    Preview: Wisconsin at Minnesota
    Gracenote
    Nov 22, 2017

The math remains a bit murky for No. 4 Wisconsin and its goal of finishing in the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings, but all it can do is win the rest of its games. A loss would almost certainly doom the Badgers, who will try to avoid an upset and finish out a perfect regular season when they visit Minnesota on Saturday.

Wisconsin is the lone undefeated team left in the Big Ten and has already wrapped up its spot in the Big Ten Championship game by winning the West Division, but a lackluster non-conference slate and a conference schedule that didn't feature any of the top three teams from the East division -- Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State -- in the regular season leaves the team with a questionable resume. "We always talk about focusing on the now," freshman wide receiver Kendric Pryor told reporters after a 24-10 win over Michigan last week. "So, week one we were just focusing on Utah State and now since we're closer to the end of the season we have those goals in the back of our minds, but each week we just try to focus on who our opponent is and what we need to do that week to beat them. Last week, our focus was just Michigan, not worrying about Minnesota, Big Ten championship or College Football Playoff." The Golden Gophers are sixth in the seven-team Big Ten West and followed up their best win of the season - a 54-21 triumph over Nebraska - with their worst loss while getting shut out 39-0 by Northwestern last week. "It's unfortunate. It hurts. It's not pretty, whatsoever," Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck told reporters. "There's no excuses for it, and it 100 percent falls on my shoulders."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Wisconsin -17.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten): The Badgers lead the Big Ten in scoring defense (13.1 points) and are second in the Big Ten in rushing offense at an average of 239.3 yards, led by freshman running back Jonathan Taylor. Taylor, who is third in FBS with 1,657 yards, recorded 87 of his 132 yards after the break on Saturday, and Wisconsin takes pride in being a strong second-half team. "We're a team that's going to fight no matter what and definitely during the second half we know it's time to tighten up," Taylor told reporters. "So, we go in at halftime and say it's time to play Badger football, that's one thing that we really harp on."

ABOUT MINNESOTA (5-6, 2-6): The Golden Gophers committed five turnovers in the loss to Northwestern as sophomore quarterback Demry Croft threw three interceptions and finished with 43 yards on 2-of-11 passing. Croft is at his best when the Minnesota running game is working, and he ran for 183 yards and three scores on just 10 carries in the win over Nebraska. The Golden Gophers scored 20 of their 29 offensive touchdowns on the ground with Rodney Smith (895 yards, three TDs) and Kobe McCrary (476 yards, eight TDs) leading the way but will be going up against a Badgers run defense that leads FBS with an average of 79.4 yards allowed on the ground.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. The Badgers are winners of a school-record 14 consecutive Big Ten games.

    2. The Golden Gophers have dropped the last 13 in the series, evening the all-time rivalry at 59-59-8.

    3. Wisconsin CB Nick Nelson became the first player to return a punt for a TD for the Badgers since 2012 when he ran one back 50 yards last week.

    Preview: Penn State at Maryland
    Gracenote
    Nov 22, 2017

Although it had loftier expectations - especially after a 7-0 start - Penn State still has a chance to carry plenty of momentum into bowl season. The 11th-ranked Nittany Lions seek their third straight victory to close out the regular season when they visit Maryland in a Big Ten clash Saturday afternoon.

Behind a big game from Saquon Barkley (224 total yards, three touchdowns) and Trace McSorley (325 passing yards, three TD passes and one rushing score), Penn State rediscovered its dominant offense in a 56-44 win over Nebraska last week, and it now faces a team that's surrendered at least 31 points in six of eight conference affairs. "Offensively from a positive standpoint, rushed for 263 yards, zero turnovers, which I'm really proud of as a coach," coach James Franklin told reporters this week when he discussed defeating the Cornhuskers. "The weather conditions weren't great. Not putting the ball on the ground at all, not making any poor decisions with the ball, things like that, I was really proud of that." The Terrapins have dropped three in a row but they gave No. 22 Michigan State all it could handle in a 17-7 loss at East Lansing last week. In snowy conditions, Maryland allowed the Spartans to complete 2-of-14 passes for 20 yards.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Penn State -22

ABOUT PENN STATE (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten): While the offense is chugging along, the Nittany Lions' defense has sprung some leaks amid a rash of injuries, and it allowed Nebraska to put up 34 second-half points. "Got to be better in our man-to-man coverage, especially at the line of scrimmage," Franklin told the media. "We didn't have any takeaways. I think this is the first week we didn't have any defensive takeaways. I think the week before we had a special teams takeaway. We got to be better there." In addition to the injuries, Penn State will play a third straight game without standout linebacker Manny Bowen (violation of team rules) and will play the first half without senior safety Troy Apke, who was ejected for targeting last week.

ABOUT MARYLAND (4-7, 2-6): Sophomore Max Bortenschlager, the fourth-stringer to start the season, returned from a one-game absence to make his eighth start of the year last week and was 13-for-25 with 121 yards. Ty Johnson leads the way on the ground with 805 yards and five TDs, but he has failed to reach the 100-yard mark in the last seven games. Fellow junior D.J. Moore, the Big Ten's leader in receptions with 72 and yards with 933, needs six grabs to set the single-season school record.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Franklin served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterback coach during a tenure with Maryland from 2008-10.

    2. McSorley needs nine yards to become the first Nittany Lions quarterback to have multiple 3,000-yard campaigns.

    3. Penn State has a 37-2-1 series advantage, including a 38-14 victory at home last year.

Iowa State still has a long-shot possibility of facing Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game. But for the upstart Cyclones to have any chance of getting an invite to Arlington, Tex., to play the Sooners on Dec. 2, they first need to finish conference play with a road victory at Kansas State on Saturday.

That's obviously a tough task, especially when you consider that the Wildcats have won nine straight in the series including 31-26 last season in Ames. But Iowa State, which was picked ninth in the Big 12 preseason media poll, has far exceeded all expectations this season, knocking off two top-five ranked teams in the same season for the first time in school history including a shocking 38-31 win at Oklahoma on Oct. 7. To get to the Big 12 title game, the Cyclones would need a number of dominoes to fall in their favor, the biggest of which would be Baylor (1-10, 1-7 Big 12) going on the road and upsetting TCU (9-2, 6-2) on Friday. Still, a win at Kansas State would be one for the record books for the Cyclones who have never won more than five games in conference play.

    TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Kansas State -3

ABOUT IOWA STATE (7-4, 5-3 Big 12): The big question going into the game is the health of sophomore running back David Montgomery who ranks second in the Big 12 in rushing (98.2 yards per game) and had 144 in last week's 23-13 win at Baylor before leaving with an ankle injury. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said X-rays on the ankle were negative, and he's hopeful Montgomery, who has six 100-yard games this season, will be able to go with sophomore Sheldon Croney Jr., who has 88 yards on 16 carries and one TD this season, his likely replacement. Freshman Zeb Noland, who completed 14-of-28 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions at Baylor, is the likely starter at quarterback with Kyle Kempt expected to miss the game with an arm injury.

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (6-5, 4-4): The Wildcats became bowl eligible for the eighth straight year with a 45-40 win at Oklahoma State last week, their first win over a top-10 team since 2012. Quarterback Skylar Thompson, a freshman making just his second start, completed 10-of-13 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for a team-high 93 yards while wide receiver Byron Pringle caught four passes for 166 yards, including touchdowns of 47, 46 and 60 yards. Linebackers Trent Tanking and Jayd Kirby rank seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Big 12 in tackles while junior corners D.J. Reed (13) and Duke Shelley (12) are 1-2 in the Big 12 in passes defended and have combined for six interceptions.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Iowa State is the only FBS team in the nation this year without a lost fumble.

    2. Kansas State senior PK Matthew McCane leads the Big 12 with 21 field goals in 26 attempts, including a long of 54 yards.

    3. Cyclones senior WR Allen Lazard leads the team in receptions (55), receiving yards (704) and TD catches (9) and has caught at least one pass in 46 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the NCAA.

Preview: North Carolina at North Carolina State

    Nov 22, 2017

North Carolina will try to salvage what has been a dismal season Saturday by knocking off host North Carolina State in the 107th meeting of the ACC rivals. The Tar Heels come in riding a two-game winning streak while the Wolfpack are sputtering after losing three of their last four games.

The first order of business for the Tar Heels is to account for N.C. State senior defensive end Bradley Chubb, a Chuck Bednarik Award finalist who has 10 sacks and 22 tackles for loss this season. "You've got to make sure you know where he's at," North Carolina coach Larry Fedora told the media. "And your tackles, there's not a time where they can take a play off, because if they do, he's going to make you look really bad." The Wolfpack defense has played well for the most part, but has allowed 30 or more points four times - all losses. The North Carolina offense, meanwhile, went six games without breaking 20 points, but has since hit its stride by scoring 34 and 65 in back-to-back wins.

    TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU. LINE: N.C. State -16.5

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (3-8, 1-6 ACC): After a difficult beginning, Nathan Elliott has settled into the role of starting quarterback for the Tar Heels. The sophomore has thrown for 475 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions in the last two games and has formed a connection with sophomore Anthony Ratliff-Williams, who has 10 catches for 163 yards and two scores over that span. "We've built a little momentum with all these young guys that are playing, and every positive thing that can happen for us is important," Fedora told the media. "Anytime you can create momentum, it's good for your program."

ABOUT NC STATE (7-4, 5-2): The Wolfpack have no shortage of weapons on offense and chief among them is Jaylen Samuels, who has accounted for a team-high 14 touchdowns (10 rushing). The 5-11 senior tight end is effective as a runner and receiver, and has racked up 1,901 all-purpose yards this season for coach Dave Doeren, who is in search of his fourth win against the Tar Heels. Junior quarterback Ryan Finley has thrown for 2,996 yards but only 16 touchdowns, including four apiece to Samuels, Jakobi Meyers and Kelvin Harmon.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Chubb has had back-to-back seasons of at least 10 sacks and 20 tackles for loss, and needs one sack to pass Mario Williams (25.5) for most in school history.

    2. North Carolina leads the series 66-34-6 after winning seven of the last 10 meetings, but its advantage slips to 35-29 since the teams joined the ACC in 1953.

    3. Nyheim Hines and Reggie Gallaspy II have combined for 1,262 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground for the Wolfpack.

Preview: Boise State at Fresno State
    Gracenote
    Nov 22, 2017

Boise State wouldn’t appear to have much on the line Saturday against host Fresno State, but don’t tell that to fourth-year coach Bryan Harsin. The No. 24 Broncos, having already locked up a spot in the Mountain West Conference title game, are on the verge of going undefeated in conference play for the first time since 2009.

In a unique situation, the two rivals will meet again seven days later in the MWC championship game, which will likely take place in Boise given the Broncos’ commanding lead over the Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Broncos have won seven in a row and clinched the Mountain Division title after rolling to a 44-19 victory over Air Force last Saturday with quarterback Brett Rypien throwing for 300 yards and three touchdowns. The Broncos have averaged 46.3 points over the last four games with Rypien throwing for 12 touchdowns and one interception over that stretch. Boise State will need another strong offensive showing against Fresno State, which clinched the West Division title with last Saturday’s 13-7 victory at Wyoming and ranks first in the MWC and 12th nationally in scoring defense at 17.3 points per game.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: Boise State -7

ABOUT BOISE STATE (9-2, 7-0 MWC): Jabril Frazier and Curtis Weaver have a combined 14 sacks to lead the defense, which forced three turnovers and had four sacks in last week’s victory over Air Force. The impressive secondary features safety Kekoa Nawahine (78 tackles) and cornerback Tyler Horton, a Fresno native who had a 21-yard fumble return for a touchdown last week and leads the Broncos' defense with 10 pass breakups. Fresno State has struggled against opposing tight ends and will be tested by senior Jake Roh, who has caught 39 passes for 410 yards with nine touchdown receptions.

ABOUT FRESNO STATE (8-3, 6-1): Quarterback Marcus McMaryion has been a steady force with 12 touchdown passes and three interceptions for the Bulldogs, who were picked to finish sixth in the West Division after going 1-11 last season. “I can’t be prouder of this team and I can’t be happier for them,” first-year coach Jeff Tedford told reporters. “The turnaround that they’ve made, the belief and confidence, the hard work they’ve put in, the coaching staff has done a phenomenal job.” Linebacker George Helmuth was named MWC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 11 tackles and recovering a critical fumble against Wyoming.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Boise State has won 13 of the last 15 meetings against Fresno State and holds a 13-5 lead in the series.

    2. Fresno State has allowed only 20 pass plays of 20 or more yards this season, the fewest in the conference.

    3. Boise State has won 12 straight games against MWC opponents from the West Division.

    Nov 22, 2017

The SEC West title is at stake on Saturday when top-ranked Alabama visits sixth-ranked Auburn in the Iron Bowl and the contest also carries College Football Playoff implications. The Tigers fall out of CFP consideration with a loss while the Crimson Tide would all but clinch a spot in the four-team playoff with their 12th consecutive victory.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said there is no need to explain the importance of Saturday's matchup to his players, especially with so much on the line in the latest installment. "The Iron Bowl is a tremendous rivalry game and there's a lot of passion on both sides," Saban said at a press conference. "Lots of people are interested in it and it's got lots of ramifications this year. As a competitor, this is always a game you look forward to having the opportunity to play in." Auburn has averaged 44 points while recording four consecutive victories after it looked like it was falling out of contention and coach Gus Malzahn is glad his team has this opportunity. "This is a huge game for us. I'm excited for our team, and they've worked extremely hard to get to this point," Malzahn told reporters. "We're playing the No. 1 team in the country two times (the Tigers routed Georgia on Nov. 11) in the last three weeks. It's for the SEC West championship, so, real excited to play this week."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Alabama -4.5.

ABOUT ALABAMA (11-0, 7-0 SEC): Strong safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring) will return after a one-game absence and the junior is the star of a defense which leads the nation in scoring defense (10.2 points per game) and total defense (244.1 yards per game), and ranks second in rushing defense (87.4) and third in passing defense (156.7). Sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts has thrown 14 touchdown passes against one interception and has accounted for 22 total touchdowns while leading an offense that ranks seventh nationally at 41.4 points per game. Junior wideout Calvin Ridley has 52 receptions for 858 yards and he ranks third in school history with 2,672 receiving yards.

ABOUT AUBURN (9-2, 5-2): Junior running back Kerryon Johnson has been superb with 1,172 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns but the Tigers will need a strong performance from sophomore quarterback Jarrett Stidham (2,445 yards, 16 touchdowns, four interceptions) against Alabama's stingy defense. "I think it's going to be a big key for us, if we want to move the ball on these guys," Stidham said of having a balanced attack. "Obviously, they're a very, very talented defense. I think if we come and execute, establish a really good tempo, I think it will put us in a good position for the rest of the game." Auburn is tied for eighth nationally in scoring defense (16.6) and ranks 10th in total defense (302.3) while receiving solid campaigns from junior pass rusher Jeff Holland (team-best nine sacks) and junior middle linebacker Deshaun Davis (team-leading 58 tackles).

    EXTRA POINTS
    1. Alabama has won seven of the past nine meetings and holds a 45-35-1 series edge.
    2. Johnson has seven 100-yard outings this season and 10 in his career.
    3. The Crimson Tide have been ravaged at linebacker due to injuries, making freshman Dylan Moses a key figure after he had 11 tackles and one interception against Mercer last Saturday in his first career start.

When: 3:45 PM ET, Saturday, November 25, 2017
Where: Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman, Oklahoma

    Preview: West Virginia at Oklahoma
    Gracenote
    Nov 22, 2017

Heisman Trophy frontrunner Baker Mayfield plays his final game at Memorial Stadium on Saturday when Oklahoma hosts West Virginia. But the only player in FBS history to throw for at least 13,500 yards and also rush for at least 1,000 yards won't be in the starting lineup as part of the discipline for "Crotchgate."

Sooners coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday that Mayfield would be stripped of his captaincy for the game and would not start after Mayfield grabbed his crotch at least twice and screamed obscenities at the Kansas sidelines in the third quarter of last week's 41-3 Oklahoma win in Lawrence. "It's not what we want in this program," Riley said. "And it's not going to be acceptable here. This program has very high standards. This university has very high standards. And when they're not met, there has to be consequences. But at the same time, he's a young person. When I was his age, I made a lot of mistakes, too. I bet everybody in this room did. That's part of it." Kyler Murray, a highly-touted transfer to Texas A&M, will start for the Sooners while West Virginia also starts its backup quarterback, Chris Chugunov, in place of the injured Will Grier.

TV: 3:45 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Oklahoma -22.5

ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (7-4, 5-3 Big 12): The Mountaineers come into the contest in a four-way tie for third place in the Big 12 with Texas, Iowa State and Oklahoma State but will be without Grier, who had surgery to repair a broken middle finger on his right (throwing) hand suffered while diving for the pylon in the first quarter of a 28-14 home loss to Texas last Saturday. Chugunov, who'd thrown 16 passes as a college player before Saturday, completed 14-of-26 attempts for 189 yards and a touchdown in relief of Grier, who finishes the regular season having completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 3,490 yards and 34 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. Chugunov has a talented trio of receivers to throw to in David Sills V, who leads the nation with 18 touchdown receptions, junior Gary Jennings (92 catches, 1,016 yards) and senior Ka'Raun White (57 catches, 970 yards, 11 TDs) while the Mountaineers' defense, which ranks just 102nd in total defense (434.9 yards allowed per game), is led by senior linebacker Al-Rasheed Benton (94 tackles) and safeties Kyzir White and Kenny Robinson, who each have three interceptions.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (10-1, 7-1): Look for Mayfield to get a rousing ovation from the Sooner faithful when he makes his first appearance, and for good reason as he leads the nation in completion percentage (70.8), passing efficiency rating (199.3), passing yards per attempt (11.6), passing yard per completion (16.4) and pass plays of 20-plus yards (68). The running game, which benefits from a big, physical offensive line, is also a good one featuring Rodney Anderson (749 yards, 7 TDs) and Trey Sermon (597 yards, 5 TDs) while wide receivers Marquise Brown (44 catches, 830 yards, 5 TDs) and CeeDee Lamb (36-649-6) and tight end Mark Andrews (47-787-5) lead a deep receiving corps. Senior defensive end/linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo leads the defense with a Big 12-best 8.0 sacks to go along with 17.0 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Oklahoma has won 23 of its last 24 Big 12 games dating back to the 2015 season with the only loss on Oct. 7 to Iowa State, 38-31.

    2. The Sooners lead the nation in yards per play (8.3) well ahead of second place UCF (7.6).

    3. Mayfield has thrown at least one touchdown pass in a Big 12-record 37 consecutive games.
