Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 11, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, Hoosier Park presents a 13 race card with the headliners being two and three year olds battling in Indiana Sires Stakes action. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 10 and that sequence will be my focus.

The drivers with the hottest hands on Saturday were John De Long and Sam Widger who had three wins. The leading conditioner on the night was Jeff Cullipher with two trips to the winner's circle.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 10

2-Bestaluck (9/2)-Faded after a 1st over trip leaving from post 10 and has a good chance of being a major player with this post draw.
3-Infinite Warrior (4-1)-Hawthorne shipper deserves respect off a nice rally in last to win. But the pace fell apart in that race after a 56.2 opening half. Gets a positive driver change in Oosting but might be over bet in 2nd lifetime start.
5-Hangry (3-1)-Comes off 2 nice qualifiers and showed good speed in the 2nd tune-up on 7-3. Will likely look to get on the engine and not look back. Best to respect the Erv Miller-Trace Tetrick combo but may not offer much value.
7-Ultra Image (8-1)-Willing to take a swing here and will look for a more aggressive steer after a couple of races at this track. Could leave to get a good seat and possibly trip out behind one of the chalks.

    Race 11

1-Rockin On Venus (7/5)-Rockin Image 3-year-old could beat this crew from any post but starting from the rail just adds to the likelihood. Oosting should be on the engine and daring anyone to collar him down the lane. Seems to be a smooth trip away from the 7th picture in 10 starts this year.
2-Goldie's Legacy (5-1)-Cullipher trainee has shown solid improvement this year. If Venus doesn't doesn't have his fast ball this guy appears to have the best shot of an upset. Widger should enjoy a pocket ride behind the chalk and has the speed to stay close.

    Race 12

1-Girl Giggles (2-1)-Not thrilled with the morning line price but does have a couple of starts at the track. Looks like the rail may help to be forwardly placed and to get an efficient trip over some others.
5-Heidis Image (9/2)-Putnam trainee was in a quick qualifier on 7-3 and raced the back half in 56.2. Should get a good trip with this post draw and be in the hunt at the wire.
9-Coach Keri (4-1)-Finished up nicely in the first start on a big track at Haw. The post makes the price but Widger knows how to work a trip from post 9. This filly could be sitting on a big try and may like the long stretch at HoP. Showed 1.56 speed in Stickney and this surface is normally faster.

    Race 13

7-This Kit Rocks (4-1)-Raced from the back against some tough 3-year-olds and finished off the mile with a 25.2 last panel. Has the gate speed to be put in play early and fits well with this crew. If Putnam works a good trip it could lead to the 4th picture in 12 starts this year.
8-Skyway Victor (9/2)-Won the Hoosier Cup Consolation on the 4th of July in gate to wire fashion. Has the gate speed to get a close-up seat and Tetrick should have the Miller entry in striking range at the top of the lane.
9-Brookview Bullet (5/2)-Back in town after making an appearance in the Messenger at Yonkers and was stuck outside with post 7. Has finished in the money in 7 of 11 starts with 5 wins at HoP. Can beat this crew and the post will help the price but the start will be key. Probably can't leave faster than 7 & 8 but could get a decent seat and be close to the top by the last turn.

Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 7/11/21

    July 11, 2021
Every Thursday through Sunday handicapper Jeff Siegel offers his best wagering opportunity from a selected North American racetrack. These “Best Plays” can take the form of a win wager, exacta, trifecta, or a daily double, pick-3, pick-4 or pick-6. Selections are listed in chronological order.

    *
Belmont Park Race 2 – Post time: 1:04 ET
    4-Hot Fudge (6-1)

First-timer by Liam’s Map makes her debut in this turf sprint for juvenile fillies and appears cranked up and ready to win right now. Three bullet workouts from her last four drills are impressive enough, but this L. Rice-trained filly initially displayed her talent when sizzling a furlong in 9 4/5 seconds (equally the fastest in the sale) during the preview session of OBS April Sale. Subsequently purchased through the ring for $235,000, she is listed at 6-1 on the morning line and will offer excellent wagering value at anywhere near that price.
    *
    *
Monmouth Park Race 3 – Post time: 1:15 ET
    1-Alli Alley (5/2)

The very quick daughter of Quality Road finds a proper spot right in this five furlong grass sprint for 2-year-old fillies. The workouts at Keeneland leading up to her debut don’t jump off the page, but make no mistake, she has plenty of zip, having been highly impressive at the OBS April sale when cruising a furlong in 10 seconds flat without undue pressure. Purchased through the ring for $260,000 and hailing from the W. Ward barn (33% with a massive ROI with first-time starters), this daughter of Quality Road should be more than fit to handle this assignment. At 5/2 on the morning line, she’s a win play and rolling exotic single.
    *
    *
Ellis Park Race 4 – Post time: 2:14 CT
    3-Jolly Tommy (8-1)

This first-timer by the exciting freshman stallion Practical Joke and from the dam of the good California stakes winner Battle Force brought $170,000 in the OBS April sale after displaying superior speed and athleticism when previewing in a blistering :21 flat and appears primed and ready to win at first asking in this seven furlong sprint for 2-year-olds. A long-striding colt that should have no difficulty with today’s extended sprint trip, the E. Kenneally-trained has put together a recent series of solid, steady drills to provide a proper foundation, so at 8-1 on the morning line he looks like a live item in what on paper appears to be a wide open affair.
    *
    *
Belmont Park Race 7 – Post time: 3:47 ET
    1-Harper’s in Charge (4-1)

We loved her debut win at Aqueduct last November, a six and one-half length romp when geared down in the final furlong and never being asked at any stage, so if she returns as well as she left the daughter of Malibu Moon can takes this class hike to the first level allowance ranks in stride. She’ll race with Lasix for the C. Clement barn (an excellent 20% with layoff runners) and the work tab at Saratoga appears solid, so with a clean break from the rail we’re expecting this talented sophomore filly to take control early and never look back. She’s listed at 4-1 on the morning line and at that price offers good value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.
    *
    *
Ellis Park Race 6 – Post Time: 3:10 CT
    9-Nineties Country (3-1)

Unless there’s a good thing among the field’s first-time starters, this colt should be set to earn his diploma today in a seven furlong maiden juvenile sprint that may have come up slightly softer than the card’s fourth race split. A promising third in his debut behind Glacial and Vodka N Water (who returned to finish third and second, respectively, in the Bashford Manor S.-G3, this son of Connect hails from the high-percentage B. Cox barn (sensational stats with second-time starters) while retaining F. Geroux and breaking from a comfortable outside draw. At 3-1 on the morning line, he’s worth a play in the win pool and then with exactas/trifectas can be hooked up with major contenders 5-We All See It and 1-Moon Dial.

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Sunday at Gulfstream

    July 11, 2021 | By Jerry Shottenkirk
Jesus’ Team is back to the races Sunday at Gulfstream Park, and in the featured mile handicap, he’s assigned to carry 127 pounds, spotting opponents five to 12 pounds.

The Handicap With No Name is the 10th race and third leg of the Late Pick 4, and the weight concession isn’t enough to keep Jesus’ Team from being a single. Jose Francisco Angelo’s star pupil has been off since a sixth-place finish in the Dubai World Cup, and his only other 2021 start produced a second-place finish behind Knicks Go in the Pegasus World Cup over this strip.

Jesus’ Team has come a long way since winning a $25,000 claiming race against ‘non-winners of two’ last May and his turn toward greater fortunes began with a third in the Jim Dandy, followed by a third in the Preakness and a second in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

It’s difficult to find a downside to Jesus’ Team’s appearance. He’s been off six months off, but after the trip to the other side of the globe and some tough races against top-echelon opponents, the freshening up probably did him some good. His workouts have been very good, and the rivals he runs against today do not come close to what he’s faced.

Jesus’s Team is the single on the suggested ticket, which totals $48. The three other races in sequence are anything but easy, and the singleton allows the necessary spreading out in other races without costing a fortune.

Here is what’s happening on the Late Pick 4 ticket:

    8th Race (4:29 p.m. ET, claiming)

RACE DAY SPEED makes the step up to a higher claiming level, but her form cannot be disputed. She’s won two straight for $6,250 and was claimed in each – most recently by the Tamara Levy stable.

She has managed to carve out some outstanding trips in her last two and this is less than an impossible spot. She’s won four of 11 this year and running back to those recent races will make her a solid player here.

Also on the ticket: BETWEEN DREAMS, INCLUDE THE BEAST, and GOODBYE GABY.

9th Race (5:02 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)

PASSION PLUS, like JESUS’ TEAM, is from the D’Angelo barn, and this pair gives their connections a good chance for a very successful day. PASSION PLUS has been in good form since March, with two wins and two seconds in five starts.

Her strength is her ability to adjust to pace and not to require a particular scenario to make her run. This is a wide-open event, but she could rate an edge because she consistently gives herself a chance.

Also on the ticket: TIZ ENOUGH, LOOKINLIKEAQUEEN, WONDER BLONDY, LITTLE BIT GOOD, and AIZU.

    10th Race (5:35 p.m. ET, handicap)

    JESUS’ TEAM

Lots to like about JESUS’ TEAM, and if runs anywhere close to his ability, he should be able to take this.
Also on the ticket: None, he’s a single.

    11th Race (6:08 p.m. ET, maiden claiming)

SASSY CAT showed signs of life two races back when she set the pace and finished third going 7.5 furlongs. She’s back to five furlongs, has enough speed to stay close and likely will have some punch at the end of it, having gone longer last time.

This maiden-claiming race is a tough handicapping proposition and requires a few of these. SASSY CAT has a good chance to work out a decent trip, and that could give her a slight advantage.

Also on the ticket: SHOULDAKNOWNBETTER KENYA SUN JULIE BIRD

Gulfstream Park 50-cent Late Pick 4 (races 8-11):
    8) #2 Race Day Speed, #5 Between Dreams, #7 Include the Beast, #8 Goodbye Gaby.
    9) #4 Tiz Enough, #6 Passion Plus, #8 Lookinlikeaqueen, #9 Wonder Blondy, #11 Little Bit Good, #12 Aizu.
    10) #5 Jesus’ Team.
    11) #1 Sassy Cat, #2 Shouldaknownbetter, #3 Kenya Sun, #12 Julie Bird,
    Suggested ticket: 2-5-7-8 with 4-6-8-9-11-12 with 5 with 1-2-3-12. ($48)

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Arlington - Race #5
    Picks Notes
#2 Clear to Close Nothing to write home about since switching barns, but maybe he has some upside in this second start off the bench while getting back to the grass. Mid-range price chance.
#6 Moon Flash Think he's right there with the top choice, but he doesn't tend to finish his races with much energy, so he's again vulnerable late.
#5 Macho Classic Should be better while getting back down to this level, and something like his two-back run would probably do the trick with this group.
Race Summary Clear to Close needs a big form reversal, but he has a right to do better at this trip after getting the comeback race out of the way last time out.
    Arlington - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#2 Aiken to Be She proved in a couple of recent local starts that she still has something in the tank, and she might get a pretty good trip from close range over a course on which she has historically been very good.
#1 Richies Great Girl She'll look for her fourth in a row after scoring the hat trick over the winter, but I worry that she might not get quite enough pace to come home on top.
#4 Senora Roma She has some pace with an excellent forward rider signed on, and she might offer a better number than her stablemate on the rail.
Race Summary Aiken to Be is a pretty reliable type over the local turf course, and she might offer a playable price with a couple of capable Rivellis signed on.
    Arlington - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#4 Readthecliffnotes He should appreciate the move to this 7f trip, and maybe this third start off the bench will produce a top effort. Worth a look as the likely second choice.
#3 D'fever This guy is better than ever in his 5yo season after a very lengthy layoff, rattling off three in a row, including a sharp local score while moving into open company. I love his form and his layoff story, but I wonder how long he can hold this kind of form...
#6 Richiesgotswagger He might be best of the rest with these, but his form can be hit or miss, and he can be dicey late in the lane. Guessing you can get through this race with the top two.
Race Summary Readthecliffnotes might be the right one to handle D'fever at this 7f trip, as the added ground should allow him a longer rally to try and reel in the razor-sharp D'fever.

    Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

    Belmont Park - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#6 Yodel E.A. Who Didn't break well and was far back throughout his last one, but he has several races on his form that put him in the mix here; closed well and just missed here two races back and will be rolling in the stretch.
#7 Endorsed Didn't fire against the nation's top sprinters in the G1 Churchill Downs in May and lands in a good spot here; can be in the hunt from the outset.
#1 Jalen Journey Has taken three of his last five against good company and comes off a wire-to-wire score here; tough on the front end.
Race Summary Yodel E.A. Who's last was a throw out and he's performed well in good races; will get a fast pace to chase and can bring some late heat.
    Belmont Park - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#1 Harper's Charge Put away rivals halfway through and drew off to an easy win in her only start, which came November at Aqueduct; showed she has talent and she has been working well leading up to this one.
#4 Bella Sofia Set the pace and was caught late in the Jersey Girl, which was her second start after an 11-length maiden score; loves the track and should be right there throughout.
#5 Midtown Rose Was a claiming-race winner two back and then followed with a good second under these conditions; chance at a price.
Race Summary Harper's Charge was impressive in her only appearance and can get a good trip inside; ready to go in for return off a layoff.
    Belmont Park - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#4 Call Me Love Improved from Aqueduct to Belmont as she was up in time for a sharp win last out; graded stakes-placed and ready for another big effort at a good price.
#3 Luck Money Won the Zagora Stakes last October in her only Belmont start; is a good traveler and comes in off a second in the Searching at Pimlico.
#2 Mutamakina Didn't fire her best shot on a yielding course and finished sixth in the G2 New York last out; she has a stakes win and a stakes runner-up performance in only four US starts after running in France.
Race Summary Call Me Love showed a lot of stamina and drive for a narrow win last time and is capable of performing well in this step up in class.
