    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Thistledown - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#1 Bang a Rang He might be fast enough to stay in the mix early from the inside in a race without a ton of serious early pace, and he's got some upside while getting back on the dirt.
#4 Real Naughty He drilled a special weight group on the rise at Mahoning last out, and he's probably right up on the splits again today with the expected race flow. Capable again.
#6 Mighty Les He'll step up off the $15,000 score at Turfway, but that effort looks competitive if he's able to transfer it locally today. In the mix.
Race Summary Bang a Rang has some appeal here while moving away from the turf, and his only lifetime dirt try produced his graduation run. Enough to like.
    Thistledown - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#6 Stage Name He looks tough today if he's ready to fire fresh, as he cleared those Ohio-bred conditions without much trouble and now steps into open company off the bench. Perfect press if he's ready.
#1 Powerful Moon Not sure this would be a very big exacta, but this one has a little sprint pace from the fence and can bounce back with a better run today. Maybe.
#5 Uneedtocomehome Tactical speed has historically needed a little bit easier for his best, but he held good form off the claim and might be along for a share late.
Race Summary Stage Name isn't meeting the deepest first-level field we're going to see here this meet, and he should be in line for a perfect trip. The layoff is the main question, but I think he's tough today at a modest price.
    Thistledown - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#8 Mission Control He caught Real Naughty last out and was a distant second, but that race might come back tough. Let's see if he can help validate it.
#7 Roll a Quarters Debuter looks ready enough to go at first asking, so take a look on the tote and track. He and the guy just inside of him seem interesting enough on paper to check out.
#1 K C Outwork That tactical pace from the debut might serve him well from the fence today, and it wouldn't be any surprise to see him land this with a step forward off that last one. Capable.
Race Summary Fun race to end the day, but I think Mission Control is worth a look here, especially if Real Naughty stayed in form with another good one today.

    Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

    Parx - Race #2
    Picks Notes
#2 THE FURMANATOR (5-1) Sprung big upset two back, can use her speed well in this spot.
#4 ROAD TO DREAMS (5-1) Won going away the last time she raced after time away.
#6 CEDAR VALLEY (9-5) In good form but short price with 3-40 record and winless mark at 5-1/2F.
Race Summary THE FURMANATOR gave way chasing the runaway odds-on winner in her repeat bid on a sloppy track. She figures up close again but can get the jump on her main rivals at a shorter sprint distance. Play a 2-4-6 exacta box.
    Parx - Race #4
    Picks Notes
#7 MADE BIRDIE (5-1) Should sit good trip in return to long sprint, must improve some to spring upset.
#1 DIVINE ROMANCE (9-5) Earned her top speed figure as the beaten favorite in second start for Ness.
#4 TRUE PHENOMENON (9-2) Bumpy start, wide trip, finished 3 lengths behind ‘Romance.’
Race Summary MADE BIRDIE followed the move of the winning favorite and got up to finish second at 6F in her fourth start at this level and second try with blinkers. She should get ample pace and benefit from the extra half-furlong. Bet to win and place and play a 1-4-7 exacta box.
    Parx - Race #5
    Picks Notes
#1 APOLLONIA VITELLI (2-1) Overcame trouble but not the pace-setting winners in her last three starts.
#3 MOONLIT MAGIC (7-2) Adapted well to change of tactics, held second, gets Lasix today.
#5 NEZI’S GIRL (5-1) Steadied in six-horse field dominated by the favorites, runs for half the price.
Race Summary APPOLONIA VITELLI rallied for minor awards behind front-end winners in her last three starts. She encountered “clipped foe … raced wide… bumped start” comments and clearly improved with Lasix. Bet to win and place at what should be a suitable distance.

Race 9 - Maiden Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $15000 Class Rating: 64

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $8,500. ARIZONA BRED CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 1 DUKE GIRLS 3/1
    # 5 SASSY TINKERBELL 7/2
    # 8 DADS DIVA 9/2

DUKE GIRLS has a very good shot to take this race. This filly ought to be given consideration just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint races alone. Must be considered given the class of races run as of late. Solid average Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this equine a contender. SASSY TINKERBELL - Cruz has a win percentage of 21 over the last month. Ought to go to the front end and should never look back. DADS DIVA - Is a solid contender - given the 59 Equibase Speed Figure from her most recent race. She has recorded strong numbers under today's conditions and should fare well versus this group.

    Mountaineer Park - Race #8 - Post: 9:55pm - Claiming - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,700 Class Rating: 86

    Rating:

    #8 MATERS N TATERS (ML=8/1)
    #4 SUTTON VALLEY (ML=9/2)
    #5 QUARKY (ML=5/1)

MATERS N TATERS - Just look at his most recent speed rating, 87. That one looks good in this bunch. I figure that today's shorter distance should help this gelding. This one has increased his Equibase speed figs in each of the last two races. That kind of progress is just want you want for a winner today. SUTTON VALLEY - After the race aboard this horse on November 14th, the jockey is going to know the gelding much better. I think that this shorter trip should help this gelding. QUARKY - Gelding's last workout should have him fit for today's effort. Just missed hitting the board on April 2nd at Turf Paradise. With decent M/L odds today, he has my interest.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 ROYAL MAHOGANY (ML=5/2), #7 BAZOO (ML=3/1), #6 QUICK ENTRY (ML=8/1),

ROYAL MAHOGANY - Today's contest is 4 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance race in the last sixty days. Not the best of signs. This chalk horse probably needs at least one race to get back into shape. Pass on him today. It looks like too much zip is on board in this contest. This speedball will almost certainly get cooked up front. BAZOO - All kinds of crazy speed on board for this clash. Little chance for this speedy one. QUICK ENTRY - The fourth place finish in the last affair was not the greatest. Can't invest in this entrant in today's sprint of 4 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance race lately. This gelding recorded a speed fig in his last contest which likely isn't good enough in today's event. Recent lessening Equibase speed figures of 79/69/59 give an indication that this animal may be going off form.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #8 MATERS N TATERS is going to be the play if we are getting 4/1 or better
    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,5,8]

    Parx Racing - Race #6 - Post: 2:59pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $30,000 Class Rating: 67

    Rating:

    #1 ACTION HERO (ML=2/1)

ACTION HERO - I really like that last outing on April 1st at Parx Racing where he finished second. Took a class drop in the last race at Parx Racing. Lake keeps him at the same level right here. I think that's a good move. Each one of this colt's recent finish positions has been progressively better. The recent speed rating of 56 is the best last race speed fig in the bunch. This colt is number one in earnings per start. Take a long look at this horse in the post parade.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SHEER DOMINANCE (ML=7/2), #3 KING MUFASA (ML=4/1), #7 MAKEMYDAYCHARLIE (ML=5/1),

SHEER DOMINANCE - This horse ran a common speed rating last race out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that figure. KING MUFASA - 4/1 odds isn't enough for this participant when examining the most recent outings. Finished fourth in his most recent effort with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. MAKEMYDAYCHARLIE - The finish of eighth in the last event shows me that this horse may be going off form. Don't feel this runner will make an impact in today's event. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's Equibase class figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #1 ACTION HERO on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: 1 with 4

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
    None
    SUPERFECTA WAGERS: None

Race 5 - Optional Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $23500 Class Rating: 73

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES OR OPTIONAL CLAIMING 10,000 FOR HORSES THAT HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JANUARY 23 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 3 TENSE 4/1
    # 2 LUTION 8/1
    # 1 TINA'S TAPIZAR 7/2

TENSE looks to be a very strong contender. Rodriguez has one of the best winning percentages in this field with entries running at this distance and surface. Rodriguez has her trained very well to break swiftly out of the starting gate. This mare looks like a longshot play. LUTION - If you gander closely, this one has some longshot possibilities. Must be in good condition if the conditioner is bringing her back so quickly. TINA'S TAPIZAR - Have to suppose this horse will make a good showing again today. Put up a quite good speed rating last time out.
