MMA figurehead Monte Cox has confirmed that his client, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, will face former Olympic boxing gold medalist Ray Mercer in a boxing match that will headline Adrenaline MMA’s third showing on May 30 at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The fight will be Sylvia’s first-ever professional boxing match. -mmaontap

Looks like the fight is off:

A boxing “superfight” of sorts between former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and former WBO heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer has been struck from Adrenaline III on May 30 at the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.

Adrenaline promoter Monte Cox alerted MMAWeekly.com of the change late Monday evening.

The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board has refused to sanction the headlining bout, according to Commissioner Nick Lembo, though he declined to comment on the decision.

Adrenaline III will go on as an all-MMA card, and several replacements for the main event are under consideration, including Jeremy Horn.

Adrenaline promoter Monte Cox is currently searching for another venue to host the Sylvia/Mercer tilt, and indicated June as a possibility for the rescheduled event.

The bout with Mercer is to serve as Sylvia’s professional boxing debut, having served an eight-year career in mixed martial arts that lead him to the pinnacle of the sport, twice serving as UFC heavyweight champion.

Forty-seven-year-old Mercer is 36-7-1 as a professional boxer, a gold medal winner in the 1988 Olympics and a former WBO heavyweight champion. Mercer dipped his toes into MMA waters in 2007 with an exhibition bout against Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, losing by submission early in the first round. His last fight was a boxing match last September in Sweden, where he won a decision over Richel Hersisia.

The fight was originally under consideration as an MMA bout, but in earlier comments to MMAWeekly.com, Cox decided a boxing match would be more competitive.

Looks like its on again

the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board refused to sanction has apparently found a new home.

Speaking with Sherdog.com, promoter Monte Cox announced the six-round heavyweight fight would be rescheduled for June 13 in Alabama as the main event of Adrenaline III. The hybrid boxing-mixed martial arts event will be held at the 17,000-seat BJCC arena in Birmingham.

Cox confirmed that Alabama does not have a regulatory body to oversee the fight.

Sylvia, 33, a former UFC heavyweight champion, will be making his professional boxing debut against the 1988 Olympic gold medalist.

Mercer, who piled up a 36-7-1 record over his 20-year boxing career, is a former WBO heavyweight champion who has also fought in K-1 as well as dabbling in MMA. The 47-year-old dropped his only MMA match, a bout sanctioned as an exhibition in New Jersey, to Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson.

Looks like its back to an MMA fight now.

Tim Sylvia and Ray Mercer will now meet in a heavyweight mixed martial arts bout at Adrenaline III this Saturday at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham, Ala.

The matchup of former UFC champion and former boxing champion will headline 14 additional MMA bouts in the cage. The event will no longer be regulated.

Originally scheduled as a six-round boxing bout, Adrenaline owner and promoter Monte Cox said he made the decision to re-categorize the match on Thursday.

“I got a call from the Pennsylvania commissioner saying that the boxing match is illegal because we weren’t getting regulated by a U.S. commission,” said Cox on Thursday.

With no regulatory body present in Alabama, the Canadian-based River Cree Combative Sports Commission had agreed to step in and oversee the event.

Cox said he believed he had completed all the necessary requirements asked of him, which included procuring a letter from Alabama’s governor welcoming the Canadian commission into the jurisdiction.

However, Association of Boxing Commissions President Tim Lueckenhoff told Sherdog.com that neither he nor the ABC organization had been approached directly to regulate the bout. Further, Lueckenhoff said he’d thought Sylvia-Mercer would be an MMA contest and not a boxing bout. Lueckenhoff said federal law currently has no jurisdiction over MMA bouts, but laws are in place over boxing under the Professional Boxing Safety Act.

In a press release issued by the ABC on Thursday, the organization denounced the “unwarranted and illegal” boxing match. The release also noted that the River Cree commission, as well as referee John McCarthy, had withdrawn their involvement from the bout and event.

“Canadian boxing commissions are not authorized to supervise boxing matches in the U.S.; and, patently, it is wholly inappropriate for one representative from a Canadian boxing commission, together with an MMA referee, to supervise a boxing match,” said Bruce C. Spizler, chairman of the ABC legal committee in the release.

“I told the promoter I would do it if it was a sanctioned event,” McCarthy told Sherdog.com Thursday. “As soon as it became apparent that that would not happen, I pulled out.”

In March, it had been reported that the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) said it would not regulate the bout, prompting Cox to move the bout to another venue.

“Everyone thinks I came to Alabama because it’s unsanctioned here,” said Cox, “but why would I go to so much trouble to try and get this event regulated if that were the case?”

Cox also said the Mashantucket Pequot Athletic Commission, which oversees events at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, had agreed to regulate the event in March, but a financial agreement could not be reached with the casino.

The event was moved to Alabama for sponsorship opportunities, Cox said. Cox said he would not be able to procure new regulation for the event in time.

Sylvia (24-5) has not competed since he succumbed to a rear-naked choke from former Pride Fighting Championships titleholder Fedor Emelianenko in just 36 seconds at Affliction “Banned” 11 months ago. The 33-year-old has dropped back-to-back bouts for the first time in his career but holds victories against former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski (twice) and Ricco Rodriguez, among others. His only professional defeats have come to Emelianenko, Arlovski, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Randy Couture and Frank Mir, all of whom are ranked in the top 10.

The 48-year-old Mercer (0-0), a former heavyweight boxing champion, has made only one appearance in mixed martial arts, as he submitted to Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson in an exhibition match regulated by the NJSACB back in 2007. Mercer compiled a 36-7-1 mark in professional boxing and won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

It's actually amazing what a huge part of my life this place has become. That probably kind of sounds weird, but it's true. Not only goes it give me a reliable outlet to talk about MMA and betting, but it's also a core part of my social existence. ^ Thanks poopoo. Good times. I even tried telling ou guys that I wasn't going tio win like this all the time, I said it over and over... but no one believed me until I started losing. Variance is a reality. I remember when you had a blog too. Speaking of, I need to check in on general CHAOS' blog... we all started at the same time.

I originally came here just for some additional opinions, I thinkit was just zY, Luke, Zak and SPX. I had the blog out of necessity, because there was nowhere good to go to get feedback and other ideas (without weeding though mountains of idiocy on SD). But once I started posting here, it was what I was looking for in the first place, you just have to get past all the bullshitting... so I just decided to join in the bullshitting, that makes it easier.

SPX you probably really did create the momentum... you are the most consistent poster on here. No one like a forum that has no responses. Zak, you should give him a raise.

I came here via Scientist blog. Props to Zak for running this place. Get some ads and make some money. ---We are probably the best group on forums that I know of. SBRforum is pretty good i guess, so is zewkey but this place gets me what I need. Solid Forum, it is def the momentum for me being in the green.

We are absolutely the best. Even if others can rival us for betting knowledge/thoughts/ideas, they can't touch the sense of community.

Like I've said before, I really don't want this place to get much bigger because I think it would actually kill part of the small-town feel.

I agree. Unless we can attract someone devoted and knowledgeable then there is no point. I don't want a 100 morons posting here, it would just get in our way.

Zak will never sell out. I think he said somewhere that the value of IWS was 5-10K... one day he will just sell it and we will all have to move to a new forum.

I like IWS because the group is more willing to help each other out and someone is always posting, even if it has nothing to do with mma or betting. You can make a post on Zewkey and it will sit there for several days, maybe no one will ever respond, especially if it is of no benefit to them. Here, we have a nice give and take. I will say that it definitely is not for everyone. But that is ok, I don't want 200 people posting either...

Also, congrats Zak... IWS finally comes up in the google and bing search boxes autocomplete. If you start typing invest w... it comes up as a choice. Honestly, even if there were ads, it's not like any of us would ever been clicking on the shit, so they would be the most unprofitable ads in the history of cyberspace.

MMA_scientist
04-20-2011, 09:57 PM
I would click the shit out of them.

SPX
04-20-2011, 09:58 PM
Hmm. Maybe there's something to that.

Perhaps Zak could hire us to take an hour out of our day to just click ads on the site and then at the end of the month we all split the profits.

MMA_scientist
04-20-2011, 10:03 PM
That would be my plan. But i think the reality is that if the click rate doesn't match up with reality, they will say you violated the terms of the agreement and they won't pay you. When you sign up, they specifically tell you that you cannot tell your readers to click the ads.

Hey MMAscientist how do companies get away with using words like Unlimited and ANY in their ads when neither are true .

Examples Pizza hut any pizza any toppings 10 bucks. I ordered 2 large pizzas with like 4 topping each ,went to get them and it was 26 dollars . They said it was only up to 3 topping and didnt include stuffed crust pizza. How the heck is that any and any? Needless to say I told them to shove the pizzas up their ass and we went to mexican

Another example unlimited data plans on your phone . In the fine print is says cap of 5GB a month. How is 5gb unlimited?

I'm just wondering how its legal to advertise like this

SPX
04-20-2011, 10:30 PM
I ran into the data plan thing when I wanted to tether my phone.

Then I read the contract and it says "unlimited data does not mean unreasonable use." It's all bullshit.

Well the word unlimited means infinite ,endless, no amount etc ....it doesnt mean except for unreasonable use or tethering .

I just want to know how they are allowed to advertise like that.

Most of the stuff that I get offered to me, is from sportsbooks though. They want me to basically plaster the site with ads, and shove their book down your throat.

Make some of the forums, like the MMA forum, sponsored by bookmaker.com. basically shit like that.

When you sign up through clicking the ads on here, and deposit, I get a cut of all your losses. I got offered Like 25% from bookmaker a couple different times. Its called an affiliate program or some shit like that.

I actually like bookmaker, they have always been good to me the times I have used them, but they just get too pushy and I don't like anyone coming into my house and telling me what to do so to speak.

That seems like a good deal. If it were 5dimes you'd get rich off of me, I lose all my bets on 5dimes and win all my bets on Bookmaker.

Seriously though, were they talking abouy 25% of every lost wager? So even if you come out ahead for the event or week or month, you would still get 25%? If so, you would bank a lot of money like that. And b) I guess people are losing a shitload of money gambling if the books can afford to give away 25%

Yup, its 25% for every lost bet.

Affiliate revenue share deals start at 25% commission of player's net losses in betting and casino, and 25% of the rake in our poker room.

To me, It just kinda seems hippacritical to ram my affiliate account down your throat, and then root for you to lose.

Winning posters = Happy posters = more posting = Zak's day going faster at work.

Can't put a price on that.

we're all adults here... we all know that we are not going to win every bet. In fact, I will often take a hedge against a parlay and I hope I lose it. We all already have accounts though... so I don't know how many new accounts you would get. Probably a few a year at least though.

25% seems like a massive sum when you really think about it. I mean, that shit would add up QUICK, especially if you have a high-volume bettor.

It would be weird though to have to root for people to lose and then get pissed if they win. Seems like there's a definite conflict of interest there that could make life complicated.

1) Refer self (or cleverly concealed alter-ego) to BookMaker.

2) Place massive arb-bets on every single line offered.

3) Profit.

Example

you deposit 500

you lose the whole 500

site affiliate gets 125 dollars
