    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 8 PURE MAGIC GIRL 5/1
    # 7 ALTHENA 6/1
    # 6 SUMMER FLOWER 9/2

I think PURE MAGIC GIRL is a very strong choice. Earnings per start in turf route races is strong for this equine. In fine fettle, and coming back in next to no time again this time around. Is worth a close look and may be a wager - strong speed figures (60 average) at today's distance and surface lately. ALTHENA - Sound average Equibase Speed Figures in turf route races make this racer a key contender. Have to love when any horse makes a quick turnaround. SUMMER FLOWER - The speed figure of 63 from her latest affair looks decent in here. Could provide positive dividends based on respectable recent speed figures with an average of 53.

    # 3 MORNING ADDICTION 9/5
    # 6 BLURSDAY 10/1
    # 5 HIIS REINA 5/1

I think MORNING ADDICTION is a solid choice. Has to be considered against this group displaying competitive numbers lately and an average Equibase Speed Fig of 88 under similar conditions. He has been travelling admirably recently while recording very solid speed figs. Should be given a chance in this competition if only for the quite good Equibase Speed Fig recorded in the last race. HIIS REINA - Is worth a look and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (80 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. Has strong Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet in this contest.

    Laurel - Race #5 - Post: 2:23pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $41,000 Class Rating: 78

    Rating:

    #4 ONE WAY FARRIOR (ML=8/1)
    #12 BIGDADDYSBOY (ML=8/1)
    #1 LE VIN (ML=4/1)

ONE WAY FARRIOR - He must like the track here. He just won over the track after shipping in. Magee, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix right here in this race. A positive sign. BIGDADDYSBOY - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Robb. This gelding should be in top form, this far into his form cycle. I like that recent race on December 30th at Laurel where he finished fourth. Lets try to beat the probable favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a respectable race. LE VIN - Look at this pattern of improvement. 57/59/76 are the last 3 speed figs. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the 1st time should be considered. That's what we have here.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 CATALEYA STRIKE (ML=9/2), #2 IN THE DANCE (ML=5/1), #11 KING'S RIVER (ML=6/1),

CATALEYA STRIKE - In any race of 7 furlongs, I like to play a contender that has been looking good in sprint races recently. Finished second in his most recent race with a run-of-the-mill rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch. IN THE DANCE - Tough to support any animal that runs as well as he did and then lays up and doesn't workout at all. Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent success in short distance contests in order to wager on him. Any animal coming out of a route event should show some early speed to battle with the sprinters. KING'S RIVER - Awfully difficult to bet on this mount when he hasn't been showing any signs of life lately.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #4 ONE WAY FARRIOR to win if we can get at least 4/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,4,12]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:

    Aqueduct - Race #1 - Post: 11:50am - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $70,000 Class Rating: 78

    Rating:

    #2 SCHERZANDO (ML=6/1)
    #3 FLYING IN STYLE (ML=9/2)

SCHERZANDO - Classic handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a layoff generally leads to a big effort. Going to run a nice one here. Finished fourth at Aqueduct last out. Was close at the end and at odds of 6/1 in this field, he looks like a possible contender. FLYING IN STYLE - This gelding is in superb form right now. Ran third last time around the track and comes back quickly. Gelding is a few starts into a return here. Should give a big race today.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #4 CALDO CANDY (ML=7/5), #7 FLIP'S DREAM (ML=7/2), #1 PASCHAL MOON (ML=6/1),

CALDO CANDY - This steed will likely be pulling up the rear as this field crosses the wire. FLIP'S DREAM - Hasn't been close to winning at all recently. PASCHAL MOON - Somewhat easily forgotten speed rating in the last race at Aqueduct at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't think this entrant will improve too much in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #2 SCHERZANDO to win. Have to have odds of at least 5/2 or better though
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,3]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    None

    January 28, 2024
    Jeff Siegel’s 1/ST Glance: Santa Anita – Sunday, January 28, 2024

    RACE 1

    6-HAPPYASACLAM
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Rising speed figures when every outing and is ready to graduate.
    • Good stalking style and appears likely to enjoy a trouble free journey.
    • Freshened for two months, shows a healthy recent series of workouts.

Others to consider: 5-No Way It’s Today (GB)

    RACE 2

    4-BILLY JOE SHAVER
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Realistic class drop from maiden special weight to maiden claiming.
    • Switches to top rider Juan Hernandez, adds Lasix, room to improve.
    • First time routing, style suggests he should enjoy the longer trip.

    Others to consider: 1-Twilight Moon.

    RACE 3

    4-MIRARI
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Nosed out at Keeneland in debut last fall; earned a good figure.
    • Hit the front but was nailed late while running a winning race.
    • Barn has strong stats with layoff runners, can fire a big shot fresh.

Others to consider: 5-No Nay Never.

    RACE 4

    5-WELL FUNDED
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Good Magic filly finally makes it to the races at age four for Baffert.
    • Half-sister to Grade-1 placed Tiz Midnight; dam was a top class mare.
    • Works are okay, nothing great, but she does not have much to beat.

Others to consider: 2-Side by Side.

    RACE 5

    5-THE BULLION BOMBER (Ire)
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • First start off the claim for Doug O’Neill (strong stats with this angle).
    • Dangerous early speed in a race that projects to have modest splits.
    • Concern: long time since won and has never hit the board on grass.

Others to consider: 2-Street Humor; 4-John Dunbar.

    RACE 6

    6-INDISPENSABLE
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Improving with every start and should be set to earn his diploma.
    • Was nine lengths clear of the rest over this track and distance.
    • Well regarded; 3yo Constitution colt cost $825,000 as a yearling.

    Others to consider: 1-New King.

    RACE 7

    5-HAMWOOD FLIER (Ire)
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • Ton of speed but has been routing since 2021; love the turn back.
    • Was a 16-runner maiden winner in Ireland the last time she sprinted.
    • Intriguing barn and jockey switch, two months rest, can fire fresh.

Others to consider: 4-Daniel’s Magic; 1-Mucho Del Oro.

    RACE 8

    5-FLATTERWITHJEWELS
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Rare claim by Phil D’Amato, returns at same level, expecting improvement.
    • Two time winner over the Santa Anita main track, better distance today.
    • Likely to settle into a comfortable stalking trip and then have every chance.

Others to consider: 2-Sherlyn Go Go; 4-Sweet Hello.

    RACE 9

    10-KETONIA (Fr)
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Troubled trip in U.S. debut at Del Mar, had good form in France.
    • Adds Lasix, switches to Flavian Prat, and deserves another chance.
    • Healthy series of workouts for her first outing in seven weeks.

Others to consider: 2-Girl of My Dreams; 6-Not a Sinner.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

    January 28, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
    XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Cal Expo has a 10-race card with the 0.20 Pick 4 starting in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (6:55 PM PST)

3-Dancin Lance (3-1)-Got on the engine on 1-14 and almost lasted on a night that closers did well. Likes to win at CalX, 15 of 44 is impressive. James Kennedy should be on top or in the pocket and either can work for the top prize.
4-A Major Omen (2-1)-This is another 8-year-old who should go back to his usual style and be on the point or just behind the one above. Raced from the back on 1-14 and 8 lengths at the half was too much to overcome. Snapped a 2-race win streak and could return to winning ways tonight.

    Race 8 (7:15 PM PST)

4-Down It (10-1)-Cruised home in 153.1 three races back and since then had excuses in the next 3 starts. If there was a time where that same type of effort could happen again this might be it. The price will be right and has the gate speed to get the top and not look back.
5-Gorgeous For Real (2-1)-This isn't a solid field and will need to include with this post draw but doesn't merit a short price. She can win but it will probably only happen off a smooth trip.
6-Sporty Spook A (9/2)-Team Cutting entry is another who will need a trip but should offer a fair price. There was a time when this Sportswriter gelding would have crushed this field. But at 13, his winning moments are infrequent but is worth using against this crew.

    Race 9 (7:35 PM PST)

2-Sneak Peek Hanover (5/2)-Drops, comes back in sequence and may have met a beatable field. Will look for Luke Plano to stay in reach of the leaders, that's what this one-move type needs to win.
5-Marc Box Twenty (6-1)-Raced on 1-21 versus similar in what appeared to be a training mile. Needed the start, hadn't raced since 1-5 and was hung the mile that night. Lagged the gate to start, raced behind a gapper but went the back half in 58.3. Finished a well beaten 4th but has had excuses in the last 2 starts and comes back in sequence so will look for better at a price.

    Race 10 (7:55 PM PST)

1-Dardick Vic (12-1)-Price shot makes the 3rd start on Lasix and didn't have much of a chance in the previous 2 races. Started from post 8 and raced well after being far back early and will toss last week in the slop. Svendsen could work a ground saving trip and make the most of starting inside of the chalks.
6-Justcallmehungry (2-1)-Beaten 2-1 favorite tried going gate to wire and faded down the lane. Will add points for the effort, it came on a sloppy track and that isn't the type of trip the sophomore has been getting. Could be better here but the price will probably be small again.
8-Omadome (7/2)-Broke its maiden from post 7 at a healthy 6-1 last time and that was the 1st start for the Cutting barn. Did go a 57.1 back half and maybe this barn has found the keys to this youngster. The post should keep the price fair and deserves some respect. Faces a bit tougher and to win again will probably need its best race ever.

    0.20 Pick 4

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#10 Imperator Furiosa Guessing she'll get to go after a week's worth of rain in town, and she feels like play of the week (month?) material for me. Her last was better than it looks -- the pace wasn't all that quick but it fell apart in a hurry in the lane. She was the best of the forward players by a long way, and I think she'll handle these on the main.
#8 Upswell She's probably the one if this stays on the turf while dropping class, as she only faded late while facing better last out and would land in a pretty modest spot today.
#2 Purring She'll go first out for a team that does decent work with these types, and they've obviously got her set up with some reasonable expectations right out of the box.
Race Summary Imperator Furiosa got a major trip note for me out of that last one after the race completely broke in the middle of the stretch for no real reason. She stayed on best of the speed that day, and I'm going to upgrade that race as she hopefully heads in today. Bankroll builder and single over here.
    Fair Grounds - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#2 Freeburn There is a bit of other pace lined up in here, but she might be involved pace from the inside after prompting throughout in stakes company last out. Think she'll handle these even while trying older horses.
#3 Sweet Darlin That was a visually sharp debut effort when showing solid acceleration to easily outfinish seven others, and any kind of upside off that run might put her into the same league as the top choice. Interesting.
#6 Olivia G She is one of the classier runners in here with a lot of stakes placings on her page, and she has enough tactical speed to find a good spot tracking the rail runner. Chance.
Race Summary Freeburn is a very early season 3-year-old lined up to face some older horses if she goes here, but I think the race flow might give her a chance to score all the same. She has seemed like a high-upside filly throughout her short career, so I wouldn't be shocked to see her hold her own here.
    Fair Grounds - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#3 Helaire Going to give him one more chance after chasing in a few of those recent starts. He's meeting another tough group, as these higher-end LA-bred allowance races always draw some stakes types, but I think his last two are better than they look. Price shot.
#7 Mike J He ran a good one in that stakes try here earlier this month, and he draws outside of the best of the other pace. Might be the one to reel in late.
#4 Clear as a Bele He's an honest tactical type who has only ever run bad going long, and he should offer a decent price while catching a pretty deep group here.
Race Summary Helaire has some price appeal in here, as his last two have been decent enough finishing efforts, and this is right around the time of the year when he got good here last season.

Rotation #200522: English FA Cup | Fourth Round Sunday Free Pick UNDER 4 -125 in Newport County vs Manchester United @ 11:30 AM ET - Newport is a League Two outfit. They will go very conservative in their formation here at home and just try to hang tough and frustrate Man U in this one. While Man U should eventually break through and score some goals, it could be quite a frustrating afternoon for the visitors. I think the hosts, especially playing a 5-3-2 setup, will struggle to score but will also be successful in slowing down Man U. Look for a 2-0 type final here and a valiant effort from the hosts in this one. In this case we have a lot of value with a high total posted on this one as the style of play should dictate a bit of a grinder here. Free Pick UNDER 4 -125 in Newport County

FRANK’S CUTTING ROOM FLOOR FOR SUNDAY, 1/28:

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Sunday afternoon is with the Indiana Pacers minus the points versus the Memphis Grizzlies. Indiana (26-21) has pulled off two straight upset victories after their 133-131 upset win against Phoenix as a 5-point underdog on Friday. The Pacers have covered the point spread in 8 of their last 12 games after winning two or more games in a row. They stay at home where they have covered the point spread in 14 of their last 22 games with the Total set at 230 or higher. Memphis (18-27) has delivered three straight upset victories after their 107-106 victory against Orlando as a 6.5-on Friday. The Grizzlies web covered the point spread in four of their last six games — but they have then failed to cover the point spread in 6 straight games after covering the point spread in four or more of their last six contests. They have also failed to cover the point spread in 27 of their last 39 road games as an underdog. Take Indiana minus the points. Best of luck — Frank.
