Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    February 26, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool begins in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

1-Kingsville 7/2-This level might be too tough, but the Di Domenico trainee is usually in the hunt. Knows how to battle, plus drawing the rail could make a big difference. George Brennan should be no worse than in the pocket around the first turn and just might trip out at a fair price.
2-Leonidas A 3-1-This looks like the spot for the veteran to pick up the first win of the year. Drops and should handle this group. But recent form has been dull albeit versus better and this 9-yr-old shouldn’t be close to 3-1 if all systems are "go".

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Seth Hanover 3-1-This isn’t my favorite horse but when he takes a rare picture these days it is by getting on the point and not looking back. Tonight, George Brennan should be able to protect the rail and not have to blister the 6-year-old off the gate. If that happens, this will give him a decent shot at a picture.
4-Reining Deo 2-1-Has finished a beaten 2nd in the last 2 starts in the claiming series. But since returning from Monticello has faced 2 tough winners who are not involved tonight. The post draw could work for Matt Kakaley to duck and look to sweep by late in the mile.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

2-Coaches Corner (2-1)-This looks like a 2-horse battle and the Bartlett-Engblom team draws inside and is probably a little quicker off the gate than #5. Has been close to taking a picture in the last 3 starts and could very well start a new win streak tonight.
5-Semi Tough (5/2)-Winner of 2 in a row was used a couple of times to win when bumped up to this condition on
2-19. Yannick Gingras will be aggressive, and the Burke trainee should be a player at the wire with a fair trip.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-San Domino A (4-1)-Hasn't sealed the deal in 5 starts this year. Probably didn't really deserve to cash the top check except in one race. Gingras has the rail, and we will see if that makes a difference. Will respect chances but can't fully trust.
3-RJ Sports Image (5/2)-This is another who is 0-5 and not off to a great start after banking over $125k in 2023. Makes the first start for the hot Alexander barn. Might wake-up with a change of scenery and with Brennan steering.
6-Hurrikanekingjames (7/2)-Winner in 2 of the last 3 races, and the last start was at this level, deserves some respect despite starting outside of main foes. Should be a solid price, and Jordan Stratton could provide a sharp steer and be the best in the late going.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,2/1,4/2,5/1,3,6

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Mahoning Valley - Race #5
    Picks Notes
#6 Awesome Enough His form went the wrong way through those last few starts, but he turned in a couple races here earlier this season that would definitely keep him in the frame with these. Hoping for a bounce back at a midrange price.
#8 Max Foster He's the one to beat right back after a good first local effort at this price, but he was 4/5 that day and figures to take at least a little bit of cash again today.
#10 The Equinest He should be a nice number to see if we can get him past some of the fading players for a share of this late. Better stuff fits OK.
Race Summary Awesome Enough and The Equinest look like a couple of potential interesting price players, and I'm hoping to get one of them in the frame with Max Foster, who probably hits hard here if he can hold form.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#4 Moment in the Dark Think he gets the edge in what feels like a really top-heavy race between him and the next guy, but he's got a pace edge on that one and seems dangerous right back on the rise.
#2 Living the Dream He's an honest runner, but I think his form is a bit better going long than at this one-turn trip, and he might be along too late to land this one.
#6 Big Time Flirt He might need a misfire or two if he's going to take this one home, but the two-back run wasn't bad and at least gives his backers hope for upside after the dull route run.
Race Summary Moment in the Dark and Living the Dream seem tough to get past in here, but the former might have a bit more honest sprint form and will get the jump into the lane.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#1 Neechi There is enough speed drawn outside of her to think she might end up in the pocket or otherwise pressing the pace somehow today, and her mild ability to stay on late should serve her well.
#4 Sweet Unique Wouldn't be any shock to see her win this, having never run a bad one through four starts, but she'll likely have to contend with a bit of other pace in the early going today. Capable at a short price.
#2 Pretty Patty She was a bit light for this kind of company earlier in the meet, but she rises again for the new barn after rattling off a couple easy scores with cheaper, and it wouldn't be a total shock to see her grab a piece of this.
Race Summary Neechi has a little quality to her and has been competitive when facing this type in the past, and she should be able to work out a good trip right up near the top while utilizing her mild rating gear.

    Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

    Turf Paradise - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#2 IDA NEEDA DRINK (5-2) Takes the plunge, has little to beat, question of readiness.
#7 SUPER ANNIE (8-5) Upstaged in-money finishes with win, worked in :59 for new barn.
#6 FIRST EMERALD (3-1) New arrival in Evans barn can’t afford another troubled start.
Race Summary IDA NEEDA DRINK takes an all-or-nothing class drop off a 10-month layoff. She shows a series of workouts dating back to July, so there’s cause for some concern. But if she’s right, she should beat this field. Bet to win and place.
    Turf Paradise - Race #2
    Picks Notes
#3 OLIVIA’S CHOICE (6-1) Third behind odds-on winner, gets good set-up, good value play.
#2 POWER INTENTION (8-1) Idle long time, powered clear twice at 5-1/2F, worked in :57.6 for return.
#7 WORK N FLIRT (5-1) Finished first or second in her last four starts, takes class hike.
Race Summary OLIVIA’S CHOICE, a lightly-raced 5-year-old, can stalk and pounce on a projected lively pace and get up in time to win in her second start off the claim. She couldn’t reach the 2-to-5 winner when third last out. Bet to win and place and play a 2-3-7 exacta box.
    Turf Paradise - Race #4
    Picks Notes
#4 MINDSHARE (4-1) Can return quick claim dividend at distance which he’s 4-for-9.
#3 WEAR THE CROWN (8-1) Runs well fresh, has shown passing gear, adds value to gimmicks.
#2 QUARKY (7-2) Survived duel but couldn’t hold off trip-sitting favorite in 4-horse field.
Race Summary MINDSHARE blew a commanding lead in the same spot at 5F off a six-week layoff. His speed will be tested but he posted his top speed figure the last time he ran 4-1/2F, finishing second to Newpark (5-19, $141k), who capped the 2023 season with back-to-back wins. Bet to win and place and play a 2-3-4 exacta box.

    Turf Paradise - Race #2 - Post: 1:22pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $16,500 Class Rating: 84

    Rating:

    #3 OLIVIA'S CHOICE (IRE) (ML=6/1)
    #8 CHARMANT E (ML=8/1)

OLIVIA'S CHOICE (IRE) - Morales rode this horse for the first time last time out and comes right back today. The ROI when Morales and Villamar get together is fantastic. A campaigner coming back this soon after a sharp outing is a good omen. You have to really like that recent race speed fig, 85, which is the top last race rating of this bunch. CHARMANT E - This horse looks like a possible overlay in this field at odds of 8/1. Finished fourth in last race at Turf Paradise but was close at the finish line.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 AMERICAN TSUNAMI (ML=5/2), #4 MICKEY DOBBS (ML=4/1), #7 WORK N FLIRT (ML=5/1),

AMERICAN TSUNAMI - 5/2 odds isn't enough for this participant when scrutinizing the most recent efforts. MICKEY DOBBS - This mare hasn't had any on the board results in sprint races in the last couple months. WORK N FLIRT - Don't feel this questionable contender will make a winning move in today's event. That last speed rating was disappointing when compared with today's class figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 OLIVIA'S CHOICE (IRE) is going to be the play if we are getting 2/1 or better
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [3,8]

    Race 5 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $12200 Class Rating: 76

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JANUARY 26 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 2 FROSTY PAWS 4/1
    # 1 SEA TO AIR 7/2
    # 8 MAX FOSTER 3/1

FROSTY PAWS is my choice. Recent figs for the jockey - 28 win percent - make this horse stand out in this group of horses in this race. Keep this horse in your exotics as Bracho has given backers some double digit gains. Ought to be given consideration here if only for the strong Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last contest. SEA TO AIR - Overall the speed figs of this pony look decent in this contest. Has been running soundly lately and will probably be on or close to the front end early on. MAX FOSTER - Put up a sound speed fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this race.

FOR MAIDENS, FOUR YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $25,000. PENNSYLVANIA BRED CLAIMING PRICE $30,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 1 DREAMWITHINADREAM 2/1
    # 7 CRACK THE CODE 8/1
    # 2 CHASING STARDOM 4/1

I've got to go with DREAMWITHINADREAM. He has very strong class ratings, averaging 81, and has to be carefully examined for this event. Recent numbers for the jockey - 16 win percent - make this gelding stand out in this group. Boasts strong speed figs on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. CRACK THE CODE - Has to be given consideration against this field displaying formidable figs recently and an average speed fig of 67 under similar conditions. CHASING STARDOM - Has to be given a shot versus this group of horses in this race displaying very good figs recently and an average speed rating of 65 under similar conditions. Will almost certainly come out very strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved speedily to the front end recently.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #1 - Post: 12:45pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,500 Class Rating: 69

    Rating:

    #1 LEAVENWORTH (ML=3/1)

LEAVENWORTH - A winning percentage like 35 is outstanding for any jockey/handler duo. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run his best in the 3rd or 4th start back.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 READ THE ROOM (ML=2/1), #3 LOTS OF MISCHIEF (ML=5/2), #2 PEACEFULPERSUASION (ML=5/1),

READ THE ROOM - A pattern of lessening speed figs 55/49/26 for this entrant. Hasn't been coming close at all lately. Finished fourth in his most recent effort with a substandard speed fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this field. LOTS OF MISCHIEF - Will be hard for this entrant to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underpriced contenders list. PEACEFULPERSUASION - Can't play this vulnerable equine in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance event of late. This less than sharp equine ran a run-of-the-mill speed figure last out. He shouldn't improve and will likely get beat in today's event running that fig.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 LEAVENWORTH is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
