Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Pick 5 Analysis

    February 17, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a $1.00 Pick 5 that starts in Race 6, and it features a double carryover of $21,048. The sequence has an estimated pool of $80,000 with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (7:50 PM EST)

6-Ideal Destiny (2-1)-Shipped in from MVR and raced well to finish a close 2nd after being off 19 days. Luke Hanners sticks, has the gate speed to be forwardly placed, makes its 3rd start off a sick scratch and has won 5 of 15 at Nfld.
8-The Gypsy Queen IR (5/2)-Meadows shippers makes its Nfld debut, should fit with this crew and has won 7-straight. The Burke entry could offer a fair price with the outside draw. Has the gate speed to leave hard for the point and should be heard from if the turns aren't an issue.

    Race 7 (8:12 PM EST)

2-My Red Sea (7/5)-Comes in off a 4-race win streak versus similar and now goes from Greg Grismore to Ronnie Wren who knows well.
5-Lady Angel (3-1)-This mare likes to travel, racing at 4 different tracks in the last 5 outings. Has been claimed in the last 4 starts split between the Macomber and Miller barns. Just missed after getting on the engine in last. Beaten odds-on chalk could make amends.

    Race 8 (8:34 PM EST)

4-Ellianna R (7/2)-Has won 3 of 11 at Nfld, loses Kurt Sugg but Hunter Myers can do the job. Comes off a sharp effort to win and this won't be as easy. But should be in the hunt for another picture.
6-Field Tested (3-1)-Aaron Merriman should have enough gate speed to work with to race near the top of the stack. Has won 4 of 8 here, could get the top and make every call a winning one. Only issue might be, this is 3rd outing in 9-days, but did miss a couple of starts before this string of races.

    Race 9 (8:56 PM EST)

1-Mississippidragon (5/2)-Camera shy mare gets a positive driver change in Merriman, draws the rail, and drops. Needs to be better and this could be wake-up time.
3-Elvette Hanover (8/5)-This is another lady who doesn't enjoy posing but should fit well with this less than formful field. Hanners could have the pedal down to get the top and control the mile.

    Race 10 (9:18 PM EST)

2-Racing Glory (2-1)-Takes a meaningful drop in class and does good work at Nfld (11-3-3-1). Myers should be able to work a cozy trip from this post. This is a drop and pop candidate that deserves respect.
6-Filly Speaks (4-1)-Meadows shipper has won 2 of 7 at Nfld and each time tonight's pilot Ronnie Wrenn was between the pipes. Needs a trip and has shown big gate speed when racing here in December on a sloppy track. Will look for an aggressive drive and should be a square price.

    $1.00 Pick 5

    6,8/2,5/4,6/1,3/2,6
    Total Bet=$32

Dustin Fabian: Fair Grounds All-Stakes Pick 5 Ticket

    February 16, 2024 | By Dustin Fabian
The group at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet is pretty fired up for Saturday’s races. So much so, in fact, that they’ve dropped a $25,000 Hit & Split (!!) on the All-Stakes Late Pick 5 from the Fair Grounds, which kicks off in Race 10, at 5:21PM ET.

Fair Grounds ‘Road to the Kentucky Derby’ is one of the most popular in the nation, with the Risen Star being the first of the key ‘second-to-last’ preps on the path. It will be followed by the Rebel (Feb 24), Fountain of Youth (Mar 2), San Felipe (Mar 2), Gotham (Mar 2) and Tampa Derby (Mar 9). Simply put, it’s getting real and it’s time to separate the contenders from the pretenders.

And in the Risen Star, the ‘contenders’ seem to be out in force. Catching Freedom, Sierra Leone, Hall of Fame, Honor Marie, Real Men Violin, Resilience and Track Phanom are all listed as individual betting interests in this weekend’s Kentucky Derby Future Wager, indicating that a consensus thinks they have what it takes to be successful on the First Saturday in May.

As a bettor, though, my focus on Saturday is going to be that huge $25,000 Hit & Split on the All-Stakes Late Pick 5. After all, what better way to play than to target a pool where you get bonus money – and potentially a lot of bonus money – if you’re right?

    Here’s my ticket:

    Race 10 (5:21PM ET) – Al Stall Memorial Stakes (1 1/16 Miles – Turf)

The sequence starts with the $100K Al Stall Memorial, and five of the 13 fillies and mares entered here exit the Marie Krantz Memorial on January 20. The winner of that race, #3 CREATIVE CAIRO (7/2), was 5/1 that day and makes sense here at a fair price. #5 SPIRIT AND GLORY (3/1) is back from California and gets Flavien Prat to ride, which is always an upgrade on the lawn. Let’s go light here and hope those two get us through the opener.

    Race 11 (5:50PM ET) – G3 Mineshaft Stakes (1 1/16 Miles – Dirt)

With Saudi Crown around the world targeting the $20M Saudi Cup, this year’s Mineshaft appears more open than last month’s Louisiana Stakes that he won in a canter. I’m targeting three horses for our ticket. #1 RED ROUTE ONE (5/1) was respectable when 2nd in the Louisiana and his record while racing on Lasix is impressive. I like the inside draw and he stacks up well with this group. I want to give #9 SMILE HAPPY (5/1) another chance. He was terrible in the Louisiana, but with that tightener under his belt, I think he’s positioned to do better this go around the oval. And finally, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with #3 BEST ACTOR (3/1) – how did he lose the Indiana Derby(?!?!) – but he’s back in form for Brad Cox and that’s always a dangerous angle.

    Race 12 (6:19PM ET) – G3 Fair Grounds Stakes (1 1/8 Miles – Turf)

In last month’s Colonel E.R. Bradley, the race was over from the get go as #3 STRONG QUALITY (3/1) proceeded to take the field on a 1 1/16-mile chase around the merry go round on the front end. There are more horses entered this time (12 entries vs just 6 last out), but it doesn’t appear that many of the new shooters are major pace players. STRONG QUALITY should once again find himself in good position throughout from an inside post. #10 BEATBOX (7/2) has been wholly unlucky to have lost four close finishes in a row, but worthwhile that he was gaining on STRONG QUALITY last out, beaten just a head. And this race is slightly longer. Finally #11 EL GIGANTE (8/1) drew miserably, but was very good in the Woodchopper on December 30, outrunning the highly-regarded Northern Invader. His record with Lasix is great (4 for his last 4) and is a nice price in case they don’t let STRONG QUALITY walk up front.

    Race 13 (6:48PM ET) – G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes (1 1/16 Miles – Dirt)

Candidly, races like this feel like the greatest challenge in handicapping, generally for the worst return. We’ve got a seven-horse field and five of the seven are 5/1 or lower on the ML. It’s wide open…and there’s minimal value. On the bright side, this race has produced a plethora of recent Kentucky Oaks winners, including four since 2014 – Untapable (2014), Monomoy Girl (2018), Serengeti Empress (2019) and Pretty Mischievous (2023). I’m going to throw a blanket over as many horses as I can afford and use #1 TARIFA (5/1), #4 INTRICATE (3/1), #5 ALPINE PRINCESS (7/2), #6 V V’S DREAM (5/2) and #7 WEST OMAHA (9/2).

    Race 14 (7:17PM ET) – G2 Risen Star (1 1/8 Miles – Dirt)

The ‘get out’ race for Saturday is the day’s premier event, the Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star. #11 TRACK PHANTOM (7/2) has swept his way through the first two legs of Fair Grounds ‘Road to the Triple Crown,’ the Gun Runner and Lecomte. The issue facing handicappers is simple. He swept through those races with minimal competition and great pace setups. On paper, his frontrunning style doesn’t appear so advantageous, and Post #11 puts him at risk for a wide trip. #4 SIERRA LEONE (4/1) has the look of a ‘wiseguy’ play. He ran into the teeth of a potential speed bias in the G2 Remsen before a tenacious Dornoch repelled his winning bid. I like his potential for a fair pace setup, he’s proven at the distance, but he’ll need to overcome a 2 1/2-month layoff. TRACK PHANTOM’S stablemate #7 HALL OF FAME (6/1) was phenomenal in breaking his maiden on January 20 (Lecomte Day), but I’d tread just a little carefully there. He’s a horse to include, but….he loses his rider from that day (Rosario), he’s worked since once since that race and he’s off Lasix, which he used that day. Might be tough. #3 HONOR MARIE (6/1 ) would be a great story with fresh trainer Whit Beckham on the scene. The horse is a perfect 2-for-2 on dry tracks, but will need to overcome a nearly 3-month layoff.

    My Ticket:

    Race 10: 3, 5
    Race 11: 1, 3
    Race 12: 3, 10, 11
    Race 13: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7
    Race 14: 3, 4, 7, 11

    Ticket Cost (50-cent base): $120

Fair Grounds All-Stakes Pick 5 Primer | Saturday

    February 15, 2024 | By 1/ST BET
1/ST BET and Xpressbet are offering a $25,000 Hit & Split promotion on Saturday’s all-stakes pick five at Fair Grounds. The 50-cent minimum wager will encompass Races 10-14 and culminate with the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes and its potential impact on the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes trail.

Be sure to opt into the promo when you play Saturday at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet, and not only will you cash your pari-mutuel winnings if successful in the all-stakes pick five, but you’ll share in that $25,000 of bonus money only with other players on our platforms who also solve all five races.

Fair Grounds // Race 10 // $100,000 Al Stall Memorial Stakes

Comments: 13 are entered with #5 Spirit And Glory, a well-traveled mare who has lost 7 of her last 8, a tepid 3-1 morning line favorite. #3 Creative Cairo won the local prep last out, snapping a 10-race losing streak in her last-to-first rally.

Key Betmix Stat: Favorites own a sharp 12: 5-4-0 record in turf stakes at the current Fair Grounds meet, including 7 of the last 8 in the exacta.

    Fair Grounds // Race 11 // $250,000 Grade 3 Mineshaft Stakes

Comments: 8 of the 9 entrants have morning line projections between 3-1 and 8-1 odds in a wide-open forecast. None of these exit a stakes victory and only 2 runners won last time out, both in allowance company. Saudi Crown dominated the local prep, the Louisiana Stakes, but he’s off to the $20 million Saudi Cup next week and leaves 3 of his pursuers here to pick up the pieces. #8 Happy American has 13 local starts, while the remaining 8 runners have combined for just 5 trips over the FG main track and a lone victory by #7 Money Supply.

Key Betmix Stat: Trainer Todd Pletcher’s 5 stakes shippers to Fair Grounds last year netted 2 wins and a runner-up, including Pioneer of Medina’s victory in the Mineshaft. He sends #4 Gasoline from Florida.

    Fair Grounds // Race 12 // $175,000 Grade 3 Fair Grounds Stakes

Comments: Dozen entered at 1-1/8 miles on turf, including odds-on local prep winner #3 Strong Quality for Mark Casse, who is the 3-1 morning line favorite. The top-5 finishers from that Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes are back. #11 Gigante won December’s Woodchopper and bypassed the Colonel E.R. Bradley, coming in freshened off four well-spaced workouts for Steve Asmussen.

Key Betmix Stat: Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. has been exceptional in Fair Grounds turf races at this 1-1/8 miles trip over the past 5 years, winning 7 of 20 (35%) for a whopping $3.80 ROI for every $1 bet. He partners with #8 Camp Hope, who has been away since August.

    Fair Grounds // Race 13 // $300,000 Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes

Comments: Field of 7, the shortest lineup in the all-stakes pick 5, puts Kentucky Oaks hopefuls in the spotlight over 1-1/16 miles. Just in the last 6 years, this race has produced star winners like Monomoy Girl, Serengeti Empress, Clairiere and Pretty Mischievous. Saturday’s lineup includes victors of the Untapable Stakes (#5 Alpine Princess) and Silverbulletday Stakes (#7 West Omaha) already at the Fair Grounds meet. Those two Brad Cox trainees also are joined by Churchill Downs’ top freshman fillies from a year ago, Pocahontas winner #6 V V’s Dream and Golden Rod winner #4 Intricate.

Key Betmix Stat: Trainers Brad Cox and Steve Asmussen have combined to win 13 of the 19 Fair Grounds dirt route stakes for 3-year-old fillies since 2020. Cox saddles Tarifa, Alpine Princess and West Omaha, while Asmussen counters with Perfect Shot.

    Fair Grounds // Race 14 // $400,000 Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes

Comments: 12 Triple Crown hopefuls match up over 1-1/8 miles as #11 Track Phantom is the lukewarm chalk at 7-2 odds after victories in the Gun Runner and Lecomte Stakes already this meeting. He’ll take on almost an entirely new cast as only one alumnus of those previous meet stakes is back to challenge. The great Gun Runner won this race in 2016 and will be represented by two sons who may vie for favoritism, #4 Sierra Leone and #7 Hall of Fame. Arguably the deepest Kentucky Derby prep so far this year has last-out runners from Gulfstream, Oaklawn, Aqueduct, Churchill Downs and Fair Grounds in an inter-regional showdown.

Key Betmix Stat: Here are the win percentages over the past 5 years for horses racing in Fair Grounds dirt stakes races based on their last prep location: Churchill Downs (21%), Oaklawn (17%), Gulfstream (15%), Aqueduct (15%) and Fair Grounds (14%).

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #12
    Picks Notes
#3 Strong Quality Think he's going to be tough to beat right back after handling some of these on the lead last time out, and he's the likely controlling pace again today. Baseline effort should win this.
#2 Chasing the Crown Solid lean to him to get a piece of this on the rise, and I'd probably want him covered on the deeper backup tickets. He's getting a class test today, but he was in the frame with the top choice in allowance company in Florida last year and was pretty sharp in his local win last month.
#9 Harlan Estate There are a few lines on his page that would make him competitive, but I'm not sure he's getting a great race flow to kick on late today. Wouldn't be the biggest shock, but I expect him to be along late for something underneath.
Race Summary Strong Quality may not be much of a price today, as he just handled some of these at a short price last out and gets another favorable setup. Chasing the Crown is the intriguing riser.
    Fair Grounds - Race #13
    Picks Notes
#6 V V's Dream She may have taken a step back in that last one after a couple pretty big efforts in the fall last year, and she's back fresh in a meaningful spot, so I'm assuming she's here with purpose.
#5 Alpine Princess She already landed a minor stakes win over the local footing and comes back off a short December break. The Untapable win was certainly flattered when West Omaha rolled in the Silverbulletday last month.
#4 Intricate She didn't do anything wrong once she got two turns last year, and she seems ready enough off the break. In the mix.
Race Summary V V's Dream ran a couple of really big races last year before a flat run at 1/5 -- she returns today from that run and at least to this point seems like she might be a slight cut above these.
    Fair Grounds - Race #14
    Picks Notes
#5 Moonlight He was just a little flat in that last one, but I'm expecting something better today, and he might be able to get the jump on a couple of the logical finishers. Interesting at a midrange price.
#4 Sierra Leone He rallied well in both starts last year including a just-miss effort in the Grade II Remsen when stepping up in just his second career start. Dangerous.
#3 Honor Marie Could have put about four or five of them in this third spot in what feels like a competitive race -- but he has been solid through three starts and owns a Grade II win, and he'd benefit if the forward players drawn out wide all bothered each other early.
Race Summary Moonlight might be able to find a good trip spying the speed as some of the pace players cross over from wide draws, but this is a fun race with other players like #8 Catching Freedom, #11 Track Phantom, and #7 Hall of Fame.

    Gulfstream Park - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#8 IMAPEPPA (4-1) Claimed in debut, ran evenly in follow-up, good spot with second-time Lasix.
#6 WEEKEND CONCERTO (9-5) Also has speed, takes class plunge, Irad gets the call.
#4 FIRST SHOT FIRED (9-2) Rallied for second in debut sprint at this level, enters new barn.
Race Summary IMAPEPPA bumped a rival at the start, angled 4-wide for the stretch drive but couldn’t gain on the class-dropping winner. He draws a favorable post with Paco aboard and should be in the hunt throughout with a clean break. Let’s make him today’s Best Bet.
    Gulfstream Park - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#3 URANIUM (5-2) Seeks repeat on preferred surface, only second start ever at one mile.
#2 BOLDNESS (4-1) Chased 1-to-2 winner when second at this level two starts back.
#5 RHYMES LIKE DIMES (9-5) Remains hot at claim box, can join $100,000 Club.
Race Summary URANIUM, first or second in 12 of 23 starts at Gulfstream, has done his best running lately on conventional dirt, with a win and a second on fast surfaces. He got the jump on the odds-on favorite and held on to win despite drifting in a long sprint last out. Bet to win and place.
    Gulfstream Park - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#1 DOCTOR’S ORDERS (9-2) Casse firster has win-early bloodlines, has rail to negotiate in crowded field.
#8 EASTBOSTONBENNY (12-1) Improving, dug in to challenge winning fave last out, adds blinkers.
#5 SHARP WONDER (4-1) Solid work tab at Gulfstream, lures Irad to ride.
Race Summary DOCTOR’S ORDERS debuts as a gelding for a barn in the midst of a 16-for-72 run the last 30 days with a positive R.O.I. His sire, Awesome Slew, is the third-ranked Florida sire this year and his dam, Yes It’s Valid (24/4-6-0, $167k), ran second in MSW company to start her career and did her best running at ages 2 and 3. Bet to win and place.

    Race 3 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $6500 Class Rating: 35

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS. WEIGHT, 120 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE FEBRUARY 2 ALLOWED 1 LBS. A RACE SINCE JANUARY 17 ALLOWED 2 LBS. A RACE SINCE DECEMBER 17 ALLOWED 4 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $8,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 1 MATTER OF TRUST 10/1
    # 5 EL MARRON FUSTER 20/1
    # 3 KIAN 3/1

I have to consider MATTER OF TRUST in here especially at a long price. With Castro uptop him, this colt will most likely be able to break out early in this competition. When a handler brings any racer back this quickly it is a positive signal. EL MARRON FUSTER - This conditioner has done strongly recently with entries running at this distance and surface. Hard to pass on this colt with Adorno in the irons. KIAN - The handler wheels this one right back to race again. This pony has a wonderful win percent in dirt sprints.

    Laurel - Race #10 - Post: 5:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 60

    Rating:

    #6 VOODOO PRIESTESS (ML=2/1)

VOODOO PRIESTESS - This filly's last speed figure registered on December 16th is uppermost in last race speed figures.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 TITIAN TYRANT (ML=7/5), #4 KANEM (ML=4/1), #2 MUCHO MACHO MRYTLE (ML=9/2),

TITIAN TYRANT - Really had to show me much more in the last race. Never made much of an impact. This filly garnered a speed rating in her last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. KANEM - Hard to wager on any horse to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the risk. MUCHO MACHO MRYTLE - This entrant hasn't shown much life in the last couple races.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 VOODOO PRIESTESS to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: None

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    Pass
    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: Pass

    Aqueduct - Race #6 - Post: 2:51pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $70,000 Class Rating: 80

    Rating:

    #7 PERNO (ML=6/1)
    #9 ROMANTIC CHARMER (ML=8/1)
    #10 THAT'S MONEY (ML=5/2)

PERNO - Jockey jumped on this gelding's back for the first attempt on Jan 7th. Should be in touch with the animal even better today. This speedy sort should be aided by this shorter trip. ROMANTIC CHARMER - First timer here. An overlooked stat is the breeding, especially the dam. Dam's foals have won 50 percent of the time as first-time-starters. THAT'S MONEY - Pletcher adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a significant improvement.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 IRISH TENOR (ML=3/1), #1 SILVER SATIN (ML=6/1), #8 UPTOMYKNEESINIT (ML=6/1),

IRISH TENOR - Recorded a disappointing fig last race out in a Maiden Special race on January 18th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that rating. SILVER SATIN - This gelding likely won't be very close at the wire. UPTOMYKNEESINIT - This gelding hasn't had any in the money efforts in sprint races in the last 60 days.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 PERNO is the play if we get odds of 2/1 or better
    EXACTA WAGERS: 7 with [9,10]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    Box [7,9,10] Total Cost: $6
