    Preview: Pistons at Pacers

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy knew that a portion of the schedule filled with road games would provide a real test for his fast-starting squad. The Pistons failed the first section of that test and will try to rebound when they continue a three-game road trip at the Indiana Pacers on Friday.

After sweeping five straight at home to run its record to 10-3, Detroit began a span in which it plays nine of 11 on the road with a 99-95 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday. The Bucks blocked 16 shots and held the Pistons to 35.3 percent from the field, including a combined 4-of-18 by point guards Reggie Jackson and Ish Smith. "That's the game right there, absolutely," Van Gundy told reporters of the blocked shots. "That's 16 opportunities you don't even get the ball up on the rim. When you look at the stat sheet, it's really hard to figure out how the game was close. ... It was a frustrating night. We really didn't do anything well. I couldn't find any offense to run to help us." The Pacers, who were one of Detroit's five victims during its recent 5-0 homestand, won 116-113 at Memphis on Wednesday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, FS Indiana

ABOUT THE PISTONS (10-4): Guard Avery Bradley was one of the only Detroit players to find an offensive rhythm on Wednesday, finishing with a season-high 28 points while making 6-of-10 3-pointers. The defensive stalwart is averaging 22.2 points while hitting 48.6 percent of his long-range attempts in six games this month, with his 14-point effort against Indiana the only one of the bunch in which he fell shy of 20. Rookie Luke Kennard continued to earn more playing time and finished with 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench.

ABOUT THE PACERS (7-8): Veteran point guard Darren Collison averaged eight points on 36.5 percent shooting during Indiana's recent 1-5 swoon, but his ability to break out of the slump was the catalyst Wednesday night. "I didn't want to make any excuses, but my knee actually felt great today," Collison told reporters after producing a season-high 30 points. "It's something that has been affecting me like the last week-and-a-half." The Pacers nearly coughed up a 17-point lead in the final nine minutes, prompting coach Nate McMillan to say that they "played three solid quarters of good basketball."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Pistons SF Tobias Harris made five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points in the win over the Pacers last week.

    2. Indiana SG Victor Oladipo scored 21 points Wednesday and has a season high-tying four straight games of at least 20 points.

    3. The Pacers won five straight meetings at home.

    PREDICTION: Pistons 107, Pacers 105

    Preview: Heat at Wizards

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

The Washington Wizards won the battle of backcourts on the road against the Miami Heat on Wednesday and will try to make it two in a row over their Southeast Division foes when they host the back half of the home-and-home set on Friday. John Wall and Bradley Beal combined for 53 points in Wednesday's 102-93 triumph at Miami.

The victory improved the Wizards to 6-0 when holding an opponent under 100 points, and the team knows that a consistent effort on defense is the key to success. "That is our go to," Beal told the Washington Post of holding teams under 100. "When we do that, it is proven. We have success keeping teams under 100 and getting wins. When we continue to have that defensive mindset, we are a really good team. We showed a lot of glimpses of it (Wednesday)." The Heat are trying to find consistency on both ends, and coach Erik Spoelstra would like to see his team improve its mental approach. "It's neck up for us to be able to build this mental resiliency and be able to put our best game out there and sustain it for 48 minutes," Spoelstra told reporters. "That doesn't necessarily guarantee you anything, either. But we have these pockets during the course of games where we're just simply inconsistent during those stretches."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Miami), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE HEAT (6-8): One player who appears to be putting in consistent effort for Miami of late is center Hassan Whiteside, who is averaging 16.3 points and 15.8 rebounds over the last four games. Whiteside had his effort questioned and was benched in the second half of a loss at Golden State on Nov. 6, but has since averaged 30.5 minutes while avoiding foul trouble and playing solid defense in four contests. Whiteside could use some help up front from power forward James Johnson, who is 5-of-16 from the floor over the last three games while averaging 5.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 25.3 minutes.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (9-5): Beal is struggling with his shooting stroke over the last two games, going 11-of-30 from the floor and 2-of-12 from beyond the arc, but is making up the difference by attacking the basket. The 24-year-old hit all three of his free-throw attempts in a win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday and then went straight at the Miami defense on Thursday, going to the line 14 times and knocking down 13 to improve his season percentage to 83.7 from the stripe. Washington outscored Miami by 13 points at the line on Wednesday by going 29-of-31 while the Heat were 16-of-19 from the stripe.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Heat PF Okaro White underwent surgery on Thursday to repair the fractured fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

    2. Wizards SF Otto Porter Jr. shot 54.5 percent or better from the floor in each of his last 10 games.

    3. Miami won in both of its trips to Washington last season by a total of six points.

    PREDICTION: Wizards 105, Heat 101

    Preview: Jazz at Nets

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

The only team the Utah Jazz were able to solve over the last two weeks was the Brooklyn Nets, who seek a measure of revenge when they host the Jazz on Friday night. Utah is 1-6 since its 5-3 start, with the lone win coming in a 114-106 decision over the Nets at home on Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Losses to Minnesota - also at home - and at New York to begin a four-game road trip have the Jazz once again searching for answers, particularly on the road, where they are the only NBA team without a victory (0-5). "I want us to play well and eventually we'll get a road win," Utah coach Quin Snyder told the media at Madison Square Garden. "It's harder to win on the road, especially with a younger team." The Nets are 2-7 since their 3-2 start but gave the red-hot Boston Celtics a test before falling 109-102 on Tuesday to begin a three-game homestand. Six players scored in double figures for Brooklyn, which hit 14-of-35 3-pointers while losing its third straight at home.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE JAZZ (6-9): Rodney Hood has taken a liking to his new role off the bench and he scored a season-high 30 points against the Knicks, but there was no enjoyment after his team blew a 12-point lead in the second half. "This one will sting a little bit," Hood told reporters. "It was one of the better games we've played in a while." Hood is averaging 18 points while making 44.7 percent of his 3-pointers off the bench, compared to 16 points and 36 percent in his eight starts.

ABOUT THE NETS (5-9): Rondae Hollis-Jefferson finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss to the Celtics to continue a nice stretch for the third-year swingman, who is averaging 15.3 points and 7.7 boards in his last three games and shooting a career-high 49.2 percent. "I think it’s basketball development," coach Kenny Atkinson told the New York Post. "I think it's emotional development. He's maturing. He doesn't get down on himself nearly as much when he makes a mistake. He really focuses on next play mentality. He's really improved in that area." Caris Levert scored 15 points off the bench in Tuesday's loss while making 6-of-7 shots.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Nets leading scorer PG D'Angelo Russell (knee) missed the loss to Boston and is expected to sit out a few more.

    2. Jazz SF Joe Ingles has hit 12-of-20 3-pointers on the road.

    3. Utah won three straight meetings overall and three consecutive games in Brooklyn.

    PREDICTION: Nets 105, Jazz 103

    Preview: Clippers at Cavaliers

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers are enjoying their first three-game winning streak of the season and are finally feeling good about the way they're playing. The Cavaliers will try to keep the good feelings coming and earn a fourth consecutive win when they make a brief stop at home to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

Cleveland dropped a 117-113 decision at Houston to begin the trip but knocked off Dallas two days later and came alive in the second half to pull out wins at New York and Charlotte. "Initially we started off the road trip in Houston and we felt like we played better ball," LeBron James told reporters. "We gave ourselves a chance to win that game, we did a lot of good things, and I think that carried on throughout a lot of spots on this road trip. So 3-1, at this point, we'll take that and hopefully use that momentum going back home and get a win." The Clippers are not enjoying quite as much success of late and limp into Cleveland to begin a five-game road trip losers of six in a row. "My job is to make sure these guys know that we just can't accept it. You may lose, but you can't accept it," Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers told reporters. "You have got to keep wanting to find a way to win that game. We are clearly in that stage right now. We've just got to find a way to squeeze out a win somewhere and then get another one, get another one and then get a guy back and then get another one and then now you're fixed."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-8): Los Angeles has been off since a 109-105 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday in which it allowed 32 fourth-quarter points. Guard Austin Rivers went 3-of-13 from the floor in that setback and is trying to keep his team's spirit up. "We can't afford to keep our heads down," Rivers said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "The games keep coming. Even if you wanted to keep your head down, it's not going to do you no good. We've got some guys playing their (butts) off but we're losing games. So we've got to figure ways to help in other ways. ... We all can do more. I can go down the line. Everybody. It's on us. It's on the core of the group to get this done."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (8-7): James scored 31 points in the 115-107 win over the Hornets and took some time out after the game to praise the NBA's new scheduling, which includes fewer back-to-backs on the road. "We're old, man," James, 32, told reporters. "Whenever we get a chance to stay over for the night this season, we have to do that." James is averaging 28.3 points on 57.9 percent shooting with 8.7 assists and 7.3 rebounds in a league-high 38.1 minutes.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Rockets SF Danilo Gallinari (glute) and PG Patrick Beverley (knee) are both doubtful for Friday.

    2. Cavaliers PG Derrick Rose (ankle) sat out the entire road trip and is questionable for Friday.

    3. Los Angeles took both meetings last season after Cleveland won the previous four matchups.

    PREDICTION: Cavaliers 112, Clippers 102

    Preview: Knicks at Raptors

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

The Toronto Raptors are soaring on the offensive end and will try to stay hot when they host the New York Knicks on Friday in the opener of a quick two-game homestand. The Raptors scored at least 119 points in each of their wins during a 4-1 stretch, with the lone loss a one-point setback against the dominant Boston Celtics on the road.

Toronto turned some heads by winning both ends of a road back-to-back at Houston and New Orleans while scoring an average of 127 points. "I think we're just playing together, understanding the game plan each and every night," guard Kyle Lowry told the media after the 125-116 victory over the Pelicans. "I think everyone is locked into what we're trying to do. We're a good team." The Knicks are making the same claim amid an 8-3 stretch, although seven of the wins have come at home and they lost each of their last seven games against Toronto. Tim Hardaway Jr.'s late 3-pointer lifted New York to a 106-101 win over Utah on Wednesday to cap a 2-1 homestand.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), Sportsnet ONE (Toronto)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (8-6): Hardaway scored four points on 2-of-11 shooting in the opener of the homestand before averaging 27 points, eight rebounds, 5.5 assists and making 7-of-17 3-pointers over the next two contests. The emerging star had 14 of his 26 points in Wednesday's win in the fourth quarter, including seven in the final 32 seconds as he thrived on the energy at Madison Square Garden. "It was awesome," Hardaway told reporters. "Those are the moments you live for; you live for and you dream of when you're a kid. Come into a grand stadium like this and making game-winners, making go-ahead baskets and playing defense and giving the fans what they want."

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (9-5): It is no wonder that Lowry's emergence from an early slump has keyed Toronto's offensive surge, as the veteran point guard is finding the rhythm that carried the squad many times last season. "Coaches are preaching when you've got open looks, take them and be aggressive in all the things that you do," he told the media. After missing all four of his shots and getting ejected in a loss to Washington on Nov. 5, the 31-year-old was shooting 37.6 percent from the floor, but he's at 48.3 percent while averaging 19 points in five games since.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Raptors SG DeMar DeRozan averaged 32 points in four wins against the Knicks last season.

    2. New York PF Kristaps Porzingis is averaging 21 points - nearly eight below his season average - over the last two games and shot below 50 percent from the field in consecutive outings for the first time this season.

    3. Toronto SF C.J. Miles hit a combined 11-of-18 3-pointers in the wins over Houston and New Orleans.

    PREDICTION: Raptors 119, Knicks 111

    Preview: Hornets at Bulls

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

The Charlotte Hornets fell apart in the second half of a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday and suffered their fifth consecutive loss. The Hornets won’t face a team with quite as much offensive firepower as the Cavaliers on Friday, when they visit the lowly Chicago Bulls.

Charlotte was swept on a four-game road trip but looked refreshed early while scoring 67 first-half points at home against the Cavaliers before slumping to 40 after the break and dropping a 115-107 decision. The Hornets are making a brief trip before coming home for three straight games beginning on Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers and are looking to turn things around against the Bulls, who are riding their own five-game slide and are tied for the fewest wins in the NBA. Chicago trailed by at least 20 points at the end of the first quarter in each of its last two games and could not find much offense in Monday's 92-79 setback at Oklahoma City. "At the start of the game we haven't been able to get it going," Bulls rookie forward Lauri Markkanen told reporters. "We have to come out and play hard. ... If we are competing at the level that we have been practicing, then we are going to win a lot of basketball games. But we have to give ourselves a chance and come out the gates playing hard. When the game starts we have to be ready to play."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (5-8): Wednesday's loss did contain two positives for Charlotte with the return of shooting guard Nicolas Batum and a strong performance from forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Batum sat out the first 12 games recovering from an elbow injury and went 7-of-15 from the floor en route to 16 points in 32 minutes while adding six assists and five rebounds on Wednesday. Kidd-Gilchrist scored a season-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting - 12 points better than his previous season high.

ABOUT THE BULLS (2-10): Chicago committed to a rebuild by trading away Jimmy Butler and buying out Dwyane Wade over the summer, and the inconsistency of the young roster is on display nightly. Kris Dunn, a second-year player acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the deal that sent Butler away, made his first start on Wednesday and struggled, scoring three points on 1-of-11 shooting in 29 minutes. "I think the whole season is going to be part of the learning process for us," Dunn told the team's website. "We are young and we need to learn how to grow, improve, take it to another game and try to learn from it."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Charlotte SG Treveon Graham (quad) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

    2. Chicago SG Justin Holiday left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their child and is questionable to return on Friday.

    3. The Bulls took two of the three meetings last season, including a 118-111 win in the lone matchup in Chicago.

    PREDICTION: Hornets 110, Bulls 96

    Preview: Thunder at Spurs

    Gracenote
    Nov 16, 2017

A favorable portion of the schedule allowed the Oklahoma City Thunder to get back to .500, but the level of difficulty is about to go up. The Thunder commence the challenging stretch Friday night when they put a three-game winning streak on the line with a visit to the San Antonio Spurs.

After leaving the AT&T Center, Oklahoma City will visit a dangerous New Orleans team before hosting Golden State and Detroit to finish up a span against four opponents who entered Thursday a combined 18 games over .500. The stretch comes on the heels of victories over three losing squads - all at home - including a 92-79 win over Chicago on Wednesday. The Spurs won five of six before falling flat in a 98-86 loss at Minnesota, as leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge was held to 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting in the team's worst offensive effort of the season. "Guys competed and tried to give ourselves a chance, but I thought we had some key breakdowns at bad times," Aldridge told reporters.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Oklahoma, FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (7-7): Carmelo Anthony (back) returned from a one-game layoff to notch his first double-double with Oklahoma City, but he struggled from the floor along with fellow stars Paul George and Russell Westbrook. The trio shot 13-for-38 against the Bulls, which left them taking pride in a defensive effort that held Chicago to seven first-quarter points and a 34.7 percent mark from the field for the game. "[It was] the commitment to making multiple efforts on the defensive end, scrambling, being disciplined, doing what we work on and practice on a consistent basis," Anthony told reporters.

ABOUT THE SPURS (9-6): Foul trouble limited Aldridge to 28 minutes in the loss to Minnesota, his second-lowest total of the season, and it was tough to find reliable offensive options for a team still waiting for Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker to make their season debuts. "He has been the main actor of our offense and playing without him is hard," guard Manu Ginobili told the San Antonio Express-News. "We got used to relying on him to score and create. So when he got into foul trouble we ran out of resources. It's just harder when he's not on the court." Ginobili shot 1-of-6 as he and six other reserves combined for just 26 points.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Thunder entered Thursday ranked second in the NBA in scoring defense (97.1 points), while the Spurs were tied for third (98.9).

    2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams (calf) missed three games in a row and is questionable for this one.

    3. San Antonio won two of three meetings last season and claimed four in a row at home.

    PREDICTION: Spurs 101, Thunder 96
