Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Pick 5 Analysis

    August 2, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
There will be a $10,000 guaranteed Pick 5 pool tonight at Yonkers Raceway as no one hit the bet on Friday. The sequence starts in Race 5, which will include a $2,777 carryover and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 5

1-Alottbettor N (3-1)-The Jenn B barn is booking 31% winners over the last 30 days. This 10-year-old has won 2 straight since switching trainers. Steps-up but still fits with this crew and is in a spot to get the top and not look back.
4-Dancin Dragon (4-1) -After beating similar in the spring, stepped-up and was in too deep since. Returns to a spot to shine and should be a player tonight.
5-Our Max Phactor N (5/2)-Drops and draws well in a race without a true standout. Bartlett should have the 9-year-old in play and may take a pocket ride behind #1.

    Race 6

2-Peace Out Posse (3-1)-Got on the engine and just missed by a 1/2 length in last, versus the class right above. Looks like a wise play to include off the drop.
6-Elver Hanover (5/2)-Comes off an even effort in Yonkers debut versus some nice 3 & 4-year-olds. Burke trainee is a speedy sort and can bring it on any size oval. Should be tough to beat if dialed on high.

    Race 7

3-San Domino A (6-1)-This veteran steps up to a new challenge but the Harris trainee has been good at the Preferred class. Should be forwardly placed and might be overlooked at the windows.
6-Dragon Said (4-1)-Versatile 4-year-old can win on the engine or coming off cover. This guy was in the NW2500 at Freehold, then joined the Jenn B barn in February and won 9 straight before finishing 2nd in last. Best to not overlook here as last week's trip wasn't smooth.

    Race 8

3-Revelry (3-1)-Was claimed for $40k back on 5-24 and won its next start versus $50k claimers. This is the 1st time back down to the claiming price. Draws well and looking for an aggressive steer.
4-Tony Too Tall (9-1)-In the 2 recent starts at this class there have been some issues. Was parked the mile from the 8 hole last time. The time before, was off 2 weeks between starts and rolled well in the 2nd half but the pace was dull. Taking a swing at a nice price that this time things will click.

    Race 9

3-Brabados (3-1)-Keeps winning while climbing up the class ladder and beat this kind rather easily last week. Don't know when the winning streak will end but there is a good chance it won't be tonight.
4-Uptown Funk (4-1)-Had no shot from the 8 hole versus Preferred company in last and now drops in for a tag. Did beat the $50k claimers on 6/21 from this same post and should be a player.

    0.50 Pick 5

    1,4,5/2,6/3,6/3,4/3,4
    Total Bet=$24

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Parx Racing - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#1 My Cousin Rich He's bred to enjoy the added ground and brings the best sprint form of the bunch. He might land a perfect, tactical trip today while moving around two turns.
#5 Imagine This He's back up in class after a useful run with cheaper last time out, and he won't have to bring a massive effort to land a piece of this.
#3 Go Lime His only local two-turn try was pretty solid in the career debut, so the hope is that he'll get back to something like that here. I'd want something close to the 10/1 ML price to go looking for a form reversal.
Race Summary My Cousin Rich probably won't be a big price here, but he does have some solid form and figures to get a perfect trip from the inside draw.
    Parx Racing - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#5 Iywaan His form can be hit or miss, and he was no match for the chalk in here a few starts back, but he might get the right kind of run from off the pace today.
#7 Sheer Flattery Tactical speed is likely to get another perfect, first-over trip, and he has been a real handful with this type of company locally in recent starts.
#3 They Shot Sonny His best game keeps him in the mix with these, but the price may not accurately reflect his chances of winning here.
Race Summary Iywaan might offer a playable mid-range price in a race where the other listed pair may dominate the wagering action. Let's see if he can run right back to the last one.
    Parx Racing - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#3 Sweet Willemina She has done nothing wrong in two local starts and should get another great pressing trip with these. Not sure she's offering anything near the 5/2 ML price, but she's appealing if she does.
#5 Tonal Vision She can be hit or miss, but she took to the local footing nicely last time out and is a danger right back with anything similar.
#6 Lulu's Roadrunner She really seemed to appreciate moving back around two turns last time out, and she's an interesting price player underneath with something similar.
Race Summary Sweet Willemina has turned in two easy wins over the local track, and there's little reason to think she'll have trouble bringing another sharp effort right back today.

    Indiana Grand - Race #2
    Picks Notes
#5 Prepare for Glory Improved in his last one and is braced for his third of the year; won a couple last year and is rounding into good form.
#2 Cap de Fuego Has good speed and has been on the board in five of his last six; goes with blinkers off today, which could make a difference for him. He's looked good going into races on several occasions but hasn't won in two years.
#6 Danang Was a romping winner in two of his last three and gets up against stronger company; good form could pave the way for another top effort.
Race Summary Prepare for Glory progressed nicely for fourth last time after a poor effort in his first of the year and looks ready to bring some late heat against these.
    Indiana Grand - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#4 First Deputy Was a winner at Keeneland in April and has a win and a second at Belterra; has been very sharp on occasion and is well spotted here.
#3 Rolin With Olin Has been in involved in photo finishes in his last three and finally got the candy last time out; has good speed and is game.
#2 Insofar Was an easy winner at Belterra last out and has been game in sprints; could be a good price.
Race Summary First Deputy has performed well in good races and can get the nod under legendary regional jockey Perry Ouzts.
    Indiana Grand - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#1 Big Band Luzziann Ran a good second two back and then tired after setting the pace in a stakes race at Arlington; has the class to be in the mix from the beginning and can dig in at this level.
#7 Choctaw Bingo Has won four straight races and the surface doesn't matter at all; big player throughout.
#8 Lightning Lou Was fifth at Belmont in her first U.S. start after running in Great Britain; likely to make a decent late run.
Race Summary Big Band Luzziann has been in good races and can benefit from the inside trip; well spotted and can dig in here.

    Race 6 - SO - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $19000 Class Rating: 82

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE STARTED FOR A CLAIMING PRICE OF $5,000 OR LESS IN THE LAST FIVE STARTS OR CLAIMING PRICE $5,000. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JULY 2, 2021 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000 (RACES WHERE ENTERED FOR $5,000 OR LESS NOT CONSIDERED IN ESTIMATING

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 1 ALWAYS TALKING 7/2
    # 8 UNO TIGRESS 4/1
    # 6 BLUE SKY VENEZUELA 5/2

ALWAYS TALKING is my choice. I like the rider on this filly - strong chance to win the race. Has respectable early lick and will probably fare well against this field. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the best class figures of this group of animals. UNO TIGRESS - Bennett has this filly moving well and is a solid selection based on the decent speed figures put up in sprint races lately. Could beat this group given the 78 speed figure garnered in her last outing. BLUE SKY VENEZUELA - This racer has a wonderful win percentage in dirt sprints. Has been consistently running well lately.

    Colonial Downs - Race #9 - Post: 5:29pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 73

    Rating:

    #10 PAU HANA (ML=6/1)
    #9 PEPPER POT (ML=3/1)

PAU HANA - In this race here, this thoroughbred has clearly shown signs that she likes the turf. Her speed ratings are the highest in the field for this dist-surf. As long as Perez keeps this steed off the pace, I have to believe this one could be a winner. Don't throw this horse out due to her last contest at Pimlico where she ended up sixth on the soft turf. Should improve this time around. The mount with the top average Equibase class figure in turf events is usually a solid play. This pony fits the bill. PEPPER POT - Earnings per start is something that I think can be an extremely key handicapping factor. This racer is ranked number 1 in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #12 YOU NEVER CALL (ML=5/1), #3 ZELIENOPLE (ML=8/1), #5 REYNA DE VERANO (ML=8/1),

YOU NEVER CALL - Don't believe this steed is worth 5/1 in this affair. ZELIENOPLE - Difficult to bet on any horse to turn things around if there is no large gain to taking the chance. REYNA DE VERANO - Garnered a mediocre speed figure last time out in a $25,000 Maiden Claiming race on July 21st. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that rating.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #10 PAU HANA to win at post-time odds of 7/5 or better

Race 6 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $36000 Class Rating: 60

FOR REGISTERED INDIANA BREDS MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 4 PRINCE ACT 5/2
    # 5 KING SOCIAL 9/2
    # 2 MACHO ALEGRE 9/2

PRINCE ACT is my choice. He has been running quite well lately while recording strong speed figures. Ran a strong last race. It's a good sign that Hammond is using Bermudez on this entrant. KING SOCIAL - His 58 average has this gelding with among the most respectable speed figures for this event. As of late Achard has been scorching which may give the edge to this gelding. MACHO ALEGRE - Looks competitive against this group of horses in this race and will most likely be one of the leaders. Very good jock and handler combo winning 17 percent of their races working together.

    Mountaineer Park - Race #8 - Post: 9:55pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,900 Class Rating: 70

    Rating:

    #9 TACTICAL QUALITY (ML=3/1)
    #4 WE WILL SHINE (ML=8/1)

TACTICAL QUALITY - Was in a $5,000 Claiming race at Thistledown in the last race. That race had an Equibase class figure of 80 and he is moving down in this event. A certain contender. WE WILL SHINE - The Jul 25th contest at Mountaineer Park was at a class level of (79). Dropping down the class ladder significantly, so he should be in a good position to win.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 CLICKJAB (ML=9/5), #1 MERCY RULE (ML=4/1), #5 BURKIE (ML=8/1),

CLICKJAB - This morning-line choice may be out of shape without any recent works. Awfully difficult to play this mount when he hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness of late. MERCY RULE - This animal likes to be on the board, but doesn't usually get the job done. Don't play in the top spot. BURKIE - Finished third in his most recent race with a mediocre speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this group.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #9 TACTICAL QUALITY on the win end if we get at least 3/2 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,9]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Toronto Blue Jays -1.5 (-140)
The Toronto Blue Jays are 4-0 in their last four games overall. They have won all four games by two runs or more and have outscored the opposition 28-6. They should put it on the Cleveland Indians and Eli Morgan tonight. Morgan is 1-3 with a 7.47 ERA in seven starts this season. Robbie Ray has been one of the best starters in the game at 9-5 with a 3.04 ERA in 20 starts with 150 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings. Give me the Blue Jays on the Run Line.

MLB | Indians vs Blue Jays
Play on: Blue Jays -1½ -137 at pinnacle

FREE PICK - Toronto Blue Jays -1.5 (-137)
    RATING: 30*
    ROT#: 960
I'll lay the -137 on the -1.5 run line with the Blue Jays in Monday's home game against the Indians. Toronto returned home to the Rogers Centre on Friday after nearly a two year hiatus and they responded by sweeping the Royals in a 3-game series. All 3 wins came by at least 2 runs (Toronto has won 4 straight by 2 or more).
All signs point to another easy win for the Blue Jays in the series opener against the Indians. Toronto should have no problem scoring, as the Indians will turn to Eli Morgan for his 8th start. Morgan has struggled, posting a 7.47 ERA in his first 7 starts. He's served up 5 homers in his last 15 innings of work.
Toronto will have Robbie Ray on the mound, who is having a great 2021 season. Ray is 9-5 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.073 WHIP in 20 starts. Last time out he held the Red Sox to just 1 run in 6 innings. He's got a 2.55 ERA over his last 3 outings. Give me the Blue Jays -1.5 (-137)!

    MLB | Orioles vs Yankees
Play on: Yankees -1½ -120 at pinnacle

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach MLB Rotation #962 Monday Free Pick New York Yankees Run Line -1.5 runs -120 vs Baltimore Orioles @ 7:05 ET - Andrew Heaney makes his Yankees debut and he is off back to back strong outings with the Angels. It has been quite some time since he has faced the Orioles so, unsurprisingly, their lineup has very little experience against and the couple guys who do are hitless. This is an edge for Heaney and note that Baltimore is one of the worst teams in baseball. The Yankees are on a 30-9 run against the Orioles including 13-3 in home games. Also, the Orioles are sending a struggling Jorge Lopez to the mound. He is 2-12 this season and has a 6.51 ERA in road games. Lopez enters this start with a 7.94 ERA last 3 starts and also is 1-3 with a 7.22 ERA in his 6 career starts against the Yankees. He'll be facing a number of hitters whom have enjoyed success against him so this one is a mismatch all the way around. Of course that is why New York is such a pricey home favorite on the money line but we get good value in the -120 range by laying the 1.5 runs. 52 of the Orioles 67 losses have been by 2+ runs and 39 of the Yankees 56 wins this season have been by 2+ runs. Free Pick NEW YORK YANKEES Run Line -1.5 runs -120

Jack's Free Pick Monday: Seattle Mariners +170
There is a lot of value with the Seattle Mariners as +170 road underdogs to the Tampa Bay Rays tonight. I think this is a letdown spot for the Rays, who are coming off a sweep of the Boston Red Sox after winning on Sunday Night Baseball last night.
It's a good 'buy low' spot on the Mariners after losing two out of three to the Rangers last series by one run each. I like the underrated Chris Flexen, who is 9-5 with a 3.81 ERA and 1.251 WHIP in 19 starts this season for the Mariners.
Michael Wacha is getting way too much respect from oddsmakers tonight. He is 2-2 with a 3.63 ERA in 13 starts this season. Wacha has never beaten the Mariners, going 0-2 with an 8.25 ERA and 2.333 WHIP in three career starts against them. He allowed 5 earned runs and 12 base runners in 3 2/3 innings of a 5-1 loss to Seattle on June 18th in his lone start against them this season.
Flexen is 9-2 (+8.3 Units) against an AL team with an OBP of .320 or worst this season. Flexen is 11-2 (+11.4 Units) with a total of 8.5 to 10 this season. Seattle is 21-8 in the last 29 meetings, including 14-5 in the last 19 meetings in Tampa Bay. Bet the Mariners Monday.

    MLB | Mariners vs Rays
Play on: Mariners +1½ -102 at pinnacle

My free play is on the Sea Mariners (plus-1.5 runs) at 7:10 ET.

The Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 3-2 win on Sunday night, as they flipped a 1 1/2-game deficit in the AL East to a 1 1/2-game lead. The Rays are now 64-42, tied with the Astros for the AL's best record as they welcome the Seattle Mariners to Tropicana Field for a three-game series having won NINE of their last 12. The Mariners come to Tampa off back-to-back one run losses at Texas (Sat & Sun), having dropped FOUR of their last five overall. 56-50 Seattle is in third-place in the AL West (EIGHT games behind Houston), as well as 3 1/2-games behind Oakland, which currently holds down the AL's second wild card spot.

The starting pitching matchup for the series opener is Seattle's Chris Flexen (9-5, 3.81 ERA) and Tampa Bay's Michael Wacha (2-2, 4.79 ERA). Flexen spent his first three years (2017-19) with the Mets, going 3-11 with an 8.07 ERA in 27 appearances (11 starts). Flexen then signed a one-year contract with KBO's Doosan Bears and pitched to a 3.01 ERA with 10.2 K/9 for the Bears in 2020. However, he signed a two-year, $4.75M contract with the Seattle Mariners on December 9, 2020. He's been in Seattle's starting rotation all season and has made 19 starts. He's 9-5 with a 3.81 ERA and the Mariners are 13-6 in his starts. His moneyline mark of plus-$908 ranks third-best among ALL starters in 2021.

Wacha made a HUGE impression back in 2013 for St Louis (late regular season and postseason) and then went 17-7 with a 3.38 ERA in 2015. However, he went a modest 33-25 (4.39 ERA) over the next four years. Wacha signed a one-year contract for the 2020 season on December 13, 2019 with the Mets and in eight appearances (seven starts), was 1-4 with 6.62 ERA over just 34 innings. He then signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on Dec 16, 2020. He's made 18 appearances this season (13 starts), posting a 2-2 record with a 4.79 ERA. However, the Rays have gone 9-4 in his starts.

The Rays figure to be playing the 2021 postseason but the Mariners are likely a longshot to do so. However, Seattle's moneyline record of plus-$2188 is $825 better than Tampa Bay's, as the Mariners trail only the Giants (+$2,276) by $88 in that department, despite San Francisco owning MLB's best overall record at 66-39, 10 1/2-games better than Seattle's. Tampa Bay could be in for a bit of a "letdown" off the sweep of Boston and I'm a fan of Flexen. I'll take "the price" with Seattle and also note that in three career starts vs Seattle, Wacha owns an 8.25 ERA and 2.33 WHIP, including a June 18th game vs Seattle this season in which he allowed 11 hits and five ERs in just 3.2 innings.

    Good luck...Larry
