4* New Orleans +2 1/2:
With road games at Tampa and New Orleans up next followed by a season-finale at home versus Carolina, tonight in reality is a MUST-WIN for the 7-5 Falcons. But after getting swept last year in this series nothing would please the Saints more than to hammer the nail in the coffin against their #1 rival. New Orleans has won nine out of 10 with the lone defeat at the Rams when the Saints played without both starting cornerbacks including rookie sensation Marshon Lattimore. But both starting corners are now healthy and the Saints last week dominated Carolina with a 400-279 edge in total yards. For years you had to wonder how dangerous the Saints could be if they ever found balance in the form of a dependable running game and adequate defense to compliment the mind-blowing talents of Drew Brees. Ingram and Kamara have combined for 16 rushing touchdowns and the Saints are #12 in the league in total defense with 33 sacks and 11 interceptions while permitting just 20.3 points per game. Obviously the difference has been the best 1-2 rushing punch in the NFL and give credit to Coach Sean Payton, who was flexible enough to change his approach offensively to provide Brees with more help and keep the defense off the field. After being almost unbeatable at the Georgia Dome, the Falcons are only 3-3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with defeats to Buffalo, Miami, and Minnesota. Last week was the first time in 30-games Matt Ryan did not have a touchdown pass. The Falcons do return corner Desmond Trufant but their main problem this year has been on offense where coordinator Steve Sarkisian has really struggled with consistency for Matt Ryan and all the Atlanta arsenal of weapons. Two years ago the Saints were #24 in rushing. This year they are #3 and lead the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 19 (nine more than the Falcons). Meanwhile Brees is at 71.5 percent accuracy and closing in on the all-time record held by Sam Bradford and is #3 in passing yards behind Brady and Stafford. But what's key is he's attempted less passes than seven other quarterbacks. Usually Brees leads the league in attempts. I like the Saints' balance offensively and there's just no excuse for Atlanta losing consecutive games to Buffalo and Miami at home. That alone should have eliminated them from playoff consideration. Grab the points tonight with the Saints. New Orleans is 6-0 ATS off a divisional game the past two seasons; 9-1 ATS on the road after scoring 30 or more points the last two years; 18-9 ATS in their last 27; and 41-18 ATS versus an opponent with a winning record while going 12-2 ATS within the AFC South. Atlanta just 1-4 ATS following the3ir last five straight-up defeats and 4-11 ATS after allowing 15-points or less in their previous game.
