    What Muswellbrook Races
Where Muswellbrook Race Club – Racecourse Rd, Muswellbrook NSW 2333
    When Monday, January 16, 2023
    First Race 1:50pm AEDT
    Ladbrokes Logo

    Visit Ladbrokes

The Muswellbrook Race Club will host a competitive seven-race program, as one of the two race meetings being held this Monday. The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with the warm weather on the forecast for Sunday and Monday, we expect to see a firm track come race day. The rail will be in the True position for the entire circuit, when racing gets underway at 1:50pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Muswellbrook – The Hungarian

Our best bet of the day will be The Hungarian from the Paul Messara yard, and he will be looking to record back-to-back wins after breaking his maiden at Tamworth over 1400m last start on November 29. This four-year-old gelding has raced from the back of the field at two of his three career starts, and we expect to see him do exactly that on Monday after drawing barrier 13. This son of Snitzel will be making the jump from Maiden grade to a Class 1 Handicap as well as the jump from 1400m to 1450m, which should suit this gelding as he will get back and look to run on. Aaron Bullock has only ridden this guy once and that was last start to break his maiden, so if Bullock can be make his move at the 600m mark and find the outside at the top of the home straight, this gelding will be flying home late.
    Best Bet

    Race 3 – Silk #1 The Hungarian (13)

    4yo Gelding | T: Paul Messara | J: Aaron Bullock (59kg)

    $2.35 with Ladbrokes
Next Best at Muswellbrook – Cyclone Rupert

The Bjorn Baker-trained Cyclone Rupert will be looking to break his maiden at his third career start after finishing sixth on debut and then third last start at Nowra over 1100m where he looked to peak in the final 100m. Now that this three-year-old gelding drops back to 1000m we should see him take up a much more prominent position from barrier six and give himself every chance. Mitchell Bell will stick with this guy on Monday after riding him last start and if he can settle him a little closer than last start, this guy could prove to have a little too much class for this field.
    Next Best

    Race 7 – Silk #3 Cyclone Rupert (6)

    3yo Gelding | T: Bjorn Baker | J: Mitchell Bell (57.5kg)

    $9.50 with Bet365
Best Value at Muswellbrook – Miss Violet

In the second race of the day, we will see last start winner Miss Violet for the Mark Minervini yard, who broke her maiden at Taree over 1000m on January 3. This daughter of Flying Artie has returned to racing in great form after a seven-month spell. Last campaign this mare only race on rain affected tracks throughout the autumn in New South Wales and she showed that she doesn’t handle them at all. Ashley Morgan had her first ride on this mare last start, kicking off the relationship between the two of them in great style. She will stick on Monday and with the cosy barrier draw of three, we should see these two go close to recording back-to-back wins.
    Best Value

    Race 2 – Silk #9 Miss Violet (3)

    4yo Mare | T: Mark Minervini | J: Ashley Morgan (55kg)

Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    January 16, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia

Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the week with a 10-race card. The feature comes in Race 2, a Condition Trot with a $28,000 purse. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7

3-Dealin With Dewey (7/2)-Raced well in last to finish 2nd to the one below. Gets significant post relief after drawing the 8 hole last week. Camera shy 5-year-old could get a nice pocket ride and looks like a main player.
4- Gigondas (5/2)-Beat this kind after getting an early lead and not looking back. That was the 2nd start for Moreau and was bet down to 7/5. McNair returns and took its 1st picture last week in at least 19 starts and looks like the one to beat.

    Race 8

2-Hang On Baby (3-1)-Appeared to be handled cautiously and raced from the back last week after consecutive breaks in stride. This is JMac's choice over #1, The Stable's entry. The only mare in this bunch likes to win, and should be in play much sooner tonight.
6-Ritson (5/2)-Grinded up 1st over and took control but lost to the horse who took his cover, and did finish willingly. The others who hit the board aren't in this field and McClure should work a smooth trip with this post draw.

    Race 9

2-Villefranche As (6-1)-Spanked a soft bunch at London and now this veteran mare comes back to the big track and JMac will steer. Won here on 11-4 and in the next race stepped-up and broke stride, then a judges scratch and was put on the shelf. This will be the 4th start since 11-14. Willing to swing for a solid price and hope all systems are go.
3-Mr Contestant (3-1)-Was claimed from Fellows on 1-2 and the same conditioner claimed back on 1-9. Back in at the same class and draws inside which should help. Likes to race near the top of the stack and that can happen.
6-Hp Royal Theo (5/2)-Dropped to this level in last, was bet down to an odds-on choice and faded after working hard to get on the point. Roy will be steering again and should be able to work a more efficient trip.

    Race 10

1-Outlaw Aceofspades (5/2)-Got on the engine from post 9 last week and came a head short of a picture. Fits with this crew and Cullen should be able to work a less taxing journey from this post.
6-Choreographer (10-1)-Raced well in the past 2 efforts here and just missed last week off an efficient trip. McNair takes over and might be able to squeeze a little more out of this 8-year-old. Has done good work at Wbsb hitting the board in 22 of 42 races with 8 pictures.

    0.20 Late Pick 4

    3,4/2,6/2,3,6/1,6

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #4
    Picks Notes
#3 Royal Take Charge She was pretty sharp up top in the debut run at Churchill, and she's fast enough to find a really good spot right up on the splits while getting around two turns. Excited to see what she's made of here.
#2 Non Violence She was very impressive from a bit off the splits in the debut run going short here last month, and she should be able to get a similar trip to the top choice while stretching out for the first time.
#4 Judy's Way The top pair are both second-timers with high ceilings, but she's sort of the proven form in this spot with reliable running lines including a good try with similar last time out. Wouldn't be a shock, but I think one of the top two will land this.
Race Summary Royal Take Charge and Non Violence both bring sharp debut scores with them to this route spot, but I think the former gets the edge off the Churchill debut run.

    Fair Grounds - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#3 Uphold the Law Don't think he's going to offer much of a price, but he's drawn better here after fighting from the fence when last seen at Colonial in August. He's obviously got a lot of talent, but there are probably some issues here, too, based on the spacing of his races. Might fire a big one.
#1 Hunter John He's going to take the worst of it on the inside, but I think he's the most committed pace type and might be able to try to shake free of the top choice just a bit into the turn. He's probably better on turf but still seems like an okay fit here.
#5 Omaha Red He's a pretty reliable pace-spying type, and he draws well to track the top pair early on. Think he probably finds one or two of these too tough today, but he's a player for a piece.
Race Summary Uphold the Law looks the part in here while racing off the break, and he should be in line for a perfect trip pressing the speed drawn on the fence.

    Fair Grounds - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#4 Golden Star She turned in a decent debut run with some trouble going short on the turf at Hawthorne, and she has some upside while getting around two turns for a team that has been good with these types the last couple years. Perfect forward trip waiting for her in a race without a ton of pace.
#7 Best Performer She should appreciate getting back on the grass here, as she ran pretty well in the Keeneland debut on the turf when having some traffic troubles. Capable player in an underwhelming race for the level.
#2 Audaciousness She can bounce back here after tracking the pace and fading in the lane in the same common race as Best Performer at Keeneland in October, but she returns now with Lasix and has a lot of room to bounce back.
Race Summary Golden Star has stretchout pace for an Amoss barn that has hit at 30% with a positive ROI in these maiden turf routes here the last couple years, and she's a really strong lean for me on the late part of the card.

    Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

    Sam Houston - Race #3
    Picks Notes
#3 ROLLIN CHROME (6-5) Plays to a steady beat in allowance company, due for a win.
#4 AMERICAN COALMINER (6-1) Well-traveled 4yo has proven versatile and runs well fresh.
#6 ROYALS’ LIL DIVA (5-2 Romped in Minnesota-bred stakes, disappeared in ‘Oaks.’
Race Summary In her last seven short sprints in allowance company, ROLLING CHROME rallied for a win, four seconds and two thirds. Her consistency should pay off with a victory in an overall weaker field than she has been facing. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-ALL trifecta.

    Sam Houston - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#4 MASTER RED (6-1) Drops, gets new pilot, has ingredients for an upset victory.
#8 VINDICATO (10-1) Starts fresh for new connections, found blinkers of little help in Pennsylvania.
#6 PRATHER (2-1) Well-beaten favorite in his last three starts for Asmussen.
Race Summary MASTER RED has speed, exits MSW company, faces several cutback routers and is a live price play at the shortest distance of his career. He was last seen in September when he stopped in a race won by Ninja Warrior, a recent starter allowance runaway winner at Oaklawn Park. Play a 4-ALL exacta.

    Sam Houston - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#3 NICE NEIGHBOR (3-1) Caught by fave in allowance sprint, might go non-stop on the stretch-out.
#8 RUBMEFORLUCK (9-2) Edged away in well-bet debut, working well since then.
#5 LUCKY DEPUTY (9-5) Second in both starts on grass, but winners ran poorly in their next start.
Race Summary NICE NEIGHBOR controlled the pace and finished second in a stakes race at this distance, then got caught by the 4-to-5 favorite in a 6F sprint last out. Her dam was an allowance winner on the grass. Bet to win and place.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #3 - Post: 1:41pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,400 Class Rating: 82

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

    #5 HURTS SO BAD (ML=4/1)
    #2 BAYOU SHACK (ML=10/1)

HURTS SO BAD - When this jock and handler combine forces you have to take a look. Batista and Meraz have been terrific together. I think this gelding is coming into top form. Was in an Allowance race at Hawthorne last out. That race had a class number of 92 and he is moving down in this event. A certain strong challenger. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where he finished in his last race (fifth). Should rebound in today's race, with some decent odds. BAYOU SHACK - This jockey and conditioner have a high winning percentage together. Bracho is back for another affair today after sitting atop this animal for the first ride on January 2nd and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Bracho gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. Gelding shipped to this track and won; now goes for two in a row. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should run well today. Looked very good in last race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. A quick turnaround means Zook thinks he can do it again. I like to bet on this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp effort within the last 30 days.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #1A PRIVATE CONNIE (ML=2/1), #1 ONEMORANDTHECHECK (ML=2/1), #7 DOCTOR WU (ML=3/1),

PRIVATE CONNIE - Dec 16th is the last time we've seen this gelding around. Have to be a little bit leery. ONEMORANDTHECHECK - The Brain tells me to keep away from thoroughbreds in short distance events that haven't finished in the money in sprint affairs of late. Finished fifth in his most recent race with a disappointing speed rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field. DOCTOR WU - Not easy to play any horse in a sprint affair if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last couple of months.

Putting our cash on #5 HURTS SO BAD to win. Have to have odds of at least 9/5 or better though

    # 4 ITSMYLUCKYGIRL 5/2

    # 6 SUNSET PAULA JO 3/1

    # 7 FAST N GONE 2/1

ITSMYLUCKYGIRL is the best wager in this race. Her 97 average has this mare with among the most respectable Equibase Speed Figures in this event. Seems to have a quite good class edge based on the most recent company kept. Has run admirably when running a dirt sprint race. SUNSET PAULA JO - Is a key contender - given the 101 speed figure from her most recent race. With a nice class rating average of 103, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this group. FAST N GONE - She has recorded very good numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well versus this field. Formidable jockey and conditioner combo winning 32 percent of their races working together.

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

    #4 MASTER RED (ML=6/1)
    #6 PRATHER (ML=2/1)

MASTER RED - This gelding likes to be near the lead. Today's race is a shorter distance and should promote his chances of winning. The September 30th contest at Remington Park was at a class level of (69). Dropping to a lower class level considerably, so he should be in a good spot. PRATHER - Rider jumped on this gelding's back for the first ride on Nov 30th. Should know the horse even better in this race. Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter distance should be beneficial.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SPEND AGAIN (ML=3/1), #7 IRA CHAMP (ML=4/1), #2 LIL BEAN MACHINE (ML=8/1),

SPEND AGAIN - I'd like to see more preferred recent outings with morning line of 3/1. In any event of 5 furlongs, I like to support a contender that has been looking good in sprint events recently. Mediocre rating in the last race at Remington Park at 1 mile 70 yards. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much today. IRA CHAMP - It looks like too much zip is signed up in this race. This speed merchant will most likely get baked on the front end. LIL BEAN MACHINE - Ran way back when on October 13th. We should see a race or two. This pony ran a substandard speed rating last time around the track. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that figure.

    STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #4 MASTER RED on top if we're getting at least 5/2 odds

    The Walker Group Picks

    # 7 TOIL AND TROUBLE 6/1

    # 6 POPS AWESOME 10/1

    # 2 DRAW THE FOUL 6/1

I think TOIL AND TROUBLE is a competitive choice. Has been moving admirably and has among the most competitive speed in the race for today's distance. Could best this group of animals based on the speed rating - 83 - of his last race. The average Equibase class figure alone makes this entrant a contender. POPS AWESOME - Solid average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this racer a key contender.
