    Preview: Raptors at Spurs

    Gracenote
    Oct 22, 2017

The San Antonio Spurs played the first two games without former Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard but still had little trouble shutting down their opponents. The Spurs will try to make it three straight strong performances with Leonard sidelined when they host the Toronto Raptors on Monday.

San Antonio is leaning on power forward LaMarcus Aldridge in Leonard's absence, and Aldridge delivered an average of 26.5 points and 10 rebounds in the first two contests while totaling four blocked shots. Aldridge helped hold the Minnesota Timberwolves to 43.5 percent from the floor in a win in the season opener and anchored an even better effort on Saturday, when his team held the Chicago Bulls to 37.8 percent from the field in an 87-77 triumph. The Spurs should have a much tougher time defending the Raptors, who exploded out of the gates with an average of 122.5 points in the first two games, capped by a 128-94 thrashing of the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. "We’ve got to be the best Toronto Raptors team we can be," coach Dwane Casey told reporters. "Offensively, there’s a niche we have to find, keep moving the ball."

    TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, TSN 2 (Toronto), FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (2-0): Toronto is beginning a six-game road trip at San Antonio and might be doing it without starting center Jonas Valanciunas, who suffered a sprained ankle against the 76ers after going off for 23 points and 15 rebounds in the season opener. Valanciunas is traveling with the team but is not expected to play on Monday. Picking up the offensive slack in Valanciunas' absence was All-Star guard DeMar DeRozan, who recovered from a lackluster season debut (11 points on 2-of-9 shooting) by going for 30 points on 8-of-12 from the floor on Saturday.

ABOUT THE SPURS (2-0): Leonard's potential return is still a question mark, but Aldridge could be getting some help sooner than expected from veteran point guard Tony Parker. Parker, who suffered a torn left quadriceps tendon during the playoffs last spring and underwent surgery, is already running and practicing. "His rehab is going really well," coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. "He's going 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 pretty much full speed. I think he gets to go 5-on-5 in about a week and we'll see how he looks."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Veteran F Rudy Gay is averaging 13 points in his first two games with the Spurs.

    2. Toronto PF Serge Ibaka is 7-of-11 from 3-point range.

    3. San Antonio took both meetings last season and three straight in the series.

    PREDICTION: Spurs 108, Raptors 106

    Preview: Wizards at Nuggets

    Gracenote
    Oct 22, 2017

The Washington Wizards had a solid start to their season at home and will try to carry over that success when they open a four-game road trip at the Denver Nuggets on Monday. The Wizards averaged 117.5 points in knocking off Philadelphia and Detroit in the nation's capital, although they hope to get more stops on the other end of the floor as the season progresses.

"We showed glimpses of when we were good, but if we don't pick up defensively on the road, we won't win any games," guard John Wall told reporters after Friday's 115-111 win over the Pistons. "We got to figure out a way to get back to playing defense consistently." Wall scored 26 points and Otto Porter Jr. broke out for 28 to go along with nine rebounds and four steals for Washington, which is looking to open 3-0 for the first time since 2005. Standing in the way is a Nuggets team that showcased a strong defensive effort to knock off Sacramento 96-79 on Saturday in its home opener. "Coming off a loss you always want to come out the next game and be aggressive," guard Will Barton told reporters, referencing a loss at Utah to begin the season. "We felt we had some lapses last game on the defensive end. We wanted to get into those guys and make them feel us."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington, Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (2-0): Washington has utilized an aggressive approach that yielded an average 29.5 made free throws, tops in the NBA entering Sunday. Wall led the march to the line with a 9-of-11 showing against the Pistons and fellow guard Bradley Beal has 23 attempts through the first two games. Wall and Beal combined for 53 points as the Wizards picked up a 123-113 win in their last visit to Denver on March 8.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (1-1): Denver bucked some notable trends with its low-scoring win over the Kings by snapping a 23-game losing streak when held under 100 points and surviving an affair in which star forward Nikola Jokic was held scoreless. "You don't have to score to be effective," forward Paul Millsap said of Jokic, who chipped in nine rebounds and seven assists. "There are only a certain amount of guys in this league who can do that and he's one of those guys. He's willing to sacrifice and try to get everybody else involved." Millsap scored 18 points in his home debut with the Nuggets while backup Kenneth Faried matched him in just 23 minutes.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Jokic, who averaged 17.7 points after the All-Star break last season, has seven points on 3-of-13 shooting through the first two games.

    2. Wizards C Marcin Gortat is averaging 13.5 rebounds and shooting 61.1 percent.

    3. The teams alternated season series sweeps over the past five years, with Washington taking both meetings in 2016-17.

    PREDICTION: Nuggets 109, Wizards 107

    Preview: Kings at Suns

    Gracenote
    Oct 22, 2017

The Phoenix Suns have had a woeful time trying to stop teams from scoring, a scenario that prompted the firing of head coach Earl Watson on Sunday. The Suns hope to reverse that trend under interim head coach Jay Triano when they host the offensively challenged Sacramento Kings on Monday.

Watson finished with a 33-85 mark at the helm in Phoenix and watched his team allow an average of 128.7 points during its 0-3 start, with reports of his dismissal surfacing the day after a 130-88 setback against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Kings might offer a little relief as they finish up a three-game, four-day road trip that included a 96-79 setback at Denver on Saturday. Zach Randolph was the lone Sacramento starter to score in double figures and he finished with only 11 points as the team's first five combined to shoot 10-for-38 from the floor. The Kings won three of four meetings last season against the Suns, whose lone victory came on Devin Booker's game-winning jumper.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), FS Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE KINGS (1-2): While the starters struggled mightily at Denver, rookie standout De'Aaron Fox made a splash off the bench with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with five rebounds in a team-high 29 minutes. "The one thing De'Aaron did when he came in was he was aggressive to the rack and we need him to do that," guard Garrett Temple told the media. "But everybody needs to do that, we can't settle for jumpers. If you have an open shot, take it." Forward Skal Labissiere chipped in 13 points but there were very few other contributions for a team that entered Sunday ranked 29th in the league in scoring (90.7) and last in made free throws per game (8.7).

ABOUT THE SUNS (0-3): Phoenix has been outrebounded by an average of 10.6 - the second-largest number in the league - and opponents are shooting an NBA-high 51.5 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from 3-point range. Guard Eric Bledsoe followed up a 28-point performance in a two-point loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday with a four-point, four-turnover effort against the Clippers. Rookie Josh Jackson has at least 11 points in his first three games but has yet to shoot better than 40 percent in a game and has one assist in 84 minutes thus far.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Kings G Buddy Hield shot 1-of-10 against Denver but had 30 points in a win over Phoenix in April.

    2. Suns C Tyson Chandler is averaging 11.5 rebounds while making 8-of-11 shots over his last two games.

    3. Sacramento rookie G Bogdan Bogdanovich (ankle) might make his NBA debut Monday.

    PREDICTION: Suns 106, Kings 104

Philadelphia vs. Detroit, 10/23/2017 19:00 EDT

    Point Spread: -3½/-110 Detroit

    Sportsbook:
    Bookmaker

Detroit enters tis tilt with momentum on their sides as they come off a 111-107 road win vs the New York Knicks on Saturday. The Pistons rallied from a 21-point deficit, outscoring the Knicks 60-43 in the second half. Now they go against a young talented Philadelphia Sixer's group who still cannot find a way to consistently notch victories, losing three straight times to start their campaign, including Saturdays lopsided 128-94 loss to the Raptors. There is a lot of talent in the 76ers lineup, but playing as a group and showing chemistry/flow at the moment seems to be a problem, as their star center Joel Embiid , comes in and out of the lineup , because of his need to rest his surgically repaired knee. Tonight I'm betting the Sixers having more problems , vs a Motown side that has won and covered 6 of the L/7 meetings in this series.

76ers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss.Pistons are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.Pistons are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
DETROIT is 12-2 ATS L/14 in a home game where the total is 210 to 219.5, with the average margin victory of the scores coming by 10.5 ppg.

Play on the Detroit Pistons to cover

    Toronto Maple Leafs -139

The Maple Leafs lay low juice on Monday and given home ice and how well they're playing, this one makes sense.

Toronto is going to be a top team it seems this season in the NHL. The Maple Leafs have won 6 of the first 8 games on the campaign and have won 3 of 4 at home to start the season.

Auston Matthews is on quite the tear here to start the season off as well. He has tallied at least a point in all but one of the first 8 games. He's the energy that this Maple Leafs team feeds off of and will really be a huge impact player on Monday.

Some trends to note. Maple Leafs are 4-0 in their last 4 Monday games.Maple Leafs are 6-1 in their last 7 games following a loss of 3 or more goals.

Toronto is the better team here in this spot, given home ice and how well they are playing on the offensive end.

    Back Toronto.

    Good Luck, Razor Ray.

Philadelphia vs. Detroit, 10/23/2017 19:00 EDT

    Point Spread: -3½/-110 Detroit

    Sportsbook:
    Bookmaker

The Detroit Pistons look like a solid home favorite when they host the Philadelphia 76ers Monday night.

It's just never easy to beat Detroit home in Michigan. They beat Charlotte 102-90 here at Little Caesars Arena on Oct. 18 in their lone home game so far this season and are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

The 76ers are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings in Detroit and 0-2 SU (1-1 ATS) on the road this season. They took a 128-94 beating at Toronto on Saturday their last outing and they're just 6-14 ATS in their last 20 games after allowing more than 125 points in their previous game.

I actually like the 76ers to cause quite a few upsets this season, but this is not one of those spots.

My free pick is on the Detroit Pistons.

    Preview: Kings at Maple Leafs

    Gracenote
    Oct 22, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings have yet to lose in regulation this season, and they hope to keep the streak going Monday as they continue their six-game road trip with a matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Kings, whose only blemish thus far is an overtime loss to Calgary on Oct. 11, began the trek with a 6-4 triumph at Columbus on Saturday.

Captain Anze Kopitar capped a three-point performance by scoring his second goal of the game with 2:14 remaining in the third period as Los Angeles matched the club record for the longest point streak to start a season, which was set when it began 1995-96 with a 4-0-3 mark. Toronto is kicking off a three-game homestand after having its three-game winning streak snapped with Saturday's 6-3 loss at Ottawa. Auston Matthews and William Nylander each recorded a goal and an assist in the setback, which was the first in four road games this season for the Maple Leafs. Matthews has landed on the scoresheet in all but one of his eight contests, registering three two-point efforts over his last four.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), TSN4, TVA (Toronto)

ABOUT THE KINGS (6-0-1): Brooks Laich made his debut for Los Angeles on Saturday, registering two shots and a minus-1 rating in 12 minutes, 7 seconds of ice time. The 34-year-old center collected 134 goals and 197 assists in 764 games with Ottawa, Washington and Toronto before signing a one-year contract worth $650,000 on Thursday. Jake Muzzin is riding a six-game point streak after notching three against Columbus - including his 41st career goal, which tied him with Bob Murdoch for 10th place among defensemen on the franchise's all-time list.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (6-2-0): Roman Polak is back in the fold, as the veteran defenseman agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.1 million contract on Sunday. The 31-year-old Czech, who recorded four goals and seven assists over 75 games last season to begin his second stint with Toronto, has collected 23 tallies and 115 points in 634 career contests with St. Louis, the Maple Leafs and San Jose. The Maple Leafs have won three of their first four home games this campaign, scoring a total of 18 goals in the victories.

    OVERTIME

    1. Kopitar has recorded four multi-point performances in 2017-18, including a pair of three-point efforts.

    2. Of the 20 skaters that have been in Toronto's lineup this season, C Eric Fehr (four games) is the only one yet to record a point.

    3. Los Angeles D Derek Forbort notched an assist on Saturday - two days after signing a two-year contract extension.

PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 5, Kings 4

The New York Rangers ended a frustrating five-game losing streak last time out despite managing just 15 shots and look to build on the result as they host the San Jose Sharks on Monday. Jimmy Vesey, Chris Kreider and Jesper Fast each scored their first goal of the season in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Nashville, which extended New York’s point streak to three contests (1-0-2).

“This was coming,” Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist told reporters after the victory. “It was just a matter of time. Finally, we get the two points. We’ll take a deep breath and we’ll go after another two points Monday.” New York looks to take advantage of the road-weary Sharks, who will play their third game in four nights after dropping a 5-3 decision at the New York Islanders on Saturday despite receiving a hat trick from Logan Couture. San Jose, which started the trip with an impressive 3-0 win at red-hot New Jersey in which Martin Jones turned aside 28 shots, has outshot all but one opponent in the early going. Reigning Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns, who scored a career-high 29 goals last season, leads the Sharks in shots (31) but has yet to tally and is a minus-8 over his first seven contests.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, Sportsnet, NBCSN California (San Jose), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE SHARKS (3-4-0): Couture leads the team with six goals after notching his second career hat trick and is forming a solid duo with Tomas Hertl (four points) on one of San Jose’s top two lines. “He’s big. He’s strong. He’s skilled,” Couture said of Hertl. “He reminds me of (Patrick Marleau) without that top-end speed the way he holds on to pucks. He’s very, very easy to play with.” The power play has produced seven goals in seven games, and the Sharks’ penalty-killing unit is 24-of-25 in the last six contests after giving up two tallies in the season opener.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (2-5-2): Getting Kreider and Vesey their first goals will help with confidence, and it also would be a boost if the veteran Rick Nash (one goal, minus-6 rating), who leads the team with 35 shots, could start scoring. Mika Zibanejad tops the team with five goals but has recorded just one point (an assist) in the last five games, while Kevin Hayes became the only other player with more than two tallies after scoring in each of his last two contests. Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who has registered two goals and five assists, is slated to play his 500th NHL game on Monday.

    OVERTIME

    1. San Jose C Joe Thornton needs four assists to tie Joe Sakic (1,016) for 12th place on the all-time list and is three points away from 1,400.

    2. Lundqvist needs one victory to pass Glenn Hall (407) for ninth place in NHL history.

    3. The teams split last season's two-game series, with each winning at home while a total of 20 goals were scored.

    PREDICTION: Rangers 4, Sharks 3
