    Preview: SMU at Central Florida
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

SMU's once-promising season has slipped away, and Central Florida is attempting to avoid a similar fate. Two middle-of-the-pack teams in the American Athletic Conference face off Saturday on the Knights' home court.

UCF has won two in a row following a 2-5 stretch that included losing massive center Tacko Fall for the season due to a shoulder injury. The Knights still rank third nationally in points allowed (61.2), but that figure has been slipping in the wrong direction since the 7-6 Fall closed the book on his season. Wednesday's 72-57 win over South Florida was a step in the right direction, as UCF shut down four of the Bulls' five starters and posted an easy win over the AAC's worst team. SMU, meanwhile, has lost four in a row and is 3-8 over its last 11 games.

    TV: 11 a.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT SMU (15-11, 5-8 AAC): Jahmal McMurray did everything he could Wednesday against Memphis, knocking down nine 3-pointers en route to a career-high 33 points, but it still wasn't enough in a 70-67 defeat. McMurray, who has taken on a larger role for the injury-plagued Mustangs, has made 27 3-pointers over the last five games and has only sat out 10 minutes over that stretch. Ben Emelogu has been quiet from 3-point range over the last three games - 2-of-8 combined - but is still shooting a blistering 50.5 percent from the arc.

ABOUT UCF (16-9, 7-6): Over the last nine games, UCF is 4-0 when scoring at least 68 points and 0-5 when it fails to reach that mark. Two Knights carried the bulk of the scoring load against USF, as A.J. Davis registered 26 points and B.J. Taylor chipped in 21, while the other three starters totaled four points on 1-of-6 shooting. Davis is 4-of-4 from 3-point range over the last two games - and is averaging 23 points in those contests - after beginning the season 11-of-53 from the arc.

    TIP-INS

    1. In his last two games, SMU G Jimmy Whitt is averaging 17.5 points, six rebounds, four assists and 3.5 steals.

    2. Knights G Dayon Griffin had 12 points against USF after shooting 1-of-14 combined over his previous two games.

    3. In the last three games, Emelogu is 5-of-24 from the field.

PREDICTION: SMU 66, Central Florida 62

    Preview: Syracuse at Miami
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

Miami looks to rebound from only its second home loss of the year as it hosts Syracuse in an important ACC matchup Saturday. The Orange are basically in a must-win situation if they hope to make the NCAA Tournament as they face ranked teams in three of their final four games after Saturday.

The Hurricanes were held to 38 percent from the floor and 6-of-21 from behind the arc by No. 3 Virginia's top-ranked defense as the Cavaliers won 59-50 on Tuesday. Freshman guard Chris Lykes scored 19 points and was the only Miami player to have any kind of offensive success as the team shot less than 40 percent for the seventh time this season. Syracuse lost a key game between two bubble teams Wednesday as North Carolina State's Markel Johnson broke a tie game with a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left in the 74-70 victory. "The game was decided because we didn't get to the 3-point shooters three times in the last five or six possessions," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told reporters after the game as N.C. State went 7-for-13 on 3-point attempts in the second half.

    TV: Noon ET, CBS

ABOUT SYRACUSE (17-9, 6-7 ACC): Freshman Oshae Brissett tied a career-high with 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting against N.C. State while sophomore Tyus Battle scored 17 and sits third in ACC scoring at 20.2 points per game. Defense is the key to Syracuse's success, however, and its 2-3 zone has kept opponents to 39.2 percent shooting, good for second in the ACC and seventh in the nation. Junior Frank Howard has led the way on the back end and leads the ACC with 2.04 steals per game, including eight in his last two contests.

ABOUT MIAMI (18-7, 7-6): Lykes has stepped up since the loss of starting guard Bruce Brown Jr. (left-foot surgery Feb. 1) and is averaging 16 points per game over his last three. Sophomore guard Dejan Vasiljevic could also be called upon to play a big offensive role in this game - he is averaging only 9.2 points per game this season but scored 31 in the two contests against Syracuse last season and has hit 18 of his last 41 3-point attempts (43.9 percent). Defensively, Miami sits fourth in the ACC in scoring defense (66.2) and has allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent on only five occasions.

    TIP-INS

    1. Syracuse leads the series 17-8. The teams split a pair of games last season with Miami knocking Syracuse out of the ACC Tournament in the quarterfinals.

    2. Miami has won 36 of its last 40 games at home but is 4-9 against Syracuse in Coral Gables.

    3. Syracuse relies heavily on its starters as Battle leads the nation in minutes per game with 38.4, while fellow starters Frank Howard is fourth (38.0) and Brissett is ninth (37.5).

Preview: Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

Virginia Tech wraps up a three-game road trip Saturday at Georgia Tech looking to continue its late-season surge, a stretch during which the Hokies have won five of their past seven to move into a tie for sixth place in the ACC standings. Despite Wednesday’s 22-point loss at No. 10 Duke, the Hokies keep improving their NCAA tournament resume - highlighted by an upset of third-ranked Virginia last week - but cannot afford a mistake against a Georgia Tech team riding a four-game losing streak.

“Our initial defense was fine,” Virginia Tech guard Justin Bibbs told reporters after the Hokies were outrebounded 36-19 in the 74-52 setback against the Blue Devils. “They just had a lot of second-chance points.” Virginia Tech owns one of the biggest road victories in the nation this season, ending Virginia’s 16-game homecourt winning streak in overtime last Saturday, while the Yellow Jackets seek something positive after dropping eight of their past nine games. Georgia Tech lost to Wake Forest 79-62 on Wednesday, in its first game since losing point guard Jose Alvarado for the season to an elbow injury. “It’s as bad as it’s ever been for me around a team with the injury bug,” Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner told the media afterward.

    TV: Noon ET, ESPN2

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (18-8, 7-6 ACC): Bibbs (13.6 points per game) and Justin Robinson (13.5) lead a balanced scoring attack with five players averaging in double figures. The Hokies are one of the top shooting teams in the country, leading the ACC in field-goal percentage (51.1 percent) and shooting from 3-point range (39.6 percent). Virginia Tech averages 82.5 points per game, which would be the highest total for the program since 1988-89.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (11-15, 4-9): Leading scorer Josh Okogie (19.1 points per game) took over for Alvarado at point guard Wednesday, finishing with one assist and four turnovers. After connecting on just 1-of-9 from 3-point range against Wake Forest, the Yellow Jackets are last in the ACC and 313th nationally in long-range shooting (32.2 percent). Center Ben Lammers scored 14 points against Wake Forest, and averages 11.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest.

    TIP-INS

    1. Georgia Tech's past four opponents have combined to shoot 51.3 percent from 3-point range.

    2. Virginia Tech G Ahmed Hill is 15 points shy of the 1,000-career point mark.

    3. The Hokies have won the past three meetings against the Yellow Jackets, including a 62-61 home triumph last season.

    Preview: Providence at Butler
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

Providence followed up a disappointing home loss with an exhilarating win and now will try to avoid a letdown on the road when it visits Butler for a key Big East clash Saturday afternoon. After an ugly loss to struggling DePaul put a stain on the Friars' postseason resume, they found new life with a 76-71 victory over No. 2 Villanova on Wednesday.

"Coming off the way we played over the weekend and the turnaround emotionally that we just went through. For our players to respond the way they did, it’s almost like a dad," coach Ed Cooley told reporters of his emotions after the upset win. "You see your kids and they're hurting. You don't want to be negative, you pick 'em up and you tell them how proud you are because now today is a proud moment." The Bulldogs are looking for a similar turnaround after losing their third straight with Tuesday's 87-83 setback against Georgetown in the opener of a three-game homestand. They've given up an average of 90.3 points during the slide, which has dropped them behind Providence in the Big East and cast some doubt on their NCAA Tournament chances. Butler lost 70-60 at Providence on Jan. 15, shooting 34.9 percent in its worst offensive effort in conference play.

    TV: Noon ET, FOX

ABOUT PROVIDENCE (17-9, 8-5 Big East): Kyron Cartwright leads the Big East with six assists per game and he paced the Friars with 17 points in the win over Villanova. Four others scored in double figures, including the team's top scorer in Rodney Bullock (14.6), who had 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting after going 6-for-21 over his previous three contests. Jalen Lindsey hit 3-of-6 from 3-point range and ranks second in the conference at 46 percent from beyond the arc, including 3-for-5 en route to 13 points in the earlier matchup with Butler.

ABOUT BUTLER (17-10, 7-7): Each opponent during the three-game losing streak has shot over 50 percent from the field, including a 58.8 percent showing from the Hoyas. "This one, we've really got to inspect and just think about who we want to be moving forward, how we're going to play, and how we're going to fight," coach LaVall Jordan told the media. "I think it's going to be together. We have to do it. It can't just be talk." Kelan Martin, who is third in the Big East in scoring (20.7), had 22 points on 8-of-23 shooting against Georgetown and is averaging 28 points over his last four games.

    TIP-INS

    1. Bulldogs F Tyler Wideman had 19 points while shooting 7-for-9 from the field against Georgetown and leads the Big East in field goal percentage (69.5).

    2. Cartwright needs 22 points to join the 1,000-point club at Providence and just one assist to become the third Friar to record 600 for his career.

    3. Providence has won three of four games at Butler.

    Preview: Texas at Oklahoma
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

Oklahoma was still very much in the thick of the Big 12 race when it last faced Texas, but the Sooners find themselves in a position where they may be hard-pressed to break even in conference play only two weeks later. No. 23 Oklahoma attempts to snap a four-game slide and avenge the defeat that started their losing streak Saturday when it hosts the Longhorns.

The Sooners controlled most of the game and held a nine-point edge with less than eight minutes remaining in the last edition of the Red River Rivalry on Feb. 3 before Texas went on a 14-0 run en route to a 79-74 victory in Austin. Oklahoma dropped a two-point decision at home to West Virginia two days later, lost at Iowa State last Saturday and fell under .500 in Big 12 play following Tuesday's 88-78 setback at conference-leading Texas Tech. Things haven't been much better for the Longhorns since beating the Sooners, sandwiching a pair of one-possession defeats around a blowout loss at TCU last weekend. Texas suffered its third straight loss Monday, giving up a follow-up dunk with eight seconds left to fall 74-73 to Baylor in double overtime.

    TV: Noon ET, ESPN

ABOUT TEXAS (15-11, 5-8 Big 12): The Longhorns, who rank 329th in the country in 3-point percentage (conference-worst 32.1), were unable to follow up on their 10-for-20 performance beyond the arc versus TCU, finishing 3-for-19 and including a 1-for-12 effort from the starting five. Matt Coleman (8.8 points, 4.5 assists) enjoyed his best offensive effort (15 points against the Bears) since pouring in a career-high 22 against Oklahoma, but the freshman guard is averaging only 10 points on 11-of-31 shooting over those three contests. Mohamed Bamba (13.7 points, 10.8 rebounds) leads the conference with 13 double-doubles - including five in his last seven outings - after tallying 16 points and tying a season high with 16 boards Monday.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (16-9, 6-7): Trae Young continues to lead the country in scoring (29.1 points) and assists (9.3), but the freshman sensation is shooting only 35.4 percent (17.1 percent beyond the arc) in his last four games and is coming off a game in which he failed to hit a 3-pointer for the first time in his career (0-for-9). Junior Christian James (12.4 points) has delivered the first two 20-point performances over the last two contests, averaging 22.5 points on 16-of-30 shooting. Rashard Odomes (7.8) scored 15 points in the first meeting to cap off a three-game stretch in which he averaged 16, but the 6-6 junior has totaled 17 points over the last three contests.

    TIP-INS

    1. Oklahoma senior C Khadeem Lattin needs two more blocks to break the program record for the most in a career held by Al Beal (229).

    2. Texas played in its sixth overtime game last Saturday, matching a school record for the most in a season.

    3. The Sooners have won five straight home games against the Longhorns and are 11-1 in Norman this season.

Preview: Iowa State at Kansas State
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

With Kamau Stokes coming off the bench, Kansas State coach Bruce Weber hopes he has found a solution to the Wildcats’ lack of production from his reserves. Sitting alone in fourth place in the Big 12, the Wildcats look to sweep the season series and keep Iowa State winless on the road when the teams meet Saturday.

Stokes, a 5-10 junior guard who had started 70 of his first 71 career games, missed nearly a month this season with a broken foot and has been coming off the bench in the four games since his return, scoring 11 points and knocking down three 3-pointers in an 82-72 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday. The Wildcats' bench totaled 24 points - the most since collecting 30 against USC Upstate on Dec. 5. "He gives us some leadership, some experience off the bench," junior guard Barry Brown said of Stokes, who is averaging 11.5 points this season but has scored just 17 in limited minutes since his return. "He has been here for a few years now. Having him come off the bench and still take a leadership role out there on the court is big time.” Iowa State, which is 0-7 in true road games this season, dropped an 83-77 decision against Kansas on Tuesday as leading scorers Lindell Wigginton and Donovan Jackson combined for 15 points on 4-of-21 shooting from the field.

    TV: 1 p.m., ET ESPNU

ABOUT IOWA STATE (13-12, 4-9 Big 12): Wigginton (16.2 points) and Jackson (15.0), who both shoot over 40 percent beyond the arc, shot a combined 2-of-13 from 3-point range against the Jayhawks, costing the Cyclones a chance for the upset. “Sometimes it’s a make-or-miss game, too,” coach Steve Prohm said. “We didn’t shoot it well enough … You just have to make two or three of them out of those 13 and it’s a different game.” Nick Weiler-Babb had 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 22 minutes off the bench in his first action since missing four games with a knee injury, and freshman Cameron Lard (13.2 points, 8.2 rebounds) continued his stellar season with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 11 rebounds.

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (18-8, 7-6): The Wildcats broke open a close game against the Cowboys with a 19-4 run to end the first half, as Brown finished with 25 points, Xavier Sneed 13 and Dean Wade 12. Brown (16.0 points, 3.5 assists, 1.9 steals) had scored just 37 points on 13-of-49 shooting over his previous five games. In the Big 12 opener on Dec. 29, Wade scored 34 points, Stokes 23 and Brown 21 as the Wildcats beat the Cyclones 91-75.

    TIP-INS

    1. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 138-87, including 80-24 in Manhattan, but the Cyclones have won two straight at Bramlage Coliseum.

    2. Wade (16.1 points, 6.3 rebounds) has scored in double figures in all 13 conference games.

    3. Prior to scoring 82 points and shooting 54.9 percent against the Cowboys, the Wildcats had averaged 55.4 points on 36.8 percent shooting over their previous five games.

    Preview: Michigan State at Northwestern
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

No. 1 Michigan State looks to win its 10th straight and take another step towards the regular-season title in the Big Ten when it travels to Northwestern for a Saturday matchup. The Spartans are tied with Ohio State for the top spot in the conference standings and are coming off a blowout win over Minnesota, while the Wildcats have dropped two straight heading into this game, which will be played in Rosemont, Ill., Northwestern's home court this season.

Forward Miles Bridges leads the way for coach Tom Izzo's squad, averaging 17.3 points, but he's coming off a five-point performance on 1-of-7 shooting against the Golden Gophers. Freshman Jaren Jackson Jr. more than picked up the slack, going for a career-high 27 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, and blocking three shots as he showed his tremendous potential. The Wildcats have four double-figure scorers, led by Scottie Lindsey's 14.6 points per game and Bryant McIntosh's 12.1 points and 5.2 assists per contest, but they've only averaged 69.9 points as a team. Defensively, Northwestern is holding teams to 65.9 points, but they'll have a battle on their hands against the Spartans, who have the highest-scoring offense in the league (83.3 points).

    TV: 2 p.m. ET, Fox

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (25-3, 13-2 Big Ten): The Spartans have one of the top front lines in college basketball, but they also have a deadly amount of shooters from long range, with the ability to put together a fast run with 3-pointers. Against Minnesota, Michigan State went 6-for-6 from beyond the arc to start the game, with guard Cassius Winston hitting three, Jackson two and Bridges one to go up 18-6 in less than five minutes. With five players hitting at least 35 3-pointers this season -- Winston (58), Bridges (55), Matt McQuaid (45), Joshua Langford (36) and Jackson (35) -- defenses get stretched to the limit trying to guard all the shooters, opening up driving lanes and room in the post for forward Nick Ward and making the Spartans one of the harder teams to defend in the country.

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (15-12, 6-8): There has never been a doubt to how valuable McIntosh is to the Northwestern offense, running the show for coach Chris Collins and setting up teammates or scoring himself. So when he was sidelined for most of the second half and overtime against Rutgers with an apparent shoulder injury, it wasn't a surprise that the Wildcats struggled, going from a nine-point halftime advantage to an overtime setback. There's no word on McIntosh's availability against Michigan State, but without him, Anthony Gaines will be pressed into more duty and a very short Northwestern bench becomes even shorter against one of the deeper teams in the country.

    TIP-INS

    1. Michigan State has scored at least 80 points 16 times this season, putting together a 15-1 record in those contests.

    2. Northwestern F Dererk Pardon is third in the Big Ten in field-goal percentage, hitting 62.6 percent of his shots.

    3. The Spartans have won 24 of the last 26 meetings in this series, including the last eight straight.

    Preview: Indiana at Iowa
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

Indiana looks to extend its winning streak to a season-long four games when it faces Iowa on the road Saturday. The Hoosiers cruised past Rutgers (65-43) and Minnesota (80-56) last week before beating Illinois 78-68 on Wednesday to clinch a first-round bye in the Big Ten tournament, and hope to continue their late push for an NIT bid by sweeping the season series with the Hawkeyes, following a 77-64 win on Dec. 4.

"We're playing as well as we have all season and guys are enjoying playing with one another," Indiana coach Archie Miller told reporters. "We're more confident and guys are understanding what we're asking them to do." Iowa has dropped four consecutive games following a 74-59 loss to No. 21 Michigan on Wednesday. The Hawkeyes have surrendered at least 80 points in five of their last six outings and are on pace to finish with their most Big Ten losses in a single season since suffering 14 in 2010-11, which was Fran McCaffery's first year in charge. Iowa is ranked 310th nationally in scoring defense (78.3) and hopes to slow down the hot-shooting Hoosiers, who have finished 50 percent or better from the floor in five of their last eight games.

    TV: 2 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT INDIANA (15-12, 8-7 Big Ten): Juwan Morgan scored 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five blocks in the win against Illinois to register his eighth double-double of the season. Robert Johnson added 14 points and six rebounds to move into 26th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,339 points, while freshman Aljami Durham tallied 14 points as the Hoosiers shot 59.1 percent from the field against the Fighting Illini. Devonte Green suffered an ankle injury in the second half but is expected to recover in time to face the Hawkeyes.

ABOUT IOWA (12-16, 3-12): Freshman centre Luka Garza led the way with 22 points to go along with six rebounds, but the Hawkeyes were undone by 16 turnovers. "My teammates were giving me the ball in a position I could score," Garza told reporters. "I've continued to do a better job being less antsy with the ball and I'm at my best when I'm just playing and not overthinking." Isaiah Moss added 12 points, while Tyler Cook contributed 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds against the Wolverines.

    TIP-INS

    1. Indiana has won four of the last five meetings with Iowa.

    2. The Hawkeyes haven't lost five straight games in over seven years.

    3. Morgan is averaging 19 points and 8.8 rebounds over his last five games.

    Preview: Alabama at Kentucky
    Gracenote
    Feb 16, 2018

Alabama is determined to get back to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in 12 years. The Crimson Tide are playing some of their best basketball of the season, and will look to extend their winning streak to three games Saturday as they visit SEC rival Kentucky.

Having not participated in March Madness since 2012, the Avery Johnson-led Crimson Tide came into the season just looking to improve on last year's sixth-place conference showing. But they've done much, much more than that, winning each of their past five games against ranked teams - most recently a 78-50 drubbing of Tennessee that Alabama followed up with a comfortable 15-point triumph over LSU. Next up: A road date with a Wildcats team that had high hopes heading into the season but is stumbling to the finish line, having dropped four consecutive games. Wednesday's 10-point loss to Auburn gave coach John Calipari his longest losing streak since taking the reins in 2009.

    TV: 2 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT ALABAMA (17-9, 8-5 SEC): Much of the focus in Tuscaloosa has been on freshman Collin Sexton, who is enjoying a terrific campaign in which he is averaging a team-best 18.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in six straight games entering the weekend. But he's getting plenty of scoring help, as three other Crimson Tide players are averaging 10 or more points; Alabama had just two players in double figures last season. Donta Hall is second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points and has been the team's best player over the past two games, averaging 18.5 points on 16-of-20 shooting while contributing 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocked shots and two steals.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (17-9, 6-7): The Wildcats rank inside the top 100 nationally in field goal percentage (46.6) but have been far worse in two key areas, sitting 273rd in free-throw success rate (68.6 percent) and 285th in 3-point shooting (32.9 percent). Team scoring leader Kevin Knox (15.5 ppg) is averaging 18.5 points over his past two games after being held to just 15 combined points over the first two games of Kentucky's current losing skid. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander broke out with a 30-point game in an overtime victory over Vanderbilt on Jan. 30 but was limited to just nine points last time out against the Tigers; he has misfired on all six of his 3-point attempts during the Wildcats' losing streak.

    TIP-INS

    1. Three of Alabama's five wins over ranked opponents have come by 18 points or more.

    2. Hall ranks second in the country in field-goal percentage (74.5).

    3. Kentucky has made just 125 3-pointers; only seven Division I schools have connected on fewer.

    PREDICTION: Alabama 76, Kentucky 73
