Mississippi State (5-2, 2-2) had a couple of hiccups in back-to-back weeks but is back on track with dominating efforts against BYU and Kentucky. The Bulldogs are on the verge of another national ranking and would likely be in the Top 25 with a win over Texas A&M on Saturday.
Junior quarterback Nick Fitzgerald had one of his best games against the Wildcats last week. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 115 yards and two more scores. The sneakily athletic Fitzgerald has rushed for more than 100 yards in two games in a row, with three such performances on the year.
Junior running back Aeris Williams is having a strong season running the ball for Mississippi State, with three 100-yard performances and 594 total yards on the season.
Texas A&M (5-2, 3-1) suffered a disappointing and embarrassing loss in the first week of the season, as UCLA mounted a huge, late comeback for the win. Since then, however, the Aggies have only lost by eight points against No. 1 Alabama, who looks invincible this season. Texas A&M is coming off a 19-17 win on the road against Florida.
Against the Gators, the Aggie defense was impressive. Texas A&M picked off two passes and didn't allow a passing touchdown. No receiver for Florida had more than 40 receiving yards on the game.
Sophomore running back Trayveon Williams has 440 rushing yards and five touchdowns for the Aggies.

Kenan Stadium will play host to a Saturday afternoon college football matchup between the 8th ranked Miami Hurricanes and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Miami has won their first six games to start the season and sits atop the Coastal Division of the ACC Conference standings. On Saturday, Miami QB Malik Rosier threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team to a 27-19 victory over visiting Syracuse. The Hurricanes forced four turnovers on the afternoon.
Through six games, Miami ranks 20th in total offense and is putting up 33.3 points on average. North Carolina is one of the worst defenses in the country, ranking 109th in yards allowed and surrendering 34.6 points per game.
The North Carolina Tar Heels enter this contest as the only team in the ACC without a conference victory. North Carolina’s only victory of the season came against Old Dominion by a 53-23 final score. Another season is exposing the weakness of the Pac-12 among Power 5 conferences, as members have lost big games against talent from outside the league. No. 11 USC took a 35-point loss last week against Notre Dame. The Trojans allowed 337 rushing yards and were beaten up on the line all day.
Junior running back Ronald Jones II, who has been good all season, had just 32 rushing yards on 12 attempts against the Fighting Irish. Despite that poor performance, Jones has eclipsed 100 yards four times on the season, with eight trips to the end zone. His best game came in the season opener, when he went for 159 yards with three touchdowns against Western Michigan.
Junior receiver Deontay Burnett has been unstoppable for USC, with 739 receiving yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Arizona State (4-3, 3-1) has long been a team that is tough to pin down, with big wins and perplexing losses over the last several seasons. The Sun Devils are coming off two great wins against No. 7 Washington and Utah. They are tied at the top of the Pac-12 South leaderboard with USC, adding extra incentive to get the win at home.
Sophomore receiver N'Keal Harry is blossoming into a star, with 627 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The underclassman out of Chandler, Arizona has gone for at least 70 yards in four of the last five games. He's been a high-volume target as well, with nine grabs against the Huskies and eight against the Utes.

Arizona escaped with a close win over a conference opponent recently. The game ended 45-44 in favor of Arizona against California in double overtime. Now the Arizona Wildcats need to continue to win against Pac 12 opponents. They are 5-2 on the year and could secure a respectable bowl appearance with more victories. Head coach Rich Rodriguez is making adjustments that could send the team to a post season bowl. That could salvage a season that featured a couple disappointing losses along the way.
Look for QB Khalil Tate to factor in to the equation as a leader. Arizona is 3-0 with Tate taking most of the snaps as QB. He has run for 7 touchdowns on the field and averages 57.1 yards per rushing carry. Other offensive weapons will keep Arizona competitive against many opponents. Their defense will need to limit scoring opportunities during the entire game. They have given up many touchdowns, which has kept their games close throughout the season so far.
Washington State will travel on the road to play at Arizona Stadium. The Wildcats are now 6-1 and could still win the Pac-12 conference. They enjoyed an impressive 28-0 win over Colorado in their last game. Fans watched their defense prevent scoring opportunities and helped the team win big. Head coach Mike Leach is pleased with the progress of his team. They could use another conference win against a talented opponent. That might put them in line for a College Playoff appearance.

The meeting between No. 16 NC State and No. 13 Notre Dame will be one of the best matchups of the weekend. The hard-nosed Wolfpack defense will match up with an Irish offense that scored 49 points against USC last week.
NC State (6-1, 4-0) has looked great the last two weeks, with convincing wins against No. 17 Louisville and Pittsburgh. The Wolfpack held the Panther rushing game to just three yards per carry while surrendering just four conversions on 15 third-down attempts. Pittsburgh had the ball for 10 minutes longer but gained 120 yards less than NC State.
Junior running back Nyheim Hines has exceeded the 100-yard mark on the ground the last three games and has racked up at least 90 yards in five straight. He's found the end zone four times in the last three contests.
Notre Dame (6-1) is building a great resume, with five-straight wins and its only loss coming by one point against Georgia. The Fighting Irish throttled USC last week, behind 377 rushing yards. They also forced three turnovers and converted on 7 of 13 third-down tries in the game.
Junior running back Josh Adams rushed 19 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns against the Trojans. Adams is beginning to look like a potential Doak Walker candidate, with 967 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the year. He's logged at least 150 rushing yards in four games, despite never carrying the ball more than 19 times.

Texas football is clearly struggling in many ways during their season. They have a new coach in Tom Herman, who has replaced Charlie Strong during the year. But the team is faced with a losing record midway through their season. They have to win big against conference opponents to get in line for a post-season bowl game. Texas is now 3-4 and will have to travel on the road to play against Baylor. They lost their latest game against Oklahoma State by a score of 13-10.
Look for Texas QB Shane Buechele to play an important role for the team as well. The sophomore QB has seen limited playing time so far in 2017. But a new game could introduce plenty of opportunities for him on the field. He is completing 68.8% of his passes so far during the 2017 season. The QB has plenty of offensive weapons at his disposal once the Longhorns take the field. Their conference record is 2-2, so they could use a win on the road against.
Baylor has had a disappointing year of their own so far. They are 0-7 and lost another game to a conference opponent. West Virginia narrowly defeated Baylor by a final score of 38-36. Still, Baylor is now faced with a winless season if they can't turn things around soon. Head coach Matt Rhule wants to see the team finish on a high note. A win at home against Texas would boost team morale.

TCU is rolling and certainly looks worthy of its impressive top-five national ranking after crushing lowly Kansas 43-0 in a game where you got the feeling the Horned Frogs could have score a hundred points had they wanted to embarrass their Big 12 rivals from the north. Iowa State is on a nice roll as well and has been a pleasant surprise in the Big 12 this season, winning three in a row including a thorough 31-13 handling of Texas Tech over the weekend.
Kenny Hill has completed 70 percent of his attempts this season for 1,728 yards with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions to pace a stellar TCU offense that generates 41.6 points per game (9th in the nation). Hill has also run for two scores. Darius Anderson averages 5.8 yards per carry for 532 yards with six touchdowns to pace the TCU ground attack while John Diarse and Jalen Reagor each average more than 16 yards per reception and have combined to catch six TDs. The Horned Frogs have thrown TD passes to 11 players in 2017.
Jacob Park has 1,181 yards passing and nine TDs for Iowa State which has a plum bowl berth in sight and needs a good showing this week. David Montgomery has contributed 642 yards on the ground and eight TDs while Hakeem Butler leads the receivers with 377 yards and three scores. Iowa State scores 35 points per game and allows 20 ppg to rank in the top 40 in the nation.

The Tennessee team that lives on Rocky Top may feel like they are at rock bottom as they head to Kentucky for another SEC east game. Tennessee has scored fewer points than any other SEC school this year, and the Vols have not had an offensive touchdown in more than three games.
Kentucky, at 5-2, may be licking its chops at the prospects, after having been the SEC East doormat for years, and an almost guaranteed win for Tennessee for many years.
Kentucky is led by Stephen Johson who has passed for 1355 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions. He has also run for 198 and two more touchdowns. Benny Snell has rushed for 541 yards and six touchdowns. Kentucky is averaging 201 yards passing and 136 rushing. The Wildcats are averaging 24.6 points and giving up an average of 24.7.
Tennessee switched quarterbacks a couple of weeks ago to try to jumpstart its offense, which is not really worked. Jarrett Guarantano has passed for 231 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, and that is over two games as a starter. The Vols have seven touchdown passes this year, and has given up seven interceptions.
John Kelly leads the rushing game with 615 yards, six touchdowns and has a 4.9 yards per carry average. Kelley also has the most receptions and has 255 yards receiving. Two more receivers have around 250 yards receiving.

San Diego State opened the season on a tear, reeling off six consecutive victories. The last two weeks the Aztecs have crashed and burned, looking pathetic on offense last Saturday in a 27-3 loss to rival Fresno State. Hawaii stopped a four-game losing streak with a 37-26 win over San Jose State to pick up its first Mountain West Conference victory this season.
Rashaad Penny is having a terrific season (1,115 yards rushing, 10 TDs) but he's been wrapped up tight the last two weeks, averaging roughly three yards per carry in a pair of sub-100-yard efforts that featured only one trip to the end zone. The Aztecs need him back on track to fuel an offense that ranks 89th in scoring, putting up 26.9 points per game. Christian Chapman has 1,285 passing yards and eight TDs to lead the 114th ranked passing attack while Mikah Holder has 383 yards receiving but no touchdowns.
Dru Brown leads the way for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. He's completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,816 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He's also been sacked 14 times which explains the trouble the Rainbow Warriors have had scoring - 27.7 points per game. Diocemy Saint Juste is a handful out of the backfield, cracking the 1,000-yard barrier last week with his third 200-yard game of the season. He's scored six touchdowns. John Ursua has five touchdown receptions and 667 yards as one of the deadly Brown's top receiving threats.

One guarantee over the last several years in the Mountain West Conference is that Boise State is going to compete for the league title. The Broncos are off to a 3-0 start in conference play this season, despite being exposed a couple of times in the nonconference slate.
Boise State (5-2, 3-0) has beaten its three MWC opponents – New Mexico, No. 19 San Diego State and Wyoming – by at least 10 points each. The Broncos are coming off a 24-14 win. They held Josh Allen, one of the nation's best quarterbacks, to 12 of 27 passing with two interceptions.
Sophomore running back Alexander Mattison has been great the last few weeks, with at least 90 rushing yards in each game and three touchdowns. On the season, Mattison has 503 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Utah State (4-4, 2-2) has had an up-and-down season, but the Aggies are coming off a 52-28 thrashing of UNLV. They outscored the Rebels 24-0 in the second half after entering the locker room with the scoreboard reading 28-28.
Senior running back LaJuan Hunt had his best game of the season, with 101 rushing yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns. He's been active in both the rushing and passing games this season. He's carried the ball at least 10 times in six games and caught at least two passes six times as well.
The Aggies have had trouble identifying their quarterback, but freshman Jordan Love was great against UNLV, with 19 of 27 passes completed for 316 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

San Jose State and BYU meet up on Saturday in Provo as two of the worst teams in the FBS this season. The pair have combined for just two wins, with 14 losses. One of them has to come out on top this weekend.
The Spartans (1-7) have taken all of their losses except one by at least 17 points this season. They're coming off their closest loss – a 37-26 defeat against Hawaii. That was one of the best games from freshman quarterback Montel Aaron, who completed 17 of 27 passes for 322 yards with a pair of touchdowns and one interception.
It's been a rough season for the San Jose State rushing game. As a team, the Spartans average just 3.2 yards per carry. As far as scoring goes, San Jose State has punched in just one touchdown on the year.
The Cougars (1-7) have a long list of problems this season. Perhaps the defense is stout enough to keep the team in games if BYU can score more points, but it's allowed at least 35 points four times this season.
Junior quarterback Tanner Mangum put up good numbers against East Carolina last week, with 26 of 41 passes completed for 319 yards and a pair of touchdowns. However, it's just his first 300-yard passing performance this season, after logging five 300-yard performances as a freshman.
Freshman running back Ula Tolutau has looked good in shades for the Cougars. He'll improve at ball security this season as he gains more experience.

Iowa has lost three of its last four games, and high hopes for the season have turned to disappointment for the Hawkeyes. Will they be looking to take their frustrations out on Minnesota when the Gophers visit this weekend? It may not be that easy though, as both teams are 4-3 and have had their moments.
Four games ago Iowa was 3-0 and they lost to Penn State on the final play of the game. Two more Big 10 losses have come by seven points each and one of those was in overtime.
Minnesota got back on the winning track last week with a seven-point win over Illinois. The Gophers had three straight losses before that, and two of those were by a touchdown or less.
Both teams are averaging about 350 yards on offense, with Iowa focusing more on the passing game. Iowa is giving up 381 per game and Minnesota is giving up 317 per game. Michigan State and Northwestern are both quietly winning games in an unspectacular fashion. A win is a win though, and they meet this coming Saturday at Northwestern.
Michigan State has a win over then No. 7 Michigan to its credit and has won its last four games. Last week's eight-point win was the largest margin of victory in all of those four games. Michigan State is now ranked 16th and just a game behind in the Big 10 East.
Northwestern got a 17-10 win over Iowa last week and has two conference losses to the top teams.
Michigan State is holding teams to 16.9 points per game, which is 14th nationally. The Spartans are averaging 22.7 points on offense. They have a balanced offense at that, averaging 195 yards passing and 177 rushing.
Brian Lewerke has passed for 1362 yards, 10 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has also run for 313 yards and three more touchdowns and is the second leading rusher on the team. LJ Scott has run for 495 yards and six scores.

Florida Atlantic (4-3, 3-0) is starting to roll with new head coach Lane Kiffin at the helm. In the last three weeks, the Owls have scored 38, 58 and 69 points to become one of two unbeaten Conference-USA teams. Last week against North Texas, they were fueled by 804 total yards of offense, including 447 yards on the ground and 9.3 yards per carry.
Sophomore running back Devin Singletary led the rushing attack with 123 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns. Singletary has rushed for at least 100 yards in each of the last five games. He's found the end zone at least one in the last six games and has 14 touchdowns on the season.
Senior running back Gregory Howell Jr. is also having an effective season for Florida Atlantic. He's rushed for 473 yards and three touchdowns.
Western Kentucky (5-2, 3-1) is also playing good football. The Hilltoppers have won four-straight games and are one of five three-win teams in the league. They escaped Old Dominion last week with a 35-31 win despite being outscored 17-0 in the third quarter.
Against the Monarchs, senior quarterback Mike White had another all-time performance, with 24 of 34 passes completed for 304 yards and five touchdowns. In the last two weeks combined, White has thrown for 10 touchdowns with just one interception.
White has spread the ball around. While no Western Kentucky receiver has more than 350 yards, four have at least 20 receptions and 200 yards.

Buffalo (3-5, 1-3) needs to get its season back on track in order to compete for a bowl bid, and the Bulls will have their hands full this weekend as they travel to take on Akron. The Zips lead the MAC east, while Buffalo has just one league win.
Despite losses in the last three weeks of play, Buffalo has played close games. The Bulls have lost by an average of less than five points per game. Last week, however, they went on the road and took a 10-point defeat against Miami-Ohio.
Junior wide receiver Anthony Johnson is having an amazing season for Buffalo. He has already amassed 49 receptions for 827 yards and six touchdowns. Johnson put up 195 yards against Western Michigan a few weeks back and followed that up with 140 yards against Northern Illinois. He has nearly three times as many receiving yards as the next-best Bulls target.
Akron (5-2, 3-1) had a perfect start to MAC play before being crushed by Toledo last week. The Zips allowed 626 total yards, including 303 on the ground, in the loss. They, on the other hand, got nothing going on the ground, with just 42 total rushing yards and an average of 1.8 yards per carry.
Junior wide receiver Kwadarrius Smith has been a good deep ball threat for Akron this year. He has 411 receiving yards and four touchdowns. In four games, Smith has reeled in a reception for more than 35 yards.
