Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 2/11/24

    February 11, 2024
Jeff Siegel’s 1/ST Glance: Santa Anita

    RACE 1

    4-INTO IT
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Too fresh and pulled in recent comeback, should bet set today.
    • Most effective with a second flight trip, tough if cooperates.
    • Career top speed figure in last race, similar effort can beat these.

Others to consider: 2-National Generaux (Ire); 5-Street Hunter.

    RACE 2

    3-GYPSY LYNN
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Drops below her claim price and to her lowest level ever.
    • Pivotal jockey switch to Juan Hernandez, will be a short price.
    • First and second in three starts over the Santa Anita dirt strip.

Others to consider: 4-Keep Your Coil.

    RACE 3

    3-OOBBBAKAKAYO
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Tipped hand in debut when closing strongly to be third.
    • Gets an extra half furlong to work with, can step forward.
    • Two sharp drills since raced, appears ready to graduate.

    Others to consider: 5-Travelin’ Show.

    RACE 4

    2-SHE’S MY NIECE
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Slightly disappointing in last after runaway maiden score.
    • Retains Hernandez, remains protected, controlling speed.
    • First or second in three of six starts over the local dirt track.

    Others to consider: 7-Pink Whitney.

    RACE 5

    2-DEVILISH DESIRE
    Degree of confidence: B

    • In the money in all four starts, back sprinting, ready to graduate.
    • Style suits this course and distance, wants to be held up early.
    • Reunited with Flavian Prat, fast on figures, edge with best race.

    Others to consider: 7-Captain Choochies.

    RACE 6

    2-Maymun
    Degree of confidence: A

    • Won like a top prospect in debut with a stakes quality speed figure.
    • Stretches out off one sprint (would prefer two); likely will not matter.
    • Pedigree says added distance will not be an issue, gate-to-wire tactics.

    Others to consider: none.

    RACE 7

    1-ALLURING
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Visually impressive beating maidens on the flat course; up the ladder.
    • Good tactical speed but seems likely to do her best work in the stretch.
    • Rail post no help over the downhill course but seems solid, nonetheless.

Others to consider: 7-Voodoo Magic (Fr); 11-Julias Dream.

    RACE 8

    3-DANGEROUS GAME
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Wide open grass grab bag for older state bred maiden claimers.
    • Has done some good work while getting cranked up for his debut.
    • Nice mover probably wants to settle early and then take hold late.

Others to consider: 7-Antonsen; 6-Spend It All.

    RACE 9

    10-COMRADERY (Ire)
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Projected hot early pace should complement his late running style.
    • Three time winner over the local lawn has solid figures for this level.
    • Drawn farther outside then preferred, must drop over and get cover.

Others to consider: 3-Giovinazzo; 4-Marks Hip.

Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

    February 11, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Hawthorne Racecourse has an 11-race program with the 0.50 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 8. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (3:20 PM PST)

4-Playtorock (6-1)-Starts slowly and finishes in a hurry. Has been a bridesmaid in the last 2 starts versus this kind. Fits and should be in the hunt at the wire as long as there is an honest pace.
5-Mr Charisma (7-1)-Recent efforts have been dull when facing Open company but knows how to win in Stickney
(8-3-1-0). Drops to the level of its last win and is well worth a swing at the morning line price.
6-Fox Valley Steeler (9-1)-This Simmons trainee has had excuses but will need a top try to win at this level. Looking for a price to start this sequence and with Casey Leonard taking the controls tonight this 4-year-old could surprise.

    Race 9 (3:40 PM PST)

2-Who'zz This Sky (15-1)-This 3-year-old and the one below made interference breaks at the start last week. Oddly enough the problem was caused because a possum decided to run across the track as the field approached. Raced well considering and will use the price shot with an inside post draw.
4-Telstar (4-1)-Went off-stride and was 8-lengths back at the 1st call. Came off cover and rallied with a nice drive by Kyle Wilfong to finish a tight 3rd. Beaten even money chalk could make amends.
10-Cash With Joe (5-1)-Willing to fade the program chalk #6 and will use Mike Oosting on this dropper who raced gamely last time. Started from post 9 and missed by a neck. Gets no reprieve from a bad post but might be sharp enough to overcome the outside draw.

    Race 10 (4:00 PM PST)

1-Double Parked (9/2)-Drew the rail and missed by a neck last week. Comes back, drops in for a tag again and gets rewarded with the same post. Wilfong should follow the same plan and work a cozy trip. Using but expecting the price will be lower than the morning line.
2-Street Boy (9-1)-Should be worth a play at 9-1 with this post draw even though bumping up. Brandon Bates has one move to use. Could get a suck around trip and then look to roll late.
6-Fox Valley Ozzy (4-1)-Comes off a couple of bumpy trips and that could be an issue again. Should offer a square price and will hope Gary Rath can work a smooth journey. This is probably the last time for quite a while that the Illinois bred could take a picture.
9-Josie Rocksmyworld (12-1)-Interesting this Illinois bred waited to the end of the meet to race without hopples. Has cashed checks at this level recently and will look for improvement at a price.

    Race 11 (4:20 PM PST)

1-Allegheny Hanover (3-1)-Todd Warren steers again after leaving from the same post and winning. Should relish the company and will look for the pilot to follow the same plan at a short price.
5-Silverstone (6-1)-Steps-up after winning 2 of the last 3 starts and shouldn't be out of place tonight. Could offer some value and Wilfong can have in striking range at the top of the lane.

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Oaklawn Park - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#4 Vincita He showed a little enthusiasm late in the sprint debut at Fair Grounds, but he gets around two turns today while getting the rider who is by far the best bet for your dollar going long here right now. Plus Lasix? Sign me up.
#5 Riyadh Moon Forward player couldn't hang late in the debut, but that route run might set him up for something better at second asking. He doesn't seem to be meeting a ton of other early burn, so he could be the one to catch in the lane.
#9 Flashy Fast He may still have another step forward in him while making just his third career start and second trip to post off the break. Has some work to do.
Race Summary Vincita offers enough things to like and could be a midrange price in a race with a couple other logical win candidates. #10 Native Land is another to include if your strongest opinions lie elsewhere.
    Oaklawn Park - Race #2
    Picks Notes
#11 Queenies Way The form out west soured pretty quickly, but she's coming back fresh off a decent rest while getting back over a surface she seemed to like last season. Encouraging Feb. 1 work? Take a look.
#1 Kitiara She cuts back off the layoff after the really poor try in the first start for that barn, but she had been pretty reliable up to that point and is another who has some decent back form here.
#9 Bennykayandsuzytoo She's a dangerous pace dropper who could air by five or pop and fade badly given the flat recent form. Not sure the price will be interesting enough for me to want to saddle myself with those questions.
Race Summary Queenies Way has some price appeal while drawing well to force the pace from the outside, and maybe she can apply some heat to class-dropping 'Suzytoo in the early going to see if that one will fold up turning for home.
    Oaklawn Park - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#5 My Good Fortune She earned this test with a couple solid tries off the claim for this team, and she owns some super reliable finishing lines. Think she's interesting if the price stays fair.
#6 Insensitive She took her time to graduate, but her local return produced that solid score last time out, and she wouldn't be a total surprise right back with a good spying trip waiting for her.
#9 Flashy Lass Tough call for me, as she's got some form that keeps her in the mix, but she might still be a short kind of price coming off a fading effort last out.
Race Summary My Good Fortune figures to get rolling late, and her consistency makes her a danger on the rise. Maybe Insensitive is the right one to try to get in the frame with the more logical players?

Race 3 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.5f on the Turf. Purse: $65000 Class Rating: 87

FOR CALIFORNIA BRED OR CALIFORNIA SIRED MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 122 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 2 OOBUBBAKAKAYO 8/5
    # 5 TRAVELIN' SHOW 2/1
    # 4 DRIVE FOR SHOW 3/1

OOBUBBAKAKAYO has a respectable shot to take this race. Displays the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 83 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the most respectable in this group. Solid gamble today with second time Lasix. Hanson has him trained admirably to break quickly out of the starting gate. TRAVELIN' SHOW - He has been running admirably and the speed figures are among the best in this group. The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a reversal of fortune for this gelding. DRIVE FOR SHOW - Have to wager on this gelding with the strong earnings per start in turf sprint events. Ran a strong last race.

    Golden Gate Fields - Race #7 - Post: 2:45pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,500 Class Rating: 93

    Rating:

    #8 SUGAR BEETS (ML=9/2)
    #7 BUENISIMO (ML=4/1)
    #6 KO SAMUI (IRE) (ML=6/1)
    #9 GALLANT WARREN (ML=10/1)

SUGAR BEETS - Winless in his last three starts, this gelding did win on Sep 23rd at Golden Gate Fields versus tougher competition. The January 13th race at Golden Gate Fields was at a class level of (98). Dropping down in the class scale considerably, so he should be in a good spot. BUENISIMO - Sherman drops him down to this level. You don't need too much more from the horse's history to think this horse is in a good spot at this level. KO SAMUI (IRE) - This thoroughbred coming off a sharp race in the last 30 days is a win candidate in my book. Chavez rode this animal for the first time last time around the track and comes right back today. This horse brings in a lot of dough per race around the track. Utmost in this event. GALLANT WARREN - Although it's been awhile, this gelding last won at this same class and distance. I think he could run back to that old form today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 AZURE STAR (IRE) (ML=5/2), #2 YOU KIDDING ME (ML=6/1), #3 NUESTRO ENGREIDO (ML=8/1),

YOU KIDDING ME - Finished first in his most recent effort with a quite unimpressive speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this group. NUESTRO ENGREIDO - 8/1 odds isn't enough for this entrant when examining the most recent outings. I cannot play this frequent non-winner. Gets the task finished from time to time.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 5 THE ARCADIAN WAY 30/1
    # 6 BOO BOO KITTY 20/1
    # 1 STONE SILENT 9/5

THE ARCADIAN WAY is the top wager in this race especially at 30/1. Carroll has one of the most respectable winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. Look for a decent pace improvement from this animal who enters now going off Lasix today. BOO BOO KITTY - Will likely be one of the early speedsters of the bunch going into the midpoint of the affair. Looks to have a formidable class edge based on the latest company kept. STONE SILENT - Boasts reliable speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this field. Must be carefully examined given the class of races run lately.

    Oaklawn Park - Race #2 - Post: 1:03pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $36,000 Class Rating: 74

    Rating:

    #10 PUNCHY GIRL (ML=9/2)
    #4 WAR MUSIC (ML=20/1)

PUNCHY GIRL - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This mare fits the bill. Trainer Morse gave this mare a good stiff work. Last one was 2nd fastest of the day. This entrant could be tough in today's race, especially since Bejarano rode last race out and now should be familiar with this one. Morse drops her down to this class. You don't need too much more handicapping info to think this thoroughbred has a good chance at this level. WAR MUSIC - Taking a trip to a lower level; has the form to make her presence felt. Sub-par performance last time around the track at Oaklawn Park was due to the off-going (she finished eleventh). Expect better in this race without the off-track conditions.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #9 BENNYKAYANDSUZYTOO (ML=2/1), #8 SHE'S STORMING (ML=7/2), #7 NAVAGATIONALBEACON (ML=8/1),

BENNYKAYANDSUZYTOO - 2/1 odds isn't enough for this participant when looking at the most recent outings. No accomplishments for this entrant in a sprint race over the last two months tells me that this filly is in a difficult situation not probable that the speed fig she registered on January 13th will be enough in this contest. SHE'S STORMING - This filly hasn't had any recent good fortune in short distance affairs. I find it hard to play her in this race. This filly hasn't been showing me anything in the last couple of outings. NAVAGATIONALBEACON - This mare hasn't had any strong victories in short distance events in the last couple of months. Awfully hard to wager on this questionable contender when she hasn't been showing any gumption lately.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - PUNCHY GIRL - Some may pass on this one given her lackluster showing at Oaklawn Park in last race. But that was in the mud. Watch out for this horse today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #10 PUNCHY GIRL on the nose if you can get odds of 9/5 or more

1st race [Md 20000, 6F] – (7) Union Belle flashed some speed in her third start, drops down in class, and gets first-time Lasix. (6) Brown as a Biscuit comes back in seven days after her 2024 debut which was her first start after the claim for Linda Rice. She pressed the pace and now cuts claiming price in half. (2) Extra Dirty has shown speed in most of her starts and also moves down from a $40,000 claimer. (4) Amy’s Light is a home-bred that did a little bit of running in her debut.
4th race [Alw 50000s, 1 1/8 mi] – (2) Grandpa’s Kid was second and then third in a pair of starter allowances back in December after getting claimed for $14,000. (6) Proven Hope won her last two races moving from a N2L to the N3L claimer. (4) Night Effect is projected to get loose on the lead and used that speed to finish fourth in a starter allowance after getting claimed from a win for a $16,000 tag. (3) Centavo has the most career wins in the field with four including a win last time in an open claimer.
8th race [OC 50k/N1X] – (7) Coppa Girl has three finishes in the top three at this level since November with speed figures that top this field. [(1) Toned Up / (1A) Essaouira] make an entry for owner Michael Dubb where both halves enter with the claiming option and multiple victories. (4) I Feel the Need was second in a starter allowance in her second start since being claimed by Linda Rice. (2) Rayya Valentine gets a pass for that start in the Ladies last month following her four-length maiden breaker.
9th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (8) Berning Beauty (A) broke slowly in his debut, got far behind in a large field, and rallied with energy to finish fourth. Blinkers go on. (9) Saint Gaudens (A) was sent off at the favorite in his debut for Chad Brown. He broke at the back and got forced out wide on a track that was favoring the inside and speed horses. [(1) Quiet Wisdom / (1A) Big Ego] are part of a Repole Stable entry where both are contenders. (5) Merlin’s Moment is a first-time starter out of a mare that won $221,000 and has produced one runner that won at first asking.
Best bets: Grandpa’s Kids (4th); Coppa Girl (8th). Best value: Union Belle (1st); Berning Beauty (9th).
