Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 2/25/24

    February 25, 2024
    Jeff Siegel’s 1/ST Glance: Santa Anita – Friday, February 25, 2024

    RACE 1

    4-MOODY JIM (IRE)
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • Three time winner over the Santa Anita course,
    • Drops a level below his claiming price, well spotted.
    • Prefers to settle and kick home; needs a solid pace.

Others to consider: 2-Comradery (Ire); 5-Honos Man.

    RACE 2

    5-MOTORCADE
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • Realistic class drop to the bottom rung following a layoff.
    • Earned better than par speed figures for this class level.
    • Healthy work tab should have him plenty fit for top try.

    Others to consider: 1-Mobe Town.

    RACE 3

    3-ANMER HALL
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Was a clever winner last summer in a restricted $32,000 claimer.
    • Returns protected in a sign of confidence by new connections.
    • Lands the stable’s go-to rider Rispoli, solid fit on speed figures.

Others to consider: 5-Im a Lucky Man.

    RACE 4

    4-CRIMSON ROSE
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Genuine and consistent; earned a career top figure in last win.
    • Enjoys the lead but can stalk and pounce if race flow dictates.
    • Never worse than second in three starts over the local dirt strip.

    Others to consider: none.

    RACE 5

    4-MS BO J
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Third in both starts with solid speed figures, adds blinkers today.
    • Best of the known element and projects to be on or near the lead.
    • Vulnerable facing a good filly; Glatt has two newbies to worry about.

Others to consider: 6-Notime For Squalls; 2-Matina.

    RACE 6

    5-LISA’S NONNO
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Beat a similar field at this level as a maiden, so is eligible right back.
    • Glatt horses are running through the roof in the past several weeks.
    • Good tactical speed, likely to inherit and ideal stalking trip outside.

    Others to consider: 4-Big Novel.

    RACE 7

    7-LEYAS CANDY
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Away for 10 months, recent work tab should have him fit enough.
    • Returns as a first time gelding and could be a better this time around.
    • Glatt barn 30 percent with layoffs; but this tough vet may prefer dirt.

Others to consider: 5-Andy Can You Hear Me; 1-Spiritual Advisor.

    RACE 8

    1-MR FABRICATOR
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Third in all three starts with rising numbers; first time two turning.
    • Favorable rail draw, adds blinkers, likely to try gate-to-wire tactics.
    • Pedigree suggests he will handle a mile; nice breeze since raced.

Others to consider: 6-Ignite the Light.

    RACE 9

    4-AG BULLET
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Displayed plenty of promise last year; returns off an 11 month vacation.
    • San Luis Rey Downs work tab is impressive for new trainer Richard Baltas.
    • Projects to enjoy a comfortable stalking trip outside and have her chance.

Others to consider: 2-Gracelund Gray; 10-School Dance.

    RACE 10

    4-CLEMENTS RIDE
    Degree of confidence: B

    • Lightly raced, improving, and shows rising figures with each outing.
    • Lacked room entering the lane, got clear, and finished with energy.
    • Failed as the choice in his last pair but was unlucky, one more chance.

    Others to consider: 6-Travelin’ Show.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

    February 25, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo has a 10-race Sunday night card with the 0.20 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (7:05 PM PST)

2-Gee Wilikers (4-1)-Team Cutting entry needs to be on the point or very close to the leader turning for the wire. Fits with this kind and may do enough to get a winning trip and seal the deal for a picture.
4-Dancin Lance (5/2)-Makes its 4th start for the Juan Pacheco barn and almost wired the field in its last race. Lemoyne Svendsen returns for his 2nd straight drive and does bump up. Willing to use and could go off at longer odds than the morning line. Best to respect, battled Open company here a couple of months ago and took 2 pictures.

    Race 8 (7:25 PM PST)

3-Another Tuff Woman (7/2)-Broke its maiden winning by 17 lengths at 3/5 on 2-16. James Kennedy takes the lines, and this will be a bigger test. May be up to the challenge and hopefully won't be over bet.
4-Made Of Misschief (5/2)-Beat straight NW1 with ease at 1/9 and this will be the 3rd start since 9-16. Like the one above, will meet some older foes but could be posing again. This is Luke Plano's choice over the 3 and 8.
5-Love To Flirt (6-1)-Team Jesse Pacheco had a longshot winner on Friday night and the same could happen here. Has been cashing checks and raced well from the 8-hole last time. Could surprise with a sharp steer.
6-Celebrity Status (9/2)-Team Roland entry steps-up after breaking its maiden in a sharp score form post 7 on 2-16. That picture came in its 13th lifetime start and it was the 3rd race off the bench. The 3-year-old will need a big try to win but should be a square price and the upswing could continue.

    Race 9 (7:45 PM PST)

1-Bettor's Promise (10-1)-The Jesse Pacheco barn might be waking up and Jim Lackey could work a suck-around trip with this old-timer. Will reach for a price, the morning line chalk is 1-39 at CalX.
2-Cenalta Hawk (4-1)-This 5-year-old has 4 starts at the meet and has been sporadic. Does have 1 win in the first race in town and broke at the start in last. Team Plano entry does step-up but shouldn't be out of place if comes with a top effort.
4-Promising Flight (7/5)-Recent form has been dull, and not sure why this 7-year-old merits a 7/5 morning line. Probably best to not completely dismiss but will lean to others with some value.
5-Watchmeneighneigh (5-1)-Svendsen takes a seat, and he knows this mare. With an efficient trip she could be in the hunt. Has the gate speed to get good position and race near the top of the stack, and the short field could help chances.

    Race 10 (8:05 PM PST)

2-Brooklyn Wind Up (10-1)-Finds ways to lose even though she can rally from way back. Nick Roland could get closer to leader early in the mile and get sucked around. Has been trying hard and may not be 25-1 again tonight but should be a large price.
3-Rockin The Dragon (5/2)-Did beat this kind 3 back. James Kennedy can race near the top of the stack again and end with the same result.
5-Prom Queen (8/5)-A logical choice, comes back versus similar after rolling the back half in 56.3 to pass them all at even money. Has been bet hard in the last 2 and will look for the same again. The question is if this mare can win 2 in a row.

    0.20 Pick 4

    2,4/3,4,5,6/1,2,4,5/2,3,5

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#1 Miz Mastery She races off the bench after the even debut at Saratoga last year, and she'll add Lasix while finding an easier group today. Show horse from last summer has been decent with LA-breds this season.
#4 A Lil Psychotic Cutback pace should still find a decent spot near the top with this group, but she has already had a couple chances with this kind of company and may lack some of the upside a couple others have.
#7 Mor Mor Music Nothing so far through two starts, but she's coming out of an OK special weight race on the turf and presumably has a little upside while trying this much softer bunch.
Race Summary Miz Mastery is back in what is probably a pretty reasonable spot off the layoff, and I'm hoping she's still got a little something to offer in a race that won't require a star to win it.
    Fair Grounds - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#6 Calicoco He'll look for a third straight and fourth score out of five starts since switching to the grass, and he has some solid pace in a race where all the logical players want to run from much farther back. Tougher test today in open company, but let's see if he can carry these the whole way, too.
#9 Dapper Dude He was third when facing similar here earlier this season, and he has since tried stakes company and a dirt route. Wouldn't surprise to see him outrun his price while getting back in a better spot.
#7 Brown Liquor Man He's going to get a bit of a class test after facing cheaper claiming company in all four starts on his way to that graduation run here last time out, but he has some positional pace and should be able to keep the top choice in his sights.
Race Summary Calicoco moves out of LA-bred company, but he looks likely to control the pace again today, and that might make him dangerous while trying tougher in sharp form.
    Fair Grounds - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#12 Lil Woadie Not much to write home about in the recent form, but he might be worth another look while sprinting at this sort of level after the flat route try last out.
#4 Vero Campone Honest finisher turned in a good first effort against winners last time out, and he's a threat right back if he can just hold that form again today.
#5 Calibrachoamatters He has some tables to turn out of that last one, but he might be capable of something just a tiny bit better this time around and should be in the mix early on.
Race Summary Lil Woadie has a couple of moderately intriguing sprint running lines on his page, and there may be just enough speed and prompting types lined up to give him a fair chance to rally.

Race 5 - Maiden Claiming - 350y on the Dirt. Purse: $11500 Class Rating: 66

QUARTER HORSE 350Y, FOR MAIDENS, THREE AND FOUR YEARS OLD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 126 LBS.; FOUR YEAR OLDS, 128 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 5 JESS RIDEAWAY 5/2
    # 9 SEPARATE TRAFFIC 9/2
    # 8 TIPPIN BAC A CORONA 8/1

I think JESS RIDEAWAY is a decent choice. With Reyes aboard him, this gelding ought to be able to break out early in this competition. Ought to be given consideration based on the strong speed rating put up in the last outing. Is tough not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been decent - 54 avg - of late. SEPARATE TRAFFIC - Has performed very well as of late in short races, posting a nifty 57 avg Equibase Speed Fig. Has quite good early speed and will most likely fare admirably versus this group of horses in this race. TIPPIN BAC A CORONA - Must be given consideration given the class of races run lately. Has performed well as of late in short races, posting a nifty 54 avg Equibase speed fig.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 8 SAWASDEE 3/1
    # 5 ANDY CAN U HEAR ME 4/1
    # 2 GYPSY TEARS 8/1

SAWASDEE is the most respectable bet in this race. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding. Has been running soundly lately and will almost certainly be close to the lead early on. ANDY CAN U HEAR ME - Ought to be considered a solid choice on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. Ran a very solid last race.

    Laurel - Race #2 - Post: 12:59pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 76

    Rating:

    #6 SANSA ARIEL (ML=5/1)
#3 FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD (ML=6/1)
    #4 BABY SOX (ML=8/5)
    #8 LA SAMANA LAURA (ML=8/1)

SANSA ARIEL - Mena comes to ride again after getting to know the filly in the last event. FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD - Gorham has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to be wary of the longer priced half. BABY SOX - This campaigner coming off a solid race in the last thirty days is a strong challenger in my humble opinion. Possibly a peak effort for this filly today. Been getting closer at the finish with each recent start. Three consecutive improved speed figs (41-62-87) make this animal a strong contender. LA SAMANA LAURA - This speed freak should be aided by this shorter distance. Looking at today's Equibase class figure, this thoroughbred is encountering an easier field than last time around the track at Laurel.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 DEVIL PAYS IN GOLD (ML=3/1),

DEVIL PAYS IN GOLD - If you keep betting these sort of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be frustrated frequently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #6 SANSA ARIEL to win if you can get odds of 5/1 or more

    Fonner Park - Race #7 - Post: 4:12pm - Claiming - 4.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $5,600 Class Rating: 76

    Rating:

    #4 BRUIN MAGIC (ML=9/2)

BRUIN MAGIC - With a big class drop in class figure points from his October 27th race at Columbus. Based on that valuable data, I will give this one the edge. Based on the TrackMaster data I've reviewed, this gelding should run well off the vacation. This animal has increased his speed ratings from a fig of 49 to 71 to 76 in succession.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 PRIME CODE (ML=3/1), #2 CAJUN BERTI (ML=7/2), #6 DAVE (ML=4/1),

PRIME CODE - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked sharp of late. When checking today's Equibase class figure, he will have to record a better rating than in the last race to battle in this dirt sprint. CAJUN BERTI - This gelding hasn't had any positive outcomes in sprint races in the last couple of months. DAVE - Hasn't finished in the money in any sprint affairs of late. Unlikely to see him doing it this time either. Earned a somewhat easily forgotten speed rating last time out in a $3,500 Claiming race on July 29th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that rating. Improbable that this entrant will be at his best this time around off the extended time off. Maybe next time.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - BRUIN MAGIC - The data here is quite simple. This thoroughbred has a lot of pace, so I'd calculate that he sets the early fractions, with a chance to lead wire to wire.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #4 BRUIN MAGIC on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: 4 with [6,7]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    Pass
    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: Pass
