Jeff Siegel's Whast You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 2/18/24

    February 18, 2024
    Jeff Siegel’s 1/ST Glance: Santa Anita – Sunday, February 18, 2024

    RACE 1

    3-AURATIUM
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • First time in a maiden claimer; can take advantage of the class relief.
    • Removes the blinkers, projects to settle early and deliver a good kick.
    • Rispoli-McCarthy powerful jockey/trainer combo (24% this season).

    Others to consider: 4-Ellie Moore-GB.

    RACE 2

    4-BONAQUA
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Finished strongly but ran out of room in a promising recent debut try.
    • Gets an extra half furlong to work with, Pratt returns, solid top pick.
    • Earned a solid speed figure; will not have to improve to beat this field.

Others to consider: 5-Nay V Belle.

    RACE 3

    7-FIRSTTIMEINFOREVER
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Clever winner over this course and distance, strong figure, can repeat.
    • Moving up from starter allowance to the first level, can handle the hike.
    • Likes to settle and take hold late; Frankie got to know her, stays aboard.

    Others to consider: 5-Katerini.

    RACE 4

    3-UNKEPT SECRET
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Has hit the board in six of nine career starts and is overdue for a win.
    • Actually finished first at this level two runs back but was disqualified.
    • Has enough speed to be on or near the lead, has little to worry about.

    Others to consider: 5-Warren’s Showgirl.

    RACE 5

    8-NAUVOO
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • Double jumped in class by new outfit following runaway $12,500 romp.
    • Earned a monster number in victory; will be a repeater with a similar fig.
    • Form suggests he is a need the lead type, so expect gate to wire tactics.

    Others to consider: 4-Good Juju.

    RACE 6

    6-SIR ATTICUS
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Exits a stakes quality allowance sprint and finished a strong third.
    • Lovely outside draw; projects to enjoy a comfortable stalking trip.
    • Very fast on figures, shows a win over this track and distance.

    Others to consider: 1-Escape Route.

    RACE 7

    6-STRIKINGLY
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • Has had 14 chances and cannot be trusted but rates the call by default.
    • Shows four placings from six starts over the local lawn, best when held up.
    • Solid runner-up facing similar older maiden foes, same effort beats these.

Others to consider: 1-Apple Fest; 4-Collectively.

    RACE 8

    2-BIG POND
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Lost the head bob in the La Brea Stakes, is owed one today.
    • Not a quick type but can be within striking range throughout.
    • Retains Frankie, solid on numbers, reliable for an honest try.

    Others to consider: 3-Daddysruby.

    RACE 9

    3-NITTI (Ire)
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Displayed promise in Ireland in good company, can fit with these.
    • Appeared fit and ready in recent breeze, can fire a big shot fresh.
    • Nicely drawn inside, lands Juan Hernandez, Timeform ratings OK.

Others to consider: 8-American Glory (GB); 7-El Rey Rey.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

    February 18, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo has a 12-race card with the 0.20 Pick 4 starting in Race 9. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (7:30 PM PST)

2-Wish I Had Thyme (3-1)-Drops after a slow start from post 7. Rallied down the lane versus better and beat that kind in the previous race. Gerry Longo, the regular pilot is back in the bike and should be a main player at this level.
5-Rockin The Dragon (12-1)-Team Kennedy entry probably was pace compromised in last when Luke Plano was steering. James is in charge tonight, and this lightly raced mare has a shot to surprise at a price with an efficient trip.
6-Bold New Beginning (6-1)-Like #2, this gal takes a meaningful drop. Nick Roland gets the nod, and he has steered before. Willing to toss the last start and should be forwardly placed throughout.
7-Nebble Hanover (10-1)-Comes out of the same race as the one above and that night speed didn't hold well. This is another price shot who drops and knows how to win here (14-7-1-0). Could be sitting on a big try in the 4th race since mid-July.

    Race 10 (7:50 PM PST)

2-Sherwood (5-1)-Tried hard from the 7-hole in last but needs a smooth journey to win. This 8-year-old has a nose for the wire at CalX (32-8-11-4). Kennedy could work a suck-around trip for a picture.
3-Myartblongstorock (4-1)-Jacob Cutting gets the call and he has done well with this 5-year-old. Raced against the bias in last and will look for a different trip tonight. Wouldn't want to take a short price with the 1-15 record at CalX but should be a player.
5-Aime Hanover (12-1)-This will be the 5th start on Lasix and hasn't posted a win at the meet. The last line was better than it looks and could pop at a big number if Rene Goulet provides a sharp drive.

    Race 11 (8:10 PM PST)

1-Cut A Rug (4-1)-Plano steers, his choice over #6, and he usually gets the most out of this 7-year-old who needs the right set-up to win. Drawing the rail should help and hopefully won't be over bet.
2-Daniel's Son (5/2)-Drops to a soft spot and Cutting gets the assignment. Should get an efficient trip and this race probably goes through the 5-year-old.

    Race 12 (8:30 PM PST)

2-Powderhouse (5/2)-Plano has 2 entries (2-8) in the race and he isn't driving either so Lemoyne Svendsen gets the call. Has been in good form and now drops to the level of its last win which came 3 back. This is a logical choice and will probably be bet hard.
6-Helen's Girl (3-1)-Snagged 4 straight wins and its form has tailed off in the last 3 starts. Drops and beat better than this 4 back and could return to winning ways here. Will respect chances as this was Cutting's pick over #3 & #5.

    0.20 Pick 4

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#1 Capitvating Star Nothing but some brief forward ability through two route starts, but he showed a little pace in the debut run in December and might appreciate a more freewheeling approach at this short trip.
#4 Gus's Dream World He's another who needs a big step forward if he's going to land this, but the surface switch offers a little hope for improvement, and this doesn't feel like the deepest spot.
#10 Sunny Sassicaia He has been able to get past a few horses in those first two starts, but he hasn't been a serious threat yet and might be relegated to another underneath share today.
Race Summary Captivating Star gets back to the turf where he showed some solid pace in the debut run, and that route try might translate better at this sprint trip today -- things to like in a modest race.
    Fair Grounds - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#7 Helaire Think some of his previous races might be a bit better than they look at first glance, and then he was just pretty flat last time out. Wondering if he might get back to something better while facing an easier group than he has seen in some time.
#6 Half Again Reliable spying type should be in another good spot today, and he ran well on the hike last time out and doesn't seem overmatched right back.
#2 Drewmazing He scored nicely off the claim to earn this class hike for a team that has been doing good work so far this season, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him win right back with better.
Race Summary Helaire won a couple races here last year in allowance company and has maybe been in waters that are just a bit too deep in recent starts. Thinking this group gives him some bounce-back potential.
    Fair Grounds - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#15 Need a Bit of Luck Almost sure that she'll need to find another spot to debut while drawn out on the AE list, but I wouldn't be shocked to see this one make some noise at first asking when she's able to run.
#11 Alexis Rose She finished up well enough in the turf debut to think she might be one of the finishing threats today in a race that could be calling out for one.
#5 Big Trouble She spied and finished well in the debut run and might be able to sustain her move a bit better after hitting the top that day. Obvious player.
Race Summary Need a Bit of Luck will need just that to get in this one from a wide draw on the also-eligible list, but I think Alexis Rose and Big Trouble look like the logical players in the main body.

Race 2 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $65000 Class Rating: 88

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES THREE YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 122 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 4 BONAQUA 9/5
    # 3 VEGAS CONDO 6/1
    # 6 SHOW CARD 8/5

I think BONAQUA is a very good choice. Has earned solid Equibase speed figs in dirt sprint races in the past. Hard to pass on this filly with Prat in the irons. She has been running soundly and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this field. VEGAS CONDO - She must be given consideration given the quite good speed numbers. The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a turnaround for this filly. SHOW CARD - The speed fig of 73 from her most recent race looks quite good in here. Is tough not to look at based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been formidable - 73 avg - of late.

FOR NATIVE FOUR YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE FEBRUARY 18 AND WHICH HAVE STARTED FOR A CLAIMING PRICE OF $8,000 OR LESS. WEIGHT, 120 LBS. 4# A CLASFS.$4,000 Y DEBTS ALLOWED 4 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $4,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 4 JOSHUAN ELTERRIBLE 3/1
    # 2 CRISOLITA 3/1
    # 5 GALACTOR 2/1

I like JOSHUAN ELTERRIBLE here. This horse with Rivera in the saddle makes him a definite contender. Will most likely go to the lead and may never look back. I think having Rivera ride this horse is a smart selection. GALACTOR - Will almost certainly come out very solid - I have liked the way this horse has moved promptly to the front end recently.

Golden Gate Fields - Race #1 - Post: 1:15pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,500 Class Rating: 75

    Rating:

    #1 UNION HEIRESS (ML=7/2)

UNION HEIRESS - This filly is in fine physical condition, having run a nice race on Jan 20th, finishing third. This filly should improve after adding Lasix in the last race and getting it again today.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SHANA MADEL (ML=9/5), #3 SOLO SOLATAIRE (IRE) (ML=5/2), #2 PARTYATTHEMOONTOWR (ML=9/2),

SHANA MADEL - Doesn't appear to be in a strong situation in today's event. SOLO SOLATAIRE (IRE) - Awfully hard to wager on this horse when she hasn't been showing any signs of life of late.

    Fair Grounds - Race #3 - Post: 1:45pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $57,000 Class Rating: 67

    Rating:

    #2 MONSIEUR CANDY (ML=5/1)
    #7 SPRINGTOWN (ML=6/1)

MONSIEUR CANDY - My handicapping 'sense' tells me to watch out for this horse in this affair SPRINGTOWN - Ran last time out against a higher rated class of horses at Fair Grounds. The move down the class scale should suit him well. This beautiful animal has a lot of class. A good sign in a grass race like we have today.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #10 SUNNY SASSICAIA (ML=4/1), #1 CAPTIVATING STAR (ML=9/2), #6 DR SPECK (ML=6/1),

SUNNY SASSICAIA - Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance contests lately. Doubtful to see him doing it in today's event either. I think this morning-line favorite needs this race under his belt to start getting back into shape. CAPTIVATING STAR - Didn't show me enough early zip in the route clash for me to back him in today's sprint event. 9/2 odds isn't enough for this thoroughbred when looking at the most recent outings. DR SPECK - Never really did much at all in the last race on Jan 27th. Hard to play today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #2 MONSIEUR CANDY to win. Have to have odds of at least 6/5 or better though
