Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Sunday, January 8

Posted on January 7, 2023 by David Aragona
RACE 2: OPEN TIL MIDNIGHT (#5)
There is very little speed signed on in this $25k conditioned claimer, and I have trouble building a case for the likely early leader Moonshiningbright (#3), who has never raced beyond 6 1/2 furlongs. All of the horses with decent form routing on the dirt are deep closers. Hang Tight (#1) could go favored as he makes his first start off the claim for Rob Falcone, but he’s been claimed away from some pretty sharp trainers in Linda Rice and Rob Atras. He also has done his best work as a closing sprinter recently, so I’m skeptical he can get this 9-furlong trip. Stamina isn’t a concern for Mailman’s a Flyer (#4) or Strong Light (#6), who have both run well around two turns before. Yet the former is coming off a second-place finish against weaker last time in a race that may not be quite as strong as the speed figure indicates. Strong Light looks a little more reliable, but he’s just a bit of a plodder who has to rely on others to come back to him. The only viable alternative that I can find is Open Til Midnight (#5). This gelding has some questions to answer, as he’s never raced beyond 6 furlongs on dirt. Yet he did achieve his only victory routing on turf as a 2-year-old, and he has always given me the impression that he’s a horse who does better with added ground. He had issues that kept him away from the races for the better part of 2022, and he was just placed over his head in his two starts since the layoff. This is the first time since his return that he’s running in an appropriate spot, and it appears that he possesses the tactical speed to get a good trip stalking Moonshiningbright.
    RACE 5: IMPROPER (#6)
I expect that American Law (#2) and Vodka Mardini (#5) will vie for favoritism in this race, and they both are obvious contenders. The former hasn’t exactly showed much interest in winning, collecting 6 runner-up finishes in his 10 career starts. Yet he’s continued to earn competitive speed figures, and comes off a career-best 109 TimeformUS Speed Figure in his last start. I’m just a little concerned that he may not appreciate the turnback to 7 furlongs in a field that features other speed. I do like the cutback for Vodka Mardini, who goes out of a hot barn. However, he didn’t run quite as well as I might have expected last time when he was taken off the pace, and he will likely have to rate again in this spot. I’m more interested in a couple of runners who should be better prices. Pricing Power (#3) only attracted lukewarm support when he made his debut at Keeneland, and he faded late after setting the pace along the rail. Yet there’s some evidence that the inside was not the place to be that day, so perhaps the track worked against him. He has had some time off since then and now returns in a slightly softer spot. Chad Brown is 17 for 45 (38%, $2.25 ROI) with 3-year-old and older second time starters in maiden dirt sprints over the past 5 years. My top pick is Improper (#6), who may be the best price of all. He faced a weaker field for this level when he was checked in third last time. Yet that was his first start in 8 months, and he just seemed to get a little tired after flashing speed. The slight stretch-out in distance shouldn’t bother him and he did show some hints of ability when facing some decent horses early last year. He needs to move forward, but John Terranova is 10 for 28 (36%, $3.08 ROI) second off a layoff of 180 days or more over the past 5 years, and he’s 7 for 16 (44%, $4.11 ROI) on dirt in that sample.
    RACE 8: MARKET ALERT (#5)
Wudda U Think Now (#4) could prove difficult to catch as the likely controlling speed in this Say Florida Sandy. He appeared to get back into top form last time when he got assigned a 123 TimeformUS Speed Figure for his Alex M. Robb victory. Yet that was a tough day to make speed figures, and it remains to be seen if he can run back to a number like that. He did set a legitimately fast pace and just kept going in a race dominated by speed types. He handles the distance and seems like a deserving favorite. My Boy Tate (#1) defeated him in the Hudson two back, but this 9-year-old has lacked consistency over the past year. He appeared to be off form in the summer, but he came around to win that Hudson with a powerful stretch drive. However, it’s hard to find an excuse for his loss as the favorite last time and he’s unlikely to get a favorable pace setup here. Bankit (#3) defeated him that day when getting an unusually aggressive ride from Jose Lezcano. Similar tactics could make him dangerous here, but he probably needs to run a faster speed figure than he’s earned in his last couple of starts. My top pick at a bigger price is Market Alert (#5). He’s also a little light on speed figures compared to some others in this field, but he has taken subtle steps since the claim by Rob Atras. He was game to try to battle on between horses two back when facing a pair of allowance rivals in solid form. Then last time he was always out of position in the mud after an awkward first furlong. Yet he never stopped trying, passing some tired rivals through the lane in a speed-dominated race. I don’t mind the slight turnback in distance for him, and he’s outrun his odds in some tough spots before. I don’t think we’ve yet seen the best he has to offer for Atras, and he’s getting a rider upgrade to Kendrick Carmouche.

COMMENTS: JUSTIQUE won two of her three starts and they were not close. ICE DANCING went wire to wire to get the maiden score with the top last race speed figure. PARODY has some nice workouts getting ready for her first start since mid November. HUNTINGCOCO needs to run back to her debut to pop at a decent price.

COMMENTS: NATIONAL TREASURE ran the highest last race speed number in the Breeders Cup and drops in class here today with a barrage of bullet works. SPUN INTENDED has two strong races to start his career and two bullet works between races. REINCARNATE is within 2 lengths and neck from being undefeated in four races. SPEED BOAT BEACH won three of four races and is another that is working out lightning fast for today.

    Aqueduct Hotlist - January 8

    Jan. 07, 2023

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
    Hot List Key:
    A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
    * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
3rd race [NY, Md 25000, 7F] – (3) Silver Samurai returns from almost a year layoff when he had a pair on third-place finishes after setting the pace at Aqueduct. If he comes back in form, he is expected to get loose on the lead against a field that he should beat. (5) Our Son Jake will make his third start following a layoff and improved in most recent start. (6) Tyrannosaurus Rex was last seen racing at Saratoga and changes barns to Jeffrey Englehart who wins with 26% of his new horses. (1) Makart has been competitive at this level in his recent starts.
4th race [Clm 40000, 6F] – (2) Customerexperience was claimed two races back for $40,000 and then came back to win a starter allowance impressively for the new trainer John Toscano. (3) Hydra won a starter allowance at Laurel last time but has excellent past form at Aqueduct. (5) Baba used her speed to run second at this claiming level last time and she has a great record at the Big A – 12: 3-2-1. (6) Blue Paynt finished in the top three in 10 out of her last 12 starts including her last two which came after a layoff.
5th race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (2) American Law returned from a seven month layoff and was beaten by just a head for the win while earning his career best speed figure. (4) Norgay was second by a neck in his first start for David Jacobson (3) Pricing Power flashed speed in his debut at Keeneland in October for Chad Brown and is projected to get loose on the lead in here. (1) Magical Ways gets blinkers on for his third start and will need to make a step forward for the Bill Mott barn.
7th race [NY, Alw 72000 N1X, 6F] – (7) Safalow’s Mission (A) had to check at the break in what was his first start following a six-month layoff. He was last and then rallied to finish second for Linda Rice whose barn is having an excellent Aqueduct meeting. (6) Daufuskie Island runs well fresh and trainer Charlie Baker has a 30% win rate with horses that get time off between starts. (4) Warrior’s Revenge changed to the barn of Mark Hennig and ran third after frequently winning at Finger Lakes. (3) Dee Bo was claimed from a win at Aqueduct against open company and now gets a fast pace to set up a stalking trip.
Best bets: Silver Samurai (3rd); American Law (5th). Best value: Customerexperience (4th); Safalow’s Mission (7th)

    * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (5) Soviet Excess makes her career debut for Pletcher and seems ready for a big effort. (8) Olympic Artist is another first-time starter who should be considered. (4) Strictly Taboo makes her debut and can be a threat here. (2) Calling All Angels merits attention in her U.S. debut. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-8.
3rd race – (1) Carolina Traffic (A) set the pace and hung on for second last time out in an improved performance. Should handle this field from the rail. (4) Hard to Fathom could perk up while switching to dirt. (7) Hello Jack could be a factor off the Walder claim. (2) Barak runs for a lesser claiming tag and can be a contender. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-7.
5th race – (2) Elysian Field closed fast to finish second in her debut and should turn in a big effort for new connections. (5) Way too Early seems well-suited for a career on turf. (1) Sassiness merits consideration in her debut. (7) Worst Behaviour can use her speed to make her presence felt. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-7.
8th race – (11) Moral Turpitude (B) had some trouble in her turf debut and should turn in a better try with Lasix. (2) Laurana appears ready for a big effort in her debut. (9) Por Una Cabeza could respond with a better effort on turf. (4) Mo Town Madison is worth a look while moving from Tapeta to turf. Betting strategy: 11 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-9-11. Doubles: 2-4-9-11 with 2-3-6-8.
9th race – (6) Rudder’s Men won his debut impressively and should be able to make it two in a row. (8) Talk of the Nation also captured his debut and should be the one to fear. (2) Litigate is another debut winner who cannot be overlooked. (3) Cyclone Mischief tired in a stakes but should appreciate the shorter distance here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-8.

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (January 8)

Sunday sees cards at both Seoul (11 races from 10:40 to 18:00) and at Busan (6 races from 11:05 to 15:40).Here are the previews:

    Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens in the opener with five of the twelve racing for the first time. Having won a trail, (1) CHOEGANG HYEONMA was sent off as favourite over this distance on debut back in October but having drawn the widest gate, he never really found a run and ultimately finished in 5th. Nevertheless, there was nothing particularly wrong with the run and from a much better draw, he won’t need to improve much to win this. The others with experience haven’t offered much so it’s to the first timers that we look for danger. (2) FEDERAL PRESS ran on strongly for cross the line 2nd in his heat having emerged from gate eleven. The he finished off suggests 1200M can suit first up and he draws well. (10) FIRST USER clocked the fastest time of the debut-makers and that brings him into contention. (12) GLOBAL JINGYEOK actually won his heat, albeit in a slow time and he too warrants consideration. Returning to experience, (8) THE ROCK SUNSHINE looks the most likely to improve.
Selections (1) Choegang Hyeonma (2) Federal Press (10) First User (12) Global Jingyeok
    Next Best 8, 7
    Fast Start 1, 4, 7, 10

    Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens with four of the twelve racing for the first time. There are three standouts, and they all have experience. Without a huge amount of confidence, we’ll side with (4) JEONGMUN SPECTER. His one run to date was back in August when he led over 1000M, ultimately finishing 4th in a fair time. He was given an easy time in a December trial, and he draws well here. He can win first-up. (8) MIRACLE ONE looks to be the danger. He finished 4th on debut over 1000M on November 11th running on well. The additional furlong can suit, and he has every chance. (12) SUCCESS MOCCA dead-heated for 3rd on his debut at 1000M on November 4th when handy throughout. He draws wide but with a touch of luck at the start to find a position, he is in this. Of the first-time starters, (3) HANEUL BULPAE and (7) GOOD MAGIC look the most probable to make an immediate impact.
Selections (4) Jeongmun Specter (8) Miracle One (12) Success Mocca (3) Haneul Bulpae
    Next Best 7, 11
    Fast Start 3, 4, 5, 7

    Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

More maiden three-year-olds. (2) KKUMUI SUNGAN shapes as the one to beat based on a quick debut on November 6th over 1000M when settling midfield and running on. With some natural improvement here, has every chance. (4) GEUMSEONG SIDAE ran 4th behind Kkumui Sungan in November and then went even faster when finishing 2nd over the five furlongs at start number three on December 4th. He has handy throughout and it’s not impossible that he could overturn the form today. (1) NAOL SIDAE was perhaps not ready and suffered an injury when debuting last July. He was put away after that but reappeared in a trial at the start of December looking sharp and fast. He draws well on the inside and can be on the pace and in this a long way. (9) ARGO GONGJU and (7) WONDERFUL TIZZY among others in the hunt in a competitive race.
Selections (2) Kkumui Sungan (4) Geumseong Sidae (1) Naol Sidae (9) Argo Gongju
    Next Best 7, 12
    Fast Start 1, 2, 4, 9

    Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Maiden fillies and mares. (4) MYEONGSEONG CHARGE will be the favourite, and a short one at that. This will be her eighth start and she has managed six top-five finishes. She comes in off a 3rd place over this distance on November 25th having led for most of the way and finished in a fast time. She should have too much. (7) STORM AGAIN also has six top-fives in her record, in her case from eight prior starts. She comes up in trip having run on strongly for 3rd last time out and while she comes up in weight too, she can offer a stern test. (6) GOLDEN RACER and (10) TWOTWO FLYING came home 2nd and 3rd respectively when they raced each over at 1200M on December 9th. Both should be in at least the placing fame today. (12) DUBAI PYEONGJEONG another in the hunt.
Selections (4) Myeongseong Charge (7) Storm Again (6) Golden Racer (10) Twotwo Flying
    Next Best 12, 5
    Fast Start 5, 8, 9, 10

    Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Fillies and mares only for this maiden. (1) GOLDEN LUCKY has steadily improved across four starts so far, culminating in a 2nd place over 1200M on December 4th when she was handy throughout. She stays at almost the same weight, draws inside and the additional half furlong can see her home on top. (12) CUPID CHAMP is the main danger. She has finished 2nd and 5th in two outings to date, both at 1000M and both in fast times. She comes up in trip by a furlong and a half but that shouldn’t be a problem with the only downside being the wide draw. If she can find a good position, she can win. There is a solitary debut-maker. (4) HANGAWI SEONMUL went through two trials in December improving in the second of them. This is a great race to start off in and from a good draw and some natural improvement out of the trials, a bold showing could be in store. (9) BLUE KAISER and (2) WIDAEHAN HANMA are others in the placing frame.

    Busan Race 3: Class 5 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Tricky race. (6) PISTOL STAR got a long way back after a troubled start in the Breeders’ Cup champion juvenile race on December 4th and although he made good late ground, he ran out of track and finished in 8th place. He has raced over 1800M so he won’t be surprised by anything here and it wasn’t a hugely strong field, he may win. (9) ADELE ALLIE’S also remains a maiden but there are grounds to be optimistic on his first try around two turns. He comes in having run 2nd and 3rd in his latest two over 1300M, finishing off well and it may just suit. (4) NEW CROWN got his solitary win at class and distance three starts back in October, beating a couple of today’s rivals. The time was slow, but he has gone faster and warrants respect here. (10) MONEY CASE and (5) O.K. THUNDER among others in the hunt.

    Seoul Race 4: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

    (3) BAEKDU BOY is clear favourite to breakthrough here. He had been posting good times at 1000M and then stepped up to this distance on November 19th and ran 2nd, well beaten by a good winner but stopping the clock faster than any of the others here who have tackled 1200M. He draws well to be on pace or handy and may take some beating. (4) GOOD SIMON hinted at some ability at start number three, when running on for 4th. She comes up in trip for the first time and the way she has finished off her races suggests it is about time. (1) EXPECT ran fairly from a wide gate over this distance on debut in November. The draw is better here and with some natural improvement for that experience, he can be expected to get closer. (5) FOUR ACE and (11) WHITE WITCH others in the minor money frame.

    (9) LANE KILLER returned from eight months out on December 18th and ran a creditable 6th of eleven at class and distance. He has won over 1800M before and should strip fitter for that performance. He can return to winning ways here. (10) WONDERFUL WORLD comes in following a smart win at this class distance on December 11th when settling back and running on, leaving a couple of today’s rivals back down the track. He joins Lane Killer at tope weights and could prove the main danger. (12) WIND WINNER came up in class after a 3rd and a 2nd at 1800M in September and October. He showed he can fit in at this level with 4th over a mile at his latest outing and despite the wide draw, he can go close here. (7) LIGHT STORY and (5) GREAT DANCE among others who can be competitive.

    (9) RAON THE QUALITY finally showed a bit of it when getting her maiden win at start number four with a blitzing win in a fast time over 1200M on December 3rd. She comes up in class here but that shouldn’t be an issue and the “full” sister to Group race winning filly Raon The Spurt can win again today. She is though just one of four who are up in class following last start wins. (10) SECRET PLAY also made his breakthrough at start four over this distance and comes up in class. He settled right back and then ran on so the wide draw shouldn’t be a hindrance and he can go well in this company. The draw may not be quite so ideal for (11) GLOBAL KANGTA. His maiden arrived at start five and he was on pace throughout. He has run on well from behind though so a place shouldn’t be beyond him. (8) BIG SMART completes the up in class quartet in the top four with (7) GO GO STAR possibly the best of those who already have class 5 experience.

    (6) CHOICE RUN had a torrid time from gate sixteen in the Breeders’ Cup Champion Juvenile race over 1400M on December 4th. Draw a line through that and instead go on his previous effort, a 4th place finish in the Listed Gimhae Mayor’s Trophy in November and on pace win at class 5. From a much kinder draw and in more amenable company, he should go much better today. The logical main danger is (2) RAP VERSA. A smart all the way winner over this distance at class 5 level in October, he worked hard to get to the front from a wide draw on his first try at this class on November 18th. He finished a creditable 5th and could get an easier run from a better gate today. This looks a more suitable assignment for (1) FLYING REGAL than his most recent task, which was a shy at the stumps in a valuable Trophy race over a mile. He has a light weight, a good draw, and a fair chance. (9) JATNAMUGIL and (12) HALLA NURI are also capable of competing for the money on their day.

Having made all in a November trial, (3) HIDDEN BRAIN did precisely the same on her debut over 1300M on December 11th, winning well in a good time. She comes up in class here but at the same distance and under even less weight from a good gate, she will be backed strongly to repeat. (6) NEMO PRINCE was a good class and distance 3rd on December 10th when handy and running on. He is up a little in the weights but could offer some value at a potential each-way price. (8) MORNING PEARL is yet to win but is a consistent type with eight top-four finishes from ten starts. She likes to settle back and run on and while she may find one or two too quick again, she should there or thereabouts. (12) LAROMANEE was a touch disappointing at her last start at class and distance but on previous form is worth another chance. She has the fastest time of any of these for the distance. (9) GEUMA ALLURE another in the hunt.

    (8) MILLION BANK comes up in class having won both starts since returning from a six-month absence. His latest was at this distance on November 27th when he sat handy and ran on strongly in a fast time. He is very nicely weighted and while this is a sterner examination, he may well come through it. Eight of these raced one another over 1200M at this class on December 4th. (6) OREUDA was favourite that day, but he was slowly away and from then on, was always playing catch-up, ultimately finishing 3rd. Faith is kept with the apprentice jockey who rode him that day meaning the weight is low, he has won at the distance before, and he may well start as the favourite. (3) ACE KILLER came home in 2nd place in that race having settled midfield and run on. That day as now, he was racing out of class but don’t rule out a repeat. (5) GREAT BOSS carries his fair share of weight but has plenty of ability and can be in the hunt. (10) SKY MORE drops back in trip but is in form and can’t be ruled out.

A competitive race. We’ll go with (1) WONPYEONG KILLAR, who is yet to break through and is up in the weights under today’s conditions. He does though come up in trip, something that he may well have been looking for and from a good gate, he may be able to dictate. (9) K N TIZWON also comes in winless but with perhaps his best chance to date. Since coming up to 1700M he has put in three very solid performance, including a 2nd place last time when coming right from the back of the field. The concern is if he leaves himself too much to do again, but a win doesn’t seem far off. (4) GOLD SPIKE has plenty of experience but comes up to this trip for the first time. She finished off very well for 3rd over 1400M last time out and could be ready for a crack at two-turns. (11) CHEONSONGI and (12) NAEGILUI BYEOL among others in at least the placing frame.

    (12) CHOEGO BLACK was sent off as favourite on December 4th over 1600M but came up short to the tune of five-lengths behind a 60/1 outsider. Those mile races can be tricky though and coming up to two turns proper here, despite carrying an additional 3kg and drawing the widest gate, this is not a strong set of rivals, and he is the one to beat. (10) NUBI GANGJA has won at this distance and enters in fair form following a 3rd place at class and distance in November and can be considered a place chance. (2) SUPER ECTON was 4th behind Choego Black in that December 4th race and from a good draw, can sit off the speed and challenge late here. (4) THANK YOU DAECHEON and (9) SISEONJIPJUNG are others who can aim for places but it’s hard to see them beating the favourite.

    (6) GLOBAL YEONGUNG enters off a solid class and distance 2nd place on November 26th when settling midfield and finishing strongly albeit four-lengths behind good winner Double Edge. He comes in here under the same weight and a similar showing will put him right in the finish again. (2) ROYAL ROAD returned to winning ways over 1200M at this class at the end of November. He can run at this distance too as evidence by his 2nd place two starts back when going right back and running on. He does come up 5kg in the weights from his last start but shouldn’t be ruled out. (1) COOL PRINCESS is the probable pacesetter. She was 6th in her first try at this class on December 4th but the margins were not big and the time was good. From the inside gate she may get an easier early run here. That can allow her to overturn the form on (11) HAEDEULMOE. He was 5th in that December race, which followed a 2nd place at the start prior. The wide draw shouldn’t be an issue as he can settle midfield and finish strongly. The up in class (5) WONDERFUL DEVIL potentially another in the frame.

    (4) SOUL MERIT returned to winning ways in fine style at class and distance on November 20th sitting handy until the home straight and them romping home for an easy win. The lightly raced six-year-old has been a consistent high performer and under today’s handicap conditions he should haver too much for this lot at what is essentially level or better weights. Those conditions also suit (1) THE GUMPU, whose latest two outings don’t reflect his ability. He goes best when on pace and the inside draw gives him an excellent opportunity to return to form. (3) HEUNGROK DAEBU comes up in class but down in weight after a strong 2nd place at this distance on November 27th. He can measure up at this level. (11) GANGTOMA and his big rating is why the others, including Soul Merit, get to carry a light weight. He has a strong finish on him and while he is at a disadvantage, don’t rule him completely out of the money. (7) MIGHTY WHO is another in the placing frame.

    (3) GLOBAL BOBAE won three races in a row at this distance between July and October, the last of which was at this class. He stepped up to 1400M for his most recent outing in November and after starting slowly and settling back, ran home in 5th. He carries plenty of weight here but comes down in trip, draws well, and can return to winning ways. (10) HIGH RUNNER came home in 4th place in her first try at this class on December 3rd. She is another who may appreciate the drop in trip, and she comes in under a light weight. (2) EUNSEONG MARU was 2nd to Global Bobae at class and distance in October. She mixes her form but she has the fastest time of any of these for the distance and shouldn’t be ruled out here. (1) MJ POINT and (9) ANYANG HORANGI others in the placing hunt.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 12:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Thirsty Pappy
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Thirsty Pappy produced a significant forward move (as expected) after being transferred from the Walther Solis barn to trainer Peter Miller, and while no match for easy winner Devil Among Us in a fast, highly rated sprint at Los Alamitos, he wound up more than three lengths clear of the others in an effort that should have him primed and ready another forward move in his first try on turf and his first around two turns. The sophomore gelding seems certain to be the controlling speed from his favorable rail draw, and with the addition of Lasix the son of Stay Thirsty has much in his favor. At 5/2 on the morning line, he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

    RACE 2: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Parco
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Parco hardly is a world beater but may look like one in this bottom-rung maiden claiming main track miler for older fillies and mares. In a race that offers no viable alternative, the daughter of Super Saver projects to be a shorter price than her 5/2 morning line following in the money finishers in each of her last three starts, most recently pressing a hot pace before weakening late in a race that was much stronger than the one she’s in today. She’s a play at anywhere near her morning line of 5/2 but we suspect she’ll go lower.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 3: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Forgiving Spirit; 1-Beaudacious
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Forgiving Spirit stretches out for the first time in this first-level state-bred allowance turf miler and his pedigree suggests he’ll be better routing than sprinting. The 4-year-old gelding is a two-time winner over the Santa Anita turf course around one corner, and after finishing off the board with trouble last month at Del Mar the Peter Miller-trained runner should step forward in a big way against this group at this trip. Flavian Prat stays aboard and should have this son of Shaman’s Ghost within striking range throughout. Beaudacious does his best work on the front end and seems certain to attempt gate-to-sire tactics from his favorable inside draw, though Little Nas may have something to say about that. He should be fitter and sharper in this, his second start off a long layoff, and after shaking the rust off in a quick five turf tightener at Del Mar last month the Ryan Hanson-trained veteran may be able to take this field on the front end for quite aways if he’s not pressured early.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 4: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Clooney
    Backups/Savers:

Forecast: 3-Clooney plummets from the straight maiden ranks to this maiden $40,000 claimer in just his third career start after bringing $760,000 as a yearling at Keeneland, so his connections are clearly culling him from the stable. However, at this level, the recently-gelded son of City of Light appears to have found his friends after chasing home infinitely tougher foes in his first two races. With the switch to Flavian Prat, the Tim Yakteen-trained sophomore is listed at 8/5 on the morning line and looks that price by default. In a race that probably should be left alone, you can use him as a no-value, short-priced rolling exotic single, or simply skip it altogether.

    __________________________________________________ ___________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 5: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Flint Stroll
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Flint Stroll was privately sold by his prior owners to trainer Phil D’Amato after finishing third in a tougher starter’s allowance turf miler in November at Del Mar. At this level, the son of Flintshire should be capable of a quick return on investment in this restricted (nw-2) $32,000 seller over nine furlongs on grass. A prior winner over this course and distance, the 5-year-old gelding has several speed figures that are better than par for this level, so with Flavian Prat staying aboard we’re expecting a lower price that the listed morning line of 5/2. Arrest is worth using as a saver. The Skipshot gelding is competitive on numbers, lands the good rail, and has hit the board in his last pair.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 6: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: A-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Ice Dancing
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: With the anticipated scratch of Justique, this year’s edition of the Santa Ynez Stakes-G3 looks made to order for Ice Dancing. The Richard Mandella-trained filly is fresh from a clever maiden win that produced a career top speed figure, and she is likely to continue her improving pattern at this extended sprint distance that compliments her stalking style. From her cozy outside draw, Flavian Pratt can dictate whatever trip he chooses and then push the button when he deems appropriate. We’ll make her a win play and rolling exotic single.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 7: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Excelia; 1-Princess Bettina; 7-Arinniti
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Excelia shows the speed/fade, route-to-sprint angle that always catches our eye in these Hillside turf sprints. She was strictly a sprinter as a 2-year-old last year in Ireland, so this turn back in trip is what she almost certainly needs to regain her best form. Ramon Vasquez stays aboard, and with the addition of Lasix the Phil D’Amato-trained sophomore seems a solid top pick. Additionally, she’s looked quite good in the morning since raced, another positive factor. Princess Bettina will have to negotiate a decent trip from her rail draw, but if she can find room to rally from the top of the lane to the wire the daughter of Will Take Charge almost certainly will be heard from late. She’s a fit on speed figures and has clearly found a home on grass. Arinniti is an Irish invader making her U.S debut for Richard Mandella and has form overseas that should make a fit at this level on this circuit. Her Timeform ratings are respectable, so at 5-1 on the morning line she has to be included somewhere on your ticket.

    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

    RACE 8: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: A-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Speed Boat Beach
    Backups/savers: 2-Naitonal Treasure

Forecast: Four of the six entrants in this year’s renewal of the Sham Stakes-G3 hail from the Bob Baffert barn, so the race shape in this one mile main track affair is pretty much in his hands. Speed Boat Beach almost certainly will employ front-running tactics while his three stable mates are allowed to settle in behind the speedy colt and wait to launch their bids from the top of the lane to the wire. A track record holder in his only prior dirt outing, ‘Beach most recently won a stakes over this distance at Del Mar on grass, but very likely is even more effective on the main track. He’ll get his chance to prove that theory today. National Treasure finished a highly respectable third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1 and before that was a strong runner-up in the American Pharoah S.-G1 over the local main track, so he could easily go favored based on resume. The son of Quality Road is removing blinkers for this race, indicating that rating tactics surely will be employed. If so, ‘Treasure may have a hard time catching Speed Boat Beach.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

    RACE 9: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Lincoln Hawk; 7-Mecklenburg; 4-Avenue
    Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Given the projected race shape, which indicates the early fractions will be at least decent if not fast, Lincoln Hawk should have every chance to produce a winning late kick in this nine furlong allowance optional claimer over nine furlongs on grass. First or second in four of six outings over the Santa Anita turf course, the Irish-bred gelding in fast on numbers, picks up Flavian Prat, and with good racing luck and some help up front should be along in time. Mecklenburg is likely the controlling speed and is dangerous again after finishing third in the same race our top pick finished second in at Del Mar last month. He’s been pretty much a miler throughout his career, and it will be interesting to see if he can carry his speed this far if left alone on the front end. Avenue is a marathoner by trade but has won at a mile and one-eighth in the past and will be rolling late. He’s got a touch of class and must be considered a major player.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    January 8, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a 15-race card scheduled. The feature goes in Race 11, an Open Handicap Pace with an $18,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 also starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

2-One Last Laugh (7/2)-Winner of >$197,000 in 2022 is usually in the hunt at this class especially when starting from the inside. Best to respect, should be on the point or in the pocket after the wings fold.
6-Rockn Motion (4-1)-Was chasing a 1/5 shot in last who was driven by Wrenn and he returns to steer this Burke trainee. Got caught behind dull cover and wasn't catching the winner anyway. Should get a different trip and there won't be a 1/5 shot in this race.

    Race 12

1-Palomar (8/5)-This is a soft spot for the program chalk and it could be a drop and pop situation. But can't completely trust this 8-year-old after going 3-39 last year, and this is only the 2nd Nfld start. Should be better in the 2nd race on this surface but offers no value.
3-My Friend Mel (5-1)-Raced well against better and also drops to a spot to shine. The Roegner barn has posted 29% winners over the last 30 days and this beaten odds-on chalk could make amends tonight.
6-Nvrfearlloydishere (5/2)-Like the others above this 9-time winner in 2022 is dropping in search of the top prize and should relish the company. Merriman may need to be on the lead turning for the wire to take a picture and that scenario could set-up here.

    Race 13

3-Smoking Jet (9/5)-This veteran from the Burke stable does well versus Open company and has banked over $338k in 95 starts. This will be the 1st race here since the fall when he rattled off a couple of wins. Back class should show and appears to be a clean trip away from his 15th win in 26 starts at Nfld.

    Race 14

1-Seaside Meditation (3-1)-Recent form has been dull, last time was on an off-track and doesn't do well on wet surfaces. Tough to swallow the short price, the barn has been cold and has been camera shy. May land in the pocket behind #5, who should be the main threat, and trip out.
5-Officer Wholihan (5/2)-Couldn't catch a well-meant winner at this class on 12-28. Merriman may get the top and play catch me if you can. Looking at a short price, but this is a suspect field and has a pilot who knows how to win this kind of race.
7-Devil Or Angel (9/2)-Tharps takes the lines and the last time he steered it was an aggressive attempt. Left with a 26.2 opening quarter from post 3 and faded badly but had missed a start. Will look for a sharp steer in a real taffy pull.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    Fair Grounds - Race #4
    Picks Notes
#6 Oak Hill Solution Dropper has a bit of appeal at a price in here, as he has some tactical route pace that should keep him in a great spot while getting back around two turns. Worth a look.
#4 Payday Too They're willing to lose him for a third of the price they paid a few months ago, so I'm not totally sold on the fact that he's going to bring a huge effort on the drop, but his baseline form is probably good enough to be a handful here.
#9 Imindycatbirdseat He's pretty reliable and has proven a good fit at this kind of level in recent starts, but he's sure to get bet a bit again in here. Capable player.
Race Summary Oak Hill Solution has done his best work at longer trips, so I'm willing to forgive the dull recent sprint form in hopes that he'll bounce back with something better today while overlooked on the tote.
    Fair Grounds - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#3 Super Wise I really liked his two-back try on the lead, but he couldn't find the front easily last time out and gave way without much fight. Think he's quick enough to land the lead with these, and his back turf form is interesting enough. Solid lean.
#2 Win Worthy He is a pretty reliable finisher who would benefit if someone hassled the top choice in the early going, and he has been in with some decent groups over the course of the last year. That said, he already had a few tries with similar here last year.
#8 Freedom's Way He has already landed a couple underneath shares with similar since stepping up to face winners, and he might be able to find a pretty cozy spying spot with these.
Race Summary Think Super Wise would benefit from a quick start and having a go of it on the front end in here, and I think his best stuff keeps him in the mix if he's able to stretch these out a bit early.
    Fair Grounds - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#6 Autumn's So Flashy Think he's got a big chance to land the finale with a handful of forward players signed on in here who can't hang late. Hoping an early battle between a few of the cheap speed types will set the table for him to roll late.
#7 Lincoln Production Nothing wrong with the debut effort, and something similar to that try would probably keep him in the mix with these even if that wasn't the fastest race. A move forward makes him tough in a spot where he figures for a good setup from off the pace.
#5 Cigar Van Think he's worth a little consideration underneath or on swing tickets, as he has been away slowly in his last two starts, but he ran an okay race in his Evangeline debut last summer when he broke well and was able to flash some speed. Class drop should help -- he wouldn't surprise me a bit at a price.
Race Summary Autumn's So Flashy ran well off the long layoff last time out, and they obviously found the right level for him off the break. He's got a little upside with that race under his belt, and I think he gets a race flow that might drop this right in his lap.

    Oaklawn Park - Race #1 - Post: 12:30pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $27,000 Class Rating: 81

    Rating:

    #1 OJITOS (ML=7/2)
    #5 AFRICAN WARRIOR (ML=3/1)

OJITOS - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This gelding fits the bill. This horse likes to win on different ovals. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. You have to really like that recent race figure, 75, which is the best last race speed figure of this bunch. This equine collects a lot of cash per race around the track. Utmost in this event. AFRICAN WARRIOR - State bred races are generally easier than 'open' company, and this gelding's move into the 'state bred' class today should make him tough in here. Taking this jockey/conditioner combination is a good decision.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ROCK CITY ROCKET (ML=2/1), #8 ORBITAL STARR (ML=5/1), #2 OBVIOUSLY TOO (ML=8/1),

ROCK CITY ROCKET - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent success in short distance affairs in order to support him. ORBITAL STARR - Difficult to bet on any entrant in a short distance event if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last 60 days. OBVIOUSLY TOO - Doubtful for this entrant to do much running with no recent good showings in a sprint contest. Hasn't been close to winning at all recently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 OJITOS to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/5 or better though
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,5]

    Race 9 - Stakes - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $65000 Class Rating: 93

BOLD EGO H. - FOR FILLIES AND MARES, FOUR YEAR-OLDS AND UPWARD. NON LASIX STAKE. FREE TO NOMINATE; $500 TO ENTER. WEIGHTS ASSIGNED. HIGH WEIGHTS PREFERRED. TOTAL EARNINGS IN 2021-2022 WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE THE ORDER OF PREFERENCE FOR HORSES OF EQUAL WEIGHT. CLOSED FRIDAY DECEMBER 30, 2022 AT 4:00 P.M. WITH 11 NOMINATIONS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 10 ARI OAKLEY 2/1
    # 5 OUTSIDE THE LAW 4/1
    # 9 FLYIN FALYNN 9/2

ARI OAKLEY looks to be a competitive contender. Looks formidable against this group and will most likely be one of the front-runners. Could beat this group given the 91 speed rating earned in her last outing. Has to be given consideration against this group of horses in this race displaying very good numbers recently and an average speed figure of 83 under similar conditions. OUTSIDE THE LAW - Shows signs of the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 89 speed figure which is one of the best in this group. This racer enters today's outing now going off Lasix. FLYIN FALYNN - Posted a sound speed figure in the latest race. Can run another good one in this race. This one has been constatntly racing well recently.

    Gulfstream Park - Race #8 - Post: 3:40pm - Maiden Special - 7.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $84,000 Class Rating: 84

    Rating:

    #11 MORAL TURPITUDE (ML=8/1)
    #7 BO DEREK (ML=5/1)
    #8 MYSTIC SUNRISE (ML=20/1)

MORAL TURPITUDE - This filly is in fine form, having run a strong race on December 11th, finishing fifth. After the race aboard this animal on December 11th, the jock is going to be in tune with the filly much better. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the 1st time should be considered. That's what we have here. This filly's last fig earned on December 11th is at the top in last race speed figures. BO DEREK - Last time out, finished fourth on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs. Have to do better right here. Horse got beaten up in her only race. With a clean trip, I look for this one in the winner's circle photo. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here. MYSTIC SUNRISE - Jockey jumped on this filly's back for the 1st time on December 18th. Should be in tune with the equine even better today. The addition of Lasix might make this horse run well in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 LAURANA (ML=7/2), #6 BE MY SUNSHINE (ML=4/1), #4 MO TOWN MADISON (ML=6/1),

LAURANA - This horse will most likely be way back as this group crosses the finish. BE MY SUNSHINE - Not the best 'spot' in this race. MO TOWN MADISON - The lack of early speed in the last one, a route clash, is a bit troublesome. This steed hasn't been near the victor at the finish line recently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #11 MORAL TURPITUDE to win. Have to have odds of at least 5/2 or better though
    EXACTA WAGERS: 11 with [7,8]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:

    Race 8 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $26000 Class Rating: 66

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS. WEIGHT, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE NOVEMBER 8 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $12,500, IF FOR $10,000, ALLOWED 4 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 7 BLAME THE BOURBON 5/2
    # 4 DART 3/1
    # 3 HOPE HE'S FAST 6/1

I've got to go with BLAME THE BOURBON. Overall the Speed Figures of this horse look decent in this outing. Going in a dirt sprint race gives this gelding a solid shot. Will almost certainly come out strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the front end recently. DART - Wagerers should probably note that this pony runs on Lasix today. Have to wager on this money-making jock and trainer duo. HOPE HE'S FAST - Looks formidable for the conditions of this affair today, showing solid numbers in dirt sprint races lately. Players ought to take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group.
