    # 10 PLAGIO 3/1

    # 9 UNIONADO 2/1

    # 7 KING DANIEL 5/2

My selection in this race is PLAGIO. Is a key contender - given the 51 Equibase Speed Fig from his most recent race. A solid 64 avg class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge against this group of animals. With a formidable 57 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. UNIONADO - He has been travelling solidly recently while recording very strong Equibase speed figs. Will make a strong showing versus this field. KING DANIEL - Has raced admirably in dirt sprint races.

    # 5 PURA LICA 6/1

    # 12 GO BONNIE GO 12/1

    # 10 KARA'S ANGEL 15/1

I give my vote to PURA LICA here. The odds may be just right on this one. Is tough not to examine given the company run in as of late. Prescott has a win percentage of 15 over the last 30 days. GO BONNIE GO - When a trainer brings any pony back this soon it is a positive signal. Looks like a reliable player for the exotics. KARA'S ANGEL - This filly is coming back in next to no time to race. She has earned competitive figs under today's conditions and should fare well versus this field.

    Parx Racing - Race #5 - Post: 2:13pm - Maiden Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $24,000 Class Rating: 67

    Rating: 4

    #5 FINAL BLESSING (ML=8/1)
    #8 DISTINCTIVE RIDE (ML=3/2)

FINAL BLESSING - I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a return. Ranked numero uno in earnings per start. Another notice that this animal has the class to take this race. DISTINCTIVE RIDE - The jockey and trainer combination have a beneficial ROI when they team up. I like the hard fact that this colt's last speed rating, 61, is tops in this group.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SHOTMASTER (ML=4/1), #4 CHASING MY HALO (ML=6/1),

SHOTMASTER - I'd like to see better recent efforts with M/L odds of 4/1. Can't play this steed in today's sprint of 7 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance event recently. Quite unimpressive speed figure last out at Parx Racing at 7 furlongs. Don't believe this racer will improve too much today. This closer should have a rough go of it to be along with the lack of pace in this race. CHASING MY HALO - In any event of 7 furlongs, I like to bet on a contender that has been on the board in sprint races recently.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4 - Post: 1:55pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $13,700 Class Rating: 75

    Rating: 4

    #3 IM CHILLIN (ML=5/1)
    #10 HELMET HEAD (IRE) (ML=3/2)

IM CHILLIN - Trainer Potts gave this gelding a good stiff work. Last one was 2nd fastest of the day. Earnings per race is something that I believe can be a very key selection factor. This thoroughbred is ranked the highest in this bunch. HELMET HEAD (IRE) - Looking at today's class figure, this horse is meeting an easier group than last race out at Monmouth Park. A definite class advantage goes to this horse. A pretty good sign he will be very competitive in this grass race. Don't throw this horse out due to his last race at Monmouth Park where he ended up seventh on the soft turf. Should improve this time around.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SOPHISTICATION (ML=9/2), #2 SON OF SO (ML=6/1), #11 MOJO RISING (ML=6/1),

SOPHISTICATION - The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this racer as a questionable challenger. MOJO RISING - You always figure that this horse has a shot to be victorious, but he falters most every time.

    Preview: Bruins at Senators
    Gracenote
    Dec 30, 2017

The Boston Bruins attempt to extend their point streak to eight games on Saturday as they visit the Atlantic Division-rival Ottawa Senators. Boston owns a 5-0-2 record over its last seven contests after falling 4-3 in a shootout at Washington on Thursday.

David Backes continued his surge in the setback for the Bruins, scoring a pair of goals for his third consecutive two-point performance. The 33-year-old right wing has collected three tallies and three assists during the run. Ottawa is coming off a 5-4 home triumph over Columbus on Friday in which it overcame a 3-1 deficit by scoring four consecutive goals. Mark Stone netted a tally and set up another as the Senators halted a four-game slide that included a 5-1 setback at Boston on Wednesday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), Sportsnet (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE BRUINS (20-10-6): Tuukka Rask has been a beast in the crease of late, going 9-0-1 with a 1.41 goals-against average and .946 save percentage in his last 10 starts. "I'm seeing the puck well, making saves," Rask told the team's website after Friday's practice. "As a team, we've played very good hockey, and as I've said before, that's very helpful for goalies. When they clear out the bodies in front of you and if there's any rebounds, they clear out the rebound as well. That's a big part of it." Coach Bruce Cassidy stated David Krejci (upper body) and defenseman Adam McQuaid (broken fibula) could return to the lineup Saturday after missing six games and 10 weeks, respectively.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (12-16-8): Mike Hoffman has been kept off the scoresheet in each of his last four contests and enters Saturday with a 12-game goal-scoring drought. The 28-year-old needs two points to reach 200 in the NHL. Stone's goal against the Blue Jackets was his first in 13 games but gave him nine points over his last eight contests.

    OVERTIME

    1. Senators D Fredrik Claesson will finish serving the two-game suspension he received for delivering a dangerous check against the Bruins on Wednesday.

    2. Boston LW Brad Marchand's next assist will be the 200th of his career.

    3. Ottawa F Alex Burrows has gone 15 games without an assist, keeping him one shy of 200 in the NHL.

    Preview: Canadiens at Panthers
    Gracenote
    Dec 29, 2017

The Florida Panthers are on their longest winning streak of the season and can wrap up a perfect homestand when they host the sputtering Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night in their final game of 2017. The Panthers have won four in a row to leapfrog Montreal into fourth place in the Atlantic Division.

Florida has surrendered only six goals during its winning streak and Thursday's 3-2 win over Philadelphia was its third one-goal decision in that span. "We're playing way better defensively and we have better starts," forward Jonathan Huberdeau told reporters. "It's been good to come back lately and get some wins." Montreal has dropped three in a row to fall to 2-4-0 entering the final stop of its seven-game road trip. The Canadiens have managed only one goal in each of their last three defeats, but they have thrived offensively against the Panthers - winning the last four in the series by a combined 18-6 - including a 5-1 rout on Oct. 24.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBC, TVA, CITY (Montreal), FSN Florida

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (16-18-4): Coach Claude Julien decided to split up his top-line pairing of Jonathan Drouin and captain Max Pacioretty on Thursday. Drouin, who set up two goals in the October meeting, has only one assist in his last eight games while Pacioretty is mired in an 11-game goal drought. "It’s not like we’re missing our chances - we’re not really getting chances, so that’s what’s getting a little frustrating,” Drouin told reporters after a 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Thursday.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (16-16-5): Jonathan Huberdeau offered a simple explanation for his goal-scoring tear - “I got my family here for a bit. Good food.” - after registering his fourth tally in three games to bump his season total to 13. James Reimer was lit up by Montreal for five goals two months ago, but has found a groove while making 10 consecutive starts in place of injured Roberto Luongo. Reimer owns a stellar .947 save percentage in his last six games.

    OVERTIME

    1. Reimer is 5-5-2 with two shutouts and a 2.97 goals-against average versus the Canadiens.

    2. Montreal has allowed at least one power-play goal in five straight games.

    3. Panthers F Nick Bjugstad has a goal and four assists his last five contests.

    Preview: Devils at Capitals
    Gracenote
    Dec 30, 2017

The Washington Capitals attempt to finish with a perfect record at home this month when they host the Metropolitan Division-rival New Jersey Devils on Saturday. The Capitals have won each of their first seven contests at Capital One Arena in December, including Thursday's 4-3 shootout triumph over Boston.

Captain Alex Ovechkin ended a four-game drought by scoring his league high-tying 24th goal in regulation and netted the lone tally in the bonus format as Washington overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits after being shut out in each of its previous two contests. New Jersey nearly finished with a perfect mark on its six-game homestand but squandered a 3-1 lead on Friday and dropped a 4-3 overtime decision against Buffalo. Despite the disappointing ending, the Devils continued to earn points as they have gone 6-0-2 over their last eight overall games. Miles Wood scored his 10th goal, giving New Jersey five players with double-digit totals this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE DEVILS (22-9-6): Marcus Johansson, who spent his first seven seasons in the NHL with Washington, scored on Friday to pull within two points of 300 for his career. Taylor Hall leads New Jersey with 36 points but was kept off the scoresheet by Buffalo after recording a goal and four assists over his previous three games. Travis Zajac, who has registered only two points - both goals - in 20 contests this season, is slated to appear in his 800th career game on Saturday.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (23-13-3): Evgeny Kuznetsov appeared in his 300th NHL contest on Thursday and celebrated by notching an assist. The 25-year-old Russian leads Washington with 39 points - one more than Ovechkin. Nicklas Backstrom has scored only seven goals this season and needs five more to reach 200 for his career.

    OVERTIME

    1. Capitals C Lars Eller recorded a goal and an assist against Boston, leaving him two points shy of 200 for his career.

    2. New Jersey has gone 25-for-27 on the penalty kill over its last nine games.

    3. The next victory for Washington's Barry Trotz will move him past Lindy Ruff (736) for fifth place on the all-time coaching list.

    Preview: Hurricanes at Blues
    Gracenote
    Dec 30, 2017

The Carolina Hurricanes have been surging of late, and they look to extend their winning streak to five games when they visit the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. Carolina has captured seven of its last eight contests, including Friday's 2-1 home triumph over Pittsburgh.

The Hurricanes fell behind before Derek Ryan and Sebastian Aho scored second-period goals to lead the team to its sixth straight win at PNC Arena. While Carolina has been on the rise, St. Louis has been trending in the opposite direction - losing seven of its last nine contests. The Blues scored twice in a 65-second span early in the third period Friday to take the lead but went on to drop a 4-2 decision in Dallas. Vladimir Tarasenko netted his 16th tally in the loss, ending his five-game drought and pulling within one of Brayden Schenn for the team lead.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Carolinas, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (18-12-7): Aho is wielding a hot stick these days as he has scored four goals during a three-game streak. The 20-year-old Finn is one tally behind Jeff Skinner (12) for the team lead and one point back of Teuvo Teravainen (29) for first on the club. Scott Darling likely will be in the crease Saturday for what will be his 100th game in the NHL.

ABOUT THE BLUES (23-15-2): Schenn leads St. Louis in both goals (17) and points (40) but has been kept off the scoresheet in each of his last three contests. The team could be without Jake Allen on Saturday as he collided with a teammate and was pulled from the game against Dallas under NHL concussion protocol. The 27-year-old Allen returned after a 10-minute absence, prompting coach Mike Yeo to tell reporters, "That was a bad decision by me. I think I put Jake and the team in a bad position there."

    OVERTIME

    1. Hurricanes recalled F Lucas Wallmark from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Friday, but the 22-year-old Swede was a healthy scratch.

    2. St. Louis D Colton Parayko skated in his 200th career game on Friday.

    3. Carolina backup G Cam Ward has won six straight decisions to pull into a tie with Billy Smith (305) for 27th place on the all-time wins list.

    Preview: Wild at Predators
    Gracenote
    Dec 30, 2017

The Minnesota Wild have been sharp in two games since the holiday break and vie for a third straight victory over a Central Division opponent when they visit the Nashville Predators on Saturday. The Wild knocked off visiting Dallas 4-2 on Wednesday before outlasting Nashville at home by the same score on Friday in the opener of the back-to-back set.

Mikael Granlund recorded his second career hat trick on Friday as Minnesota welcomed the return of Devan Dubnyk, who made 41 saves in a dazzling effort after missing the previous six contests with a lower-body injury. While the Wild are beginning to turn things around, the Predators have hit a speed bump with just one victory in their last five games (1-3-1) after earning at least one point in seven straight contests to start the month (6-0-1). Nashville dropped out of first place in the Central after Winnipeg’s victory over the New York Islanders on Friday and could be without leading scorer Filip Forsberg (34 points) against the Wild after the forward left the last game with an undisclosed ailment. Defenseman P.K. Subban has raised his production level with nine points in his last eight games after notching a goal and an assist in Friday’s setback.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE WILD (20-15-3): Granlund has led the way over the last two games with four goals and an assist to push his season total to 27 points, which ties him for second on the team with Jason Zucker. “He was making plays,” coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters of Granlund. “(The puck) was like a yo-yo on his stick tonight. When he gets like that, he’s as good as there is.” Eric Staal notched an assist in Friday’s victory and tops the Wild with 33 points while defenseman Ryan Suter also set up a goal and has registered six points in his last six games.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (22-10-5): Kyle Turris scored one of the club's two goals in Friday’s loss, giving him 18 points in 22 games since being acquired from Ottawa in a three-team trade. Forsberg tops the team with 15 goals but has not recorded one in the last seven games and Subban moved into second place on the Predators with 27 points - one more than forward Kevin Fiala. Pekka Rinne made 34 saves in Friday’s loss, dropping to 19-7-3 this season, and could sit out on the second night of the back-to-back set in favor of Juuse Saros (3-3-2, .918 save percentage).

    OVERTIME

    1. Nashville RW Viktor Arvidsson has gone seven games without a goal after recording eight in his previous 19 contests.

    2. Minnesota LW Zach Parise played with Iowa of the American Hockey League on a conditioning stint Thursday, recording an assist, and could make his 2017-18 debut soon.

    3. The Wild has won five of the last seven meetings, including both matchups this season while totaling 10 goals.

    Preview: Kings at Canucks
    Gracenote
    Dec 29, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings will attempt to rebound after dropping a showdown for supremacy in the Pacific Division when they open a three-game Western Canada swing at the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Los Angeles has stumbled of late with losses in five of its last seven games (2-3-2), including four of five on the road.

The Kings had a chance to move back into first place in the division but came up on the short end of a 3-2 overtime decision to expansion Vegas on Thursday night. "We were lucky to get one point," said defenseman Drew Doughty after Los Angeles was outshot 39-28 on its home ice. "In some ways, I don't even think we deserved a point." Vancouver halted a four-game slide and won for only the second time in 10 games (2-7-1) as its newly configured top line amassed 12 points in a 5-2 trouncing of Chicago on Thursday. The Canucks rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 victory at Los Angeles on Nov. 14, their third victory in the past four meetings.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), CBC, Sportsnet (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE KINGS (22-11-5): Doughty was held off the scoresheet in last month's loss to Vancouver, but he has three goals and 14 assists in 20 games since, including one of each in Thursday's setback to Vegas. Doughty needs one goal to tie Steve Duchesne (99) for second on the franchise list for defensemen. Jonathan Quick is 16-15-2 lifetime against the Canucks, a deceptive mark given his 1.66 goals-against average and .938 save percentage against them.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-17-5): Veteran Thomas Vanek, in his third game paired with Sam Gagner and rookie sensation Brock Boeser, had a hand in all five goals Thursday - scoring twice and collecting three assists - to give him 12 goals and 28 points on the season. Boeser scored for the fourth consecutive game and notched his eighth goal in 10 contests for a team-high 21 tallies. "It's been a blast," Boeser told reporters. "Just based off of last game, I thought our chemistry was building."

    OVERTIME

    1. The Kings have the league's top-ranked penalty kill with a success rate of 87 percent.

    2. Since collecting an assist at Los Angeles on Nov. 14, Boeser has 16 goals in 20 games.

    3. Los Angeles has struggled in division play, posting a 3-4-3 mark against Pacific foes.
