CLEVELAND STATE

The Vikings host the Bulldogs in at the Goodman Arena in Cleveland in a Horizon League opener for both teams. Cleveland State returns 4 starters from last year's 21-win squad as Gary Waters' squad was picked as the team to beat in the Horizon this season. Meanwhile, Butler lost 4 starters from last year's 30-win NCAA unit. With the Vikings looking to avenge a loss to the Bulldogs in last year's Horizon League tournament, look for CSU to have their way here tonight.

RUTGERS over Louisville by 16
Did anyone catch that freight train tearing threw Piscataway? It’s Greg
Schiano’s Scarlet Knights and they’re taking no prisoners during an impressive
5-game winning streak. They have also covered 6 of 7 and show no signs
of slowing down this week, boasting a healthy 5-1 ATS mark in their Last
Home Game when playing with revenge. Schiano’s crew is also 7-0 against
the number with revenge versus a sub .500 foe. And thanks to Louisville’s
4-game losing skid that’s seen its defense shredded for 132 points, that’s
exactly where Kragthorpe’s Redbirds reside – under the water level. The
visitors desperately need a win to become bowl eligible but, at 6-6, that may
not even be enough to guarantee an invitation. With the series visitor 0-3
SU and ATS recently, we’ll be jumping on the bandwagon…err, freight train,
known as Rutgers. All aboard

Scott Rickenbach’s 2* (Top Play) Pittsburgh Penguins Money Line (+) @ Carolina @ 7:05 PM ET – We suffered a very tough beat with Pittsburgh last night as they never trailed the entire game but the Rangers got the tying goal late in regulation to send the game to overtime. The game then proceeded to the shootout and the Rangers got the win there. The disappointing loss will have the Penguins highly motivated tonight. Yes, this is a back to back situation but the Pens just had one of these over the weekend and they responded very favorably. The situation was very similar to. They blew a one-goal lead to Buffalo on Friday in what ended up being a frustrating defeat. They then turned around and walloped the New Jersey Devils 4 to 1 the very next night! We look for similar results here in what is a similar situation. We are well aware of the fact that the Canes just fired their coach but the timing was very strange to say the least. The Canes last played on Sunday and that was a 4 to 1 loss to the Ducks. Why did they wait until yesterday to make this move? Now, instead of giving new coach Paul Maurice a chance to get re-acclimated with the team (he coached here previously for a number of years), he steps right in the day before game day. Sure the Hurricanes may try to give a better effort after this move but will this team immediately be “firing on all cylinders”? We highly doubt that. Also, we are well aware of the goal-tending situation for both clubs and although Pittsburgh may go with rookie John Curry (whom we like by the way), Carolina is likely to go with back-up Michael Leighton due to the injury to Cam Ward. The Pens are familiar with Leighton and they like what they’ve seen as they are 3-0 against him in his career. As for the Pens Curry, even though he lost his first start, he played very well and he’ll be ready here. The Canes also have never faced him and this is an advantage to the netminder in our opinion. The Penguins will be hungry after last night’s loss and note that only twice in the first two months of this season has Pittsburgh been in a losing streak. In other words, they know how to bounce back off of a loss and that’s what we fully expect here! Carolina is just 1-4 in their last 5 games and they’ve scored just 1.6 goals per game in regulation of those five games (the lone win came in overtime). The Canes fortunes aren’t going to change overnight and we’re getting the Penguins with great line value here. Play Pittsburgh on the money line as a Top Play selection.

6:45:00 PM OVER 51,RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS
-vs-Louisville Cardinals
Scott Rickenbach’s 1* (regular play) OVER the total in Rutgers vs Louisville @ 7:45 PM ET – The Cardinals are 5-6 and need a win to have a shot at the bowl season. The Scarlet Knights are 6-5 but need a win to guarantee a bowl slot plus improve the type of bowl they go to by finishing with a 7-5 mark. With two solid QB’s in Teel for Rutgers and Cantwell for the Cardinals, there will be plenty of offense in this one. Though it will be chilly this evening it will not be brutally cold. Earlier showers during the day should be moved out of the area and the winds are expected to be light. With light winds and no precipitation, the conditions are just right for an absolute aerial assault for both teams in this match-up. Rutgers will look to throw all game long. Their passing attack has been one of the best in the country during their five game winning streak and they’re facing a Louisville secondary that has been depleted by injuries. Also encouraging the Scarlet Knights to throw early and often is that their running game is not what it once was. Additionally, the Cardinals run defense was solid this season, at least until they ran into West Virginia two weeks ago. Therefore, Rutgers knows that the best way to beat Louisville is through the air. As for the Cardinals, they will be forced to throw here. They will need to do it just to keep pace with Rutgers high powered attack and the Cards have the weapons to attack a Rutgers secondary that is known for poor tackling. Just get the ball in the hands of the speedy Cardinals wide receivers, and QB Cantwell knows that he can have a big day! In what could be Cantwell’s final college game, coach Steve Kragthorpe also will be looking to assist him in any way he can to put up big numbers in what would be his final audition for the NFL. Cantwell has the skills and they will be on display Thursday night. Yes, Louisville only scored 21 points in their most recent game but they were done in by five turnovers as they actually had nearly 500 yards of offense in that game. Also, the Scarlet Knights game stayed under two weeks ago but it was because they faced a very weak Army offense that only managed three points. This is a much bigger challenge for the Scarlet Knights defense this week and we foresee a back and forth high scoring affair! Play OVER the total in Rutgers as a regular selection.

ASA 5* Top Play Colorado Avalanche Money Line +120 @ Nashville @ 7:05 Central Time: The Avalanche have been a very streaky team this season and it’s time once again to ride them here. The Avs are coming off of back to back wins where they scored 10 goals in the process and that kind of offensive production is what really helps kick this team into another gear. Also, now that it’s finally been announced that captain Joe Sakic will not be coming back any time soon, the Avalanche can actually focus even more on what they’re doing on the ice rather than worrying about which game Sakic would be making his return. The Avalanche have won three of their last four meetings with the Predators and Colorado goalie Peter Budaj has enjoyed facing Nashville. Budaj has allowed a total of just two goals in his last three starts against the Predators. The Preds haven’t been faring well at home either in recent games. Part of the problem has been a road-dominated schedule as it’s been hard for the Predators to develop any consistency at home. The end result? The Predators haven’t won at home since November 1st and their trying to avoid their fourth straight loss on home ice tonight. We doubt that the Preds will be successful in doing so. The Avs come into this game very relaxed and confident after the way their last two games have gone. Also, Colorado’s power play has been stronger than the Predators this season. The Predators offense has been held to two goals or less in five of their last seven games and the Preds simply won’t be able to keep up with a high powered Avs offense that is clicking again and comes in confident after putting a 6-spot on the Minnesota Wild on Monday! ASA 5* Top Play selection on Colorado on Thursday Night!

3 Unit Play.Take Under in Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers

The Chargers have not been scoring many points of late and their season is all but over as they will not be able to catch Denver in the AFC West. San Diego has not scored over 20 points in their last four games and thus this play sets up perfectly for the under. Oakland has one of the worst offenses in the league and they have not went over this posted total since week 4 of the season. We will not worry if the Bolts can cover this big number and just collect with the under. San Diego 24, Oakland 14.

THE WUNDERDOG PREMIUM NHL

Game: New Jersey at Philadelphia (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on New Jersey +135 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 6.8)

The Flyers have been a very streaky team this season. They opened winless in their first six, then went four without a loss, then dropped three, and are now cooled down off a six-game stretch without a loss. They have but an OT win to show for their last three. The Devils had a lengthy slide where they managed just two wins in 10 games, but have heated up and have now put five of six in the win column, scoring 25 goals in the process. Two streaky teams here with the Flyers cycling down while the Devils are cycling up. This makes for a live dog here, so I'll take the Devils in this one.

Game: Buffalo at Florida (7:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Florida +105 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.2)

Buffalo opened the season strong, but there has been nothing strong about their recent play. The Sabres are just 3-9 in their last 12 games, and that includes four straight road losses. On the road, they have been outscored 18-9, or a 2-1 ratio - huge in hockey. The Panthers are arguably playing their best hockey of the season right now as they have tied their season long winning streak at two games and have taken three out of their last five games, with the other two decided by OT and a shootout. The difference has been Craig Anderson behind the net. The Panthers have five wins with him between the pipes in nine starts, while they have been just 5-10 behind Vokoun. I like the Panthers as a live home dog here.

Game: Toronto at Phoenix (9:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on Toronto +120 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 6)

The Coyotes have produced winning results on home ice, but most of that winning occurred early in the season. They were out of the gate 5-2 on home ice, but have since been just able to log two wins in their last five and have managed just a 12-12 split in goals during this stretch. Toronto took what appears to be an obligatory loss in their last outing at San Jose (unbeaten at home), but won handily in their previous road tilt in LA 3-1. The Coyotes have struggled to a 0-4 mark against the Northeast in their last four, and have been horrible following a win at 5-13. They are also just 3-12 when they are on one day rest in their last 15. Not a lot to like about the home side here, so I'm backing the Maple Leafs.

5 Unit Play. #68 Take Phoenix -130 over Toronto (9:05 pm NHL Center Ice) Game of the Week. The Coyotes will be riding a ride hot goalie in Mikael Tellqvist, as he is allowing just over two goals per game this season. The Coyotes have been a solid play at Jobing.com Arena this season scoring points in eight of 12 games. Phoenix has won its last two versus Toronto, including a 5-1 home win last year. We expect a similar performance this evening, as we collect big in the process as well.

1500* - Rutgers, 500* - San Diego Chargers, 500* - Oklahoma Sooners
The mix of Steve Kragthorpe, and Louisville has been as compatible as oil-and-water, as Louisville comes into North Jersey mired in a 4-game skid both straight up, and against the spread. It hasn't helped that the 'Ville sports 14, count 'em 14 turnovers in those last 4 games!!!!

Even with double-digits, I am not going with the Cardinals who need a win to become bowl-eligible, as things are going too well right now for Greg Schiano's team.

Rutgers has turned around a 1-5 start with 5 straight wins, and 4 straight covers, and this is the final home game of senior QB Mike Teel's career in New Brunswick. Teel has been bombing away during the Scarlet Knights surge, as the kid has tossed 13 TD passes in his last 4 games. Couple that with the fact the Knights defense has stepped up, allowing 17 points or less in 5 of their last 6 games, and this one has "blowout" written all over it!

Louisville won last season's meeting, 41-38 as the 2 1/2-point favorite in Kentucky, tonight's game seems like a million years removed from last year's battle.

All Rutgers, all night!

*** NFL "PRIME-TIME" 2* WAGER *** (POSSIBLE UPGRADE)

I wanted to get this Bet up here early because I have been informed that the "Outfits" will be looking to Buy up all the +10, that they can find...and right now, there are still many outs using this line, based on the work coming in on San Diego...

I also want to point out that if we see that the concensus is willing to take this down to where a Teaser on SD can will offer them at a FG or less...it will be a very telling sign that they also agree with the Sharps, that this line is just way too high...

For starters, the Chargers have been way over-valued by LVSC, who would not lower them in their rankings, even when they were under .500...with many AFC teams appearing much stronger...And because of their lack to adjust, we have seen the Chargers a favorite in 8 of their L/10 games...

More importantly, the Chargers have only won "1" game over their L/6...and that was a 1 POINT WIN AT HOME vs KC !!!

Now you may feel that since I am focusing on the Chargers, that this may be more of a play against them...than it is on the Raiders...And, that may not be too far from the truth, because when you are looking for an edge...realizing that the one side is a much higher favorite than they should be, is just as good as realizing that the opponent is stronger than the line refelcts...

But in this scenario tonight...there are much more factors in play...

When these 2 teams met for the 1st time this season...the Final score would make one assume that the Chargers had no problem disposing of the Raiders...especially since the final score shows a 10pt road win for SD...But dig a little deeper and you will find that the Raiders were winning "15-0" at the Half...and "15-3" heading into the 4th quarter...And if not for a handful of missed tackles when SD was looking to run out the clock...they would have only gotten a 3pt win, since LT broke a long run for a TD in the final minute...

Also, I know that the AFC West may not be 100% decided, but after losing 3 "must-win" games in a row...I would think that the Chargers, who were a fav to represent the AFC in this year's Super Bowl...are feeling a bit frustrated and definately lack the kind of confidence you want from a team laying double-digits in the NFL...

The history between the 2 clubs, forces the oddsmakers to offer those backing the Raiders even more Value...and that is just fine by me...And I truely believe that this game is just as important, if not more so...for the Raiders, who with a Win could move to a tie with the Chargers...than it is for SD who is more or less looking to next year already and possibly planning golf trips for January...

Bottom line, I liked the Raiders coming in when I factored in the motivation, especially after their 1st meeting...And then after making my own line SD -7 (-120)...and seeing that I can get +10...I liked it even more...And finally, after speaking with some books and sharps alike...and finding out that the betting public is really backing the Chargers, while the Outfits are looking at the Dog...It helped confirm the wager for me...

We may look to Upgrade this to a 3* BEST BET...because as I explained, the 3* will be chosen after the Card is Finalized and I get an opportunity to choose the strongest of the bunch...

So for now, let's go ahead and grab the +10 on the Raiders...as our NFL "PRIME-TIME" PLAY of the DAY...VR

Oakland Raiders (POD) +10

61% in College Basketball 2008-2009.
Yesterday: 2-1
*Charlotte/OKC Over (POD): Winner.
*Toledo Outright over UMASS: Winner.
*Middle Tennessee State +5.5: Loss.
2-0 on comp selections as well Celtics -14.5 and Clippers +11.

The line has gone both ways since the opening, Oakland opened up as a +9 point dog and it has gone down in some books to +8.5 and up in some books to +9.5 and even 10. The total has gone down roughly 0.5 points to 42.5 in most books. San Diego comes off losing to my Falcons at home, they beat this team 28-18 on the road earlier this year so Oakland does have revenge, the public favors the Chargers to a tune of 60% here, but Oakland has played well of late. Yes, I know they lost to the Chiefs at home, but many saw that coming given how much the Chiefs have improved over the last few weeks in covering games, and heck, Oakland beat Denver on the road outright by 3 touchdowns, lost 15-17 to the Dolphins and Russell has now thrown for more than 1700 yards. We keep waiting for San Diego to show up, but this team is 1-5 of their last 6. You want to know something intersting? When San Diego wins, they cover. When San Diego does not cover, they lose the game outright - they have done that at least the last 10 games. I think Oakland can hang tough here as San Diego just has not been overly impressive of late. Look, the bottom line is this, Oakland has revenge, they have been playing better, they come off a tough loss to the Chiefs at home, had covered back to back dog lines on the road of 10 against Denver (winning outright) and 9 at Miami, losing by 2, this game is on national television and San Diego hasn't overly impressed over the last 1.5 months as they are 1-5 ATS over their last 6. I'll take the points.

Kent State +2 or +1 over St. Mary's. Look the bottom line in this game is that Kent state is the more dynamic team in particular at home. I understand that SM is 4-1 but I promise you that winning percentage is going to come down. KS is the same team that lost to Kansas by 20 plus points and lost to TA&M by just a few points not to mention took Illinois to overtime. Heck this team beat St. louis ok the road and Nc Wilmington while SM could barely get passed scrub teams and not to mention lost outright to UTEP as 9 point chalk at home. Let's take the team with the better Nin conference coming off a tough road trip with the far more dynamic offense to pound this SM team outright and in fact by DD here.
