Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    July 10, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a 12-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool and rolls in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-Sheriff N (7/2)-Has had trouble battling the $40k and $50K claimers here but this isn't that kind. The connections have been clicking and this veteran should enjoy the company.
6-Buddy Hill (5/2)-This is a soft spot for Buddy but since the end of May he has had issues. It's either been breaking stride, poor performances or scratches. The 1st call pilot Kakaley is at the controls, so will use and hope the price isn't tiny and he is ready for action.
7-Braeview Bondi A (8-1)-Doesn't usually show big gate speed at Yonkers, but this is a beatable field. Using with the thinking Brennan may have the pedal down from the word "go". Will swing for a price in a race without a standout.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

3-Groovy Joe (9/2)-Bumps up after winning gate to wire in last and has been sharp since mid-May. Loses Bartlett to the one below but Stratton has driven before and should offer a square price.
6-Moonlight Shadow (6-1)-Engblom veteran found the water too deep facing Open company last time. Beat this kind 2 back at this class and was a close 2nd the race before that. Will look for a big try on the drop.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

3-My Ultimate Star A (4-1)-Comes off an even effort against better. This will be the 2nd start in the Koch barn on the trainer switch and should be in the hunt at the wire.
4-Rolling With Sam (2-1)-Steps up after trying to wire the field in the 1st start here since the beginning of May. Had missed a race before the last start and should be better acclimated now. Best to respect, has been beaten this kind and tougher back in March at YR.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

1-Sonny Weaver N (7/2)-Recent form has been a bit dull but comes back in sequence tonight. Has won 7 of 14 races at Yonkers and could be sitting on a big try.
2-Ozone Blue Chip (7/2)-Bumped up after a win and didn't do much. Drops back down to the level of the previous race, which was an efficient win. Can be forwardly placed and should be used versus this kind.
5-Nandolo N (9/5)-Drops to a level for a win but hasn't raced for real since 6-5 and comes off a sick scratch. The qualifier was okay and should be tough to beat if dialed on high.

    $1.00 Pick 4

    3,6,7/3,6/3,4/1,2,5

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
    Picks Notes
#1 Legend of Charlie Price might be a touch better than the 2/5 offering off the bench last out, but I like him better as a bit of a finisher, and I think this race is going to set up nicely for someone who can relax and let it all unfold early on.
#3 Colonel Poppy Riser graduated last time out after chasing a few of these in previous races, and I think he's in line for a good trip to spy the speed and get first over while potentially letting a couple sharper pace players do the dirty work early.
#6 Youmustbea Weasley He's an honest finisher with a long string of underneath shares with similar, and he probably lands in that same kind of space today -- very logical win contender at another underlaid price who is more likely to settle underneath.
Race Summary Legend of Charlie was a bit flat after chasing the pace early on when returning off the layoff last out, but I think he might get a cozy kind of trip while some of the quicker players try to cross over from outside draws.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#7 Honor Leo Jean This feels like a really logical spot for him after a couple decent tries with starter company on the turf at Tampa, and he should find a good tactical run of things.
#4 America's Guest I thought enough of her last out to give him a chance in that allowance spot, but he failed to fire behind the chalk that day. This is a better fit on class for him, and a bounce-back effort wouldn't surprise.
#10 Pittsburgh The form is all over the place -- and mostly bad -- but he's a fresh face on new footing today who might line up well enough with the locals. Think he's a bit of a reach, but he might belong on the deeper cover tickets that lean on solid plays elsewhere.
Race Summary Honor Leo Jean seems like a good fit in here while trying the locals for the first time, as the form and running style seem likely to play well, and I think most of the rest of these offer more questions than answers at this point in time.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#7 Heavenly Hash Her form can be touch and go, but I'm hoping she's able to get back to something more like that May effort here when going short. Toss the route try and she has a little appeal at a price.
#9 My Lily Mae Finisher makes a good bit of sense here with her baseline, but she has had a lot of chances and isn't typically a major win threat by midstretch. Her regular stuff would do here, but probably not at the kind of price that makes it worth it.
#1 Magic Life Price might be a little better this time around without an Ortiz brother in the saddle, and I think she'd be well served by trying to rate just a touch again today.
Race Summary Heavenly Hash has some price appeal after the route flop last out, and she has some chance to come alive late and get past these in a race without a ton of reliable form to bank on.

    Finger Lakes - Race #5
    Picks Notes
#8 LET’S MAGA (6-1) Right set-up, right spot, right price in speed-laden field.
#1 TWICE SMITTEN (7-2) Took step back in last pair, still merits respect, can stalk and pounce from rail.
#5 HEARTBUSTINGIRL (6-1) Had tune-up, nearing $100k in Finger Lakes earnings.
Race Summary LET’S MAGA burned money in her second start this season but she is worth a win and place bet at an inflated price in this spot. She gets plenty of pace to run at and finished third behind Sweet Shallots (14 wins, $203k), a recent 5-length winner under these conditions, the last time she ran at this level.
    Finger Lakes - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#2 ICE LOVE (5-2) Can’t go beyond after strong comeback at this distance in new barn.
#5 DANSEUR D’ORO (3-1) Won ‘completely geared down’ two back in her first try beyond 6F.
#7 FLURRY OF ROSES (4-1) Flurry of good efforts, save for the fact she seldom wins.
Race Summary ICE LOVE made a good first impression for her new connections off an eight-month layoff. She followed the 3-wide move of the 9-to-5 winner, wandered a bit at the top of the stretch and went down fighting. Play 2-5 and 2-7 exactas.
    Finger Lakes - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#10 ZUCCARACE (6-1) Useful front-end try in debut against better, shortens up, draws outside.
#4 ESCAPE MISSION (3-1) Disqualified from front-end win in the slop on drop to this level.
#6 DARK MARKET (5-1) Took money off slow work tab but didn’t factor, gets second-time Lasix.
Race Summary ZUCCARACE, pressured on the lead by the 3-to-5 winner, tired in the stretch in MSW company. He can use his speed well from the outside post on the cutback to 5-1/2F for high-percentage connections. Bet to win and place.

Rotation #208194 - Argentine Primera Division | Gameweek 24 - Monday Free Pick Boca Juniors -110 vs Huracan @ 8:30 ET - The Boca Juniors are 6-3-3 at home while Huracan is 1-3-8 on the road. The fact the visitors have won just 1 match all season on the road and the hosts have only 3 home losses all season means excellent line value here with the fair price on the hosts. I know that a draw burns us here but I don't see that happening. These are Buenos Aires clubs and so there certainly is no love lost between these foes! The hosts will be dead set on claiming the full 3 points here and they also could be getting back some key reinforcements from injury as well. Lay the fair price here! Free Pick BOCA JUNIORS -110

    Parx Racing - Race #1 - Post: 12:40pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 68

    Rating:

    #5 BEYOND A MILLION (ML=8/1)
    #2 FAST INTENTIONS (ML=9/2)
    #7 VALERIE FIRST (ML=7/2)

BEYOND A MILLION - I like this racer. Should be familiar with this class level since she ran against the same type last time around the track at Parx Racing. FAST INTENTIONS - This mare is in exceptional physical condition right now. Finished third last time around the track and comes back soon. Took a big class drop last out, and I think she may have needed it. Farro enters her at a similar class level today. I'd expect an improved performance. This horse is a hot commodity. Claimed in her last two races. VALERIE FIRST - This thoroughbred coming off a nice contest in the last 30 days is a serious competitor in my opinion. The improved speed figures over the last 3 races is strong. Lake drops her in this race fit and ready to go.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MISS DILLINGHAM (ML=8/5), #1 WONDER CITY (ML=6/1), #4 BRODY SLAM (ML=8/1),

MISS DILLINGHAM - You should normally wager against chalk that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last 3 weeks. This horse hasn't been around in either of her last couple of races. WONDER CITY - Hard to wager on at 6/1 odds after the two most recent showings. BRODY SLAM - Speed ratings tell a tale of lessening form. This questionable contender ran a disappointing speed rating last out. She shouldn't run much better and will probably get beat in today's race running that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 BEYOND A MILLION on the nose if you can get odds of 3/1 or more

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 7 NATHANIEL'S HOPE 9/5
    # 6 VAMONOS 9/2
    # 2 ROUND ROBIN 15/1

My selection in here is NATHANIEL'S HOPE. Must be considered a definite contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. He has posted quite good figures under today's conditions and will most likely fare well against this group. Should best this group of horses here, showing formidable figures of late. VAMONOS - Overall the speed figures of this horse look quite good in this competition. Had one of the strongest Equibase Speed Figures of this group of animals in his last contest.

    Prairie Meadows - Race #6 - Post: 6:07pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,325 Class Rating: 60

    Rating:

    #1 ANNIEWAY U WANT IT (ML=6/1)
    #2 SHELBY TO (ML=4/1)
    #5 DIAMOND OF EKATI (ML=2/1)

ANNIEWAY U WANT IT - The most dangerous animal in racing is the lone speed horse. If they let her get away early they probably won't catch her. This mare has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of McShane. Better watch out for this angle. Taking a trip down in the class scale; has the capability to make her presence felt. This mare should be in tip-top shape, this far into her form cycle. SHELBY TO - This mare is in excellent physical condition right now. Finished third last race out and comes back promptly. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. DIAMOND OF EKATI - Mare's last work was second fastest of the day for the distance. Took a big class drop last out, and I think she may have needed it. Clark enters her at a similar class level today. I'd expect an improved performance.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 TAPTHATLUCK (ML=8/5), #4 BARBED WIRE (ML=3/1),

TAPTHATLUCK - This chalk horse may be out of shape without any recent drills. BARBED WIRE - 3/1 odds isn't enough for this entrant when looking at the most recent efforts.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 ANNIEWAY U WANT IT to win if we can get at least 2/1 odds
    EXACTA WAGERS: 1 with [2,5]

    TRIFECTA WAGERS:

Race 3 - Maiden Special Weight - 8.0f on the Turf. Purse: $16500 Class Rating: 75

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 116 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 9 SAILOR'S CHANCE 5/2
    # 8 SHANNONRUN 3/1
    # 13 DUST STORM 5/2

I've got to go with SAILOR'S CHANCE. Has very strong Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager for this race. Has been running soundly lately and ought to be up on the front end early on. Is a strong contender based on figures garnered lately under today's conditions. SHANNONRUN - Has to be given a shot based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last competition. With a nice class fig average of 80, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this group. DUST STORM - There is a solid possibility of an increase in speed as this colt changes blinkers (off) for the first time. I would give the nod to this colt on the jock and trainer numbers alone.
