in passer rating (158.2), while North Carolina will give LSU transfer Brandon Harris his second start of the season Saturday.

    TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Virginia Tech -21.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (1-6, 0-4 ACC): Harris replaced Chazz Surratt last week and completed only 7-of-18 passes for 46 yards with three interceptions, but Fedora felt “Brandon’s decision-making in the game was fine and that there was one interception that he would like to have back.” The offensive highlight last week was 5-9 freshman Michael Carter, who ran for a season-high 157 yards and two touchdowns, including 127 yards and both of his scores in the third quarter as the Tar Heels came back from a 10-0 halftime deficit. Jackson, whose TD passes are the most ever by a Virginia Tech freshman, needs 141 yards to overtake Michael Vick’s freshman record for passing yards (1,840 in 1999) and is looking forward to attacking a defense that is surrendering 31 points and 461 yards per contest.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (5-1, 1-1): Jackson leads the ACC in passer rating (158.17), which is 13th in FBS, is third in the conference in total offense (309 yards per game) and fifth in passing yards per game (283.3). Wide receiver Cam Phillips, who ranks second in Tech history with 207 catches and third in receiving yards with 2,671, is hopeful to return after leaving the Boston College game with a foot sprain. Led by defensive backs Brandon Facyson, Greg Stroman and Adonis Alexander, opponents are completing just 44 percent of its passes for 387 yards with only one TD in three home games this season, and the defense is second in the ACC and seventh in FBS in scoring defense (13.7 points).

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 21-12-6, including beating then-No. 16 North Carolina 34-3 last season in a contest played amidst Hurricane Matthew.

    2. North Carolina has lost five straight ACC contests and hasn’t won a conference road game since a 35-14 win at Virginia on Oct. 22, 2016.

    3. Phillips leads the Hokies with 42 catches to rank fifth in the ACC, and he’s caught a pass in a school-record 33 straight games.

PREDICTION: Virginia Tech 38, North Carolina 10

Top-ranked Alabama is rolling toward a spot in the College Football Playoff as it looks to defeat visiting Tennessee for the 11th straight time on Saturday. Alabama is outscoring opponents by an average of 32.6 points per game while dominating the trenches on both sides of the ball.

The Crimson Tide are controlling games with their rushing attack (sixth nationally at 302.6 yards per game) and by halting opponents (national-low 66.7 yards while allowing just two rushing scores), but coach Nick Saban insists his team could be threatened by the Volunteers. "To get a group of people to be special all the time in every situation with all the noise and external factors and all the stuff that's out there, it's a real challenge," Saban told reporters. Tennessee, which was outscored 56-9 in back-to-back losses to Georgia and South Carolina, hasn't scored a touchdown in its last 10 quarters and coach Butch Jones has gone from the "hot seat" to a lava-like level when it comes to his job security. "I don't worry about any of that," Jones told reporters. "All my focus is on our players and our football program and getting them ready for the Alabama game."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Alabama -34.5

ABOUT TENNESSEE (3-3, 0-3 SEC): Redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Guarantano makes his second career start after completing 11-of-18 passes for 133 yards in the loss to South Carolina. "I think I played pretty well," Guarantano told reporters. "I think there's a lot of things that I can learn from and I think that there's certain things that I could have done better. But all around, I think it went pretty well, but not well enough for the win, and that's all that matters." Senior middle linebacker Colton Jumper has been solid with 4.5 sacks, but the Volunteers have recorded just two interceptions at the season's midway point.

ABOUT ALABAMA (7-0, 4-0): Junior running back Damien Harris has topped 100 yards in three of the last four games and has recorded a team-best 625 yards and a terrific 9.2 average. Run-first sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts (558 yards, six touchdowns) has thrown eight touchdown passes against one interception and has been responsible for 50 career scores (31 passing, 19 rushing) - two behind Harry Gilmer (1944-47) for third place on the school's all-time list. Junior safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (32 tackles, one interception) is the star of the unit that ranks fourth nationally in total defense (254.3), while senior cornerback Levi Wallace (team-best three interceptions) and sophomore defensive end Raekwon Davis (team-leading 4.5 sacks) are enjoying solid campaigns.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Alabama rolled to a 49-10 victory in last season's meeting.

    2. Tennessee senior K Aaron Medley (illness) and sophomore DE Darrell Taylor (suspension) each will miss their second straight game.

    3. The Crimson Tide have outscored their opponents 100-9 in the first quarter.

    Preview: Indiana at Michigan State
    Gracenote
    Oct 19, 2017

No. 19 Michigan State returns home Saturday looking to build on a pair of big road wins when it faces an Indiana squad still looking for its first victory in Big Ten play. The Spartans have won three straight, including triumphs at Michigan and Minnesota the last two weeks, while the Hoosiers are coming off a tough overtime loss to the Wolverines and face their fourth straight nationally ranked conference foe.

Michigan State's running game got a big boost last week with the re-emergence of junior LJ Scott, who recorded career highs in carries (25) and rushing yards (194) after sitting out the previous game with an undisclosed injury. Scott, though, was arrested Wednesday for driving with a suspended license -- the seventh time he has faced that or a similar charge, leaving his availability for Saturday in question. The Spartans also are powered by one of the top defenses in the country, ranking in the nation’s top 10 in total defense (fifth, 263.8 yards per game) and rushing defense (eighth, 93.3). Indiana’s offense has been solid, with redshirt freshman Peyton Ramsey (815 passing yards, seven touchdowns) set for his third career start under center.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET. ABC. LINE: Michigan State -7

ABOUT INDIANA (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten): The feeling around the Hoosiers these days is one of confidence - despite the overtime loss to Michigan - because of the presence of Ramsey in the lineup. Indiana was down 10 points with less than four minutes to play against the Wolverines' vaunted defense, but Ramsey was able to lead them to overtime and nearly a victory, even with a knee brace he had to put on in the second quarter after being injured. While senior Richard Lagow provides experience, as he led Indiana to a win over Michigan State last season, many around the program believe Ramsey provides the intangibles that can guide a good team to greatness.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (5-1, 3-0): Even though Indiana has played very good pass defense the last two weeks, quarterback Brian Lewerke likely will be happy to see the Hoosiers because it will mean playing in some better weather. Lewerke hasn't been able to get into a groove over the last two weeks, throwing for a total of 214 yards, and Michigan State has kept the ball on the ground because of rainy conditions in both Ann Arbor and Minneapolis. But Lewerke has a plethora of receivers from which to choose and is itching to throw the ball more, and the Spartans' coaches likely will try to open it up to keep Indiana from stacking the line against the run.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Indiana S Chase Dutra is coming off a career game against Michigan, setting new personal standards with his 12 solo tackles and 13 overall stops.

    2. Michigan State WR Felton Davis III leads the team with 24 catches for 300 yards, but five different players have at least nine receptions and at least 100 yards receiving.

    3. Spartans coach Mark Dantonio is 7-1 against Indiana, including 4-0 at home, although the loss was suffered last year in overtime.

Minnesota and Illinois boast two of the youngest rosters in FBS, but while the former has given its fan base reason for hope by playing its Big Ten rivals close so far, the latter has not. The Golden Gophers attempt to end a three-game losing streak and give first-year coach P.J. Fleck his first conference win Saturday when they host the Fighting Illini in a battle of the only two winless teams during West Division action.

Fleck led his charges through an undefeated run in non-conference action before losing late to Maryland in the conference opener and giving up two touchdowns in the final 1:17 en route to a 14-point setback at Purdue two weeks ago. Minnesota continued to show its resolve in last week's 30-27 defeat at No. 19 Michigan State, as the Gophers scored two late touchdowns to threaten the Spartans after trailing by as many as 17 midway through the fourth quarter. The same has not been true for Illinois, which is coming off a 35-24 home loss to a Rutgers team that had dropped its previous 16 straight Big Ten contests. The Illini have dropped six straight conference tilts by an average of 26 points and are 2-10 in Big Ten play overall under second-year head coach Lovie Smith.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Minnesota -13.5.

ABOUT ILLINOIS (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten): Ricky Smalling continues to be one of the few bright spots for the worst scoring offense in the conference (18.8 points), as he leads the league in yards per catch (19.4) while becoming the sixth player in program history to have a 100-yard receiving game as a true freshman last week after posting 111 yards. Sophomore quarterback Jeff George, Jr. threw for a career-high 308 passing yards against Rutgers and has the offense averaging 420 yards in his first two starts, but he has thrown at least two interceptions in all three games in which he has played. Smith announced leading rusher Mike Epstein will likely miss the rest of the season with a foot injury after the true freshman did not suit up last weekend.

ABOUT MINNESOTA (3-3, 0-3): Sophomore receiver Tyler Johnson almost singlehandedly brought the Gophers back versus the Spartans, doubling his season total for receiving touchdowns with three fourth-quarter scores, allowing him to finish with a career-high eight catches for 106 yards. Fleck pulled struggling senior quarterback Conor Rhoda in the middle of the second quarter and replaced him with sophomore Demry Croft, who connected with Johnson on all three TD throws - the first of his career - and compiled 194 total yards. Although the duo was held to 51 rushing yards on 17 carries against Michigan State, junior running backs Rodney Smith (73.7) and Shannon Brooks (64.4) comprise one of the most productive running back tandems in the conference, ranking eighth and 14th in the Big Ten, respectively.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. The Gophers have 77 underclassmen on their 111-man roster, while the Illini carry 75 on their 100-man roster.

    2. The Illini have forced 12 fumbles, tied with Wyoming for the most in FBS.

    3. Johnson became the first Gopher to catch three touchdowns in one quarter in a Big Ten game since Omar Douglas did so in the third quarter against Purdue in 1993.

    Preview: Arizona State at Utah
    Gracenote
    Oct 18, 2017

Fresh off its first win over a top-five ranked team in 21 years, Arizona State hits the road Saturday to face Utah. Late last Saturday night, the Sun Devils found the end zone on their opening possession against No. 4 Washington, and the defense took it from there in a stunning 13-7 victory over the visiting Huskies.

And now with games against Utah and Pac-12 South Division-leading USC up next, Arizona State coach Todd Graham knows there’s no time for any kind of letdown. “We have a veteran team,” Graham said in his weekly news conference Monday. “The guys have been here awhile, and they know it doesn’t matter what you do the last week. You’ve got the next week, and we’re going to Utah which is one of the more challenging places to play in our league.” The Utes, meanwhile have suffered close losses to Stanford (23-20) and USC (28-27) after a 4-0 start, but recent conference history says there is still hope in Salt Lake City despite a 1-2 Pac-12 start. “(Contending for the South title) is not out of the question,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said at his Monday news conference. “… I don’t think there will be an outright champion with two losses and everyone else with three or more, but there could be a (two-loss) co-champion with tiebreakers (coming into play).”

    TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, FS1. LINE: Utah -9

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (3-3, 2-1 Pac-12): The Sun Devils entered last Saturday’s game having surrendered 30 or more points in 11 straight outings, but held the high-powered Huskies to a fourth-quarter TD and 230 total yards while allowing only 3-of-14 third-down conversions. Manny Wilkins completed 29-of-41 passes for 245 yards in the contest and ranks fourth in the conference in total offense with 289.8 yards per outing. Kalen Ballage scored Arizona State’s only TD against the Huskies but finished with only 17 yards on nine carries and is averaging 50.5 yards per game and 3.8 per carry.

ABOUT UTAH (4-2, 1-2): The Utes squandered a 21-7 halftime lead last Saturday against USC and ultimately fell short when quarterback Troy Williams was stopped short on a two-point conversion scramble with 42 seconds remaining. Williams has gone 36-of-66 for 500 yards, two TDs and three interceptions while rushing for 32 yards and a score in starting the last two games in place of injured sophomore starter Tyler Huntley, and will rely heavily again on running back Zack Moss, who gashed USC for a career-high 141 yards on 20 carries. Led by linebacker Sunia Tauteoli (7.0 tackles, 1.25 tackles for loss per game), the Utah defense is surrendering the second-fewest points (20.0) and third-fewest yards (350.3) in the conference.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. With a 49-26 road victory last season, Utah has won two straight in the series following 11 straight wins for Arizona State.

    2. Sun Devils LB Christian Sam leads the Pac-12 in total (9.7) and solo tackles (6.8) per game.

    3. The Utes have the edge in kicking game with Matt Gay leading the nation in field goals made (16 of 18) and Mitch Wishnowsky ranking second nationally in net punting (44.75 yards).

Add in the fact that it's homecoming for Navy and UCF will face its biggest challenge of the season in order to keep its perfect record intact.

The Knights enter the weekend allowing 16.8 points per game, ranked 14th in the country, and 110.2 yards per game rushing - 19th best in the nation. But UCF has yet to face an offense like Navy, which features the triple-option attack and averages an FBS-most 397.5 yards rushing per game - led by junior quarterback Zach Abey, who has already run for 1,016 this season. To help the UCF defense prepare, head coach Scott Frost - who ran an option offense with Nebraska in the late 1990s - took snaps with the scout team this week. "I love option football. I lived it,” Frost said during his weekly press conference. “I feel like option quarterbacks now are kind of like giant pandas; they only exist in zoos and military academies. ... You’ve got to have a tough kid that’s smart under center, and I think Navy has that.''

ABOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA (5-0, 3-0 AAC): The offense continues to roll on for the Knights, who lead the nation in scoring at 50.6 points per game after averaging just 28.8 a season ago. The Knights have reached the 600-yard mark on offense twice in the last three weeks, having picked up 500 or more in three consecutive weeks for the first time since 1998. Quarterback McKenzie Milton leads the offensive charge, ranked second in the country in passing efficiency (203.6) and fourth in passing yards per completion (16.54).

ABOUT NAVY (5-1, 3-1): The Midshipmen hope to rebound from the first loss of the season after turning in an uncharacteristic performance in a 30-27 setback at Memphis - just the third defeat in 20 contests since joining the AAC. Navy turned the ball over five times, the most turnovers committed by the Midshipmen since 2002 against Boston College (six). "Super disappointed in the way we played,'' Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo told reporters. "Things that were highly uncharacteristic of us with that many turnovers, untimely penalties. But we have no time to wallow in our misery, we have to move on because ... we recognize what a tough challenge (UCF) is going to be. We are going to have our hands full stopping them.''

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. The Midshipmen have won five consecutive homecoming games, defeating Memphis, Tulane, San Jose State, Pitt and Indiana during the streak.

    2. Navy has recorded at least one rushing touchdown in 68 consecutive games while having scored at least two touchdowns on the ground in 61 of those games.

    3. UCF has never started a season with six consecutive victories and has not won six in a row at any point since 2013.
