Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 3/10/24

    March 10, 2024
    Jeff Siegel’s 1/ST Glance: Santa Anita – Sunday, March 10, 2024

    RACE 1

    4-PHENOM
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • Overmatched in the Wishing Well Stakes, much easier today.
    • Very fast and needs the lead; appears quickest of the bunch.
    • Two time winner over the local lawn; loves the short distance.

Others to consider: 2-Aventapp; 5-Teen Drama.

    RACE 2

    6-PATRON d’ORO
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Moves up a notch following runaway romp, extra furlong today.
    • Very fast on speed figures but is raised just one level by new barn.
    • Likely a heavy favorite and will crush if he can repeat his last try.

    Others to consider: none.

    RACE 3

    4-RAGING TORRENT
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Flopped in Oklahoma; freshened and working very well for return.
    • Returns to the allowance ranks; switches to grass, can bounce back.
    • Quick enough to inherit an ideal stalking trip, adds Lasix and blinkers.

Others to consider: 6-Charge for Gold; 7-Final Boss.

    RACE 4

    3-ELECTOR
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Claimed by Mark Glatt barn (powerful stats); route-to-spring angle.
    • Very impressive in a recent local breeze, seems ready for a top effort.
    • Has good sprint speed and pace projection looks quite soft and easy.

    Others to consider: 1-Mor Tequila.

    RACE 5

    6-PIONEER PRINCE
    Degree of confidence: B

    • First time gelding drops into a maiden claimer for the first time.
    • Shows the route-to-sprint angle, likely to inherit a stalking spot.
    • Rising speed figures with each outing and exits a strong affair.

    Others to consider: 1-Quintecents; 5-Khantaro d’Oro.

    RACE 6

    4-DESMOND DOSS
    Degree of confidence: B-

    • Plenty of back class but was a scratch at this level six weeks ago.
    • Must have some issues; sharp class drop seems a bit suspicious.
    • More than good enough to win if he can produce his best effort.

Others to consider: 8-Minister Shane; 9-Jamming Eddie.

    RACE 7

    6-ZONA VERDE
    Degree of confidence: B+

    • Been very unlucky of late but can win with a good start and clean trip.
    • Was a close fourth over course and trip two back despite a poor break.
    • Lacked a clear path in recent turf sprint but flew home when clear late.

Others to consider: 5-Medoro; 2-Mo Fox Givin.

    RACE 8

    8-FINAL STORM
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • Was scratched Feb. 17 and did not have a workout for eight days.
    • First time in a maiden claimer despite a strong figure in last outing.
    • Will show plenty of speed against this group if brings his best stuff.

    Others to consider: none.

    RACE 9

    4-FEROCIOUSLY
    Degree of confidence: C+

    • First off the claim for Sadler; stretches out to a distance he may like.
    • Likely to employ gate to wire tactics, may be the quickest of the quick.
    • Sprint numbers are okay; early speed does very well over this track.

    Others to consider: 6-Montana; 9-Canelo.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

    March 10, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo has a 12-race card with the 0.20 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 9. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (7:45 PM PST)

2-Handsome Harvey (4-1)-There are not many in this field who have been capable of beating Open company. That's the case with Harvey but gets a post edge on tougher foes and has been racing well.
7-Dancin Lance (5-1)-Needs the right trip to take a picture but has shown the ability to beat this kind. Jim Lackey takes over for Luke Plano and that should help the price. Can upset if this pilot can get him to the lead or very close to it at the top of the lane.
9-Kamara (5/2)-Winner of 2 straight versus this kind looked even better in the last race. Assigned with post 9 but it probably won't matter if as good as last week.

    Race 10 (8:05 PM PST)

1-Rockinscience (3-1)-Team Cutting entry won last time and now moves up in class. Will likely be rolling late coming off cover and there should be an honest pace.
2-JP Jetty (7/2)-Bumps up like the one above. Has been in the hunt and should get a cozy trip with this post draw.
7-Contemporay Legend (8-1)-James Kennedy steers his own and could be aggressive off the gate. Also moves up and can makes some noise if lands in a good early seat.
8-Mystery Dragon (5/2)-Lemoyne Svendsen picks #2 so Plano gets the call. Has finished a very close 2nd in the last 2 and also bumps up. The 10-year-old knows how to win and won't be ignored at the windows but does need a sharp steer to get the job done.

    Race 11 (8:25 PM PST)

2-Go With Flo (3-1)-Recent form has been dull but faces a new crew tonight and a fast track could help. Looking for a strong try and thinking the price could be better than the morning line.
5-Rockin Sage (6-1)-Gets some class relief and like the one above, could be facing a beatable field. The price is right to take a swing.
6-DT Pet Attack (8-1)-Took the long way around and hung in there on a track rated good. Should fit with this kind and can cash the top check at a price with a sharp steer.

    Race 12 (8:45 PM PST)

1-Omadome (6-1)-Recent form has tailed off for the Team Cutting trainee but this could be wake-up time. Should be a player if avoids a tardy start and is worth the risk at the morning line odds.
4-Biggessecondshot (4-1)-Gets some class relief and a new pilot in Lackey. Beat a bit better than this 3 back and should be confidently driven. Honest fractions would help as this Bob Johnson entry roll by foes late in the mile.

    0.20 Pick 4

    2,7,9/1,2,7,8/2,5,6/1,4

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#6 Captivating Star Expected a touch better from him last time out, but he went pretty evenly after some mild trouble, and I wouldn't be shocked to see him bring something a little sharper today. Price might be slightly better.
#8 Springtown He woke up in a big way when getting over to the turf for the first time last out, and he finished a few lengths in front of the top choice that day. One of the obvious ones.
#3 Chaste One That solid debut rally might set him up for better today, and there isn't a ton of serious finishing form lined up in here. Chance to pick them up late.
Race Summary Captivating Star might offer a bit more punch today after getting into a little trouble in his last, and I think the price might be fair enough to give him another look. Think #2 Monsieur Candy has a little appeal, especially if this stays on the main.
    Fair Grounds - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#1 Battalion Strike Might just be the race available to him, but it's interesting that he's back on the main after posting a solid graduation run on the grass last time out. I like that race a bit and think the other players out of there may have flattered his score earlier today.
#4 Lordy Lordy Honest finisher might be along a bit too late in a race without a ton of serious speed, but the overall form is pretty sound after three starts, and holding that baseline effort keeps him in the mix again today.
#7 Angelic Knight Toss the route try and the form is pretty imposing, but he has also been a short price in all three sprint tries against winners and has come up short so far. Capable.
Race Summary Batallion Strike might continue a through theme for today after a handful that he beat last out were entered to run back in today's third race. Thinking he might trip out from the fence.
    Fair Grounds - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#1 Taurean Not a whole lot of imposing form on paper in here, and he made just a mild move in the debut at Delta. He might be sharper this time around and steps up into what feels like a very comfortable spot while doubling the claiming tag.
#7 Catalina Day He's fast enough to find a decent spot into the turn, but he does have a tendency to give away ground late in his races, and that could leave him vulnerable late. On the other hand, there might not be a whole lot of serious finishing punch coming home behind him.
#9 Put It Back Dave He moved up when trying this level at Delta last time out and turning back around one turn, and he might have enough pace to find a good spot again today while making his local debut.
Race Summary Race feels a lot more like a Louisiana $10,000 than a $20,000 race, so I think you can look around a bit for someone slightly less logical. Taurean has some upside off the debut run for half this price, and I wonder if he'll sustain his mild move better today.

    Santa Anita - Race #6 - Post: 3:39pm - Optional Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $67,000 Class Rating: 97

    Rating:

    #8 MINISTER SHANE (ML=5/1)
    #9 JAMMING EDDY (ML=4/1)
    #1 TRINIDAD (ML=10/1)
    #3 LEFT HAND MAN (ML=10/1)
    #7 MAN O ROSE (ML=8/1)

MINISTER SHANE - This gelding is in good form. Ran third on February 10th. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a comeback. JAMMING EDDY - Racing at a similar level as last race on January 13th at Santa Anita. I think Barocio has found a good spot for him, and I like his chances in today's race. This gelding earned a strong speed rating of 103 in his last race. That rating should be strong enough to win this time. TRINIDAD - This gelding is in superb physical condition right now. Ran third last time out and comes back soon. Like the way this gelding's finish positions keep getting better. That's a sure sign of improving form. Gelding was in versus 'open company' on February 9th and should find this group easier to deal with. That recent bullet 48.0 work shows that this gelding is ready for a top performance today. This gelding should be in tip-top shape, this far into his form cycle. LEFT HAND MAN - This colt is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Glatt. Could be a potential overlay in today's race at odds of 10/1. Finished sixth in last race at Santa Anita but was close at the finish line. Had a solid closing move in the last race, running the last quarter in less than 25 seconds. A similar race today, and it's straight to the winner's circle. MAN O ROSE - Gelding's last race was against tougher open company. He's in with easier 'state breds' today. Strong return on investment for this jock and conditioner duo.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 DESMOND DOSS (ML=3/1), #2 CRYPTO CRAZE (ML=4/1), #5 DONT FIGHT THE FED (ML=8/1),

DESMOND DOSS - On a downward spiraling sequence. Equibase speed figs keep lessening. Should have at least finished in the money in the last 60 days in a sprint contest to be any kind of value at low odds in a sprint. CRYPTO CRAZE - The rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this horse as a questionable challenger. DONT FIGHT THE FED - No picnic to bet on this vulnerable equine this time around. Make him show you something in a sprint race before you bet on him in a race of 6 1/2 furlongs. Doesn't seem inspiring to me after the lack of any sort of closing talent on Sep 8th.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #8 MINISTER SHANE to win if we can get at least 6/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,8]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    [1,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] Total Cost: $36
    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: [8,9] with [1,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] Total Cost: $24

    SUPER HI 5 WAGERS:
    [1,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] with [1,3,7,8,9] Total Cost: $72

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 5 MEDORO 2/1
    # 4 ANTIFONA (FR) 5/2
    # 1 VISUALLY 12/1

I have to support MEDORO here. This filly is a solid choice based on her earnings per start in turf route events. Has posted solid Equibase Speed Figures in turf route races in the past. With one of the most competitive jockeys in terms of dividends at the window, don't count this filly out. ANTIFONA (FR) - Has to be given a shot here on the basis of the numbers in the speed section alone. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Sadler running at this distance are the top in this group of horses. VISUALLY - Has been running soundly lately and will most likely be up near the lead early on. Is worth looking at and may be a wager - strong Equibase speed figs (87 average) at today's distance and surface lately.

    Race 3 - Claiming - 7.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $22000 Class Rating: 74

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $8,000

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 4 JAMES GANG 8/5
    # 2 NORFIE 7/2
    # 3 LAST SHIFT 5/2

I've got to go with JAMES GANG. Overall the speed figs of this pony look very good in this race. Looks competitive versus this field and ought to be one of the front-runners. Could beat this group of horses given the 71 Equibase Speed Figure posted in his last outing. NORFIE - Could beat this group of horses in this race given the 74 speed figure posted in his last outing. He should definitely be given a chance given the very good speed figures. LAST SHIFT - Have to believe this one will do well following the quick comeback. Has run admirably when racing a dirt sprint race.

    Fair Grounds - Race #5 - Post: 2:45pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 89

    Rating:

    #8 HAMMERIN AAMER (ML=9/2)
    #5 ZAICI (ML=3/1)
    #2 I WILL STAND (ML=6/1)
    #4 KEYS INCLUDED (ML=9/2)

HAMMERIN AAMER - This entrant ran out of the money at Fair Grounds in the last race on a track listed as good. He should improve right here without the slop. Another way to assign class is earnings per start. This entrant has the highest in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the end. ZAICI - This horse looks good today. Hasn't done much lately, but did win a $5,000 Claiming race on December 14th. Wilson brings him back again. I advocate you stay with this strong horse. I WILL STAND - Richard brings him right back. I propose you stay with this hot gelding. This horse likes to win at different tracks. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. The 87 latest race speed fig looks good in the TrackMaster PPs. KEYS INCLUDED - This gelding is in fine form, having run a nice race on February 18th, finishing third. This thoroughbred absolutely loves this track. All his victories have been here at Fair Grounds.

Vulnerable Contenders: #11 CLASSIC KING (ML=5/1),

CLASSIC KING - Finished sixth last time. Would have to perk up to be there at the wire in today's event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - I WILL STAND - Last two races this gelding has shown a steady increase in his speed numbers. This steed is a top contender against these thoroughbreds today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #8 HAMMERIN AAMER is going to be the play if we are getting 5/1 or better
    EXACTA WAGERS: Pass
