Jeff Siegel's Primed and Ready List (July 14, 2021)

    July 14, 2021
Updated every Wednesday, the Primed and Ready List identifies horses that have recorded an outstanding workout within the past seven days and appear ready for a top performance. Workouts originate from Southern California (Santa Anita/Del Mar), New York (Saratoga/Belmont Park) and Florida (Palm Meadows) and can be viewed by clicking the link included in the description or at xbtv.com. Horses are removed following their first race after appearing on the list.

    Workouts through July 14, 2021

    BOBBY BO – (B. Baffert) July 12, 2021, Santa Anita, 6f, 1:12.1h

    View Workout

Breezing workout for B. Baffert while finishing with a ton left, final 5/8ths in :24 flat, :48.2 and 1:00.3 from the half mile pole to the 7/8 pole, never taking a deep breath. Somehow managed to get himself beat in his debut but should make amends next time.
    *
    *
    CODY’S WISH – (W. Mott) July 9, 2021, Saratoga, 4f, :48b TT

    View Workout

Finished smoothly without being asked, plenty left while appearing quite sharp for Mott. Didn’t get the best of runs in his debut when finishing third in an extended sprint and seems sure to step forward considerably next time.
    *
    *
    LUCK – (R. Baltas) July 13, 201, Del Mar, 5f, 1:01.4h tc du

    View Workout

Broke off a length in front of Bodhicitta (same time) and maintained that advantage to the wire in breezing drill around dogs on turf for R. Baltas. Lightly-raced filly from France moves like a very nice type and seems fairly fit. Has conditions and will make the entries soon.
    *
    *
    M IS FOR MAGIC – (P. Eurton), July 12, 2021, Santa Anita, 4f, :47.3h

    View Workout

Comebacker went nicely in easy half mile drill while getting cranked up for P. Eurton, final three furlongs in a sharp :35.1 without being asked. Coming back better than she left, it would appear, would love to see her in a high-priced maiden claimer this time around.
    *
    *
    REALM OF LAW – (C. Brown) July 10, 2021, Saratoga, 4f, :47.4b TT

    View Workout

Solo half mile breeze for C. Brown, under wraps throughout while sharp and eager. Still a maiden after three starts but shouldn’t be one for long. Moves fine on dirt but might be more comfortable on grass.
    *
    *
    SUMPTER – (R. Mandella) July 11, 201, Del Mar, 4f, :48.1hg

    View Workout

Gate work inside Wicked (same time) and was best every step of the way while under wraps and able to go much faster if turned loose, splits of :24.2, :36.1 and :48.1, smooth as silk. Much ability, it would appear, War Front juvenile is bred for turf and should be capable of winning sprinting or routing. Excellent prospect.

    Workouts Through July 7, 2021

    CURIOUS INJI - (J. Mullins) July 4, 2021, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.3h
    View Workout
    *
    *
Under wraps every step of the way in solo training track drill, final half mile in :24.1 and :48.4, plenty left late. Unplaced in three career starts, most recently in a maiden claiming miler (stumbled badly at the start), but the daughter of Misremembered surely appears capable of better and seems likely to surface in a winnable spot early in the Del Mar season.
    *
    *
    LADY MYSTIFY - (P. Eurton) July 4, 2021, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00h
    View Workout

Never asked in sharp five furlong main track drill, final three furlongs in :11.2 and :35.3, plenty left late. Had nothing behind her when graduating by 18 lengths last time out and will get tested on the raise, but the daughter of Bernardini seems to be made of the stuff. Ready to step forward again.
    *
    *
    SEMPER FIDELIS - (S. Joseph, Jr.) July 3, 2021, Palm Meadows, 4f, :47.1h
    View Workout

Barn tends to let them roll in the a.m., but this lightly-raced son of Fast Anna was under cruise control throughout in sharp half mile main track drill, final three furlongs in :35 flat. Been away since December but appears to be returning better than he left and should be hard to beat vs. older maiden special weight foes.
    *
    *
    WIT - (T. Pletcher) July 4, 2021, Belmont Park, 5f, 1:01.2b TT
    View Workout

In company inside Lady Valentine (same time) in training track drill, breaking off a length in front and then finishing a similar margin ahead at the wire, some restraint early and then coasting through the lane (galloped out well, too) while clearly best. Practical Joke juvenile won at first asking impressively and seems likely to be seen in stakes company at Saratoga early in the season.

AI Picks: Canterbury Park Stakes | Wed., July 14, 2021

    July 13, 2021 | By Jeremy Plonk
Wednesday night’s 12-race Canterbury Park not only features a quartet of stakes, but also will be featured in the Canterbury Challenge handicapping contest. The $300 buy-in includes a $200 live bankroll on all the Thoroughbred races on the card (Races 1-8). You can play the contest online at Xpressbet.com.

To help you tackle the stakes races, the 1/ST BET app’s artificial intelligence provides its look at the fields. Selections provided by the 1/ST BET app measure each contender against the 10 leading factors for each race. The 1/ST BET app looks at 52 handicapping factors and more than 200,000 past races to determine its AI selections. You can use the automated handicapping factors, or create your own factor filters to incorporate angles you prefer.

We’ve included the track’s morning line odds with each entrant.

Canterbury Park // Frances Genter Stakes // Race 2 // 6:40 PM ET

    #1 Star of the North (6-5) // 35%W
    #5 Rozey Cheeks (12-1) // 27%W
    #3 Hell of the North (2-1) // 18%W
    #2 Sailing Along (9-2) // 11%W

Comments: Star in the North has won 5 straight races, including 3 stakes, and will start as a heavy favorite. She’s rail speed with a high likelihood to go wire-to-wire against only 4 rivals.

Canterbury Park // Victor Myers Stakes // Race 5 // 8:10 PM ET

    #7 Thealligatorhunter (8-5) // 31%W
    #4 Bayou Benny (9-5) // 21%W
    #1 Magician’s Holiday (8-1) // 13%W
    #2 Westa Waverly (12-1) // 10%W

Comments: The Alligatorhunter is 2-for-2 at the current meet with victories by a combined margin of more than 10 lengths. Bayou Benny debuted a 12-length winner in a fast time at Canterbury on June 10 and will be tested for class against stakes winners like Westa Waverly.

Canterbury Park // Ralph Strangis Stakes // Race 6 // 8:40 PM ET

    #4 Cinco Star (5-2) // 23%W
    #5 Dame Plata (5-1) // 16%W
    #3 Mr. Jagermeister (9-2) // 15%W
    #1 Drop of Golden Sun (4-1) // 11%W

Comments: Minnesota-bred dirt sprint star Mr. Jagermeister goes out of his element for this 7-1/2 furlong turf test around 2 turns. Speedball Drop of Golden Sun will try to take them as far as he can from the rail, and was runner-up in this race last summer. Cinco Star has the most turf credentials and is defending champion in this race. He also does his best running on the engine.

Canterbury Park // Minnesota Turf Distaff Stakes // Race 7 // 9:10 PM ET

    #5 Firstmate (5-1) // 24%W
    #2 Ready to Runaway (3-1) // 15%W
    #8 Grand Prize (6-1) // 12%W
    #11 Rental Pool (12-1) // 8%W

Comments: Firstmate won this race last year, but has lost 6 straight since. Her last runner-up in open company over the distance and course was a positive move. The top 3 finishers from the dirt sprint stakes, the Lady Slipper, are rematched going 7-1/2 furlongs on turf. Ready to Runaway, second in that common race, also was second in last year’s Minnesota Turf Distaff Stakes to Firstmate.

Allen Jerkens for 3-year-old sprinters … The 2021 Florida Sire Stakes series kicks off July 31 with the Dr. Fager and Desert Vixen for the juveniles … The Kelly Breen-trained Pickin’ Time, fourth in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes in January during the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet, is among the probable starters for Saturday’s Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth, which will be drawn Wednesday.

    Trends Last Week

-- Favorites were an unimaginable 6-33 last week, clicking at only 18% after a 2-week run topping 45%. Jockey Edgard Zayas was only 1-13 on chalk.

-- Trainer David Fawkes was on point at 6: 3-1-1, including Noble Drama’s win in the City of Dania overnight stakes. His runners posted a whopping $3.47 ROI for every $1 bet behind winners at $7, $14 and $19.

-- Trainer Jorge Delgado won with both starters, a $5 winner and a $19 winner, both sprinting on dirt. The barn has run first or second with 5 straight local starters dating back to July 3.

-- Trainer Jose Gallegos went 3: 2-1-0, pulling a 14-1 upset to go along with a 9-5 winner. He was runner-up at 10-1 odds. All 3 starters were in the maiden claiming ranks. The barn was just 1-20 since the start of April at Gulfstream prior.

-- Trainer Kathleen O’Connell has gone 7-16 over the past 3 weeks with $9, $12 and $13 winners sprinkled in.

-- Overall, 18 jockeys shared the 33 wins with only Samy Camacho (4-23) winning more than 3.

Pimlico Stats: Speed Factors Continue Dominance

    July 13, 2021 | By Jeremy Plonk
We canvass the 1/ST BET statistical database each week to bring you up to speed with racing at Pimlico. Check back weekly for statistical trends and tidbits for premier racing in Maryland. And be sure to support Pimlico by betting with 1/ST BET, the official betting app of Maryland Jockey Club.

    Headlines

$10,307 is in the Rainbow 6 jackpot carryover pool heading into this week’s Friday-Sunday racing schedule … Nominations have closed for Pimlico’s 4-stakes turf spectacular on July 24, headlined by the Grade 3 $200,000 Baltimore-Washington International Turf Cup, led by the likes of Pixelate, Field Pass and English Bee … The Mid-Atlantic circuit picks up another track July 19 when Colonial Downs opens for its meet that runs through Sept. 1. Note the Virginia circuit will race Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday with no Pimlico overlap, so expect many of the jockeys and trainers to commute and support both meets … Purses were raised 15% at Pimlico as of July 2 for the extended meet that runs through Aug. 22.

    Stronach 5

The Stronach 5 is on temporary hiatus with only 2 tracks from the 1/ST family in action.

1/ST BET Top Factors Last Week:

Horseplayers using the 1/ST BET app saw the most success with these 3 of the 52 handicapping filters for Pimlico, each posting at least 31% wins and a flat-bet profit. The factor Avg. Speed Last 3 was a top-3 factor for the third straight week.

    Best Speed Distance
    Best Lifetime Speed
    Avg. Speed Last 3

    Trends Last Week

-- Trainer Jamie Ness went 4: 2-1-1 with $5 and $10 winners as well as a 17-1 runner-up. Both wins came in dirt sprints. The barn was 12-24 in the exacta last week between Pimlico, Parx and Delaware Park.

-- Trainer Tim Keefe posted a 5: 2-0-2 record, winners paying $8 and $17 on dirt and turf. The victories turned around a 1-for-13 Pimlico cold streak for the barn since the start of June.

-- Jockey Forest Boyce is 11-for-17 in the exacta over the past 2 weeks with 8 runner-up finishes.

-- Jockey Julien Pimentel made the most of limited mounts, going 5: 3-0-0. His winners paid $3, $10 and $11 for 3 different barns. Pimentel had 2 turf scores on the July 11 program.

-- Jockey Jaime Rodriguez raided from Delaware Park for a 3: 2-1-0 mark, winning both dirt mounts. He had a $10 score and a 17-1 runner-up.

-- Jockey Yomar Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a whopping $94 winner to go along with a juicy $14 score. His average mount was 31-1.

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Parx Racing - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#10 Boom Boom Girl Not the type I usually like as she heads into her 15th lifetime start, but her form is superficially darkened by three poor starts without blinkers. She showed some life again last out when getting them again, and jockey Pennington is 41% with this type of MCL turf route horse here the last couple years.
#4 Pegasus in Flight She's the one to beat, but it's worth noting that she has not been a serious threat late in any of her last three starts as the chalk. Lopez has been aces on the turf here.
#1 Sky Queen Think those who believed in her at short prices in recent races might have cause to wheel back one more time. She gets blinkers while moving to turf for a sire that can get turf horses, even if he connects more with dirt horses.
Race Summary Boom Boom Girl is short on excuses but gets to team up with the most impressive MCL turf route rider here in recent years. The presence of Pegasus in Flight should keep the price playable.
    Parx Racing - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#1 Forest Fire A field full of nibblers with tactical speed might give this guy a chance to try and steal it from the rail. He has done his best work when racing right up on the splits, and he should get that kind of run in a spot where the rest may be content to settle just off him.
#5 Promised Storm He's quick enough to be in the conversation up top early if they want in, and she is worth a mid-range price look underneath with the boys.
#4 Chilly in Charge Dropper comes out of a trio of stakes tries, but he doesn't have the kind of positional pace that most of these do, and he could be left with a bit too much to do behind a modest set of splits.
Race Summary Forest Fire may be able to go from the rail after posting a gate-to-wire win with open company last time out. This is a compact and competitive race made more difficult by the murky potential pace scenario, and even #2 Hockey Puck brings reliable form that fits.
    Parx Racing - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#2 The Want of a Nail He showed tactical speed going short off the bench, and he has good back route form that could make him competitive here. Second start off the layoff might bring out his best from close range.
#8 Mr. Shades of Gray He was a comfortable winner at this level last out when making his local turf debut, and there's little reason to suspect he won't bring another good one here.
#4 Delaware Destroyer He seems like a good fit with the locals after some reliable Tampa turf tries since adding Lasix, and he has just enough pace in him to find a good spot into the first turn.
Race Summary The Want of a Nail steps up off a really nice comeback race, and he's fast enough to play an early part with these on the move around two turns.

    Northfield Park - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#9 PERPETUAL ROCK Towers over field on paper, second-tier starting spot the only drawback.
#1 FIREBALL SPECIAL Followed rally on 5-2 winner, finished second on sloppy track.
#3 MAJORS FIRST LADY Can turn tables on 'Fireball' with better post draw at better price.
Race Summary Perpetual Rock, passed by the even-money favorite through a :56.4 back half two starts ago, needs only to duplicate that effort to defeat eight rivals who are a woeful 3-for-260 combined. Play 9-1 and 9-3 exactas.
    Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#3 DUCKIES DYNASTY Hard duel took its toll, could take some catching today.
#2 BARRAGE HANOVER Chased 2-to-5 fave through :55 back half and ran second.
#4 MAAJAACKKOBE Second in last pair at this level but 1-26 on the year.
Race Summary Duckies Dynasty, out and moving in the second quarter, dueled head-and-head with the odds-on favorite before tiring in the stretch on a sloppy Pocono Downs track. He can go non-stop on the lead in this spot and is well worth the 3-1 morning-line price.
    Hoosier Park - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#1 CHARLATAN HANOVER Equipment change could by key if qualifier is indicator.
#8 MASSIVE GIRL Hit board in 3 of 5 starts, plagued by bad posts.
#4 GENERAL TSO Rallied from far back to finish third despite brief mishap in local debut.
Race Summary Charlatan Hanover, heavily bet when last seen 3 months ago, got away well from post 9 but broke stride. He romped in his comeback qualifier and races first-time hoppled from the rail. Play a 1-ALL exacta.

    Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

    Indiana Grand - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#1 Wellington Wonder On the board in all four of her races this year and turns back slightly to a mile, a distance at which she was victorious three races back. Speed makes her a factor and she has shown several times that she can win going two turns.
#3 Drinkatthecreek Just missed at this level two back and then tired in a sprint stakes; back to allowance ranks and two turns.
#4 Sentimentaljourney Closed well for third in the Shelby County Stakes sprint last out and he gets back to two turns.
Race Summary Wellington Wonder is tough on the front end in long races and looks like the one to catch.
    Indiana Grand - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#2 Nobody Listens Scratched out of an allowance on Tuesday to go for this; should be able to handle the turf, but really is a standout if this moves to the main track.
#6 A Few too Many Has relatives that were partial to turf and he makes his first grass appearance after running fifth.
#1 Troubled Justice Made a strong late run and won going away in her only start; that was on the turf and at two turns, just like this.
Race Summary Nobody Listens has the speed to get to the lead and that will make him tough to beat; he comes off a fourth-place finish in a distance stakes race that probably prepared him for this.
    Indiana Grand - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#8 Hurricane Highway Has been on four tracks in his last four races and is well spotted in this sprint; his last win came in allowance at Turfway last December.
#5 Verb Showed speed in good races at Churchill and other than this last one (11th at CD), he has been competitive against top company.
#1 Double Tuff Won back-to-back Indiana-bred stakes races last out and most recently was second in a stakes race he won last year moves to open company but has performed well with similar.
Race Summary Hurricane Highway has mixed it up with decent company and has an eye-catching closing move on occasion; can make his run against these.

    Thistledown - Race #4 - Post: 2:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 80

    Rating:

    #1 MOVES LIKE ALI (ML=8/1)
    #8 CHARLEE'S MAGIC (ML=7/2)
    #5 MAKE THE CALL (ML=9/2)

MOVES LIKE ALI - This gelding is uppermost in (EPS) earnings per start. Check out this one in the saddling ring. CHARLEE'S MAGIC - Got to appreciate a good work horse. This gelding's last work was second fastest of the day for the distance. Have to make this gelding a win candidate; he comes off a good race on June 17th. MAKE THE CALL - The jockey and trainer combination here have a high win percentage when they unite. Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Unquestionably on edge for a good one today. This gelding is in good physical condition, having run a strong race on Jun 17th, finishing third.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 LITTLE BLAKER (ML=3/1), #7 OFTEN ENOUGH (ML=5/1), #6 DEER CREEK ROAD (ML=6/1),

LITTLE BLAKER - This vulnerable equine just hasn't been winning as the chalk. OFTEN ENOUGH - Would have to perk up off that third place finish last time to make an impact here. Tough to put your cash on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as often as this one does. The fig last out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class figure of today's contest. Mark this racer as a likely underpriced equine. DEER CREEK ROAD - Doubtful that this racer can win this sprint after not showing speed in that last route race. Finished fourth last time out. Would have to advance to be on the board in today's event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 MOVES LIKE ALI to win if you can get at least 4/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,5,8]

    Race 7 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $13400 Class Rating: 83

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE APRIL 14, 2021 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 5 DRIZZY 5/2
    # 2 EL CHAIRMAN 8/1
    # 8 ZUCCHINI 7/2

DRIZZY is the top wager in this race. Must be given consideration based on the very good speed figure earned in the last competition. Has garnered strong Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races in the past. Brown and Carreno have won 40 percent of their races giving this pony a solid chance. EL CHAIRMAN - Mangalee will almost certainly be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in this event. Could best this group based on the speed figure - 83 - of his last effort. ZUCCHINI - Will more than likely be one of the leaders of the pack going into the midpoint of the contest.

    Race 4 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 73

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE JANUARY 14, 2021. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE DECEMBER 14, 2020 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $4,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 6 UNO TIGRESS 7/2
    # 3 LANA 12/1
    # 8 SUSIKIN 6/1

UNO TIGRESS is the best wager in this race. She has been racing strongly recently while recording strong Equibase Speed Figures. Bennett makes a blinkers change (going on today), looking for better results. Don't overlook this filly in your wagers - very dangerous with Spanabel aboard. LANA - Posted a solid speed figure in the latest race. Can run another good one in this affair. I like the jockey on this mare - strong chance to win the race. SUSIKIN - Ran a strong last race. The average class fig alone makes this one a solid contender.

Arizona Downs - Race #5 - Post: 4:22pm - Maiden Optional Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 63

    Rating:

    #3 AUTISM WARRIOR (ML=6/1)
    #4 BOURBON AND WATER (ML=4/1)

AUTISM WARRIOR - A wise man taught me to play the lone speed horse. Take a look at this one. This gelding ran well in his last race but just couldn't beat the winner. Note that he was well in front of the show horse, and looks like a major contender in this field. I like to play this handicapping angle, a pony coming back off a solid effort within the last 30 days. Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. BOURBON AND WATER - Jockey hops right back on board after getting to know the thoroughbred by riding last out. That's always a helpful angle. Have to make this gelding a solid contender; he comes off a good race on June 30th. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should race well today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 WRITE ITINTHE DUST (ML=8/5), #1 TW SKIPPING STONES (ML=3/1), #2 TIZTRUCULENT (ML=5/1),

WRITE ITINTHE DUST - This less than sharp equine has been a bummer for the bettors as the favorite time and time again. TW SKIPPING STONES - 3/1 is not worth it for any entrant in a sprint of 5 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a short distance event recently. No pace in this group to help set-up his closing rush. Don't believe this pony will make an impact in today's event. That last speed figure was common when compared with today's class rating. TIZTRUCULENT - Tough to take this pony at the odds after the finish position (fourth) in the last affair. If you keep choosing these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be dissatisfied frequently. This stretch-runner looks to have little chance without an early speed duel at the front.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 AUTISM WARRIOR to win if we can get at least 5/2 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [3,4]
