    Preview: Clippers at Pelicans

    Gracenote
    Nov 11, 2017

The New Orleans Pelicans found a groove during an impressive road trip and they will try to translate their success to the home court against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. After a 3-5 start that featured three home losses, the Pelicans went 3-1 on their swing and the only loss was a four-point setback in the finale at Toronto.

The star duo of Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins combined for 38 points and 22 rebounds - both well below their season averages - and New Orleans had just enough sloppy moments while falling to 5-3 on the road. "Off our turnovers and their second shots, they ended up with 38 points," coach Alvin Gentry told the medai. "That's a lot of points to give up in an NBA game." The Clippers have been scoring enough points but making far too few stops on the other end during a four-game losing streak, including Friday's 120-111 setback at Oklahoma City. Guard Patrick Beverley (knee) and forward Danilo Gallinari (glute) were both absent and star forward Blake Griffin was 5-of-19 from the floor in the setback.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-6): Los Angeles is 1-6 since a 4-0 start and opponents are averaging 114.3 points during the four-game slide. It was competitive on Friday only because of reserve guard Lou Williams, who hit six 3-pointers en route to 35 points in 39 minutes. Beverley has already been ruled out for Saturday's game while Griffin could probably use some rest after averaging 18.3 points - more than four below his season average - on 34 percent shooting during a three-game stretch and playing 40 minutes Friday night.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (6-6): While Davis and Cousins were somewhat kept in check at Toronto, guard Jrue Holiday erupted for season highs of 34 points and 11 assists. "Jrue played incredible (Thursday)," Cousins told reporters. "It sucks that we couldn't give him the help that he deserved tonight and to help pull out this win. He had a huge night, he carried us the entire night, and like I said, it just sucks that we couldn’t be a supporting cast for him." Cousins averaged 31.5 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in two games against the Clippers last season while still with Sacramento.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Williams is averaging 24.7 points while making 11 3-pointers in a three-game stretch.

    2. The Pelicans released veteran F Josh Smith on Friday.

    3. The Clippers won two of three meetings last season.

    PREDICTION: Pelicans 111, Clippers 105

    Preview: Kings at Knicks

    Gracenote
    Nov 10, 2017

The New York Knicks are winners of six of their last eight games, but the health status of star forward Kristaps Porzingis is concerning. The Knicks hope to have Porzingis back on the floor when they host the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

Porzingis sat out a 112-99 loss at Orlando on Wednesday with elbow soreness and indicated to reporters that it is an ongoing issue. "It bothers me a little bit but not that bad," Porzingis said, according to the New York Post. "It's always, I have to get the swelling down and then I'll be fine again. But I think once the season's over I might have to do something about it. I just can't keep going like this every year." The Kings are winners of back-to-back games after dropping seven in a row and are watching their own young players try to become stars. Rookie point guard De'Aaron Fox went 4-of-13 from the floor on Thursday but knocked down the most important shot of the contest with a go-ahead jumper in the final seconds to seal a 109-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

    TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE KINGS (3-8): Fox, 19, is averaging 12.3 points in 27 minutes off the bench and is earning the respect of the team's veterans. "For that guy, at that age, to be able to take that shot after the shooting night that he had, even when the play may not have been drawn up that way, that just shows guts," veteran guard Garrett Temple said, according to the Sacramento Bee. "A lot of guts, a lot of gall to be able to take that shot and make it. Pure." Fox logged 11 more minutes on Thursday than starting point guard George Hill, who managed two points on 0-of-4 shooting in 19 minutes.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (6-5): Porzingis became the unquestioned star of the Knicks when Carmelo Anthony was traded on the eve of training camp and is optimistic about the direction of the team. "I think we have better fundamentals," Porzingis told the New York Daily News. "Defensively, we're going after it every night. We may not do it 48 minutes, but there are parts of the game where we actually lock in. We do our defensive system the right way. And we just play hard. That's the main difference." Porzingis is leading that defensive effort with an average of 2.3 blocks while putting up 30 points on 51.2 percent shooting at the other end of the floor.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Kings PF Zach Randolph is averaging 18.3 points over the last four games and posted a season-high 20 on Thursday.

    2. Knicks SF Tim Hardaway Jr. is averaging 21.7 points over the last seven games after putting up 9.8 in the first four.

    3. New York took both meetings last season despite Porzingis going a combined 12-of-37 from the floor.

    PREDICTION: Knicks 106, Kings 99

    Preview: Grizzlies at Rockets

    Gracenote
    Nov 10, 2017

The Houston Rockets are back to doing what they did last season - letting James Harden be one of the best players in the game while leading the team to victories. Harden will try to guide the Rockets to a fifth consecutive win when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

Harden followed up a 56-point, 13-assist performance in a win over Utah on Sunday with a triple-double on Thursday, collecting 35 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds and five steals in a 117-113 win over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. "We rely on him, and we'll always rely on him," Houston coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters of Harden. "...But when you're a superstar, you're going to carry the team a lot of times." The Grizzlies take pride in stopping the opposition's best players and limited Damian Lillard to 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting in a 98-97 win at Portland on Tuesday. "Defense has a lot to do with communication," Memphis center Marc Gasol told reporters. "It allows you to see a little bit of what's going to happen, maybe half a second or a second early, and it brings also trust. The guy on the ball knows where you're going to be at and then you get a little bit higher and more into it and you just trust the next guy behind you, and that's what defense does for you."

    TV:
8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (7-4): Memphis wrapped up a 2-1 west coast trip with the win at Portland and is seeing Houston for the third time already in 2017-18. The Grizzlies had little trouble stopping Harden and company in those first two games, holding the Rockets to an average of 89.5 points and limiting Harden to 21 points on 35.9 percent shooting. Memphis did not have a starter score in double figures in a 103-89 home win over Houston on Oct. 28 but is getting better production of late from point guard Mike Conley, who reached 20 points in each of the last three games.

    ABOUT THE ROCKETS (9-3):
Houston acquired Chris Paul over the summer to take some of the load off Harden, but Paul has been out since the season opener with a knee injury and is not expected back until next week. "I do see in a week or so that we'll get Chris Paul back and take a lot of that off of (Harden)," D'Antoni told reporters. "The season's long. (Thursday's) focus was to win this game. Then we've got to worry about Saturday." Harden logged 43 minutes on Thursday and is averaging 36.2 minutes while putting up 29.9 points, 10 assists and 4.9 rebounds.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Rockets PF Luc Mbah a Moute (knee) sat out Thursday and is day-to-day.

    2. Memphis SG Ben McLemore (foot) is expected to make his season debut on Saturday.

    3. Rockets SG Eric Gordon scored exactly 20 points in each of the last three games.

    Preview: Cavaliers at Mavericks

    Gracenote
    Nov 10, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers are losers of six of their last eight games and stand as one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA. The Cavaliers will get a chance to get themselves right on the defensive end when they visit one of the worst offensive teams in the league in the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

Cleveland allowed its opponent to score at least 112 points in each of the last 10 games, capped by a 117-113 loss at Houston on Thursday that kicked off a four-game road trip. "I thought with the effort and the energy, if we play like that every night we'll be a lot better," Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue told reporters of the defense after holding the Rockets to 46.8 percent shooting in the loss. "They had us scrambling around early. ... Overall, I thought we were flying around defensively and trying to run guys off the 3-point line, contesting shots." The Mavericks had yet to reach 112 points in a game until breaking out in a 113-99 win at the Washington Wizards on Tuesday that snapped a six-game slide. "You know, I thought everyone did a great job chipping in," Dallas forward Harrison Barnes, who scored a season-high 31 points, told reporters. "It was a great win for us."

    TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cleveland), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (5-7): James missed most of the preseason due to ankle issues and rolled his left ankle in Thursday's loss. "It's been the story of the early season for me kind of turning my ankles," James, who plans to play on Saturday, told reporters. "Just lace them up tighter and get back out there." James delivered 33 points in 40 minutes in the loss and is averaging 29.3 points on 60.1 percent shooting, 8.9 assists and seven rebounds in 38 minutes -- second-highest minutes average in the league heading into play on Friday.

    ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (2-10):
Dallas hasn't had much reason for optimism this season aside from flashes of brilliance from rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr., who scored a season-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds and eight assists in the win over Washington. "Dennis Smith was a great basketball player tonight," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters after the game. "He was great in all areas. He demonstrated aggression, poise, smarts and leadership, and it's great to see. He's worked so hard and it's been frustrating, obviously, at times, but to have it come together on the road in really a must-win game with where we're at is really great to see. Now, he's just got to duplicate it." Smith is averaging 18.5 points over the last four games.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Cavaliers reserve F Jeff Green scored a season-high 27 points on Thursday -- his first 20-plus outing of the campaign.

    2. Mavericks PF Dirk Nowitzki scored in single figures in each of the last three games.

    3. Dallas snapped a four-game losing streak in the series with a 104-97 win at home on Jan. 30.

    Preview: Lakers at Bucks

    Gracenote
    Nov 11, 2017

It was known that Lonzo Ball's passing skills were superior to his shooting but the Los Angeles Lakers rookie has been dreadful while hoisting shots through his first dozen NBA games. Ball is shooting a porous 29.2 percent from the field entering Saturday's road contest against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ball, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, has shot 30 percent or less in 10 of his 12 NBA games while averaging 8.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 6.9 assists. "He's an incredible player. He's 20 years old," Lakers coach Luke Walton told reporters. "But any time you turn on any sports show, all they talk about is his shot. Is it extra pressure? One hundred percent. He's a rook who gets dissected by everybody." Bucks coach Jason Kidd was a 10-time All-Star point guard and he has heard Ball being compared to him and he feels that is highly unfair. "We are jumping the gun a little bit," Kidd told ESPN. "Let's enjoy and watch this young kid play and then we will make the comparison at 40 games."

    TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, Spectrum Sports Net (Los Angeles), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (5-7): Ball's latest poor shooting effort came in Thursday's 111-95 loss to the Washington Wizards when he went 3-of-12 from the field. "I really don't even care, to be honest," Ball told reporters of people criticizing his shooting motion. "I know I've got to just keep shooting and just improve it every game." Ball hasn't even been the best first-round pick on the Lakers with that title going to forward Kyle Kuzma, who has six consecutive double-digit scoring performances while averaging 14.8 points and 6.5 rebounds.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (5-6): Recently acquired point guard Eric Bledsoe was in the starting lineup in his first game with the team and had 13 points and seven assists in Friday's 94-87 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. "I felt good out there, my teammates made it easy on me," Bledsoe said afterward. "I have the easy job. At the end of the day, it's basketball. We made great plays throughout the game and kept our composure at the end. It's all about winning." Reigning Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon was moved to a reserve role and had nine points and seven assists in 34 minutes as Milwaukee halted a four-game slide.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The teams split two meetings last season but the Bucks have won six of the past nine.

    2. Milwaukee star SF Giannis Antetokounmpo posted his sixth double-double of the season with 28 points (matching his second-lowest output of the campaign) and 12 rebounds against the Spurs.

    3. Los Angeles C Brook Lopez is averaging just 12.5 points over the past two games after averaging 27.3 over the previous three contests.

    PREDICTION: Bucks 108, Lakers 101

    Preview: Bulls at Spurs

    Gracenote
    Nov 11, 2017

The Chicago Bulls are playing so poorly that team president Michael Reinsdorf is fielding questions about the job security of third-year coach Fred Hoiberg. The Bulls possess the third-worst record in the NBA and will try to halt a three-game losing streak when they visit the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.

Chicago dropped to 1-4 at home with Friday's 105-87 setback against the Indiana Pacers, a defeat that came just hours after Reinsdorf addressed Hoiberg's status. "We have to see, but right now we're happy," Reinsdorf told reporters. "The team is playing hard. Fred's got them playing hard. It's not going unnoticed." San Antonio is 3-2 on a six-game homestand after dropping a 94-87 decision against the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday in a sloppy showing featuring 18 turnovers. "We played pretty poorly for most of the game and they played better," Spurs guard Manu Ginobili said afterward. "We adjusted to their defense late in the game but it was too late. It's hard to win an NBA game with 18 turnovers."

    TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN Chicago, FSN Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE BULLS (2-8): Third-year forward Bobby Portis posted double-doubles in his first two games of the season while averaging 20.5 points and 12 rebounds. Portis was suspended for the first eight games of the season after punching forward Nikola Mirotic (broken facial bones) during a preseason practice and indicated the strong outings are a product of his offseason work. "I put a lot of work in over the summer," Portis said after Friday's loss. "On my jump shot, my low post game and everything and feel like I've tuned everything to get it to be an NBA player. This is a big year for me."

    ABOUT THE SPURS (7-5):
Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge has been able to thrive as a focal part of the offense with All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard (quadriceps) out and scored 20 or more points in 10 of 12 games. He had 20 points and 12 rebounds against Milwaukee for his fifth double-double of the season and is scoring in a way that is reminiscent of his five straight seasons of averaging more than 21 points per game for the Portland Trail Blazers. Veteran small forward Rudy Gay had just six points on 3-of-12 shooting against the Bucks after scoring 20 or more in two of the previous three contests.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Aldridge scored 28 points as the Spurs registered an 87-77 road victory over the Bulls on Oct. 21.

    2. Ginobili scored a season-best 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting against the Bucks.

    3. Chicago C Robin Lopez had three points on 1-of-7 shooting against the Pacers after scoring 20 on 10-of-11 shooting in the club's previous game against the Toronto Raptors.

    PREDICTION: Spurs 97, Bulls 85

    Preview: 76ers at Warriors

    Gracenote
    Nov 10, 2017

The Golden State Warriors don't even need their full complement of superstars on the floor to destroy opponents anymore, though they're happy to have them all together. The Warriors expect to get Kevin Durant back when they host the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

Durant (thigh) sat out against Minnesota on Wednesday and Golden State still cruised to a 125-101 win behind Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. "I actually kind of like these games when we have to sit somebody, in a weird way," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters. "It's good for our team. We're lucky we are in a position where we have so much talent that we can afford to miss one of our main guys and still be able to compete at a high level." The 76ers aren't at the same level as Golden State yet but are dealing with higher expectations thanks to an exceptionally talented young core and watched a five-game winning streak come to an end with a 109-108 loss at Sacramento on Thursday. "It's a tough one, for sure, but it's a lesson," small forward Robert Covington told reporters. "We're going to go back and watch the small things, and what we're going to do is learn from the mistakes, fix them, and then move on to the next one."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (6-5): Philadelphia is happy to finally be at the point of working on the small things and is starting to believe it should be winning tight games. "We had been doing well closing out games," 76ers coach Brett Brown told reporters after the loss to the Kings. "That's part of young guys learning how to play smarter, and how to execute better when it matters most." One of those young guys is center Joel Embiid, who missed a potential game-winning jumper but finished with 22 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and three blocks after sitting out the opener of the trip at Utah.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (9-3): Curry is averaging 25.4 points and 6.5 assists and flirted with a triple-double on Wednesday -- totaling 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists -- which prompted a reporter to ask teammate Draymond Green if Curry was "peaking." "I've seen crazier. However, he's been playing well," Green said of Curry, who won back-to-back MVP Awards and was voted to the award unanimously in 2015-16. "But, yeah, I've seen him do way more. Peaking? That's just ridiculous." The Curry-led Golden State offense is leading the NBA in scoring (119.1 points), assists (31) and field-goal percentage (51.6).

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Covington is 20-of-37 from 3-point range in the last four games.

    2. Warriors PG Shaun Livingston (knee) left Wednesday's game and is day-to-day.

    3. Golden State took the last eight in the series.

    Preview: Magic at Nuggets

    Gracenote
    Nov 11, 2017

Emmanuel Mudiay spent the bulk of the second half of last season watching from the bench while Jamal Murray took his job and heard his name thrown around in trade talks as a result, but it appears he is very much a part of the Denver Nuggets' plans now. The third-year pro looks to continue his recent offensive surge Saturday when the Nuggets wrap up a six-game homestand against the Orlando Magic.

Mudiay, who was limited to 55 games in 2016-17 due to injury, scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter en route to Thursday's 102-94 victory over Oklahoma City, giving Denver six wins in its last eight games. Coach Mike Malone called the backup guard "the MVP of the night" for his efforts versus the Thunder in a postgame interview, and the former No. 7 overall pick has made his presence felt offensively during the Nuggets' 6-2 stretch, scoring at least 15 points six times. The Magic shined in the opener of their four-game road swing against Western Conference foes Friday, riding 22 points from Aaron Gordon to a 128-112 victory over Phoenix. Orlando is off to its best 12-game start since going 9-3 in 2011-12 and has won three straight on the road.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (8-4): After converting 28.8 percent of his long-range tries last season, Gordon continued to show his improvement beyond the arc is no fluke, as he nailed both of his attempts Friday to lift his 3-point shooting percentage to 57.5 - the second-best mark in the NBA. Elfrid Payton returned from an eight-game absence with a hamstring injury Wednesday with 11 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in 29 minutes of action, but he showed some rust Friday by committing six turnovers in only 17 minutes. No. 6 overall pick Jonathan Isaac enjoyed the finest performance of his brief NBA career versus the Suns, scoring a season-high 11 points and pulling down six boards in 21 minutes.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (7-5): Mudiay's season-best scoring effort was only a small part of the solid 49-point effort Denver got from its bench Thursday, as Mason Plumlee and Will Barton each pitched in 13 points; the trio combined to shoot 17-of-29 from the field to offset the 21-for-53 showing from the starters. Paul Millsap struggled the most among the first five with a 6-for-17 effort and continued to misfire beyond the arc - 2-of-14 over the last four games - but the four-time All-Star made up for it a bit Thursday by matching a career high with six blocks. Since averaging 23.3 points on 60 percent shooting over a three-game stretch from Oct. 29-Nov.1, Murray is scoring 6.3 points per game on 36 percent from the field in the past four outings.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Mudiay on Friday became the first Nuggets' player - since Denver joined the NBA in 1976-77 - to score at least 21 points in a game with 10 or fewer shots and no more than one free-throw attempt.

    2. Orlando has buried at least 13 triples in four of its last six contests and in six games overall this season. The Magic's 40.6-percent conversion rate beyond the arc ranks second in the league.

    3. Since losing its first two games when C Nikola Jokic recorded a double-double, Denver has won each of its last six such contests.

    PREDICTION: Nuggets 118, Magic 104

    Preview: Timberwolves at Suns

    Gracenote
    Nov 11, 2017

The Minnesota Timberwolves have already proven they are capable of making noise in the Western Conference, but their last outing was a reminder of how much more progress they need to make in order to be considered a serious contender. The Timberwolves attempt to rebound from their most lopsided defeat of the season Saturday when they visit the Phoenix Suns.

Minnesota won seven of its first 10 contests - its best 10-game start since going 9-1 in 2001-02 - and took its first five-game winning streak since the 2008-09 season into Golden State on Wednesday, but an 18-4 third-quarter run proved to be its undoing in a 125-101 loss to the Warriors. “We got humbled … that’s the kind of level we want to get to, the way they’re playing over there,” Timberwolves forward Taj Gibson told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Northwest Division leaders will go from facing the league's highest-scoring team to its second-worst defense in the Suns, who are 0-3 on their six-game homestand and have lost five in a row overall. Phoenix dropped a 128-112 decision at home against Orlando on Friday, surrendering at least 120 points for the third time during its skid.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN North Plus (Minnesota), FSN Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (7-4): Jimmy Butler and Jeff Teague were outscored by Warriors' backcourt of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson 60-25 on Wednesday, and it sounds as if Butler doesn't intend on letting that happen again anytime soon. "I just know what I can bring to the table in all aspects of the game. I know the reasons they wanted me here and a big part of it is scoring, closing out games, guarding, getting everyone involved. So I'll be a new player from here on out," Butler told the Star-Tribune. After shooting a combined 38.8 percent from the field over his previous six outings, Andrew Wiggins is converting 57.5 percent of his field-goal attempts over the least three games.

ABOUT THE SUNS (4-9): First-round pick Josh Jackson gave Phoenix what it hopes becomes a regular occurrence in Friday's loss, going 9-of-18 from the field for a season-high 18 points and tying another personal best with six rebounds while playing only 22 minutes. Alex Len managed to stay out of foul trouble against Orlando for one of the first times this season and finished with season highs in points (21) and minutes (40) while also corralling 13 rebounds. Mike James continued to be one of the Suns' few bright spots during their losing streak, posting his third straight game with at least 16 points and two 3-pointers; the 27-year-old Lamar product is averaging 14 points over his last seven outings despite a two-point effort on Nov. 3.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Wednesday's setback was only the second time in nine games the Timberwolves lost with Butler on the court.

    2. Len's two blocked shots Friday allowed him to pass Clifford Robinson (292) for sole possession of 10th place on the Suns' all-time blocks list.

    3. Teague handed out only five assists against the Warriors after averaging 10.4 during Minnesota's five-game winning streak.

    PREDICTION: Timberwolves 121, Suns 98
