World Series Game 1 betting preview and odds: Astros at Dodgers

Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers (-170, 7)

The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't won a World Series since 1988, while the Houston Astros have never been crowned champions in their 56-season history. The teams begin their attempts to end their respective droughts when Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw pitches against Houston's Dallas Keuchel in Game 1 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers are in the World Series for the first time since their memorable 1988 slaying of the Oakland Athletics, a series best known for limping Kirk Gibson's decisive Game 1 homer. The Astros lost to the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 World Series and this season's 101-win squad knocked out the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees to reach the Series. "Our guys are battle tested now," Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. "We had no question coming in. I think more people had questions about us than we questioned ourselves. Now we chase the ultimate prize. There's two teams standing. It's a race to four wins now." The Dodgers, who won 104 regular-season games, rolled through the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs with standout third baseman Justin Turner excelling by going 12-for-31 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in the eight games.

    TV:
    8:09 p.m. ET, FOX

    LINE HISTORY:
The Dodgers opened Game 1 as -155 home chalk and have since been moved to the current number of Dodgers -170. The total, not surprisingly, hit the board at a very low 7.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (2-1, 2.60 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (2-0, 3.63 ERA)

Keuchel has struck out 25 in 17 1/3 innings over three starts this October and is a solid 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six career postseason appearances (five starts). The 29-year-old former Cy Young Award winner scanned the Dodgers' lineup and had no trouble anointing it as the best he'll face all season. "Just seems like production top to bottom, even some of their extra guys, has been there all year," Keuchel said at his Monday press conference. "They are going to be the deepest team we played, hands down. My job is to go out there and get the job done."

Kershaw has served up six homers in three starts this postseason but his career ledger has improved to 6-7 with a 4.40 ERA in 21 appearances (17 starts). The 29-year-old three-time Cy Young winner is 3-2 with a 2.38 ERA in eight career starts against the Astros and has experienced struggles with Astros star second baseman Jose Altuve (6-for-15, four doubles). "He hits everything pretty well. I think he's super aggressive but at the same time he hits a lot of pitches," Kershaw said of Altuve during his Monday press conference. "... He's a tough out. I think he's one of the toughest outs in the game. You just can't give in to him."

    TRENDS:

    * Astros are 1-6 in their last seven playoff road games.
    * Dodgers are 7-1 in their last eight playoff games.
    * Over is 7-1 in Astros last eight games vs. a left-handed starter.
    * Over is 5-1-1 in Dodgers last seven home games.

    CONSENSUS:

The public is siding with Kershaw and the Dodgers in Game 1, with 63 percent of wagers on Los Angeles. Even with the low number of 7, bettors think Kershaw and Keuchel will be on their games, with 59 percent of the public on the Under.

    WALK-OFF NOTES:

    * The Dodgers' bullpen didn't allow a hit in 29 at-bats in the National League Championship Series against the Cubs and has a 0.94 ERA this postseason.

    * Los Angeles SS Corey Seager (back) made the World Series roster and said Monday he's ready to play nine innings.

    Preview: Oilers at Penguins

    Gracenote
    Oct 23, 2017

Last season, Connor McDavid pried away some of the hardware that typically has been the property of Sidney Crosby, but the NHL's reigning MVP and his team have work to do if they hope to hoist the sport's ultimate trophy. McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have a measuring-stick game on deck when they visit Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night.

McDavid won both the Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy last season as the NHL's leading scorer - Crosby tied for second - and enters his third career matchup against Pittsburgh's resident superstar with the Oilers having dropped five of their last six. Stunningly, Edmonton ranks last in the Western Conference in scoring with an average of 2.00 goals per game despite the presence of McDavid, who has three goals and eight points in the first seven games. The two-time defending champion Penguins are last in goals allowed (4.33) and are coming off a 7-1 beating at Tampa Bay, prompting coach Mike Sullivan to call his team "flawed." Crosby, tied with Evgeni Malkin for the team scoring lead with 10 points, was held off the scoresheet for the second time in Saturday's drubbing.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TVA, Sportsnet One (Edmonton), AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE OILERS (2-5-0): McDavid opened the season with a flourish, registering a hat trick in a 3-0 win over Calgary, but he has not scored since and Edmonton managed just two goals or fewer five times in the past six games. After squeezing out a 2-1 overtime win at Chicago on Thursday, the Oilers lost in Philadelphia by an identical score two days later after coughing up the winning goal with just over two minutes to play. "We're cleaning up the defensive part of our game, which is a start for us," coach Todd McLellan told reporters. "But now we've got to get the offensive part going."

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (5-3-1): Pittsburgh won three in a row, all by one goal, before the mauling in Tampa - the fifth straight time and seventh in nine games it has allowed at least three tallies. The Penguins made a move to address some of the defensive deficiencies while adding a third-line center by acquiring Riley Sheahan from the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. "He can play against other team's top guys, he can play certainly against the bigger, stronger guys," Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford told reporters. "He's a strong skater, but down low, he can handle those bigger, stronger guys."

    OVERTIME

    1. The Penguins on Monday placed G Antti Niemi on waivers after he fell to 0-3-0 with a 7.49 goals-against average.

    2. McDavid has one goal and three assists in his two matchups against Crosby and Pittsburgh.

    3. Penguins F Carter Rowney, injured in Saturday's loss, was not at practice Monday along with D Matt Hunwick.

    PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Oilers 2

    Preview: Lightning at Hurricanes

    Gracenote
    Oct 23, 2017

Two-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner Steven Stamkos is showing a new side to his game as a setup man and the Tampa Bay captain hopes to continue an early-season point barrage when the Lightning visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. Stamkos, who has recorded 324 goals in 595 NHL games, boasts league-bests of 15 assists and 18 points in nine games after missing most of 2016-17 with a knee injury.

“I said coming into the year, a healthy, hungry Steven Stamkos is really good for us and bad for the rest of the league,” Tampa Bay right wing Ryan Callahan told the Tampa Bay Times. “I think he’s showing that. He’s our leader. We go by his example, and he’s leading in the right way.” The Lightning have points in seven straight games (6-0-1) with Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov (10 goals overall - tied for the NHL lead with Alex Ovechkin) and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy (.933 save percentage on the season) leading the way while Carolina is tied for the fewest games played (six) after finishing a road trip 2-2-0. The Hurricanes have not gotten off to a great start offensively, but left wing Jeff Skinner owns five goals (six points) in the early going after recording a career-high 37 in 2016-17. “He’s been dangerous for a long time now,” Carolina coach Bill Peters told the Raleigh News & Observer. “. … He gets the puck in good spots and works hard in the offensive zone, so he’s getting rewarded for that.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), FSN Carolinas

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (7-1-1): Stamkos’ assist total is way up due in part to his linemate Kucherov, who is off to a blistering start while notching at least one goal in eight games, while both have a point in all nine contests. “When you got a guy like ‘Kuch’ on your line - there’s probably a lot of people yelling at me to shoot the puck more - but he’s so hot, you just try to get him the puck,” Stamkos said. Rookie defenseman Mikhail Sergachev has eight points - six in the last three games - and is expected to play his 10th game Tuesday, which would officially trigger the use of the first of a three-year entry level contract.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (3-2-1): Skinner is the only player with more than two goals, but Jordan Staal (two) and fellow veteran forward Justin Williams (one) each have five points. Carolina must get more from a trio of forwards off to slow starts - Sebastian Aho (no goals, three assists), Teuvo Teravainen (two goals) and Victor Rask (one, one) - while defenseman Justin Faulk has not scored after notching a career-high 17 goals last season and 48 in the last three campaigns. The Hurricanes have allowed 27 or fewer shots in five of six games with the only outlier being Cam Ward’s 48-save performance in a 5-3 victory at Edmonton last Tuesday.

    OVERTIME

    1. Carolina F Elias Lindholm is slated to play his 300th NHL game Tuesday and is one assist shy of 100 for his career.

    2. Stamkos notched his 113th power-play goal in Saturday’s 7-1 victory over Pittsburgh, passing Vincent Lecavalier for the most in franchise history.

    3. The Lightning have earned at least a point in six straight meetings (5-0-1), but lost 1-0 in overtime at Carolina last season.

    PREDICTION: Hurricanes 3, Lightning 2

    Preview: Ducks at Flyers

    Gracenote
    Oct 23, 2017

The Anaheim Ducks are already a plus-1 prior to Tuesday's contest against the Philadelphia Flyers that kicks off a four-game road trip, but they'll play minus one of their top defenseman. Anaheim lost Cam Fowler for an unknown period of time with a knee injury he sustained in Friday's 6-2 victory over Montreal, but center Ryan Getzlaf (lower-body) returns to the lineup and defenseman Hampus Lindholm makes his season debut.

“You’re always getting tested throughout the course of the season,” Ducks defenseman Kevin Bieksa told the Orange County Register. “The good teams and the teams that make the playoffs are the ones that can survive these kinds of injuries.'' Defenseman Sami Vatanen (shoulder) could play his first game of the season sometime on the trip while Patrick Eaves (lower-body) stayed home. And with No. 2 center Ryan Kesler (hip) out until at least Christmas, it's a small miracle that Anaheim sits at .500. Philadelphia, which snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Ducks (0-5-3) with a 3-2 overtime victory Oct. 7 on Wayne Simmonds' overtime goal, is 3-1-0 on its five-game homestand after a 2-1 victory over Edmonton on Saturday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Prime Ticket (Anaheim), NBCSN Philadelphia

ABOUT THE DUCKS (3-3-1): Getzlaf practiced with the top power-play unit Monday while Lindholm appeared with the No. 2 group. Andrew Cogliano, who has played in all 793 games to start his career - the third-longest streak in NHL history - helped keep Anaheim afloat with two goals, a team-high six points and a plus-6 rating as has defenseman Josh Manson (team-high plus-7, four assists). Corey Perry recorded an assist Friday for his first point since recording two goals and an assist in the season opener.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (5-3-0): Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and Jakub Voracek lead the team with 10 assists apiece with Gostisbehere's goal the only one among them. Simmonds boasts a team-leading six goals while Claude Giroux has five goals and five assists, with four tallies and seven points in his last four games. Sean Couturier and Valtteri Filppula are also off to solid starts with four goals apiece with Couturier registering a team-best plus-9.

    OVERTIME

    1. Flyers F Jordan Weal (goal, three assists) missed the last two games with an upper-body injury, but practiced Monday.

    2. Anaheim is an NHL-worst 1-for-25 on the power play, recording its goal Friday after going 0-for-21 to start the season.

    3. Seven of Gostisbehere's assists have come on the power play, which is clicking at a 24.2 percent rate.

    Preview: Coyotes at Islanders

    Gracenote
    Oct 23, 2017

Having moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season, the New York Islanders seek their third consecutive victory when they host the league's only winless team on Tuesday night. The reeling Arizona Coyotes have only one point through their first eight games and have lost their last four visits to New York by a combined 19-6.

The Islanders capped a four-game road trip with a shootout win at the rival Rangers and followed that up with a 5-3 victory over visiting San Jose on Saturday. In the midst of playing 13 of 15 games against teams from the opposing conference, New York owns a 22-4-4 record versus opponents from the West at Barclays Center. The sputtering Coyotes, who earned their only point in a shootout loss to expansion Vegas, suffered their sixth consecutive regulation defeat in a 4-2 loss to Chicago on Saturday. "Nobody’s going to feel sorry for us. We’re going to have to climb out," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet told reporters. "We can’t look for any help other than what’s in that room.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, MSG-Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE COYOTES (0-7-1): Arizona coughed up a pair of third-period goals in the final 4 1/2 minutes in Saturday's loss in Chicago. “It's like a broken record,” Tocchet told reporters. “We're playing competitive. All the analytics stuff, people in that stuff say, 'It's going good.' But obviously, we're not winning." The losses continue to pile up despite the play of 2016 first-round pick Clayton Keller, who has scored three times in the past two games and leads NHL rookies with six goals.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (4-3-1): After being held off the scoresheet for five games in a row, captain John Tavares scored once and set up a pair of tallies by Anders Lee for his second three-point outing of the season. “I never worry about Johnny,” Lee told reporters. “He’s an unbelievable player, he’s our captain. He doesn’t let that stuff take away from his leadership or his work ethic and he was rewarded tonight.” Coach Doug Weight said Jaroslav Halak will be in net against the Coyotes.

    OVERTIME

    1. New York's power play ranks tied for last in the league, converting on 1 of 25 chances.

    2. Arizona's No. 1 line of Keller, Max Domi and Derek Stepan has figured in 11 of the team's 18 goals.

    3. Tavares is tied with Bob Bourne for seventh place on the franchise's all-time list with 238 goals.

    PREDICTION: Islanders 4, Coyotes 2

    Preview: Panthers at Canadiens

    Gracenote
    Oct 23, 2017

The Montreal Canadiens came up empty in California but hope a three-day break will help them recover as they seek their first win since the season opener when they begin a three-game homestand Tuesday against the Florida Panthers. Montreal, which is off to its worst eight-game start since 1941, scored a total of five goals in its three setbacks on the West Coast, a trek that extended the club's winless streak to seven games (0-6-1).

The Canadiens' offense has been a major problem this season as the club has scored more than two goals only once, netting three in an overtime loss to Toronto on Oct. 14. Defense also has become an issue of late, with the team surrendering a total of 16 tallies in the losses at San Jose, Los Angeles and Anaheim. Florida is coming off a 4-1 triumph at Washington on Saturday -- its first road win of the season -- that put an end to a three-game slide that included a pair of 4-3 losses to Pittsburgh. Aleksander Barkov, Evgenii Dadonov and Vincent Trocheck each recorded a goal and an assist against the Capitals, with the latter two pulling even with Jonathan Huberdeau for the team scoring lead with seven points.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Florida, TSN2, RDS (Montreal)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (3-4-0): Finnish goaltender Harri Sateri was recalled from Springfield of the American Hockey League and served as James Reimer's backup Saturday as veteran Roberto Luongo was placed on injured reserve because of a hand injury. The 27-year-old Sateri, who was selected by San Jose in the fourth round of the 2008 draft but has yet to play in an NHL game, signed a one-year contract with Florida in July after spending three seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League. Huberdeau notched an assist against the Capitals, giving him at least one point in six of his seven games this season.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (1-6-1): Montreal can't be accused of not trying to score, as it set a franchise record for most shots in a period with 30 in the second session of Friday's loss to the Ducks - eclipsing the previous mark of 27, which was reached three times overall but most recently in the first period against Ottawa on Dec. 12, 2015. Ales Hemsky's first season in Montreal hasn't exactly gotten off to a good start as the 34-year-old Czech has failed to record a point in seven games and now is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Hemsky's injury and the team's lack of offense prompted it to recall right wings Nikita Scherbak and Michael McCarron from Laval of the American Hockey League.

    OVERTIME

    1. The Canadiens are 3-for-32 on the power play while Florida has killed only 21 of 29 penalties.

    2. Florida Cs Jared McCann (lower body) and Colton Sceviour (upper body) are day-to-day after exiting Saturday's contest.

    3. Montreal D Karl Alzner is second on the club in scoring with four points - all assists, which gives him the team lead in that category. Jonathan Drouin (two goals) has five points.

    PREDICTION: Canadiens 4, Panthers 2

    Preview: Kings at Senators

    Gracenote
    Oct 24, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings have no time to dwell on their first regulation loss of the season, as they continue their six-game road trip Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators. Los Angeles became the last team in the NHL to fail to earn a point as it dropped a 3-2 decision at Toronto on Monday to fall to 1-1-0 on its trek.

Trevor Lewis recorded a goal and an assist for the Kings, who also began the 1995-96 season with a seven-game point streak (4-0-3). Los Angeles will be facing a team that also has lost just once in regulation in Ottawa, which is 1-1-1 on its five-game homestand. The Senators began the string with a shutout loss to Vancouver and fell to New Jersey in overtime before rolling to a 6-3 triumph over Toronto on Saturday. Derick Brassard and Mark Stone each scored two goals and set up another as Ottawa posted its first home win after going 0-1-3 over its first four contests at Canadian Tire Centre.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), TSN5, RDS Info (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE KINGS (6-1-1): Los Angeles received a bit of a scare Monday as Jonathan Quick exited the game in the first period after enduring a blow to the head during a tussle in front of his net. The former Conn Smythe Trophy winner made a quick return, however, missing only 36 seconds of ice time after being examined on the bench. Defenseman Jake Muzzin failed to land on the scoresheet against Toronto, ending his six-game point streak.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (4-1-3): The team will be without Bobby Ryan for approximately one month, as the right wing broke his right index finger in the victory over the Maple Leafs. The 30-year-old native of New Jersey, who was drafted second overall by Anaheim in 2005, has notched six assists in eight games this season but has yet to score a goal. Logan Brown, a 19-year-old center who was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft, recorded an assist Saturday for his first NHL point.

    OVERTIME

    1. Kings RW Dustin Brown was kept off the scoresheet Monday after recording a season-high four points versus Columbus two days earlier.

    2. Ottawa G Craig Anderson played his 300th game with the club on Saturday, becoming the first netminder in franchise history to reach the plateau.

    3. Lewis has collected five points over his last three contests following a four-game drought.

    Preview: Red Wings at Sabres

    Gracenote
    Oct 23, 2017

The Detroit Red Wings should be an angry team as they begin a three-game road trip against Atlantic Division rivals Tuesday night when they meet the improving Buffalo Sabres. The Red Wings are winless in four games (0-3-1) since starting the season with four victories in the first five contests, managing only 21 shots in a 4-1 setback against Vancouver at home Sunday.

“It was a brutal effort. I thought it was an embarrassing effort, not even close to the level of competitiveness you have to have,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill told reporters after the latest loss. “We should be embarrassed of ourselves, from me at the top all the way down. We got outcompeted, outworked, out detailed.” The Red Wings will try to turn things around against the Sabres, who have gone 2-1-1 in their last four games after starting the campaign with five consecutive losses (0-4-1). Buffalo rallied for a 5-4 overtime victory at Boston on Saturday as Evander Kane registered his team-leading sixth goal and Ryan O’Reilly scored in the extra session. “I give our guys a lot of credit because they’ve been through a lot in just a short period of time,” Sabres first-year coach Phil Housley told the Buffalo News. “It’s one game. … I feel great for the guys in the locker room, and hopefully they’ll get some confidence from this.”

    TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (4-4-1): Right wing Anthony Mantha had the only goal Sunday - his first in four games - to tie captain Henrik Zetterberg for the team lead at four while the power play continued to struggle. Detroit is 1-for-16 with the man advantage over the last five games and forced only one opportunity versus Vancouver after getting five against Washington two days earlier. Defenseman Mike Green tops the team in assists (10) and points (11) while forward Martin Frk is pointless in the last five contests after recording four in the first four games of the season.

ABOUT THE SABRES (2-5-2): Buffalo will need more depth in the scoring department as Kane (six), Jason Pominville (five), Jack Eichel (four) and O’Reilly (three) have 72 percent of the goals in the first nine contests. Forwards Kyle Okposo and Matt Moulson, along with defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, have yet to record a goal while Benoit Pouliot scored his first in Saturday’s victory. Forward Zemgus Girgensons (foot), who has missed the last two contests after blocking a shot in Vegas, and defenseman Nathan Beaulieu (upper-body) are questionable for Tuesday’s contest.

    OVERTIME

    1. Ristolainen tops all NHL players in ice time per game (27:27) and is among the league leaders with 30 hits.

    2. Detroit F Scott Wilson, who was acquired from Pittsburgh on Saturday, played 9:28 and did not have a shot in his debut Sunday.

    3. The Sabres earned at least a point in four meetings with the Red Wings last season (3-0-1).

PREDICTION: Sabres 4, Red Wings 3

    Preview: Canucks at Wild

    Oct 23, 2017

Life on the road is agreeing with the Vancouver Canucks, who will wrap up a five-game trip with the visit to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. The Canucks had dropped three in a row at home following a season-opening win, but they have turned things around and are 3-1-0 on the trek - all against Atlantic Division opponents.

Vancouver has been impressive in its last two victories, outshooting the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings by a staggering 78-43 margin. Sunday's 4-1 win in Detroit was the fourth regulation victory for the Canucks, who didn't notch their fourth regulation win until Nov. 29 a year ago. Preparing to begin a six-game homestand, Minnesota is off to a slow start and buried in last place in the Central Division despite a 4-2 win at Calgary on Saturday night. "We want to get over the .500 mark," Wild coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters. "If you want to be the best you can't be satisfied with mediocrity."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Vancouver, FSN North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (4-3-1): While Sven Baertschi netted his first two goals of the season at Detroit, forward Derek Dorsett is on a tear with four tallies over the past three games. Dorsett had a career-high 12 goals in 2011-12 and hasn't notched more than seven goals since, but he already has five this season. "He's been amazing for us," Baertschi told reporters of Dorsett. "Right now it's just that feeling, whenever he has the puck and he's going down and shooting, it's just that feeling that that puck might go in."

ABOUT THE WILD (2-2-2): Rugged forward Chris Stewart registered 13 goals in 79 games with Minnesota last season, but he is off to a fast start with six tallies in the first six contests, failing to score in only one game. Charlie Coyle is sidelined with a broken leg and Zach Parise (undisclosed) again was a no-show at Monday's practice, but the Wild did receive good news on the injury front. Mikael Granlund, last season's leading scorer who has been out since the opener, said he hopes to play Tuesday.

    OVERTIME

    1. Canucks D Troy Stecher was forced to leave Sunday's game with an injury to his left leg.

    2. Wild G Devan Dubnyk is 10-8-3 with a 2.56 goals-against average versus Vancouver.

    3. Canucks F Daniel Sedin is 10 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

    PREDICTION: Wild 4, Canucks 3
