Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    March 25, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card to begin the week. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

2-Semi Tough (2-1)-The Borgata Series goes on for a while and that should be factored into handicapping. This veteran raced from the back last week and came 4th from post 6. That was probably a breather for the 8-yr-old and should bring its A-game for a big Series try after drawing post 2 tonight.
4-Rocknroll Runa A 9/2-Comes off a win in Leg 1, and this is a bigger test. But Mark MacDonald will probably try the same plan. He should have the pedal down and could end up in the pocket again. If so, Runa could pull off another upset.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-This Is The Plan (2-1)-Couldn't catch a well-rated Covered Bridge last week and that was the 1st start since 11-27. Will single and expect Yannick Gingras to make the most of the 1-hole and be able to handle the program chalk #4-Did It Myway.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

3-Anothrmastrpiece N (2-1)-Appears to be in race ready form and now makes the 4th start off the bench. Bumps up after wiring the field in last and knows how to beat this kind as well.
5-Gingras Beach (9/2)-Will need its best to beat the one above who could get the jump and land on top. Gingras seems to get the most out of his "name sake". Will use at a square price and could get another pocket ride behind the morning line choice.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

5-Prince McCardle N (8-1)-Comes off a decent try from post 8 in the 1st race at YR since 12-18. Jordan Stratton could leave again and land on the point or in the pocket without burning much gas. Looks like a useable price shot that gets needed post relief and could finish the best of all.
7-Ginger Tree Pete (7/2)-This is an interesting race and from the inside this might be the morning line favorite. Jason Bartlett sticks, and he has gate speed to use to land in a close-up seat. Wouldn't want to use at a short price but is difficult to leave off the ticket.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,4/1/3,5/5,7
    Total Bet=$8

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Mahoning Valley - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#3 G T Three Fifty He's probably not much of a price again today, but I just think he's too good for these if he's able to hold any of that recent form. His speed keeps him close, and his ability to relax just a bit and spy makes him the right one.
#1 Mutual Confidence He doesn't seem out of the question while trying this level after spending most of the last year in claiming company -- he might get a decent run while saving ground in behind the leaders.
#6 Moester He comes out of a tough race and wouldn't be any kind of surprise today. He gets his best chance if the top choice gets caught up with the more committed frontrunners.
Race Summary G T Fifty Three looks for a fourth straight score after proving too good for the locals in those last three, and he should be in line for another perfect trip.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#4 Bank Buster While there are a couple others in here with some hints of speed, the front end is there for her taking again after running what would have been a winning race most times around in the last one.
#5 Near Perfect Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here, but she's going to give away that early edge to the top choice and might have too much to do if that one doesn't take early heat.
#2 Lemon Mousse She's back off the bench with blinkers for this, and she might find herself in a good spot while not too far off the top choice. Possible if she's ready.
Race Summary Bank Buster has a big claim on this after running a really nice one last time out, and she should be able to control the tempo again here. Wouldn't mind taking my chances with her as a single.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#1 Ghost of Londyn He hasn't been much sprinting so far, but the debut wasn't all bad, and he at least showed some signs of interest when sent long last out. Maybe he can strike with playable form turning back.
#2 C V Dynamic He's an obvious player who has landed a lot of underneath shares already, but it's tough to argue with the trip he figures to get today. Should have every chance.
#4 Swayback Mobil He made a brief move in the debut run that kept him on my radar, but he hasn't followed it up with much in a few starts since. He was in the frame with the likely chalk a couple starts back.
Race Summary Ghost of Londyn needs better than we have seen so far, but maybe he'll be a player with route pace cutting back in a race where the likely favorite is getting short on excuses.

    Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#2 STORMSACOMIN (9-5) Been facing better, holds tactical advantage, strictly the one to beat.
#6 MR SEEKER (12-1) Can be excused for latest, had okay workouts prior, solid connections.
#3 HELLO MR COPELAND (3-1) Finished behind 1-to-9 fave in third in improved MSW effort last out.
Race Summary STORMSACOMIN gets class relief, figures up close throughout with second-time Lasix and should live up to favoritism in his second start this year. Bet to win and place and play 2-3 and 2-6 exactas.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#8 IRON LOTUS (3-1) Can make good use of her speed in this spot at proven distance.
#2 SARA’S SAPPHIRE (5-1) Bid to stretch lead and just missed as the fave in long sprint at Delta.
#6 DERBY DAY LASSIE (4-1) Opened long lead and earned top speed fig in romp off similar rest.
Race Summary IRON LOTUS carried her speed to two wins and a second in her last three starts at 5-1/2F. She was overtaken by the even-money favorite last out in her seasonal debut. She can use her speed well in this spot from the outside post. Bet to win and place.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #4
    Picks Notes
#1 GOSPEL BUZZ (15-1) Likes Will Rogers, won an allowance with Pusac a year ago, price attached.
#2 RACE DAY REBAL (8-5) Second to repeater two back, late rush in comeback sprint, one to beat.
#3 CHEROKEE LEGACY (5-1) Took the money in six-horse field and faded at one mile.
Race Summary GOSPEL BUZZ is 2-for-7 at the track while his rivals are a combined 0-for-19. He draws the rail and comes off a useful return from a three-month layoff, seeking to turn the tables on a couple of the same rivals. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2 exacta box.

FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE STARTED FOR $16,000 OR LESS AND WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES OR CLAIMING PRICE $25,000 AND WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. WEIGHT, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE FEBRUARY 25 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $25,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 9 JEWELS IN THE BAY 9/2
    # 4 PROFESSOR KOOL 3/1
    # 7 CARBONITE 5/1

JEWELS IN THE BAY is my choice. Could best this group of horses based on the speed figure - 94 - of his last effort. Recent numbers for the jockey - 24 win percent - make this gelding stand out in this field. PROFESSOR KOOL - Displays the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 77 Equibase Speed Fig which is one of the most favorable in this field. As of late Vargas has been hot which may give the edge to this colt. CARBONITE - Demonstrates the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 77 speed rating which is one of the best in this field.

    Turf Paradise - Race #5 - Post: 3:25pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $16,000 Class Rating: 72

    Rating:

    #7 FINNLEY'S KITTEN (ML=9/2)
    #1 NOT NOW I'M BIZZIE (ML=3/1)
    #9 DORITA'S HAPPY (ML=4/1)

FINNLEY'S KITTEN - When Rosales gives Orozco a leg up on any thoroughbred, you know that with their win percent you have at least a fighting chance. Just check out her recent figure, 72. That one fits well in this field. NOT NOW I'M BIZZIE - Last time this mare ran today's trip she got a speed fig that would probably win today's race. Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this horse has the highest Equibase speed figure for the distance/surface. The September 30th affair at Golden Gate Fields was at a class level of (81). Dropping down the class scale significantly, so she should be in a good spot to take this race. DORITA'S HAPPY - The morning line odds on this mare are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of trainer Hernandez. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. Great average class rating on this horse. Should have the capability to run well on the turf. Stretching a thoroughbred out to a route after two sprints is a classic conditioning move.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 M G BIG MARIA (ML=7/2), #6 FIXYURHAIRUPRETTY (ML=5/1), #4 PANCAKES AND BEER (ML=6/1),

M G BIG MARIA - Tough to put any money on this filly on the top end. Likes to hit the board though. FIXYURHAIRUPRETTY - Just don't think she is worth it at the given odds. PANCAKES AND BEER - Speed ratings of 68/49/45 are started the wrong way. When examining today's class figure, she will have to register a much better speed fig than last time out to battle in this turf route.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 FINNLEY'S KITTEN is the play if we get odds of 7/2 or better
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,7]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    Box [1,7,9] Total Cost: $6

Will Rogers Downs - Race #7 - Post: 3:57pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 73

    Rating:

    #8 WILD WING (ML=5/1)
    #10 PRIX DE WEST (ML=4/1)

WILD WING - Looking at the information on all of these ponies, this is the only one to stalk. Worth a serious look at this thoroughbred. Quinonez comes to saddle up after getting to know the gelding in the last event. I like when a horse has dropped in class at least five pts like this one did in the last race and then runs against a similar field right back. Buehrer must've found the right level. PRIX DE WEST - Last time around the track, finished fourth on a muddy track at Delta Downs. Expect better today.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 FRIDAYNIGHTSOLDIER (ML=5/2), #3 PROFESSIONAL GRADE (ML=5/1), #4 HEXCEL (ML=8/1),

FRIDAYNIGHTSOLDIER - This probable favorite probably needs at least one race to get back into shape. Skip him today. PROFESSIONAL GRADE - Hard to play at 5/1 odds after the two most recent showings.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #8 WILD WING on the win end if we get at least 6/5 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [8,10]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:

    Race 1 - Maiden - 220y on the Dirt. Purse: $22000 Class Rating: 66

QUARTER HORSE 220Y, FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 8 RUTH D 5/1
    # 3 WRS APOLLITICAL GAL 5/2
    # 4 WRS MIRROR IMAGE 3/1

I think RUTH D is a formidable choice. Must be given consideration here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of respectable win percentage - 26 percent - at this distance & surface. There is a competitive chance that this entry's late pace will improve now going off Lasix. WRS APOLLITICAL GAL - Has performed quite well recently in short races, posting a nifty 66 avg speed figure. Put up a quite good speed figure last time out. WRS MIRROR IMAGE - Stroud has this filly racing well and is a quite good pick based on the competitive speed figures earned in short races recently. Vaunts formidable speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group.
