Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #5 - Post: 2:36pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,100 Class Rating: 86

    Rating: 4

    #6 GOODZAPPER (ML=9/2)
    #3 AMERICAN SPARROW (ML=5/1)

GOODZAPPER - Have to like the way Bernardini has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today. AMERICAN SPARROW - Have to give this gelding a fair chance. Ran a nice outing last out within the last 30 days. Rodriguez was aboard this gelding last out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should compete well today.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #9 INCREDIBLE DEE (ML=7/2), #1 ATHLETIC TEMPER (ML=4/1), #10 E Z MOON (ML=8/1),

INCREDIBLE DEE - Hasn't raced or had any works since December 8th. Not much value on this favorite. Tough to back any less than sharp equine in a short distance affair if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last couple months. ATHLETIC TEMPER - Last ran on December 12th at Mahoning Valley Race Cour, finishing fourth. Unlikely to move up off of that try in today's event. E Z MOON - Common fig in the last race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 6 furlongs. Don't believe this racer will improve too much in today's race. The bang up job last out may knock this gelding off stride this time out.

    STRAIGHT WAGERS:

    Parx Racing - Race #9 - Post: 4:01pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 88

    Rating: 3

    #3 SCARLY CHARLY (ML=4/1)
    #4 PRODIGIOUS (ML=6/1)

SCARLY CHARLY - Ran last out against a higher rated class of horses at Parx Racing. The move down in class should suit him well. This gelding is at the top in EPS (earnings per start). Check out this one in the saddling enclosure. Handicapping information show this pony with three improving speed figures. Sanchez should be on a horse ready to go today. PRODIGIOUS - The rider and trainer combination have a beneficial ROI when they combine forces. This gelding is in good form. Ended up third on December 9th. Gelding is a few starts into a return here. Should give a big race today.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #10 DOMINIC'S SMILE (ML=5/2), #9 GITIDONE (ML=8/1),

DOMINIC'S SMILE - In the last event this less than sharp equine finished eighth. Doesn't bode well for his chances this time out. GITIDONE - All sorts of crazy early zip on board for this race. No chance for this speedball. This mount ran a disappointing rating last out. He shouldn't run better and will probably get beat in today's race running that figure.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - SCARLY CHARLY - Having the best speed fig last race of 89 at Parx Racing on Nov 28th. This gelding has an excellent chance to win here.

    STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Put your money on #3 SCARLY CHARLY on the nose if you can get odds of 9/5 or more

    # 7 EKATI WILDCAT 5/2

    # 9 OFFICER GRIGGS 6/1

    # 8 WINE N DIVINE 5/1

EKATI WILDCAT looks to be the bet in here. Should best this group here, showing very strong numbers of late. Recorded a very good Equibase Speed Fig last time out. With a nice class rating average of 89, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this group of horses. OFFICER GRIGGS - Has strong front-end speed and will probably fare solidly versus this group. Ran a strong last race. WINE N DIVINE - When this jockey and trainer team up, bettors often make money. Green has one of the top winning percentages in this group of horses with entries running at this distance and surface.

Axmaker has a reliable 19 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. TAVERN LAW - Overall, this trainer has been money-making at this distance/surface. Has been racing admirably in races of this distance, going 3 for 13 under similar conditions.

Heat vs. Raptors Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

DeMar DeRozan has been lava-hot during Toronto's five-game winning streak and he looks to continue his torrid play when the Raptors visit the Miami Heat on Tuesday. DeRozan is averaging 33.4 points during the stretch, including a career-best 52-point outing against the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 1.

DeRozan was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday for the third time this season and he followed up the honor by scoring 35 points, including the go-ahead three-point play, as Toronto posted a 114-113 overtime victory over the Brooklyn Nets. DeRozan's scoring exploits have helped the Raptors average 121.8 points during their winning streak, including outputs of 131, 129 and 124. Miami arrives with a four-game winning streak as it begins a stretch in which seven of eight games are on the road. Point guard Goran Dragic is averaging 21 points and 8.3 assists during the four-game winning streak and has team-leading season averages of 16.7 points and 4.8 assists.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Miami), TSN (Toronto)

ABOUT THE HEAT (22-17): Forward Josh Richardson is developing nicely in his third NBA season by averaging 12.8 points - including 17.2 over the last 20 games - while displaying signs he is just scratching his potential. The 24-year-old has scored in double digits in a career-best 14 consecutive games and coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters that he is "ready for the next jump" while Richardson tries to maintain his perspective. "It's an NBA season," Richardson told reporters. "It never goes like you want it to go. I try not to get down on myself after the preseason, I try not to get too high, start feeling myself during the preseason, I just try to stay kind of even and I think that's been great for me."

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (28-10): Point guard Kyle Lowry suffered an acute back spasm after suffering a scary fall during the overtime and his status will be updated after he is re-evaluated Tuesday after he was reportedly seen leaving the arena Monday in a wheelchair. Lowry, who had 18 points and 11 assists, was competing for a rebound when he fell and landed hard on his lower back and buttocks and then was dealing with excruciating pain while on the floor before being taken for X-rays. "We rely on Kyle for everything he does for us, to be the general out there on the court," DeRozan said after the win. "And it's tough when he's not out there but we got to figure it out."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Heat have dropped a franchise-worst five straight games in Toronto.

    2. Toronto swingman CJ Miles is 6-of-22 shooting over the last three games.

    3. Miami C Kelly Olynyk has three double-doubles over the past six games after having one prior to the stretch.

    PREDICTION: Raptors 115, Heat 110

Trail Blazers vs. Thunder Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

Dealing with Russell Westbrook is hard enough and can only get worse if your top player is out of the lineup. The Portland Trail Blazers hope to have star point guard Damian Lillard back on the floor when then they visit Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday.

Lillard sat out Sunday's 111-110 victory over the San Antonio Spurs due to right calf and hamstring injuries and he has missed six of the past eight games. "We've got a big stretch of games coming up and having a little bit of a situation with my hamstring, it takes time, and then, aggravating my calf, and having both be on the same side, (the team training staff) just told me that it would probably be smarter to take it easy," Lillard told reporters about sitting out before a four-game road trip begins in Oklahoma City. The Trail Blazers have won six of their past eight meetings with the Thunder, who were drilled 114-100 by the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. Westbrook had 26 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in the defeat for his 14th triple-double of the season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBATV, NCSN Northwest, FS Oklahoma

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (21-18): Shooting guard CJ McCollum once again took over the starring role with Lillard out and he scored the game-winning basket with a floater in the lane with 5.9 seconds left -- a shot that bounced on the rim seven times before dropping in. "It didn't want to go in. I think that's karma for all the in-and-outs I've missed all year so I was due for one," McCollum said after his 25-point outing. "I got a good look, so I can live with that even if it rolls out. That's the shot I practice over and over again." Portland has won five of its last seven games despite Lillard sitting out four of the victories but backup Shabazz Napier has stepped up to average 14.3 points over the past 10 games and he contributed 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting against the Spurs.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (22-18): Oklahoma City has lost three of its past five games and looked a step slow most of Sunday night while falling to the youthful Suns. "We just didn't play up to the level that we needed to," forward Paul George told reporters afterward. "It's a young team that played hard. They beat us in physicality. They were just aggressive, a young team playing aggressive on their floor. They got hot and it resulted in a loss for us." George struggled to 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting to halt a personal stretch in which he scored 24 or more in each of his past six games.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Lillard recorded 36 points and 13 assists as the Trail Blazers posted a 103-99 home win over the Thunder on Nov. 5.

    2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams scored 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting against Phoenix for his fourth straight game in double digits.

    3. Portland C Jusuf Nurkic had 17 points and 13 rebounds against the Spurs for his ninth double-double of the season.

PREDICTION: Thunder 118, Trail Blazers 114

Magic vs. Mavericks Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats

The Dallas Mavericks aim to defeat Orlando for the 10th time in the past 12 meetings when they host the Magic on Tuesday. Both teams enter with losing streaks as Dallas has lost its past three games while Orlando has dropped four in a row and 13 of its last 14.

The Magic have lost by double digits in seven of their past 14 games and only a 40-point, fourth-quarter uprising kept them from another one on Saturday when they fell 131-127 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Orlando trailed by 20 entering the final period and players pointed to how the team kept fighting as a positive in terms of moving forward. Dallas won a season-best four straight games before the current slide that reached three with Sunday's 100-96 home loss to the New York Knicks. "It's really the same old story. It's an early hole, it's a late rally, and then coming up short," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters afterward. "The bottom line is we've got to be better early in games."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Orlando), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (12-28): Forward Aaron Gordon scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half against Cleveland to reach at least 30 for the second time in four games and raise his average to 19.2. Coach Frank Vogel has seen a steady rise in consistency from the 22-year-old, who carried the Magic on his back in the fourth quarter against the Cavaliers. "I liked the fight that we played with, but we've got to play with that the whole game for us to compete and make a push," Gordon told reporters afterward. "My teammates put their trust in me, but we're all just trying to make the right play."

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (13-28): Dallas has lost by a total of 10 points over the past three games on the heels of the four-game winning streak. The defensive effort was a huge issue in two of the losses - allowing 127 points to Chicago and 125 to Golden State - and rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. fingered a reason that will certainly upset Carlisle. "We might have gotten a little too relaxed with our winning streak," Smith told reporters. "We're not coming out with enough intensity on both ends of the court."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Magic have dropped their past five visits to Dallas.

    2. Dallas SF Harrison Barnes scored 25 points in the loss to the Knicks and is averaging 22.5 over the past four games.

    3. Orlando PG Elfrid Payton scored 20 points against Cleveland for his third-highest output of the season.

    PREDICTION: Mavericks 115, Magic 107

Kings vs. Lakers Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Los Angeles Lakers halted a nine-game losing streak and are hoping to move past comments made by LaVar Ball as they enter Tuesday's home game against the Sacramento Kings. The father of rookie point guard Lonzo Ball caused another distraction by claiming Lakers coach Luke Walton has lost control of the team.

The elder Ball made his comments Sunday, hours before the Lakers played inspired basketball by trouncing the Atlanta Hawks 132-113 for only their second victory in the past 14 games. "We need to focus our energy and minds on what we are doing and that is the message we send every day," Walton told reporters afterward. "Don't worry about what people on Twitter are saying, don't worry about what this media outlet is saying or that one or your agent. The people that matter to what we are trying to do are all in our room." Lonzo Ball and college nemesis De'Aaron Fox of Sacramento are squaring off for the second time this season and Ball (11 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds) had the better all-around game than Fox (13 points, three assists) despite the Kings recording a 113-102 victory Nov. 22. Sacramento let a 13-point lead get away Monday and lost 107-100 to the San Antonio Spurs for its sixth defeat in the past eight games.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), Spectrum Sports Net (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE KINGS (13-26): Fox averaged 29.5 points in two games for Kentucky last season against Ball, including a memorable 39-point outing when the Wildcats eliminated Ball's UCLA team in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. His domination of Ball helped him rise to the No. 5 selection in the NBA draft (Ball went second) and he enters the latest matchup with a 15.3 average over the past three games. Fox had 11 points and matched his season best of 10 assists in Monday's loss to the Spurs, a contest in which center Willie Cauley-Stein stood out with 22 points and nine rebounds.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (12-27): Rookie forward Kyle Kuzma gets along fine with Ball the player but he publicly dismissed the comments by the father while backing Walton on Monday. "When you lose games, at the end of the day Luke isn't the one going out and shooting 2-for-15, turning the ball over, having turnovers or missing free throws," Kuzma told reporters. "That's us. Can't blame the coaching staff for everything." Kuzma, who averages a team-high 17.1 points, is trying to break out of a funk in which he has scored in single digits in three of the past seven games and experienced poor shooting performances such as 4-of-24 and 2-of-14.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Kings have won 10 of the past 12 meetings.

    2. Sacramento PG George Hill is expected to miss his third straight game with his wife on the verge of giving birth.

    3. Los Angeles SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope completed his 25-day sentence for a probation violation related to his March DUI arrest and will now be available for all games after being available for home games plus road games in California while in a work release program during his jail stint.

    PREDICTION: Kings 119, Lakers 117

Jets vs. Sabres Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The surprising Winnipeg Jets are perched atop the Central Division but staying there could be a challenge given their upcoming schedule. Owners of one the top home records in the NHL, the Jets begin a stretch of four straight and six of seven on the road that will take them to the All-Star break when they visit the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

Winnipeg has won five of six overall and extended its winning streak to five straight at home with a 4-1 victory over San Jose on Sunday to move two points ahead of St. Louis for first place in the Central. "November, December were tough schedules. We made the most of our home games which was really, really critical," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "Some of those road trips can be a little taxing for your club, so you got to be good at home." Eastern Conference-worst Buffalo was forced to play the last seven away from home while the World Junior Championships were being contested at KeyBank Arena. The Sabres went 1-4-2 during that span and have dropped four in a row, including a 4-3 setback at Winnipeg on Jan. 5 that halted Buffalo's string of four straight wins in the series.

    TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), MSG-Buffalo

ABOUT THE JETS (25-11-7): Winnipeg is putting plenty of emphasis on the next three road games, which will take the team into its bye week. "You look at where we're positioned, and we like that. But there are teams right on our heels," said captain Blake Wheeler. "You have a bad week or two, and you're on the playoff bubble probably. There's no time for feeling gratified in January. We have to keep pushing forward." Wheeler has scored five times during a six-game point streak.

ABOUT THE SABRES (10-23-9): Starting goaltender Robin Lehner took a hard shot off the neck in Sunday's game and remained in the game after receiving treatment. He missed Monday's practice, prompting the recall of netminder Linus Ullmark and top defenseman prospect Brendan Guhle from the minors. With Lehner listed as day-to-day and backup goalie Chad Johnson falling to 1-7-3 on the season after the loss in Winnipeg, Ullmark could get the start Tuesday.

    OVERTIME

    1. Jets G Connor Hellebuyck is riding a nine-game point streak (7-0-2).

    2. Sabres F Jason Pominville has three assists in the past 13 games -- two coming against the Jets.

    3. Winnipeg has scored at least one power-play goal in five straight games, going 7-for-19 in that span.

    PREDICTION: Jets 3, Sabres 2

Canucks vs. Capitals Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Washington Capitals have ascended to the top of the Metropolitan Division due in large part to their resounding success at home. Winners of nine in a row and 15 of their last 17 at Capital One Arena, the Capitals vie for their fifth straight overall victory on Tuesday versus the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

Nicklas Backstrom capped his third straight multi-point performance in style on Sunday, scoring 4:17 into overtime in a 4-3 win over St. Louis to open a three-game homestand. The 30-year-old Swedish Olympian has two goals and five assists during his three-game point streak heading into a date versus Vancouver, against which he sat out a 6-2 setback on Oct. 26 due to illness. The Canucks' play of late has been rather sickly with four straight losses and a 2-10-2 mark in their last 14 contests, with losses in Toronto and Montreal over the weekend to begin their seven-game road trip. Sven Baertschi, who returned from an 11-game absence due to a broken jaw in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Canadiens, scored two goals and added an assist in the first encounter versus Washington.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-20-6): Daniel Sedin isn't pleased with the results, but the veteran Swede maintains that if the team continues to string together strong efforts that positive news will follow suit. "The guys are battling, for sure. That's really good to see, but I feel like we need to get that first win out of the way, and then we'll be a lot better," Sedin said. Jacob Markstrom certainly hopes so as he found himself on the wrong end of a 3-2 shootout loss at Toronto on Saturday and owns an 0-5-0 career mark with a 3.51 goals-against average and .889 save percentage versus the Capitals.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (26-13-3): Braden Holtby came up large in overtime on Sunday to finish with 31 saves and run his unbeaten streak to four games and improve to 24-8-0 on the season. Fifteen of those wins have come at home, but the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner's worst loss of the season overall came at the hands of the Canucks after yielding five goals on 22 shots before being chased with five minutes left in the second period. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in that contest, but has just one point - an assist - in his last six games.

    OVERTIME

    1. Washington has ventured past regulation in seven of its last nine games, posting a 5-0-2 mark.

    2. The Canucks went 3-for-6 on the power play in the first meeting with the Capitals, but are 1-for-20 in their last seven overall.

    3. Washington is 4-for-12 with the man advantage in its last four games.

    PREDICTION: Capitals 5, Canucks 1

Hurricanes vs. Lightning Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Tampa Bay Lightning emerged from a taxing road trip with at least a point in four of five games (3-1-1) and have two more contests before enjoying their off week, beginning with a visit from the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. The Lightning suffered their second straight defeat 6-3 in Ottawa on Saturday, but rebounded 24 hours later to win 5-2 at Detroit in a physical affair.

"I thought (the response) was outstanding," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper told reporters after the victory. "You challenge these guys and they continue to answer the bell. This was an easy one to mail in. It's a five-game road trip, back to back, you go through customs. Pretty gutty effort by the guys." The Lightning should have No. 1 goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy (league-best 26 wins, .935 save percentage) back in net after he was rested Sunday, and have earned at least a point in seven straight encounters (6-0-1) with the Hurricanes, including a 5-1 decision in Carolina on Oct. 24 despite being outshot. The Hurricanes have cooled off after winning seven of eight by going 1-2-1 in their last four, capped by an embarrassing 7-1 loss at Boston on Saturday in which they surrendered five first-period goals. "Not the way we want to come into the midpoint of the season," Carolina coach Bill Peters told reporters, "but the reality is we didn't play very well."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Carolinas, FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (19-14-8): Left wing Sebastian Aho, who shares the team lead in points (33) and goals (13), left Saturday's game with a lower-body injury but practiced Monday and is considered day-to-day. Left wing Teuvo Teravainen has posted four points in the last three games to tie the 20-year-old Fin for the top spot on the team and Jeff Skinner matches Aho in goals. Veteran right wing Justin Williams has cooled of late with one of his 25 points in the last seven contests and has not scored a goal in his past 10 outings.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (30-9-3): Tampa Bay had a big scare when Daniel Girardi was hit on the neck by a slapshot in Sunday's game, but the veteran defenseman is considered day-to-day after all tests came back negative Monday. Nikita Kucherov tied Alex Ovechkin for the league lead with his 27th goal Sunday and tops the NHL with 59 points - 25 of them in the last 19 contests. Forward Yanni Gourde recorded a "Gordie Howe hat trick" Sunday - the second of the season for the Lightning (also Brayden Point) - with a pair of a goals, an assist and a fight.

    OVERTIME

    1. Carolina activated F Lee Stempniak (upper-body) from injured reserve Monday and sent F Lucas Wallmark to AHL Charlotte.

    2. The Lightning have killed all 15 power plays in the last five games and the Hurricanes are 17-for-18 over the past eight contests.

    3. Carolina G Cam Ward was 8-0-2 in his previous 10 decisions before being pulled Saturday after allowing two goals on two shots.

    PREDICTION: Lightning 4, Hurricanes 2

Blackhawks vs. Senators Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Christmas break has done wonders for Nick Schmaltz, who returned from the time off with eight points (four goals, four assists) in his last six games. The 21-year-old carries a three-game goal-scoring streak into Tuesday's contest as the Chicago Blackhawks aim to escape the cellar in the Central Division when they visit the Ottawa Senators.

"We've had some games where we want to be and then some nights where we're way off," Schmaltz said on the heels of Sunday's 4-1 victory over Edmonton. Captain Jonathan Toews, who has three goals and four assists during last four games, has meshed well with linemates Brandon Saad and recent recall Vinnie Hinostroza - with the latter collecting two goals and five assists during his five-game point streak. Like Schmaltz, Ottawa's Ryan Dzingel is also riding a three-game goal-scoring streak, with two tallies highlighting the team's 6-3 triumph over Tampa Bay on Saturday. The 25-year-old Illinois native's recent offensive eruption comes on the heels of a 10-game drought without a goal.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, TSN5, RDS (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (20-15-6): Chicago recalled Tomas Jurco from Rockford and assigned fellow forward John Hayden to the American Hockey League affiliate. Jurco has 13 goals and 12 assists with the IceHogs in 2017-18 but has underwhelmed in parts of five seasons with Detroit and the Blackhawks, with whom the 25-year-old Jurco had just one goal for his lone point in 13 games last season after being acquired for a third-round draft pick in February. Hayden, who has three goals and eight assists in 39 games this season, will be making his first trek to the minors after signing with Chicago following his senior season at Yale.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (14-17-9): Ottawa has answered a disastrous 3-8-3 mark with consecutive six-goal uprisings to win back-to-back contests for the first time since Dec. 13-16. "We're starting to come. It shows character and the ability to stick together as a team," said Mark Stone, who recorded one goal and two assists in each outing to increase his team-leading totals in both goals (17) and points (40). Captain Erik Karlsson, who has a club-best 27 assists, has set up seven goals in his last five outings.

    OVERTIME

    1. Blackhawks promising D Jordan Oesterle has three goals in his last five games.

    2. Ottawa G Craig Anderson has made 108 saves over his last three outings (2-0-1).

    3. Blackhawks D Cody Franson was placed on waivers Monday after recording one goal and six assists in 23 games this season while averaging under 15 minutes of ice time in four of his last five outings.

    PREDICTION: Blackhawks 3, Senators 2

Flames vs. Wild Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The Minnesota Wild have been superb at home and a disaster on the road, a trend they hope continues for at least one more game when they host the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Minnesota has won four straight at home and dropped five in a row on the road after absorbing a 7-2 beating at Colorado on Saturday.

The wins and losses aside, the Wild have been been outscored 21-5 during the five-game drought away from home while owning a 19-7 scoring edge in their last four at Xcel Energy Center. "We got to learn how to win on the road," coach Bruce Boudreau said following the latest debacle. "That's ridiculous how we can play so good at home and completely opposite on the road." The Flames will kick off a four-game road trip after completing a perfect three-game homestand while extending their string of one-goal games to seven in a row. "We've had the same mindset these last few games," forward Micheal Ferland said. "We know how big these points are right now. We've just been playing simple hockey and waiting for our chances. I think it's working for us right now."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary), FS North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (21-16-4): Reports that Calgary and Jaromir Jagr will be severing ties appear to be closer to fruition after the league's No. 2 career scorer did not accompany the team to Minnesota. Jagr, who will turn 46 next month, has collected only one goal and six assists in 22 games during an injury-plagued first season with the Flames. Goaltender Mike Smith has won three consecutive starts, but he is only 4-11-2 lifetime against Minnesota.

ABOUT THE WILD (22-17-3): Captain Mikko Koivu, having his least productive season since his rookie campaign in 2005-06, missed Monday's practice due to the flu and was labeled "questionable" by Boudreau. Eric Staal scored both goals Saturday at Colorado to give him seven in nine games and 19 on the season, bolstering his All-Star chances. "He'd be my pick," teammate Charlie Coyle said. "He's been a great player for us. He deserves it."

    OVERTIME

    1. The Wild have won both meetings this season after Calgary won the previous four matchups.

    2. Flames F Johnny Gaudreau has five assists during a three-game point streak.

    3. Wild G Alex Stalock, who earned the win in both matchups this season, will get the start Tuesday.

    PREDICTION: Wild 3, Flames 2

Panthers vs. Blues Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
    by Gracenote on 01/09/2018

The St. Louis Blues owned the best record in the Western Conference a month ago but they have hit a rough patch as they prepare to play their final game before going into their bye week. St. Louis has dropped two straight and nine of its last 14 (5-8-1) but will be seeking its fourth consecutive home win versus the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Coach Mike Yeo was pleased with the "response from the players" in Sunday's overtime loss at Washington after they were doubled up in Philadelphia the previous day. "Just getting that point after being down was big for us," said forward Paul Stastny, who won 17 of 24 faceoffs against the Capitals. The Panthers had a similar mindset after losing in a shootout at Columbus to fall to 0-2-1 entering the final stop of their road trip. "We've got to be happy with one point, but of course we want to win the games," center Aleksander Barkov said. "We're playing good hockey, but we're not getting two points. We need to find a way to get those two points."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Florida, FS Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (17-18-6): James Reimer has started 14 consecutive games since Roberto Luongo was injured on Dec. 4 and it appears he will continue to take on a heavy workload. Coach Bob Boughner said Luongo is not expected to play until February after he started to feel soreness during his rehab last week. The outlook is better on forward Radim Vrbata, who has missed the last five games, but Boughner planned to talk to him to gauge his availability for Tuesday.

ABOUT THE BLUES (26-16-3): Third-leading scorer Jaden Schwartz, out since taking a puck off the foot on Dec. 9, shed his walking boot Monday but is still expected to be sidelined for at least two more weeks. Vladimir Tarasenko is picking up the offensive slack with three goals and six points over the past six games. "He seems to have not only elevated his game but the way that Barby's (Ivan Barbashev) playing right now, I think Vlady has a lot to do with that, too," Yeo said.

    OVERTIME

    1. Blues backup G Carter Hutton has started four of the past five in place of Jake Allen, who was in net in a 5-2 loss to Florida on Oct. 12.

    2. Panthers F Jonathan Huberdeau has scored six goals in his last seven games.

    3. St. Louis activated Vince Dunn off injured reserve and sent fellow D Jake Walman to Chicago of the American Hockey League.

    PREDICTION: Blues 4, Panthers 3
