EXPERT: Ted Sevransky
TITLE: Saturday's Bowl Bash
EVALUATION: Play Not Evaluated.
REASON FOR PICK: Double digit favorites have been an absolute disaster for bettors to support in early bowl games. The only reason that these teams are favored by this type of a margin to begin with is because of their pre-season expectations; expectations that they clearly did not live up to. South Florida is a classic example of one such team. The Bulls entered the season as a dark horse national title contender. At a minimum, Jim Leavitt’s team was expected to compete for the Big East crown. Instead, they disappointed their supporters all year long, finishing with a 2-5 mark in conference play. Their signature victory for the season came back in September, a three point, come-from-behind win against a Kansas squad that didn’t live up to expectations either. The Bulls won only twice all year by double digit margins – beating 3-9 Syracuse at home, and dominating NC State in a game where the Wolfpack were without their starting quarterback.

Junior quarterback Matt Grothe has not really improved since his freshman year, with a lower QB rating as both a sophomore and a junior as he had in his first year as the starter. Grothe is prone to both interceptions and fumbles – turnovers were a problem for the Bulls this year. No running back on the team gained even 400 yards – Grothe was the leading rusher as well. None of Grothe’s receivers developed into a ‘go-to’ pass catcher, with Jessie Hester’s 557 receiving yards and Taurus Johnson’s five receiving touchdowns leading the team in both categories. The Bulls ranked in the middle of the NCAA pack in both rushing and passing offense. This is not a team that consistently puts up points in bunches, and it’s very difficult to win bowl games by double digit margins without an offense that is capable of exploding.

The location and situation surrounding this bowl game does not favor South Florida one iota. They closed the season on a 1-4 SU run, watching their chances at a bigger and better bowl game slip away, week by week. Normally, a home state game is a positive factor. In this game, the prospect of sleeping in their own beds during bowl season is not a good one, particularly for a game that nobody, from the coaching staff on down, seems to be particularly excited about. Expect a lethargic effort from the ‘home’ team here.

Memphis is no juggernaut, but they are certainly capable of competing, which is all we can ask for out of our double digit underdogs. The Tigers have been running the football effectively, averaging nearly than 300 yards per game on the ground over their final four contests. QB Arkelon Hall is fully healthy after missing a few games in early November. Five different receivers caught at least 28 passes and two touchdowns. While the Tigers defense is not a particularly stout unit, their level of enthusiasm for this bowl game in comparison to South Florida’s lack of excitement makes this underdog worthy of support. 3* Take Memphis.

4 Unit Play. #104 Take Dallas over Baltimore (Saturday 8:15 pm NFL Network) The Ravens are coming off an emotional game last Sunday against Pittsburgh in which they dominated for 59 minutes only to come up short in the end. The Cowboys are playing outstanding defense and expect them to pressure young Flacco for 60 minutes and force him into a couple of key turnovers. The Ravens are just 2-5 ATS as a non-divisional underdog and Dallas will close out Texas Stadium in style with an impressive victory. The Ravens got killed in their other NFC road game, 30-10 against the NY Giants, a team that Dallas beat last week. Both teams need this victory but Dallas has much more balance and that will be the difference on Saturday night.

DOC

3 Unit Play. #204 Take Under in Fresno State vs. Colorado State (New Mexico Bowl 2:30 pm ESPN) Both teams have had lackluster seasons and are lucky to be in a bowl game. We expect this to be a close game throughout and thus we will not worry about who comes out on top and just collect with the under. The Bulldogs have not reached thirty points in their last four games averaging just 21 ½ points per game in those contests. The Rams averaged just 24 points per game for the season and I fully expect this one to be played in the twenties as we will collect with whomever comes out on top.

Ai Simulator 7* graded play on Arizona (CFB) – AiS shows an 82% probability that Arizona will win this game by 4 or more points. Supporting this graded play is a 76% winning money line system that has gone 37-12 since 2002. Play on all teams with a money line of +135 to -155 that are an average rushing team gaining 3.5 to 4.3 YPR and is facing a team with an average rushing D allowing 3.5 to 4.3 YPR and after allowing 100 or less rushing yards last game. BYU finds itself in several poor roles for this matchup noting they are 1-7 ATS (-6.7 Units) after the first month of the season this season; 4-20 ATS (-18.0 Units) after a 2 game road trip since 1992. Although the Pac-10 was weaker this season in terms of its’ depth than in recent years, Arizona had a far tougher schedule than BYU. I always go back to the beginning fo the year when Tennessee was a potential contender for the SEC Title and lost to UCLA. Then the following week UCLA suffered it’s biggest loss since 1929 when they were shutout by NYU 59-0. Then, BYU struggled against several inferior opponents in UNLV, Colorado State, San Diego State, and in their last game they were trounced by Utah. That Utah game was fairly close going in to the final quarter until Utah had just worn the BYU defensive down to literally no resistance. Arizona is just 2-3 over the past 5 games, but one of those losses was a 17-10 defeat to USC. They then had to play Oregon where they lost by 10 as a 6 point dog and then had to come home to face then Pac-10 leader Oregon State and lost by 2. Point is simple, Arizona is a seasoned team and they have a superior coach in Stoops. The average PR differential between the two teams schedules is a significant 8 points. Tougher opponents make for well prepared and IMPROVED teams come bowl season most of the time. Remember though that we are making these plays based on the AiS grading and that the supplemental cast of systems, angles, and game analysis serve only to reinforce the graded play. Best of luck! Take Arizona.

JOHN RYAN

Ai Simulator 7* graded play on South Florida (CFB) and a 3* amount on the first half line – AiS shows an 80% probability that South Florida will win this game by 14 or more points. SF had a somewhat disappointing 7-5 season and Memphis was 6-6. The big difference in the records is that SF played a significantly tougher schedule than Memphis. That experience will serve them well in a bowl game the program really wants to win impressively for recruiting purposes. AiS shows a 90% probability that SF will gain a minimum of 6 yards per play in this game. Note that SF is 10-0 ATS (+10.0 Units) when they gain 6.5 or more total yards per play since 1992; 11-1 ATS (+9.9 Units) when they outgain their opponents by 2 or more yards/play since 1992; 8-0 ATS (+8.0 Units) when they gain 9 or more net passing yards/attempt over the last 3 seasons. AiS also shows an 88% probability that SF will score 28 or more points in this game. Note that SF is an impressive 25-9 ATS (+15.1 Units) when they score 28 or more points since 1992. Memphis is in a series of poor situational roles for this game noting they are 4-13 ATS (-10.3 Units) after a win by 28 or more points since 1992; 2-15 ATS (-14.5 Units) after scoring 42 points or more last game since 1992. Even the coaches come into this game on opposite polar extremes as shown by these angles. Memphis HC West is 1-10 ATS (-10.0 Units) after scoring 42 points or more last game while SF HC Leavitt is 1-10 ATS (-10.0 Units) after scoring 42 points or more last game. Supporting the 3* graded play on the first half line is a solid system that has gone 26-6 for 81% since 1992. Play against neutral field dogs versus the 1rst half line that are good rushing teams gaining 190 to 230 RY/game and is now facing an average rushing team gaining 140-190 RY/game and in non-conference games. In summary, place a 7* amount on the betting line with SF and a 3* amount on the 1st half line also with SF.

BYU VS. ARIZONA -3
O/U 61.5

Recommendation: Arizona

Sure, the Cougars racked up some lop-sided wins against very poor teams like UCLA and Wyoming, but when forced to play teams ranked in the top 25 they lost both games against TCU and Utah. The Wildcats played the tougher schedule between these teams and were in every game with the biggest loss being by 10 to Oregon. These teams met last season with Arizona breaking out its new spread offense. The Wildcats struggled to score but much has changed since then. Arizona has gone from averaging 16 ppg two years ago to 37 ppg this season. In the past six seasons, the BYU football team has played 12 games against the Pac-10 with a record of 5-7. I believe the difference in this game is going to be with the defenses. The Wildcats have the No. 20 overall defense while the Cougars rank 58th. Considering that four of BYU’s 12 games were against teams ranked 99th or worse, their defensive numbers are somewhat skewed. Often, bowl games come down to what team has more interest. Arizona is going to the postseason for the first time since 1998 while BYU is going to its fourth consecutive Vegas jaunt. The Wildcats, after beating rival Arizona State, graciously accepted their bid. BYU, after getting spanked by rival Utah, was in no such mood to celebrate another trip to Sin City

I am going to be very brief as I write this very late Friday evening and actually very early Saturday morning. Memphis, who has been able to score some points this year, is not going to have the same success against these guys. The Bulls have one of the best D's in the land and have proved that a lot. They gave up just 13 at West Va in their last game, just 13 to UConn prior to that. Rutgers had their way with them on the scoreboard, but that was mostly because of turnovers. They have extreme quickness and they are going to make it very difficult for the Tigers to move the ball effectively. The Tigers last 4 games have been with Tulane, Central Florida, SMU and Southern Miss. That is not the who's who of college football. They have had other success verses lessor schools but they have not faced a school of this caliber yet. The Bulls have scored 20 or fewer points in their last 5 games. They control the clock and they have a ball control offense. This number has risen from an opening of 51. I think not for good reason and I do know that there is a trend of early College Bowls going Over. This one does not.

NFL Football
Cowboys -4.5 over Ravens
Last weeks loss to the Steelers really deflated the Ravens team. This Baltimore defense is always good, but their starters on defense are going down like flys and this unit is not as strong as it could be. On offense Joe Flacco has done a great job this year, but this is where we will see him look like a rookie. Nothing against Flacco, but you have to take your bumps along the way. Dallas beat New York last week which really boosted their confidence. Look for both sides of the ball to play well today. Take the Cowboys at home.

College Football
Navy +3 over Wake Forest
Navy has played great this year. We all know how great they are at running the football, but this team actually has a defense this year. Earlier this season Navy crushed Wake Forest before starting QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada was hurt. Wake made a comeback in that game, but still lost. Riley Skinner threw 4 INT's and they only generated 43 yards on the ground. This game is being played in Washington D.C our nations capital. First year head coach Ken Niumatalolo will want to make a statement to the start of his bowl career. Take Navy.

Fresno -3 over Colorado State
Fresno has underachieved all year and are just 2-10 against the spread. I love these kind of numbers in big games because they usually start to go the other way. Fresno has a great head coach in Pat Hill and on a sad note this will be Defensive Coordinator Dan Brown's last game as he is battling cancer. The Fresno Defense will play their hearts out for him. Colorado State had a good year considering the past, but they had some late season injuries on the offensive line and their defense is horrible. I just do not think this team is ready to win a bowl game yet after just a 6-6 season. Take Fresno.

Memphis/South Florida Over 55
USF had bigger plans this season, but they went on a horrible losing streak and their offense generated nothing. Lucky for South Florida that they will be playing a Memphis team that has no luck against BCS schools and their defense stinks. South Florida should get their offense going today. Memphis has a decent offense with a great running back and two monster receivers. This game means a lot for Memphis and where they will be positioned next season. With a lot of starters back in 2009 a win here could really get them going for a top 25 bid. Look for both teams to come out swinging on offense with the game going OVER the total.

Arizona -3.5 over BYU
Both teams are about evenly matched this year. The real angle into this game has to be the fact that Arizona has not played in a bowl for 10 years and are pumped while BYU has played in this very bowl game four years in a row. Boring. The public is betting heavy on BYU which is the underdog and the line just went from 3 to 3.5 This tells me that the line movement has nothing to do with the money and the linemakers want the bets to keep raining in on BYU. Both teams have good offenses, but edge on defense goes to Arizona. Take the Wildcats.

Game: BYU Cougars @ Arizona Wildcats - Saturday December 20, 2008 8:00 pm
Pick: 2 units TOTAL: Over 62 (-110)

This game looks to be entertaining, as it features two high powered offenses with questionable defenses. BYU’s offense is led by quarterback Max Hall, who has thrown for over 3600 yards and 34 touchdowns. The Cougars have scored 38 points or more in 7 games this season. They are facing an Arizona defense that has been lit up in several games this season. Oregon moved the ball at will against them, scoring 55 points. Even horrible offenses like Washington State and New Mexico had offensive success against them. The Wildcats played their worst defense away from home, as their home/road defensive numbers are vastly different. They are giving up almost 17 more points to opposing offenses outside of Tucson. Meanwhile, BYU’s defense has been even worse to far less competition. Below average offenses were able to torch the Cougars, as Colorado State, UNLV, and TCU scored 109 combined points against them. BYU’s defense also played much worse away from home, giving up 31 points per game. They also allowed opponents to rush for an average of 180 yards per game on the road. Arizona has very talented running backs in Nick Grigsby and Keola Antolin. They will run all over the Cougars, who don’t have the speed or size to stop these backs. This game will be a back and forth shootout with the defenses having problems throughout.

Matchup: Fresno St at Colorado State
Time: 2:30 PM EDT (Sat)

Play: Colorado State (3-110)
I can't remember the last time a team lost by 51 points in their last game of the season and was favored in their bowl game. That's the case here with Fresno State. Fresno State is a mere shell of what people think they should be. Their defense is horrible and their running game has fallen off the map. Head Coach Hill also flirted with leaving and going to coach the University of Washington. Fresno State is going in the wrong direction while Colorado State is on the way back up after hiring head Coach Fairchild. Take Colorado State in this bowl matchup.

Matchup: BYU at Arizona
Time: 8:00 PM EDT (Sat)

Play: Arizona (-3.0-110)
BYU is a team that isn't to exicited to be playing in the same bowl for four straight seasons. The expectations also weren't met for BYU where BYU thought they might end up winning the Mountain West Conference. They are on a low after getting blown out by their rival Utah and finished a distant third in their conference. Arizona lost some close conference games and their running game and defense is much improved and much stronger than BYU. Lay the small spot and take the Arizona Wildcats in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Scott Rickenbach
TITLE: 100% PERFECT **TOP PLAY**
REASON FOR PICK: Scott Rickenbach’s CBB Game#784: 2* (Top Play) Memphis Tigers (-) vs Syracuse @ 6 PM ET – The Orange have big-time problems in their backcourt entering this game. Their two leading scorers aren’t going to be putting up big points today. Yes, Jonny Flynn is expected to play Saturday but he’s not going to be 100%. He injured his hip in the Syracuse win over Canisius on Wednesday early in the second half and did not return. He missed practice yesterday as a result and we expect him to struggle Saturday as he tries to make a go of it against a Memphis backcourt that is loaded with size, athleticism, and talent! Before delving deeper into the Tigers, let’s wrap up on the Orange by noting that Eric Devendorf will miss this game. He’s the 2nd leading scorer for Syracuse and he’s found himself in big trouble due to an off-campus dispute involving a female student at Syracuse. A weaker Orange backcourt is a big problem against Memphis as they will have to turn to youth and, also, much less talented personnel to fill in the holes.

The Tigers are coming off of an ugly eight point win over Arkansas Little Rock on Wednesday. However, how could Memphis possibly be up for that game after suffering a disappointing nine-point loss at Georgetown on Saturday? The fact is that there was no way Memphis was going to enter the game against the Trojans with the right mind-set and that is precisely why they let an 18 point second half lead get away from them in that game. However, there is no shortage of emotions for this one! On national TV on Saturday, the Tigers get a chance to knock off a higher-ranked opponent and, in doing so, erase the disappointment of last Saturday’s defeat. Note that, prior to the 8 point win over UALR, all the Tigers wins had come by at least twelve points this season! The big guards of Memphis are going to give Syracuse a lot of trouble on the perimeter and, also, Shawn Taggart and Robert Dozier give the Tigers a veteran tandem capable of dominating the frontcourt. The Syracuse Orange enter this game short-handed and that’s simply not going to cut it in a tough road setting and we’ll take advantage in a game that should be an absolute road blowout! Play Memphis minus the points as a Top Play selection.

Baltimore vs Dallas OVER 39.5

Yes, both teams have stingy defenses but both are also scoring big.

In the last 4 games each team has averaged 25 points per game, with each team scoring over 30 points twice in that time span.
