Chargers LB Merriman arrested in domestic call

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Authorities say San Diego Chargers star linebacker Shawne Merriman(notes) has been arrested on suspicion of choking and restraining his girlfriend, a reality TV star, as she tried to leave his Southern California home.

San Diego County Sheriff’s Lt. Gary Steadman says 27-year-old Tila Tequila signed a citizen’s arrest warrant early Sunday, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment.

Tequila was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.

Merriman, 25, was taken into custody by deputies who responded to a distress call at his home in Poway, north of San Diego.

Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, is best known for her MTV dating reality show, “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.”

Sources claim that witnesses at Merriman's home said Merriman went to his bedroom with two women. Tequila walked into the room and Merriman asked her to join them, but she reacted angrily. Tequila was intoxicated, and she got naked and attempted to leave the house, according to sources. Merriman tried stopping Tequila from leaving, and that is when she called police. Sources told Vara that Tequila faked a neck injury, and when paramedics arrived they determined that she was OK. However, Tequila insisted on going to the hospital.

Tequila files suit vs. Merriman

Reality TV personality Tila Tequila has filed a lawsuit against Shawne Merriman over assault accusations from a September incident in which the San Diego Chargers linebacker wasn't charged with a crime.

In September, San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis dismissed Tequila's accusations that Merriman choked her and threw her to the ground while she was trying to leave his suburban home.


According to TMZ.com, Tequila is seeking damages for assault, battery, false imprisonment and emotional distress.

Tequila's lawyer, Cyrus Nownejad, cites photos showing bruises Tequila allegedly suffered from the incident at Merriman's home.

Merriman was arrested after Tequila signed a citizen's arrest warrant accusing Merriman of battery and false imprisonment. Both are felonies.

Dumanis decided not to charge Merriman after her office spent three days reviewing reports from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"After a thorough review of the investigation into the Sept. 6, 2009, incident at the Poway home of Shawne Merriman, our office has determined there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that any crime was committed," Dumanis said in a statement. "This case is now closed. No further comment will be made."

Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, is best known for "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila," which ran for two seasons on MTV. The bisexual dating show featured men and women vying for Tequila's affections. She has also modeled for Playboy and other men's magazines.

Merriman said he was trying to keep Tequila from leaving his home because she appeared to be intoxicated, and denied harming her.

You know its ridiculous woman like this til tequila that can ruin peoples lives with ttheir attention getting antics. If he was found guilty of those felonies when all he did was cheat on her and ask her to join in, which is pretty freakin hilarious by the way, then his career would most likely be ruined, because she wanted attention. Now i obviously dont know what happened but they dismissed the charges, but this broad is playing with his life and livliehood thats for sure. Merriman does seem to be in the middle of controversy a lot but you see my point? The fact that nothing happened does make this a humorous story tho.
