Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 4 Analysis

    July 26, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the week with a 10 race card. The feature comes in Race 6, a Preferred Trot with a $34,000 purse. The 0.20 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 4, and that sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 4

1-HP Mama B (2-1)-This filly has only one loss this year and has won the last 3 in impressive fashion. Filion isn't here tonight and Baillargeon is between the pipes but he is capable. If at 100% and with a fair trip it could be picture time at a very short price but won't trust enough to single.
6-Imaextraspecial (5/2)-Muscle Mass filly is no slouch and banked over $223k in 2020. Comes off an efficient win at GeoD and Young will replace regular pilot Henry. Should be put in play early and could get a pocket ride behind the chalk. Will need a top effort but comes off a win and maybe this time Mama can be collared down the lane.

    Race 5

1-Zar E IP (8-1)-Taking a swing for a price in a tough race and looking for an improved effort versus this company. Should be put in play and could surprise for the 1st win of 2021. (0-4)
3-Town Delinquent (3-1)-Fits well with this group and Young has won with her at Wbsb at the end of last year. Has hit the board in 4 of 6 here with 2 wins and should be a player.

    Race 6

1-Memo (10-1)-Did not catch a strong winner #2 last time, but with an alert start got a nice pocket ride. Draws inside and may trip out again but this time could be 1st under the wire.
2-Treasured Tee (5/2)-Made every call a winning one in last and although McNair won't between the pipes Drury could work a similar trip. Best to not overlook off the last impressive score.
4-Run Director (2-1)-Comes off a sharp win in the 1st start on Lasix. Steps-up after posting a 151.4 winning time which was the fastest since 2019 and it's best to not overlook.

    Race 7

2-HP Running Mass (8-1)-Has hit the board in 3 of 4 starts at Wbsb with 1 win. Will excuse the last break at RidC, before that was in fine form and shouldn't blush at the company. Can be in play from the start and will probably offer a solid price.
3-Warrawee Whisper (7/2)-Has been in the hunt in all 3 races at this class. The best effort came last week and raced up close to quick fractions to cash a 2nd place check. Looking for another solid try and can end up in the winner's circle with a good steer.
5-Full Of Muscles (3-1)-Came off the bench hot with 2 straight wins and the last was a sparkler from post 10. Will face better tonight but draws well and has hit the board in 8 of 10 at Mohawk with 2 pictures.

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Parx Racing - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#6 Hope Takes Over Her turf form has actually been pretty good, and she might offer a fair price off the main-track clunker last time out. Third start off the layoff peak?
#8 Tilsa Forward player should be in the mix from the start, but she isn't always known for digging in late, so I wouldn't want too short a price to land here.
#3 Magical Mesa She has been in with some better groups recently, and those even types of tries might transfer okay against this group.
Race Summary Hope Takes Over has never run a bad one on the grass, and the price should be right to see if she can get back to one of her better tries here with some dark main-track form clouding the page.
    Parx Racing - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#5 Judicial Mandate Adds Lasix for the first time while making this first start off the layoff, and he might be a bit better on dry land after fading late in the mud when last seen.
#7 Bode O He has generally not been a serious threat late in most races, but he has been in some quick spots and might be good enough to handle this group today.
#1 Fore Harp He showed some pace in a good debut effort, but I worry that the rail draw is going to force his hand a bit too much out of the gate.
Race Summary Judicial Mandate races with Lasix for his first start of 2021, and he should offer a playable price in a spot where I don't really trust some of the more logical players.
    Parx Racing - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#6 Borracho He has to turn the tables on a couple of these, but there are a few serious pace players signed on, and this one might be there for the taking late.
#4 Admiral Abe He has a mild rating gear that should serve him well in this spot, and he is in really good form right now. Chance right back.
#8 Wentz It's tough to argue with his overall form, but he's probably going to get bet again here with what might not be the most advantageous race shape waiting for him.
Race Summary Borracho might get a decent setup from off the pace today in a very competitive race, and he should offer a better number this time around after that sort of flat finish behind Wentz last out.

    Pocono Downs - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#2 TRAIN All aboard for a traffic-free express ride.
#5 FRANKASAURUS Three wins and two breaks in his last five starts.
#8 VINCENTI Went off stride early as the 8-5 favorite, draws outside.
Race Summary Train's repeat attempt at this level was foiled by a 1-to-5 winner and a back-pedaling pace setter that forced him to re-group to finish third after he was shuffled. Play a 2-ALL exacta with today's Best Bet on top.
    Century Downs - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#2 OVERACTIVE Parked long way against similar, early position will be key.
#7 STAR FLIGHT Led until stretch on 3-day rest, gets back on Lasix.
#1 CHASING SHADOWS Won from on and off the pace in July.
Race Summary Overactive, 12/3-3-3 on the year, can turn the tables against many of the same rivals she met last week when she came out before the half-mile marker and grinded first-over until a mid-stretch fade. Note that she was entered Monday and could be running on short rest.
    Yonkers - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#5 AMERICAN NITRO Reserved early, trapped in middle half, evenly in stretch.
#1 MATT MAJOR No factor in split race that timed one second faster, moves outside in.
#6 VILLAGE CHAMP Pocketed in front of 'Nitro,' kicked clear for 19th win in 54th start.
Race Summary American Nitro followed pocket-sitting winner Village Champ while trapped by the outer flow but came up empty in the stretch. He was a bit headstrong early and could be sent off the gate in an ideal pace-controlling spot. Play 5-1 and 5-6 exactas.

    Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

    Indiana Grand - Race #4
    Picks Notes
#1 Itasca Just missed in a sprint two back and then whistled going long; makes his first off the claim by Walker and has enough speed to stay in the hunt and enough kick to be a strong late factor.
#2 Jamming Cameron Seemingly owned Fan Duel/Fairmount with four straight wins, ranging from bottom claim to optional claiming; trainer Ralph Martinez has suited him up for all four and has done an impressive job. Big player on the front end.
#3 Polo Art Was a clear winner in his two here this year and is 10 of 21 overall over the strip; had gone nearly two years without a win but is back in high gear.
Race Summary Itasca can benefit from following a pace war and can benefit from saving an inside run; can show some power late.
    Indiana Grand - Race #5
    Picks Notes
#2 Miss Twenty Makes her first local start after running fourth in the Goldfinch at Prairie Meadows; has been with quality rivals and has the class to prevail.
#3 Kynance Turns back from two-turn races at Turfway and comes in off a four-month layoff; had a string of three straight wins early in the year and was an easy winner in September in her last Indiana Grand appearance.
#7 Strong Odor Was too late in her bid when second over this course two back and since then was second at Churchill; has kept good company.
Race Summary Miss Twenty is a decent traveler and has some races on her form that would get her to the winner's circle here; can wear them down in this spot.
    Indiana Grand - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#7 Strong Words Was along for fourth last time in his first against winners and performed well over the strip; has been on an off track in his last threat and can be a factor regardless of surface conditions.
#4 Manuelito Made a big run and missed by a nose last out has been second in three straight and can be right there again.
#2 Good Sugar Was a narrowly beaten third last out and seeks his first win in a year; potential late threat.
Race Summary Strong Words is steady mover that can gradually catch up and take over late; can succeed in his second try against winners.

    Race 6 - SA - 8.0f on the Turf. Purse: $35000 Class Rating: 91

INNER TURF FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE STARTED FOR A CLAIMING PRICE OF $25,000 OR LESS AND WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE AT A MILE OR OVER SINCE MAY 26 ALLOWED 2 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 9 EXTRASEXYBIGDADDEE 2/1
    # 1 QUID 5/1
    # 4 PRINCE OF CAPS 15/1

EXTRASEXYBIGDADDEE should be supported as the wager in here. Has to be considered against this group of horses in this race displaying quite good figs lately and an average speed rating of 86 under similar conditions. QUID - Recorded a formidable Equibase Speed Figure last time out. He has very strong class ratings, averaging 89, and has to be given consideration in here. PRINCE OF CAPS - He has competitive class ratings, averaging 86, and has to be given a chance for this race. He should be given a shot given the formidable speed figures.

    Race 4 - SA - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $16500 Class Rating: 92

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE STARTED FOR A CLAIMING PRICE OF $5,000 OR LESS IN THEIR LAST FIVE STARTS. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JUNE 26 ALLOWED 2 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 6 DR. FORMAN 8/1
    # 2 JAMMING CAMERON 6/5
    # 3 POLO ART 8/5

DR. FORMAN is my choice especially at 8/1. Handler has sharp win rate (23 percent) at this distance and surface. Has longshot potential and could score at a big price. Should be given a shot in this race if only for the very good speed fig earned in the last race. JAMMING CAMERON - Strong average Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this equine a definite contender. Martinez has him trained strongly to break promptly out of the gate. POLO ART - Recorded a reliable Equibase Speed Fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest. He has a good opportunity in this competition as trainer, Klopp, has strong win clip with horses going this distance.

    Louisiana Downs - Race #7 - Post: 5:21pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 74

    Rating:

    #9 GOLIATH RIDGE (ML=6/1)
#8 ALWAYS ON THE RUN (ML=9/2)
    #5 SERBIAN SAILOR (ML=6/1)

GOLIATH RIDGE - Such a strong closer. He'll try his best to catch the pace and pass them on the way to the wire. A campaigner coming back this rapidly after a sharp effort is a good omen. ALWAYS ON THE RUN - Ranked the highest in earnings per race entered. Another sign that this equine is the class of the race. SERBIAN SAILOR - Don't often see a beneficial ROI like +999. This jockey/trainer pair has done well together over the last 12 months.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 ROCKDALE (ML=3/1), #4 WHISKEY OVER ICE (ML=9/2), #7 MOCITO ROYALE (ML=5/1),

ROCKDALE - July 2nd is the last time we've seen this gelding around. Have to be a little bit leery. WHISKEY OVER ICE - Should be difficult for this animal to beat this group off of that last fig. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list. MOCITO ROYALE - The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this horse as a possibly overvalued contestant.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #9 GOLIATH RIDGE on the win end if we get at least 3/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [5,8,9]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    Box [5,8,9] Total Cost: $6
    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: [5,8,9] with [5,8,9] with [2,5,7,8,9] with [2,5,7,8,9] Total Cost: $36

    Delaware Park - Race #8 - Post: 4:45pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 61

    Rating:

    #7 DRINK MORE BOURBON (ML=6/1)
    #9 FIELD OFFICER (ML=7/2)

DRINK MORE BOURBON - Gorham drops him down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping info to figure that this horse has a shot at this level. I am keen on that most recent outing on June 28th at Delaware Park where he finished third. After a pair of sprints, he's routing today, which is probably what this gelding wants to do. FIELD OFFICER - Really figure this thoroughbred is going to be close at the finish line.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 MAKOTO (ML=5/2), #10 GALTERO (ML=9/2), #6 GOLDEN GALLANT (ML=8/1),

MAKOTO - Hasn't been on the Delaware Park oval in the last few weeks. Cause for some concern. GALTERO - When looking at today's class rating, he will have to garner a much better speed rating than last time out to battle in this dirt route. GOLDEN GALLANT - Registered a substandard speed rating last time around the track in a $25,000 Maiden Claiming race on Jul 15th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 DRINK MORE BOURBON is the play if we get odds of 2/1 or better
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [7,9]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    Pass
    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: Skip

    1* on Washington Nationals +108
The Key: The Washington Nationals will be hungry to end their 4-game losing streak heading into this series with the rival Phillies. I like the price we are getting on the Nationals with what I've seen from Joe Ross this season. He has been at his best on the highway, sporting a 3.21 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 9 road starts this year. He is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his last 3 outings with 26 strikeouts in 20 innings. Ross sports a 1.42 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 5 lifetime starts against the Phillies as well. Take Washington.

    1* MLB - Reds/Cubs FREE PICK on UNDER 8.5
Monday's Free MLB Pick is on the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs to go UNDER the total of 8.5. I just don't see either offense doing much in this one. Reds will have Wade Miley on the mound. He's been outstanding, posting a 2.72 ERA and 1.179 WHIP in 17 starts. He's also got a 1.29 ERA in his last 3 starts. Kyle Hendricks has been on top of his game of late. In his last 4 starts, he's allowed 2 or fewer runs, while going at least 6 innings in each outing. Bet the UNDER 8.5!
