    Preview: Missouri at Arkansas

    Gracenote
    Nov 22, 2017

Two teams headed in opposite directions square off Friday, when red-hot Missouri visits Arkansas in a Southeastern Conference clash. Missouri has won five straight games – all by at least 28 points – while Arkansas has dropped two straight and five of its last six.

The Tigers have dubbed their comeback from a 1-5 start the “Keep It Rollin’ Baby Tour,” and they have kept it rolling in impressive fashion. Missouri is coming off a 45-17 win at Vanderbilt, which marked its closest contest during the winning streak and made the Tigers bowl-eligible for the first time since 2014. The Razorbacks’ only wins since the start of October were a pair of one-point victories over Ole Miss and Coastal Carolina, although they gave No. 16 Mississippi State a scare last week before losing a 28-21 decision. The game could be the last at Arkansas for coach Bret Bielema, who has posted an underwhelming 29-33 record in five seasons with the school.
TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Missouri -10

ABOUT MISSOURI (6-5, 3-4 SEC): Although quarterback Drew Lock leads the nation with 38 touchdown passes – two shy of the SEC single-season record, it has been a resurgent running game that has re-ignited the Tigers’ offense. Missouri has topped 175 rushing yards in five straight games, with senior Ish Witter (822 yards, four touchdowns) and freshman Larry Rountree III (577, six) leading the way. The defense has undergone a dramatic turnaround as well, holding five straight opponents under 400 total yards after doing so only once in the first six games.
ABOUT ARKANSAS (4-7, 1-6): The Razorbacks have been hurt by injuries, and the offense has been hit especially hard. Arkansas has topped 400 total yards only twice in SEC play and has not surpassed 300 passing yards in any game this season with Austin Allen and Cole Kelley splitting time under center. The defense has been torched at times but kept the Razorbacks in the game against Mississippi State with nine tackles for loss and four sacks, and it will need to get pressure on Lock to give the secondary a chance.

    EXTRA POINTS
    1. Lock has thrown at least three touchdown passes in seven straight games.
    2. Arkansas is 14-1 under Bielema when rushing for at least 250 yards, a total Missouri has allowed twice this season – to Georgia and Auburn.
    3. Missouri freshman TE Albert Okwuegbunam has nine touchdown receptions, tied for the most in the nation by a tight end.

    PREDICTION: Missouri 41, Arkansas 27

Preview: South Florida at Central Florida

    Gracenote
    Nov 21, 2017

The annual War on I-4 has never been more important as undefeated Central Florida hosts South Florida on Friday afternoon with a spot in the American Athletic Conference Championship on the line. The 12th-ranked Knights have rolled along while scoring at least 31 points in all 10 victories while USF dropped one contest to Houston, but its senior-laden lineup is primed to reach their first conference title game.

“We’ve really been waiting for this game since last year,” UCF junior receiver Tre’Quan Smith told reporters of last season’s 48-31 loss - the second straight in the series. “We all remember what happened last year and basically, it’s like payback. We’re ready to go to war.” The Knights are led by sophomore quarterback McKenzie Milton, who has thrown for almost 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns while completing 69.6 percent of his passes for the nation’s top scoring offense (48.2). Senior quarterback Quinton Flowers keys the South Florida offense with 17 scoring strikes and nine touchdowns on the ground with a team-high 870 rushing yards while the Bulls are tied for second in the nation with 17 interceptions. “We have not put together a complete game yet,” USF coach Charlie Strong told reporters. “It’s maybe one half on offense and then the next half the defense steps up. … In all three phases, we have yet to see a complete game and we need a complete game this game. That’s what it’s going to take - a total team effort.”

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: UCF -11

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (9-1, 6-1 AAC): Flowers has been the most prolific offensive player in school history and rushed for at least 119 yards in three of his last four games, but completed 53.5 percent of passes during his senior season thus far. The Bulls have plenty of offensive weapons to support Flowers with senior running backs Darius Tice (860 yards, 10 TDs rushing) and D’Ernest Johnson (715, seven) along with senior receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (48 catches, 737 yards). USF will need a big effort from its inconsistent defense, which is led by senior linebacker Auggie Sanchez (school-record 378 career tackles) and has allowed 19.9 points per contest.

ABOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA (10-0, 7-0): Milton, who threw for 225 yards with two interceptions against USF last year, has not been picked off while tossing six touchdown strikes in the last two contests. Smith is the top target for Milton with 44 catches for 850 yards and 11 scores, and sophomore running back Adrian Killins Jr. is a key home run threat with 629 yards along with eight touchdowns on the ground. “(Killins) might not fit a lot of schemes but he definitely fits ours,” UCF coach Scott Frost told reporters as his team goes for its first AAC title game appearance. “He’s not the biggest guy in the world but he’s got elite speed, and we knew we could use that in our system.”

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Flowers needs 146 yards to become USF’s all-time rushing leader, passing Marlon Mack, and 96 to break Matt Grothe’s team total offense record (10,875).

    2. UCF junior LB Pat Jasinski boasts at least six tackles in nine straight games and leads the way with 76 for UCF, which leads the nation in turnover margin per game (plus-1.6).

    3. The Bulls have won six of the eight all-time meetings after scoring at least 44 points in each of the last two showdowns.

PREDICTION: South Florida 34, Central Florida 31

    Preview: Iowa at Nebraska

    Gracenote
    Nov 21, 2017

Iowa found itself ranked as high as 20th in the College Football Playoff rankings coming off an unlikely thrashing of Ohio State earlier this month, but the offense that was so proficient against the Buckeyes has returned to its early-season form. The Hawkeyes may catch a bit of a break in that regard in their final regular-season contest, however, when they travel to Nebraska on Friday to face the worst defense in the Big Ten as the teams battle for the Heroes Trophy.

Entering its Nov. 4 meeting with Ohio State, Iowa had scored fewer than 20 points in four of its first five conference games, but the Hawkeyes rolled up 487 yards on a one-loss team en route to a 55-24 victory. The Hawkeyes fell 38-14 at No.4 Wisconsin the following week and mustered only 258 yards last week in a 24-15 loss to Purdue to give the Boilermakers their first conference road win of the season. The Cornhuskers may provide a bit of a soft landing, however, as they have surrendered league-worst marks of 34.6 points and 429.9 yards under first-year defensive coordinator Bob Diaco. During the 1-5 slide that may very well mark the beginning of the end for third-year coach Mike Riley, Nebraska is coughing up an average of 43.2 points and 510 yards - numbers made worse after giving up 609 yards in last weekend's 56-44 defeat at No. 11 Penn State.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Iowa -3

ABOUT IOWA (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten): Akrum Wadley ranks seventh in the conference in rushing with 862 yards and needs 138 to become the fourth player in program history to produce back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons and the first since Fred Russell in 2002-03. Linebacker Josey Jewell, who is one of the five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, leads the Big Ten and ranks third in the nation with 11.7 tackles per game; his 117 stops are nine shy of matching his career high. Josh Jackson paces Division I in interceptions (seven) - one shy of tying the school record - and passes defended (24); the junior cornerback also ranks third in FBS in pass breakups (17) and interception return yards (163).

ABOUT NEBRASKA (4-7, 3-5): Stanley Morgan Jr. (Big Ten-best 91.2 receiving yards per game), who produced a career-high 185 yards on seven catches against Penn State, ranks second in the conference in receiving yards (912) - 31 shy of topping former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers' school record. JD Spielman has already set school freshman receiving records for yards (830) and receptions (team-high 55). Tanner Lee went 19-for-22 for 327 yards in the second half versus the Nittany Lions after going 7-for-15 for 72 yards before the break; he has not thrown an interception in four of his last five games and is 62 yards shy of becoming the fourth Nebraska quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a season.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Iowa is 9-2 in trophy games since the start of the 2015 season and has won three of the last four meetings in this rivalry, including both games in Lincoln.

    2. Morgan (second) and Spielman (seventh) already rank inside the top 10 in school history in single-season receiving yards and are the first Nebraska duo to top 800 receiving yards in the same season.

    3. Hawkeyes QB Nate Stanley (23) needs four more touchdown passes to tie Chuck Long's single-season school record.

    PREDICTION: Iowa 34, Nebraska 24

    Preview: Virginia Tech at Virginia

    Gracenote
    Nov 21, 2017

Virginia Tech tries for its 14th consecutive victory over Virginia when it visits the Cavaliers on Friday, but the No. 25 Hokies should find the going much tougher than they did in last season's 52-10 rout. "(They’re) a much-improved, completely different football team than we played a year ago,” Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente told reporters about Virginia. “You can see that across the board in how they play, the belief in what they’re doing.”

The Cavaliers have lost four of their last five games, including a 44-28 setback at No. 2 Miami last week in which the Hurricanes scored the final 30 points. The Hokies, meanwhile, needed a game-ending goal-line stand to defeat Pittsburgh 20-14 last week to a snap a two-game slide that included a 28-10 loss at Miami. The rigors of a college season are taking their toll on Virginia Tech freshman quarterback Josh Jackson, who has dealt with a smattering of injuries but told reporters, "I feel fine.'' Jackson completed 65.6 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions in his first six games but only 54.3 percent with four TDs and two picks in his last four contests.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Virginia Tech -7

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (8-3, 4-3 ACC): Senior wide receiver Cam Phillips (2,981 yards) is the school's all-time leading receiver by yards, surpassing Isaiah Ford (2,967 from 2014-16) after recording eight receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown last week. Junior running back Travon McMillian (team-high 434 yards, two TDs) carried only once last week before leaving with a leg injury, with Fuente telling reporters that "he didn't want to push it.'' Junior linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (team bests of 93 tackles, 49 solo) and senior linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka (second with 82, 40) have 3.5 sacks apiece, and sophomore defensive end Trevon Hill (4.5 sacks) also contributes heavily to a defense that is No. 6 nationally in fewest points allowed at 14.6.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (6-5, 3-4): Senior quarterback Kurt Benkert (25 touchdowns, eight interceptions) needs 101 yards to set the school record for passing yards in a season (2,976) set by Matt Schaub in 2002. Benkert's favorite targets are junior running back Olamide Zaccheaus (794 yards, five TDs), and senior wide receivers Doni Dowling (614, five) and Andre Levrone (603, seven), who are the first trio of Cavaliers to record 600 or more yards apiece in a season. Senior linebacker Micah Kiser (115) and senior safety Quin Blanding (104) are the only teammates from a Power 5 conference team to each have 100 or more tackles, with Blanding's 462 career tackles the most in school history and No. 1 among active FBS players.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Virginia Tech is headed for its 25th consecutive bowl game while Virginia is bowl-eligible for the first time since 2011.

    2. Virginia junior RB Jordan Ellis paces the ground attack with 790 yards and six touchdowns but has averaged 49.2 yards over the last five games and scored only one TD in his past seven contests.

    3. Virginia Tech leads the series 56-37-5 and has won 17 of the last 18 meetings.

    Preview: Texas Tech at Texas

    Gracenote
    Nov 21, 2017

Rivals Texas and Texas Tech have plenty to play for on Friday night. The visiting Red Raiders need a win or they will miss a bowl game for the third time in four seasons.

The Longhorns became bowl-eligible last week and want to build on their end-of-season momentum. "I think that's what makes this game so important, is that momentum," first-year Texas coach Tom Herman said. "We need to build on the momentum that we have right now. We've got confident kids in that locker room and winning this one would go a long way to building upon that." Texas will lean on its defense - which is allowing 19.4 points and 355.9 total yards in Big 12 Conference play - to slow the Red Raiders. Texas Tech averages 35 points and 475.1 yards but struggles in the red zone are a concern.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Fox. LINE: Texas -10.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (5-6, 2-6 Big 12): Nic Shimonek has thrown for 3,451 yards and 28 touchdowns, while junior Keke Coutee (1,074 receiving yards, nine touchdowns) needs 69 yards to crack the school's single-season top 10 in receiving yards. Leading rusher Justin Stockton (649 yards, four touchdowns) recorded his fifth career 100-yard game last week and the Red Raiders should have injured Tre King (575 yards, four touchdowns) back this week. Texas Tech ranks 127th out of 129 FBS teams in red zone offense (64.7 percent), failing to score inside the 20 with four turnovers on downs, five turnovers and eight missed field goals.

ABOUT TEXAS (6-5, 5-3): Herman said freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger (1,564 yards, nine touchdowns, five interceptions) will start but sophomore Shane Buechele (1,344 yards, six touchdowns, four interceptions) will get some snaps during the game. The return of left tackle Connor Williams helped the Longhorns rush for 233 yards last week behind Daniel Young (270 yards, two TDs) and Ehlinger (333 yards, two TDs). Junior defensive back DeShon Elliott, who is ranked second nationally with six interceptions to go along with 57 tackles, was named one of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Texas junior P Michael Dickson, who leads the nation with 48 yards per punt after breaking the school record at 47.4 yards last year, is one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award.

    2. Texas Tech leads the Big 12 with 23 takeaways and has forced at least one turnover in each game for the first time since 2009.

    3. Texas LB Breckyn Hager (18 tackles, four sacks) will miss the first half Friday after being ejected last week for targeting.

PREDICTION: Texas 38, Texas Tech 20

    Where: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California

    Preview: California at UCLA

    Gracenote
    Nov 21, 2017

UCLA will take the field Friday night against visiting California in a Pac-12 regular-season finale at the Rose Bowl, the Bruins' first game since coach Jim Mora was fired. Mora was let go Sunday with one game left in his sixth season at UCLA, and one day after UCLA lost to cross-town rival USC for the third consecutive year.

Jedd Fisch will finish the season as the interim coach at UCLA, and the Bruins need to beat California to become bowl-eligible. UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen has publicly praised Mora for developing him into one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football this season, so it'll be interesting if the coaching change affects Rosen. The Golden Bears are facing their own challenges after losing three of their past four to remain one win from automatically qualifying for a postseason game. The Bruins allowed a season-low 153 rushing yards against USC, moving them one spot up to second-to-last among 129 FBS teams in rush defense at 288.7 yards allowed per game, so expect a lot of carries from California running back Patrick Laird, who has combined for 367 rushing yards in the past two games.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1. LINE: UCLA -7.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (5-6, 2-6 Pac-12): None of the key offensive players who led the Golden Bears to a 36-10 victory against UCLA last season will play in this game, so it will be up to Laird and sophomore quarterback Ross Bowers to move the ball. Bowers had multiple interceptions in three of the first four games this season, but that's happened just once in the past seven games. Taking better care of the football hasn't resulted in more victories, however.
ABOUT UCLA (5-6, 3-5): Jordan Lasley has been another bright spot in an otherwise down year for the Bruins. He became the fourth UCLA receiver with at least 200 receiving yards in a game when he caught 10 passes for a career-high 204 yards and three touchdowns against USC. Theo Howard has also come on strong after leading receiver Darren Andrews went down with a season-ending knee injury on Nov. 3, catching 11 passes for 81 yards in the latest game.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. California K Matt Anderson needs one field goal to give him 57 for his career and break Doug Brien's school record .

    2. Rosen owns the career school record for 300-yard passing games with 17.

    3. Lasley has seven 100-yard receiving games in his career, tied for fifth-most in program history.

    PREDICTION: UCLA 38, California 27
