    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Mahoning Valley - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#6 Back Up Ghost She handled the dirt at Belterra in her debut last summer, so the surface switch from Turfway doesn't pose a big worry, and she steps up to try winners in a race with a few forward players who might keep things honest.
#2 Cheru She looks toughest of those forward players after staying on well with allowance company last time out, and this is a reasonable spot for her after the romping graduation win two starts back for the same price. One of the ones in a top heavy race.
#3 R B's Big Moment She wouldn't be a total shock while making her local debut with a Laurel graduation run to her name last time out, but I still feel like one of the top two will land this.
Race Summary Back Up Ghost has the ability to get past horses late which might serve her well in a race with a few potentially pace and pressing types lined up. Think she'll stack up fine here.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#6 Magic Palace She comes out of a good race and is capable of something better, and I think she's in the frame here if she can get back to the November try while making the second start off a brief break.
#5 Honey Bella She's another who is probably able to bring an improved run today, and her tactical pace should keep her in a good spot from the break. Playable.
#1 She's Crafty Honest finisher just couldn't get past late in the last one, but I worry she's going to leave herself too much to do in another relatively small group. Threat at an underlaid price?
Race Summary Magic Palace might offer a midrange price off the flattening run last time out, but I like the move she made before tiring, and she might be tighter today with that one under her belt.
    Mahoning Valley - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#2 Cavaletto He has shown enough positional pace going short to think that he can sit closer than he did in that route run last summer, and he stretches out today going third off the break. Wouldn't want him at too short a price if he gets bet like he did last out.
#6 Pressley Ridge Both career scores came going long, so the stretchout might work in his favor today after a decent but non-threatening sprint try last time around. On the tickets.
#1 Eagle Nest He has run into some tough customers lately, but he tends to get bet and probably meets at least a little bit of pace pressure. He's never going to be a surprise as an open-lengths winner if he gets his way and shakes loose, but demand the right price to see if today's that kind of day.
Race Summary Cavaletto is a pretty strong lean in the finale with a favorable race shape waiting for him, and he might end up in a really perfect spying spot. Think Pressley Ridge has a little appeal at a more playable number, too.

    Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#4 TWO MINUTES APART (9-5) Projects ideal trip in bid to upstage several in-the-money finishes.
#1 EXTRA MONEY (12-1) Exits MSW company, barn on 5-for-23 run with grass routers.
#3 MINTENON (8-5) Two wins and two seconds in last five long-distance tests on the lawn.
Race Summary TWO MINUTES APART found blinkers of little help but he rallied for second twice prior going a route of ground on the turf. He steps up in class but benefits from what should be a lively pace. Bet to win and place.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#2 SMART JOKER (5-2) Winning-type effort in repeat try, tries short sprint, today’s Best Bet.
#3 AWESOME CITY (2-1) Sustained a 4-wide run to win going away on cutback to this distance.
#6 VEGAS PLAYBOY (6-1) Steady check-getter, switches pilots for second start off the claim.
Race Summary SMART JOKER overcame a bumpy start and backstretch duel to take command in the 3-path on the turn, only to get caught at 6-1/2F. He set a near-identical pace to a $12,500 starter allowance on the same card and should benefit from the cutback to a short sprint. Bet to win and place.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#4 DELIZIOSA (15-1) Been back-pedaling in long-distance turf races, encouraged by dirt workout.
#6 KEEP ON ROCKIN (6-5) Looks good on paper but might need to find passing gear.
#1 OPEN SKY (4-1) Disappointed as the favorite last out, but can’t be discounted off prior lines.
Race Summary Taking a longshot stab on DELIZIOSA, who transitions from turf route races and worked in :48.2 for her first start on conventional dirt. She should get plenty of pace to rally into if off-the-pace tactics are employed. Play a 1-4-6 exacta box.

    Race 1 - Claiming - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 71

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE OCTOBER 3, 2023. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 1 WRANGLERED 1/1
    # 4 WHIP 3/1
    # 3 KNIGHT DISRUPTOR 5/1

My choice for this event is WRANGLERED. Ought to be given a shot here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. Bettors should take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group. With a very strong 53 speed figure last time out, will surely be a factor in this competition. WHIP - Has very good Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet in this race. I like the jock on this gelding - strong chance to win the contest. KNIGHT DISRUPTOR - Profitable rider and trainer team, with a +36 return on investment. Looks solid versus this group of horses and will almost certainly be one of the leaders.

    Tampa Bay Downs - Race #8 - Post: 3:49pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 82

    Rating:

    #5 ZAMFIR (ML=3/1)

ZAMFIR - This pony coming off a solid try in the last thirty days is a win candidate in my opinion.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #7 TAPSOLUTION (ML=2/1), #1 HIGH YIELD KITTEN (ML=4/1), #3 MISTER BANJOMAN (ML=9/2),

TAPSOLUTION - This gelding hasn't had any positive efforts in sprint affairs in the last couple of months. HIGH YIELD KITTEN - Should have at least hit the board in the last couple of months in a sprint event to be worth the risk at modest odds in a sprint. MISTER BANJOMAN - Substandard speed fig last race out at Tampa Bay Downs at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this mount will improve too much in today's event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 ZAMFIR on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

    Race 6 - Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $14600 Class Rating: 69

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MARCH 3 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 6 BACK UP GHOST 5/2
    # 2 CHERU 6/5
    # 1 NELL'S BELLS 15/1

BACK UP GHOST is my choice. With a formidable 51 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's affair. With Bracho getting the mount, watch out for this animal. Has to be given a shot here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. CHERU - Shows signs of the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 56 speed figure which is one of the most competitive in this field. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figs of this group in her last contest.

    Parx Racing - Race #9 - Post: 4:20pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 74

    Rating:

    #9 JACK BEANSTALK (ML=8/1)
    #4 CACTUS JACK (ML=5/1)

JACK BEANSTALK - Gelding is a few starts into a return to racing here. Should give a big race today. Last race out, finished seventh in the slop at Parx Racing. Expect better today. CACTUS JACK - This horse's last race was out at Penn National in a race with a class figure of 81. Dropping considerably in class figure this time puts him in a solid position right here in this race. Salvaggio brings him right back. I advise you stay with this hot gelding. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run his best in the 3rd or 4th start back.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 JW'STRICKYMISCHIEF (ML=3/1), #8 STAR WEAVER (ML=4/1), #5 LAZARETTO (ML=6/1),

JW'STRICKYMISCHIEF - Tough to put your dough on the win end of any thoroughbred that finishes second and third as frequently as this entrant does. This gelding recorded a speed rating in his last contest which likely isn't good enough today. STAR WEAVER - In all probability won't make much of an impact this time out. LAZARETTO - This gelding probably won't be right there at the finish.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #9 JACK BEANSTALK on top if we're getting at least 5/2 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,9]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    None
    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: Skip
